Before I root... - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my Desire for a couple of months now and I love it. I'm still running stock eclair on there (T-Mobile UK), but I'm going away in a week and will want to use my iPod touch to get on some apps I have, so I was looking into wireless tethering.
Now, I've rooted a G2 and loaded custom firmware before, so I have a vague idea what I'm doing and I'm sure the tuts on here will help me out, but reading over them, there doesn't seem to be a way to root my phone without losing data.
Basicially, I want to root it at the least but keep ALL of my data on there. Once it's rooted, I'll have no problems loading custom ROMs on there as I can do a NAND backup of my current data, play with custom ROMs then restore the backup, right?
So my questions summed up:
Can I root without losing my current data? This includes everything, I want my phone as is after the root.
Will a NAND backup take an image of the current phone data's state?
Can I restore the NAND backup image and carry on using the phone as if nothing ever happened?

Rooting will cause your phone to lose data, you need a program called MyBackup Pro (you can use the trial to backup/ restore) until you have rooted and can install titanium backup / rom manager.
yeah the recovery mode nand backup will backup everything so you can restore your phone system back to normal.
the HTC sense backup feature will backup a handful of data settings on your phone, even if you do lose everything and still have your sd you can reflash back to stock and it will restore them 'handful' of settings it saved. Of the top of my head i think it didnt backup screen settings (Display settings) and application data. I do recall the stock htc sense backing up sms, contacts, wifi etc.

Any way to back up all of my apps before rooting for the first time??

Hey guys,
I have already rooted my friends phone with the 1.47.651.1 ota update and everything went fine.
My only problem is I have a lot of apps I don't want to loose, paid ones as well. Is there anyway to back these all up?
Obviously I have no problem getting the free ones back but if I had to delete the paid one is it possible to get it back without paying again?
Don't quote me on this, but i believe i have read in a few places around the forums that say you can redownload paid apps without paying again.
Did you just get the phone / have to run any of the OTA updates? It might be possible that the original unrevoked method can let you use Titanium Backup to backup all your apps, then you can run a root + nand unlocker & just restore your apps.
correct, paid apps are tied to your gmail account, so as long as you use that gmail account then you can re download any app you paid for.
I agree with Veritas - Titanium Backup will be your best friend if you plan to root, flash ROMs and so forth.
I've been using Titanium Backup since I got my EVO and I love it. Very easy to backup all user apps/data to the SD card. Once a new ROM is flashed, install Titanium Backup (your license key is located on your SD card, so as long as you dont format that, you should be fine. You can copy that file to your PC as well for a backup). Once the new ROM is up and running, simply do a Titanium restore of all user apps/data. If it werent for Titanium Backup, I would not be flashing custom ROMs as often as I do.
This takes a while but you can backup apps with most of the file managers on the market without root access. All it backs up is the apk though. Just use it for the free ones. After you root then titanium backup is your best friend

[Q] Best backup options for 1.72OTA?

I have a UK Desire Z, which I love!!! I have been reading up on rooting, and after researching a lot, I have got ADB up and running and am now comfortable using it. The next step is to permanent root/s-off so that i can install gingervillain.
The questions I have is this. I have the 1.72 ota update, so Im going to have to downgrade to do all of the above, and with this will be wiping my phone. but I have a lot of apps and things on my phone. Contacts im not so worried about as it syncs with my gmail, and I will backup the sd card on my pc. But for all the apps and other settings, what is the best backup solution. i know of titanium backup, but with that can I back it up on 1.72 ota and restore it into gingervillain? I know once ive fully rooted it and installed clockwork mod recovery I can do a full backup of the phone, but is there an efficient way to migrate everything from my 1.72 to a new rom? I know I will be getting temproot first in 1.72, so can use things like titanium backup before the wipe.
Thanks
Titanium Backup works really well. Been using it for several months now. I bought the pro version for batch restore of apps.
You will be able to use it just fine to back up all your apps then restore them all together into any other ROM you flash. They all stay in the Titanium Backup folder on your SDcard. The nice thing about it is that it saves all the app data as well (assuming you choose to back that up), which allows your apps to be restored to the exact point at which they were on the original ROM (aka game save states, passwords, preferences, etc.)

[Q] Preferred Method to Backup/Restore Messages & Settings

I'm currently running stock sense and looking at going to CM7. I'm concerned about my application settings and sms/mms messages - I'd like to keep those if at all possible. What is the preferred method to backup on sense and restore to a non sense rom?
I used unrevoked. It also gives you clokworkmod which will let you make full back ups. Check out the unrevoked site for details. Titanium Back up is the defacto back up utility for apps and data.
I've already run unrevoked forever and am rooted. Will titanium backup allow me to restore my sms/mms messages from the stock HTC application into the app that comes with CM7 or handcent?
Yes, it will back up everything you choose, Some say mybackup pro is better, just a personal preference.
Oh yeah, you should do a full back up and place it on your Sd card and place a copy on your pc somewhere (better safe than sorry!). That way you can always restore to that if things go bad. This has saved me a few times.

