For example, I want to have my phone exactly the way it is now after I root my phone. From data, text messages, icons placed on the launcher and so on. So after rooting, my data will be gone, then I want to flash the data back from a backup. I understand that I have to wipe data, so I was wondering if this possible. It's been a while since I've been in the rooting scene so bear with me. Thank you.

I've had my Desire for a couple of months now and I love it. I'm still running stock eclair on there (T-Mobile UK), but I'm going away in a week and will want to use my iPod touch to get on some apps I have, so I was looking into wireless tethering.
Now, I've rooted a G2 and loaded custom firmware before, so I have a vague idea what I'm doing and I'm sure the tuts on here will help me out, but reading over them, there doesn't seem to be a way to root my phone without losing data.
Basicially, I want to root it at the least but keep ALL of my data on there. Once it's rooted, I'll have no problems loading custom ROMs on there as I can do a NAND backup of my current data, play with custom ROMs then restore the backup, right?
So my questions summed up:
Can I root without losing my current data? This includes everything, I want my phone as is after the root.
Will a NAND backup take an image of the current phone data's state?
Can I restore the NAND backup image and carry on using the phone as if nothing ever happened?
Rooting will cause your phone to lose data, you need a program called MyBackup Pro (you can use the trial to backup/ restore) until you have rooted and can install titanium backup / rom manager.
yeah the recovery mode nand backup will backup everything so you can restore your phone system back to normal.
the HTC sense backup feature will backup a handful of data settings on your phone, even if you do lose everything and still have your sd you can reflash back to stock and it will restore them 'handful' of settings it saved. Of the top of my head i think it didnt backup screen settings (Display settings) and application data. I do recall the stock htc sense backing up sms, contacts, wifi etc.
When updating or switching Roms entirely, I go through the typical steps through CWM: Back up, Wipe Date, Wipe Dalvik, Install zip, Restore .data . I was wondering if restoring the data interferes with anything, such as new features/updates from the new Rom. Am I just recycling the properties of the properties of the first Rom by restoring the data?
Most of the time it's oh to restore data unless the room developer explicitly says bout to.. never restore system apps data and never restore data when moving between different versions of android or if switching between tw and cm roms (even though, with the latter you can get away with it sometimes, it can cause problems and I never recommend doing it...) that being said, I never restore any data at all. I back up apps only and never restore their data to minimize problems... (I don't play games and the such on my phone)
When I switch rooms I do a full wipe. Never back up anything. I can 're-download my apps from market. I have nothing important on phone that requires me to back up. Less problems this way.

Backing up just apps without data will cause no problems ever... this only applies to user apps, not system apps
Okay so I managed to update my phone to MM without loosing any data (phone unlock, Whatsapp everything is present as it was).
So now the only question remains that, if I do a backup of everything in Smart Switch and then do a factory reset of my Note 4 then restore the backup, will I have everything as it is present? All my Whatsapp chats and everything working after factory reset?
Waiting for a good sincere reply.
Regards,
Zeekay.
Anyone?
From what I've personally experienced with Smart Switch it doesn't backup the app data for most apps only the app itself, with some exceptions for samsung apps like S Memo.
As Whatsapp isn't a seperate item on the backup list, I would have to say that it won't backup its data.
Hello, i would like to root my HTC 10 and also maybe get some custom ROM. I watched many guides on the internet but every method is different a bit. So i would like to ask here because im bit lost in these guids.
1. Can i root without loosing all my data? If not, what should i use as my backup app or method?
2. Can i somehow backup my apps, so they will install automatically after the root? I mean without 50x clicking on "yes i accept" or something like that.
3. Which roms would u recommend to me and why?
4. What is the best way to root it right now? (all these guids are from year 2016 so it can be outdated i guess)
5. Thanks alot.

1 & 2. If you want to root your phone for free you'll need to unlock your bootloader first, which will wipe your phone anyway. Your apps should automatically be restored from your google account afterwards, if you have automatic backups enabled. You should still backup all of your pictures/music/files manually to your sd card or computer. Also I like to backup my texts and call log using Call Log Backup and Restore. Same for whatsapp, or any other folder you want to restore afterwards.
3. I use stock. Leedroid and Viper are probably the most popular ones. Close enough to stock with many customization options.
4. Best way to root is through Magisk. Doesn't modify your system and you can hide root for apps that don't allow it. If you go straight to a custom rom after unlocking your bootloader, you won't need to root separately.
5. You're welcome.

Settings, Backup and Reset.
Not sure if enabling it will immediately back everything up.
After your phone is wiped, it asks you for your Google account and then which apps you want to restore. Not sure if app data is backed up/restored as well.

Hi
I have a RN8P Global 12.5.1
How can i unlock the bootloader whithout loosing data, exactly App's Data. And rooting it
It's important for me to save it, but whithout Root, Titanium don't work.
Or is there any other solution to backup App's Data with another software or a Windows software.
Thanks in advance for your help
unlocking bootloader while retaining data is not possible, sadly.. but most of your data will be saved and restored with Google account. you can also use MIUI backup if you're still gonna use MIUI after unlocking

Hi
Thanks for your answer, is there any solution to backup App's Data ?
With MIUI backup, no App's Data are saved, also with Google.
Or transfer data to another device ?
Thanks in advance

hmm based on experience after unlocking bootloader, and even flashing new ROM, most of my apps data got restored by Google like app settings and preferences, messages, home settings, etc.
which specific app do you need to restore data on? perhaps it has a way to backup and restore data, like in most messaging apps. if it's a game, you can connect it to Google Play Games too
just treat it like you're transferring to a new device/phone, and you'll be okay and won't miss much

Hi
Thanks for your reply
It's not game's data, but apps like CCTV apps with special data.
I tried to transfer it in a new Samsung Tab, but only the apps are restored, not the apps data.
Titanium do it verry well but with the root
