[Q] Unroot a custom rom?

Hey All,
For Work I need to install the app Good for Enterprise so I can get my calendar and work email pushed to my phone. Unfortunately it is company policy that it be unrooted. Presumeably a security issue. Is it possible to unroot a custom rom? i'd rather not go back to stock for the simple reason of app storage. I love A2SD+ and being able to have as many apps as I want installed. Also nandroid backups, that would go away without root too wouldn;t it? Can I just remove the SU.apk? Will that suffice to be "unrooted"? Is that even possible?

If you want to unroot, you'll need to go back to stock.
The reason they want unrooted phones, is not so much a security issue, as it is they just don't understand or don't wish to deal with possible problems.

If you backup your apps and data you can run the official RUU, and it will put the original unrooted system to your phone. I don't know other method.

Removing the SU binaries will unroot you, I don't see the need as to why you have to be unrooted though.

apparently you can't use the new movie-rental feature of google's market, when you are rooted.
Is it possible to stick to a custom rom but unroot it, so that google recognises your phone as a not-rooted device and allows you to watch movies from market?
I don't need root-permissions every day - in fact I only need it for Titanium Backup, so deleting su-binaries and/or superuser.apk would be ok - but it must be possible to restore them (via recovery/adb) to run TB.
This probably isn't what google wants you to do since you can download the movie to watch later and if you have a working recovery you probably could get you hands on the downloaded files, but still - would be nice, if this was possible.

Easiest way to unroot and go back to stock is to stick a PB99IMG.zip on your sdcard, and turn your phone on with volume held down

How about this:
1) Go back to stock ROM via RUU
2) Install Good For Enterprise (I guess your IT department installs this, so they can check you are not rooted?)
3) ROOT the stock ROM using UnRevoked
4) Take a Titanium Backup of Good For Enterprise
5) Re-install your custom ROM
6) Restore the Titanium Backup of GfE
-> You have a rooted, custom ROM with GfE installed. And your company will never know!

Has anyone ever tested this?

Or why don't you just delete superuser via adb or android commander

good for enterprise checks for root access/ su every time it starts. It's not an issue of not being able to install the app. It's available for free on the market. The problem is when entering all your info and starting it up, it checks for SU.
I am guessing the best way around this is to install custom rom, set everything up that you need that requires SU/root. Then delete all the su/root related files. Then install Good.
Unfortunately I don't have a list of all the files that have to be deleted for this to work.
There have been reports that other users who have tried this method got it to work but the App stopped syncing after a few days.

I tried this method, renamed the 2 files. It has been working for last 24 hours. I'll update again after a week if it still works..

You renamed SU.apk to SU.apk.bak most likely...
What did you rename the libs file to?

I have rooted my HTC Salsa to get apps2sd which is great, but now my mobile banking app says it will not work on a rooted device, similar to your issue.
I am new to android modding, what commands do i need to enter where to rename the files you mention ?

wont work good enterprises would more than likely check every time like sky go. you would have to removed a2sd command line i think and all su binarys ( and su.akp ( difficult as its normally a system app and once one of the su has been removed you dont have premition to remove the other/
and to the donunt who said ( the dont understand root) wanna cookie 0. basicly good enterprise is a secure web client for companys to send information to mobiles, i have it on my work (iphone) <<<< scummmy.. anyways as root gives to the option to do what ever you or anyone else wants with the phone in theory you could use that system to breack the law or for instance chaindd could possible put an update in to su that will take data from the company> for google videos ) well with root you can screen record ( basicly ) excuse the spelling im trying to find out how to un root and keep all of my system ui mods and themes and my rom ( proving difficult)

Hi guys,
OK, so I'm not really a newbie as I loaded Android onto my HD2, both SD and NAND versions (RIP HD2 ).
But, it has been a while and I have a couple of questions I've been trying to find answers to:
I got my nexus though vodafone UK, if this makes a difference.
Can I root this phone without wiping the device? I'm currently quite happy with the stock rom , but I'd like to push some custom boot animations, etc.
I've been looking into backing up apps that I've downloaded as I don't currently have wifi access - I do get unlimited data for a few months, but it'll take ages to download it all again!
Titanium Backup was my first port of call, but says it requires root...
And lastly, if I were to use Titanium to back up, say, a game, would my progress in that game be saved?