[Q] merge app data from nand backup

I made a backup of my nand right before trying the hotspot framework mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2057344. well once it did not work for me I did the proper wipes and tried to restore my nand backup with CWM. it would restore everything except my data (it would say "error restoring /data!"). i was able to find where i would believe my data lives for certain apps (i really dont wanna do some of the games all over again). once i thought i found where they live on the back up and on the root of the rom, i replaced them but now it doesn't work, and FC's every time. I do have an older back up of it with TiBu, but it is waaaaaaaaaaaay father back then where i was...is there a way to merge the data so i can get my places back on my apps?
well i was able to my old data over and replace it in the /data/data folder.....just took a whole bunch of tries

[Q] Can't run Nandroid backup

Ok forgive me, I'm fairly new to all of this...
So I have the SGH-i317m (Telus version) of the Note II. I rooted it many months ago and everything went great. The other day I decided that I wanted to flash the Jelly Beans rom for it. So I ran a Nanadroid backup of the original rom, then used Titanium Backup to backup my apps. Everything went fine with that. So then I rebooted in recovery and did a data wipe/factory reset and also wiped the partition cache, then flashed the rom. Again everything went smoothly.
Here's where my "newb" side comes to play. After I restored my apps, everything backed up fine other than some of my contacts, text message logs, and call logs. I assume this is because I used the wrong backup setting in Titanium Backup? I think I should have used "Backup all user apps + system data", but instead I used "Backup all user apps" (can anyone verify this?)
So anyways, I went to restore the backup so I could retrieve all of this info. Again I wiped data/factory reset and wiped the cache before running the backup (which was a zip on the external sd card). Almost immediately I received a message saying "error while restoring /system!"
So I did some reading and found a thread saying that it didn't work because the nandroid backup can only backup the original rom. So I reflashed the stock firmware (again doing the full wipe), and that didn't work either giving me a message saying "can't open "file name" (bad). Installation aborted".
Can you guys give me a hand? When I try flashing the Jelly Beans rom (also I've flashed the Clean rom as well), they both work fine. I just get troubles trying to run my backup or installing the stock firmware.
Sorry for the length, I just wanted to make sure I provided as many of the details as I could. Thanks!
First yous should Never backup/restore system apps/data. It is a sure way to cause FC.
Second if you want to backup SMS/MMS hit menu on Titanium Backup and scroll down to Backup data to xml. If you don't care about MMS download SMS Backup & Restore from the market (free) as the backup/restore process will be a lot quicker.
What recovery are you using? There apps that let you explore the Backups and retrieve some information. In fact even Titanium Backup PRO restores certain items from nandroids so it's worth checking out.

I was having an issue restoring the system partition. Data was failing, but running system alone I saw it said:
Can't read: misc/audit/audit/audit/audit/audit/audit/audit...
That went on forever.
It never skipped it, was just stuck trying to read the folder it was in.
Any ideas what could cause this?
I went back to stock so it's not pressing, but I don't want to do it again
Killed one of my backups.
I'm using TWRP 2.6.1.0
Backup had been successful. Restoring it would seem ok until phone reset/shut off. Then would hang on boot.
I got curious and tried restoring partitions individually to see what would happen.
Data always failed and system did that infinite directory thing.
If anyone's got any ideas what I should avoid doing so I don't mess up another backup, I'd appreciate it
The data partition is usually your photos, music, and movies. You should move all that stuff to your external sd card before you make a nandroid. Some versions of custom recoveries have a limit on the size of the backup, so if you have a lot of media in there, it will cause a nandroid to fail.
Jibust I just used the recovery that is already on the phone by pressing volume up/power/home at the same time. You said that there are apps that will retrieve information from my backups? Is this my only option? There is no way to run my backup now? It seems strange that I can't run it in the first place. It seems like it should be a fairly straight forward process. If there is no way to run my full backup, can you give me more details on how to use these apps to pull info from the backups?
Thank you

Take a look at the apps in this search, https://play.google.com/store/search?q=nandroid I have used the Nandroid Manager app, I haven't tried the other ones. Just make sure to read the description as not all of the apps will be able to explore/restore from all types of backups. Warning: I have never tried this, only seen people use it, some of the apps have xda threads so I suggest you take a look.
Also, as mentioned Titanium Backup Pro (at least I use the Pro version) has a feature to restore selected data from the nandroid backup. I have tried it and it works, so maybe you only need to use TB and don't have to purchase another app.
Edit: tried to restore apps from a nandroid using TB and had a FC, so you might want to try one of the other apps.
Nandroid Manager
I have used Nandroid Manager to recover individual apps + data - worth a try. Although people report mixed results.
