Went to the service center today and the tech spent about 30min trying to downgrade my phone but eventually said it couldn't be done. So he said that he would put in an order for another phone for me but said it may be a refurb. My phone is working great so far with the leaked 2.2 but can't get the official update like everyone else. When they call me to pick up my replacement phone should I pick it up risking getting a refurb or just wait for a fix from HTC or Sprint?
If it were me, and there wasn't anything physically wrong with the phone, I'd keep it and try to wait for a fix to this in the forums. I would guess, as far as sprint and htc are concerned, that you are just sol because you jumped the gun and didn't wait for an official final release that sprint approved for the phone. They could say that it's your problem, not theirs. You could exchange it since you have the chance to.
That's a tough call. If it were me and I had to pick the lesser of the two evils, I'd take my chances and wait it out. Or you could suck it up, take the refurb, and learn your lesson to not be so quick to flash the first thing that comes along.
I'm guessing there will eventually be a fix cooked up here to fix the snafu. I might be wrong too. Decisions, decisions!
yeah your right, I do have about a 4 or 5 days to decide because of course the phone is back ordered. So now i can see if a fix turns up until then. Boy i gotta learn to be patient.

yeah i saw this. this is what made me take my phone to the sprint store.
ok I wasnt sure... seems some can do it but others havent got a clue...Go figure..
I say root, install 2.1 and then do ota or just get froyo on it from here. Don't know if there's a root method for froyo yet tho. Didn't check.
Have u done factory reset then search for HTC update? Sometimes reps are weetarded. I was told by a Sprint rep to cancel my service because she was an idiot... long story

Alright, not sure if this has been gone over or not. What would happen if a person complained enough to Sprint or HTC about how much they dislike the GB update, would they have a way to revert you back to Froyo. Tell them you are not at all happy with the new system and you want to undo the update. Would they just tell you to go pound sand? I am almost thinking it would have to be a direct complaint to HTC, not?
Send a email to H T C
I did shortly after making the post. Just trying to find out if anyone else had tried to appeal to them on it. I will post any response from them I receive.
Better yet, send them an email asking for them to put hot naked ladies for our backgrounds on our evos and also to root them for us. :-D

Thought about that, but I figured that might be a little too obvious

According to multiple sprint reps/techs that I have talked to, they do not have the tools to downgrade back to Froyo. Doubt calling HTC would help, they will probably just say since it is software, Sprint is responsible.

I guess I must have missed this somewhere, Sprint develops the software, not HTC? Now I'm officially confused!
been there, done that..
just go check out their tweeter feeds, lots of people DID complain
i personally spoke to a customer service guy , he fed me the "trying to downgrade would make your phone innoperable" line, and basically he said sprint doesnt have the capability to do it , and htc will simply claim not to be able to do it, you are welcome to do it though, enough complaining and maybe one of the higher ups decides its worht a listen , but to be honest, root will be here long before that happens, somone already found an exploit, its a matter of making stable and usable to the public

partly true in the sense that sprint has final say on what software to push through to their users, htc develops the sense and phones firmware, but its sprints call on what final os will the devices use, wich is why the bloatware is most of the time uninstallable as its "part of the os" wich sprint pushed, htc makes it but sprint has the final say on approving it and adding whatever the hell they want to it (aka blocking hotspot and such) wich is understandable since they are the ones that have to deal with the customer
Sprint is full of criminals. :-D HTC attempts to do the right thing. :-D Sprint just keeps blocking them. HTC and myself know EXACTLY how to do it. lol. However, we are required by contract law not to spread it do to issues related to lack of a normal customers knowledge. :-D Any of you actually program chips and design circuit boards? What we do, is we find ways around the software... They really go into the chip itself.
No, but the final build that comes to our phone had sprints dirty hands all over it.

I wouldn't put it past sprint employees to illegally put stuff on our phones that would monitor our use. They're that evil. muhahahhahaha
I called my local sprint store right after the ota and asked about downgrading back to froyo. The rep said that i would have to contact the local corporate store and that they could do it. So when i called they said "just bring the phone in here and we will get you back to 2.2" Now whether or not this is true, i dont know. I never took the ota so i'm still rooted. But for those of you that did take the ota or have a new evo you might give this a shot. Knoxville, TN

99.99% chance the store is full of it. If that .01% chance proves true, Knoxville will be seeing a lot more tourism than they usually do.