Rooting your phone doesnt wipe your device, however in order to root your phone you will need to unlock the bootloader which is a very simple process but this process DOES wipe your device. It only needs to be performed once though but without doing it you wont be able to do anything else.
Use the Sticky Thread to find out how to install fastboot drivers which you will need to unlock the bootloader. Then you can use pauls r3 Superboot to root the phone.
I've been looking into backing up apps that I've downloaded as I don't currently have wifi access - I do get unlimited data for a few months, but it'll take ages to download it all again!

Any app that will backup your apps/settings will require root. You can also flash ClockworkMod and make a NAND backup of your device, then restore the DATA partition on a new Rom to restore your apps.
And lastly, if I were to use Titanium to back up, say, a game, would my progress in that game be saved?

Im pretty sure it saves app data so that would include saved games or settings.

I'm kinda new at this. I know about being able to use backups with TWRP and I know about MW Apps Manager but that's about it. Please make suggestions of how I can improve the experience of using the Note 4.

I'm going to assume that you have already installed the TWRP custom recovery. You probably already know that you have to do that before you can obtain root. Aside from being able to flash custom ROMs, none available right now, there are a number of apps that you can install that do a number of things that you cannot do without root. I'll list a few that I use and what they do but the list is not all encompassing:
--Titanium Backup (root)--a great tool for freezing unwanted apps, backing up apps/data etc
--Greenify--enables you to set user installed apps to "hibernate" a few minutes after you have finished using them. Significantly improves battery life.
--LagFix--an app, when run, that can eliminate "lag" when/if it occurs on the phone most of the time.
--SD Maid--a great file manager app that enables you to control which apps start at power on, enables the user to really clean out cache, duplicate files, orphaned files and compact databases. Saves memory resources and keeps your phone running smooth and clean.
--adaway--as the name implies, keeps those pesky little ads from showing up in apps.
--exposed--a favorite of many users. Enables you to customize a number of settings, notifications etc.
That's the apps I use that can only be run with root. I'm sure some other users will chime in here an provide some other things that root offers.

You can run anything you want, it's not going to hurt root. Root is really only a door, or access, to settings/system files that you wouldn't normally have. Any app that you can run without root can be run safely with root. The opposite is not true. There are a number of apps that cannot be run without root. A good way to find most of the apps that require root is to go to the Play Store and just search for "root apps". There's a bunch out there that you may want to try.

The only thing you have to be aware of to protect root is taking an OTA update. Now that you have a custom recovery and root the likely hood that you would be able to find and download an OTA is not likely, but if by chance you receive a notice that an OTA is available do not download and install it. If by chance the phone automatically downloads it and tries to install it, the OTA should fail so you'll be alright.
Be careful not to flash or ODIN a retail firmware. That is probably the biggest warning I can offer. Retail firmware, when flashed, will lock your bootloader. You can flash a modem or a kernel or a recovery, but not the entire firmware .tar md5 file.

By the way. Since you are new to root and custom recoveries, the first thing you should do, right now, is do a backup. Power off your phone, go into TWRP recovery (hold down the volume up, home and power buttom all at the same time). Continue to hold them down until you see the TWRP splash screen, then you can let them go. From the on screen menu select backup. Choose which file you want backed up. I recommend you do boot, system, data, modem, EFS and recovery as a minimum. After the backup is complete return to the main menu and select reboot. Do it right now

I'm not sure, I don't use it. But, if I remember correctly I think you go into settings>more networks>and turn on mobile hotspot. But again, I don't use it so I'm not sure. Have you done your backup yet? It is the only safety net you will have until a developer releases a ROM we can flash. Don't look for Samsung to release any firmware for the Developer Edition...it ain't going to happen. Your backup and TWRP are the ONLY safety net you have right now. I can't emphasize that enough.