You are right about them being full of it. When I called again this morning they said absolutely not. She said that all of their software stuff has been updated to 2.3 but that if i had came immediately after the ota then she could have fixed it.
Here was HTC's reply:
Thank you for contacting HTC Technical support about the issues you are having with your device since getting the latest upgrade for it. I do apologize that you are having this issue with your device and I will gladly help you with this. There is no way to revert to the software version that was on the device before the update. I first suggest you do a soft reset by pulling the battery out for about 1 minute then placing the battery back in and booting up your device. If a soft reset does not resolve the issue then you may want to do a factory reset on your device to try to resolve the issue. Factory resetting your device will clear off your device and reset it back to factory settings. If factory resetting the device does not resolve the issue the next step would be to contact your carrier for possible repair or replacement of your device.
Man, that reply is nothing but a big middle finger from HTC.

LMAO
this is the exact response i got, only the guy said "downgrading would make your device innoperable" ....yeah...but the rest of it went exaclty like this ...jokes on them , because if you notice the increasing amoutn of new people on this forum, thats people that will never take an update from htc or their carriers ever again over this fiasco, i never even thought about rooting until i went to try and find a way to go back to froyo from this pos , ended up learing a lot about android and rooting ont his past month ive been waiting for this thing to be cracked , i hope they blew it wide open and they soon add support for our beloved og evo but for now we play the waiting game
Ok, so I just got off the phone with Sprint that became heated and esculated requiring me to talk to a supervisors boss, aka manager. After calmly and politely discussing my outstanding issues with him, we casually talked about the phone, network and issues outstanding. He said that there are no known outstanding issues or bugs that they are aware of or working on with this phone. Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just relaying what he said. To further back it up, when I stopped at a local store today a "friend of a friend" at the store who is a tech also said there is no pending fix for any outstanding issues that he was aware of.
I hope I am wrong.

This is only half true. It is currently not listed as a known issue in our internal customer equipment database. Let me break it down for you:
There are three major sections in this internal site: discussion forums (self explanatory), device solutions (which sounds like misnomer, because it is essentially a full listing of recognized known issues with devices, though workarounds and solutions are given if there are any), and investigations.
LOS was in the device solutions portal, and was scheduled to be included in MR1 as stated by the "moderators" of the forums (think of them as liaisons between techs and the device engineers). However, last I checked, it was moved back to investigations; it seems to me that there is still data that they want to collect, and if I had to take a guess, i would say it's because there seems to be some variance in people's issues; for example, I think they want to separate poor signal issues and LOS issues and make sure they are troubleshooting two separate problems. Keep in mind that issues typically only make their way to device solutions when a definite cause has been identified (though not necessarily a definite solution).
However, even after the move, it was reiterated by the mods that a fix was still expected to be included in MR1. The delay for an update, they said, is that they are biding their time to see if more bugs arise, as they want to stuff as many fixes into one MR as possible (which makes alot of sense, considering none of these bugs are widespread). Also, i fully expect that only one update will be pushed prior to Samsung working on ICS for our device, taking into consideration cost effectiveness.
So...take all that for what you will.

Thank you for the insightful update! You have been thanked!
Talking to a reps boss does not mean anything this is no update at all. I ill wait for an official word from sprint
Don't know about you, but my call went all the way to head corporate offices after I told them I was filling a complaint with the FCC and the Better Business Bureau, so trust me they're aware of this issue. I'll reserve the details of my conversation to myself, but i will tell you that they know i was recording the call, boy they got pissed!

That's weird cause I just got back from a Sprint store earlier cause I was having a issue here in Boston when ever I went into the subway in which I always lose service everytime we came out the other end the phone would not reconnect to the network. It would take restarting the phone before reconnecting to Sprint. Also if ever I was in a low service area and I dropped service when I would go.into a full coverage area it still would show the big circle with the line through it, again I would have to reboot it for it to reconnect. Then I started getting the random drops of service. :-( after bring it to the store (tech center) they explained that they have had numerous complaints of the same issues. I ended up swapping out my Epic 4g Touch and got one that does not duplicate the same issues anymore but in there systems it was flagged as a issue with the Sprint Techs.

this happened on my samsung moment ALOT and it couldn't call out, apparently there's a law that says a phone needs to be able to call emergency services all the time, and it's illegal to sell a cell phone that cannot(not 100% sure). So when people complained to the FCC and they threatened an investigation, sprint updated, quick.
I spoke today with Saul, he's the maintenance guy for my local Sprint store. He said word on the street has it they are looking into the LOS issue. Then he went on a tangent talking about how he's really enjoying this new air deodorizer he had just gotten a hold off. That's when I briskly walked out without looking back.