Thanks ,Yes I did the backups last night before and after root default and complete. I even tested Restoring a backup before I rooted. I hope I got it

Outstanding. Didn't want to "harp" on the backup thing, but I've seen so many users root, TWRP and then do something to brick their phone and they didn't have a backup. They were screwed.

We should probably do a backup on a schedule. Someone could make an app that does a back up automatically on a schedule. I'm going to put Back Up Note 4 on my calender then back it up

It's diffidently a good idea to have a recent backup and the original backup of your stock ROM. The only problem with a lot of backups is keeping straight what backup is what and the amount of space they consume. Memory is cheap I know, but backups can eat up storage real fast, LOL.

Yes. Agree with space but every backup I do, I also have my TWRP folder sync'd to my Dropbox account. So what ever changes are made go their. I also save them on the laptop as well as a thumb drive. Been burned once on my note 3. Now, is there the stock md5 file for the developers edition like on the note 3's?

No there is not a stock md5 for the DE and there most likely will not be. In the past Samsung has never released a firmware package for their DE phones, not that I have ever seen anyway. What your phone came with is what you got. NO OTAs and no updates of any kind in the future...that's if Samsung behaves like they have in the past. That's why making a good back up of your stock (no root) when you first get recovery is so important. And, making a backup after root of course.

Do you mind me asking how you sync..............

your TWRP folder to your Dropbox account.. Did you transfer the folder to your computer first or can you sync the folder on your phone to DropBox directly ?

I use dropsync select the folder and it just does it automatically.

I'm assuming that the Greenify is the one with the leaf?
Is LagFix the purchase version? Is it an app by itself, or does it require exposed?
Do you use the SD Maid Pro Version?
Does the Adaway require exposed as well?

Titanium Backup hang

Hi,
have a question and hope you can help me.
Became my M9 today from o2 Germany, unlock bootloader over HTC, install TWRP for M9 and root with SuperSU.zip ... Device is root, Titanium Backup work, key is installed, but when I start the batch to restore all user apps with data, it hangs at 0% :crying:

What?! How do you unlock your Hboot via HTCDev? M9 still isnt supportet to unlock by HTC..

something like this I knew from my good old I9300. Might be a supersu thing. Although I read somewhere, twrp for the M9 seems not to write to system partition.
As I got my M9 yesterday, I'm still staying away from debranding and unlocking stuff atm.

Rooted. There are limitations. \system is not writeable, as was initially on the M8 until insecure kernels were released here. Titanium Backup can't write to removable sdcard yet. I still have a hornet's nest of diagnostic software running and I have to give it a wide berth because logging is required on test devices.
Wonder if anyone there will notice what I've done after the overnight logs......

TWRP can mount the system partition; I got myself into plenty of trouble yesterday as a result and had to do a factory reset. The good news, however, was that doing so wiped internal memory and its infernal encryption. (I had encrypted the internal sdcard at the request of HTC during the testing process). Apparently, you can encrypt and unencrypt the removable media willy nilly (although you'll get a layered effect where files stored during encryption can't be read unless the card is encrypted or re-encrypted), but you cannot unencrypt the internal sdcard without a factory reset. I have politely suggested that they make that fact abundantly clear in the user i/o for encryption, 'cause it isn't now.
I'm on stock recovery for now, but I'll probably return to TWRP shortly so I can do nandroids.
The \system partition, however is still unwriteable from within the ROM. I few folks I know are working on a workaround, but I haven't seen anything definitive yet.
Keep in mind, also, that this is a test device and there are certain "gotcha's" such as another copy of supersu somewhere in the system to run all the diagnostic software --- the result is that a \data only nandroid would require 23gigs at this point. Not gonna do it, wouldn't be prudent.

Hanging here too and also won't freeze apps.
I know SuperSU is there and working correctly because I have successfully modified files on the system partition

Stay gone after reboot too, stock boot.img as well.

But I helped myself with a little work around:
Go to TTB Settings; on the very bottom theres a setting if problems during restore occure. Change it to the classic install method. You have to validate every single app install, but hey ... As long there's no other way, fine with me

Still digging here, but I feel it is related to ro.secure=1
With this set it says its done but its not.
with ro.secure=0 adb doesn't work for me and titanium backup hangs

Same problem. Just got my HTC One, unlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP and SuperSu. TB hangs...

Hello,
I am wondering if anyone is able to restore Viber properly. I am having some strange results when I restore it. I am able to restore it using the old method mentioned here, and the app is restored with data. The problem comes when I open the app once. As soon as I open it it shows all my messages for a second then kind of resets itself, and asks for a verification code again. I have no other option then entering the code (the program acts like a fresh install). After that all my messages are gone (though the call log and contacts are still there). Feel like I have to relearn all over again. Any help is appreciated.
I have tried multiple things:
1. Restore using old method mentioned here
2. Installed from Play store, then restored only data
3. Tried making a update.zip and restoring from recovery
4. Tried to just restore about 5 times in a row ( don't think this really didn't anything, once should be enough to put the data there)

Chiming in. Same issue. Unlocked, rooted, TiBu & key installed, hangs on any restore. I tried auto/indirect and that didn't help. "classic mode" worked, although in some cases I still had to do a data restore after doing an app+data restore for some apps.

same thing. unlocked, rooted ti pro installed hangs on any restore. will restore data if i install the app then restore data (some apps I have older apps + data & cant do this tho).

I can't get TB to backup to my SD card. It keeps saying it can't write to it. Anyone know what the issue is?

I believe I fixed the hang issue and will contact the Dev to build it in. I'll provide a zip soon and instructions.

Accessing application data... is it possible?

I need the main.db file from the Skype app installed on my HTC One X. The phone is not rooted, and I read that installing a bootloader wipes the phone. Is it at all possible to get ahold of the file in any way? Is it possible to use a recovery tool to view the deleted files after unlocking the bootloader? Would it be possible to buy another HTC phone, bootload that, do a system transfer from the locked phone to the new and be able to access the files then? What about doing a system back-up to the pc? (since HTC writes that it will include free apps in the back-up?).

nope there never was a root exploit for locked bootloader.
However there is this app. Helium:

It says it can backup apps with data without the need for root. However this app relies on the fact that the app developer must have the backup flag set to allow. Developers who sell for example a banking app always denies this flag. This is to make it unable to a hacker to just transfer the app and data to another phone and hijack your banking account. Its a free choice to set this flag so its very much a guess if a particular app will be able to backup or not.
Try Helium, backup skype and restore it on some other phone you have and see if the data survives. Or boot a virtual machine with android if you don't have any other android phone.
I've never used the Helium app. I've always stuck with "mybackup pro" since it was first released or titanium. But these apps requires root.
Its been so many years I don't remember how stock rom looks like. But I know there is a backup function that backup apps and etc.

I'm not sure if this backup the app data..? I would not rely on this solution.

Thank you I'll try Helium and cross my fingers, then the HTC back-up if that fails. The back-up says it also transfers program data of free apps, so maybe I'll be lucky. I've seen a thread somewhere on restoring files post-bootloader installation - that'll be my last option if all else fails.

Yes I forgot to mention that part. You could use the built in backup tool in stock rom. Once its finished. Unlock the bootloader and then try and restore your data once the phone is back up again and running.
Of course make sure that the backup you made earlier is secure before unlocking the bootloader.
Perhaps it will work I dunno. But at least its worth a try.