The supposed fix did NOT fix the bug, it was a very clumsy workaround. Basically, all it did was attempt to reboot the radio if it was out of service for too long. The lockups still happened, and the soft reset of the radio didn't always work.
The only way the bug was fixed was when the devs over at SDX ported Group to the Moment. I was radio lock free for 8 months until I upgraded to the ET.

So after trying endless combo of radios/roms/sim cards etc I finally gave in and called for a replacement device to be sent to me, VZW was friendly and kind, i was hesitant because i heard ppl having to get 3-5 replacements before find a phone without the radio issue, and not having any weird banding in the screens. Luckily my first replacement phone has no radio issues, Screen is perfect radios do not drop and come back every 5 mins (I was losing both voice and data randomly) In fact i ran no signal alert, and the log is empty!!!
so dont bother with all the fuss, I think i got a good device because samsung/vzw know there was a bad batch and is weeding them out, Get your replacement device because its a hardware error.

I am in the same boat here. I actually called Verizon and the guy told me to go to the store and replace the sim card. I did this and it did help a little bit but I am still getting drops when on 4g. I am going to try new radios next before I call Verizon again to get a replacement. I am glad to hear it worked out great for you cause I am afraid of getting a bad one.

IMHO, I wouldn't even bother with flashing different radios. I tried every combo I could find. None of which really did anything. And, really, did you shell out a bunch of your hard earned money for a device that needs fixed the moment you take it out of the package?
My first gnex wouldn't stay connected (3g or 4g) for more than a minute or two at a time. When I took it back, the associate and the manager both denied ever hearing if the problem. Then, it happened while the associate was using it. First, they offered to replace the sim card (almost useless). While they were setting up the new sim, another customer came in and started discussing the same issue with the manager. He immediately started in on the same story about never hearing about the issue before. I couldn't stop laughing! I grabbed the display phone (also defective), and said very loudly, "looks like you're 3 for 3 today. This ones junk too."
While the manager never admitted to knowing about the issue, he abruptly turned to the sales associate and told him to replace both phones. They hadn't even booted my phone with the new sim.
My new friend was happy with the first replacement.
They had to go through two more before I got mine.
After all of this, I really feel that the only way to fix the problem is to replace the phone.

I'd sure like to know what the solution is and why it is taking so long for there to be an update for the Verizon version of this phone.
I have had my share of frustration with this phone....
First my gps would not fix at all, even after 15 minutes. I tried all the apps (gps status, gps aids, gps fix), all the hacks like resetting a-gps, then the sprint store told me it was a software issue from Samsung and should be solved by the ICS update. Then I got the ICS update and still no gps. I took it back to the store and again they told me it was software, not hardware, and they basically told me I had to root it to get it to work. So I did that and, although I loved AOKP, no gps. I tried different gps hacks and apps like faster fix and nothing. I yelled at sprint on the phone and finally some one agreed to send me a new phone. I got the new phone and, voila, gps fixed instantly. Even my 3g signal was better. So, moral of the story was that the gps issues I read so much about online are indeed a hardware issue. Samsung sold ****ty phones.
Anyway, my new phone came with gingerbread installed. When I activated the phone, the tech guy told me I should be getting ICS in a day or two. That was three days ago. I read a rumor that Sprint stopped pushing the update because of bugs. Is that true?
Sorry I sound so angry, but I am

I was wondering the same about the OTA update to ICS if anyone knows what's going on with it. Sprint technician told me the same exact thing. My brother's phone (identical -- SPH-D710 Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch) updated to ICS within 2 hours. It has been almost 2 weeks and I'm still on EL29 GB. I would like to know whats going on because I can still return my phone for a new one (within 14-day period with Sprint) until Wednesday.

According to a sprint rep, answering questions in the sprint community, otas are suspended for the time being. No reason given.
There are threads here with links to the ota file from google if you're interested. Its the same as if the ota pushed to your phone.

Ya, might as well not do anything...Keep everything as it is and it was given to you and be happy. Don't mess with anything or attempt to change anthing and nothing will change and if it does you can go blame someone (Sprint or Sammy) and try for some recourse from them.
Some people come to this development forum expecting it to be a 'just fix it for me type of place' or 'support forum' where they can ask a questiong and expect to be spoon fed a response.
Remember if you do anything different you might not like the results you get.
OR
You could try to try some of the great ROMs, tweaks and add-ons provided here freely and you might find what you're looking for. Like I said best place to start is sfhub's stock rooted ICS FF18.
I get pretty damn good battery anywhere from 10-12 hours of actual use (usually about 3-4 hours screen time) phone calls, loads of mail and texts, and about 1/4 to 1/3 of that time is on 4G! It's not the 24hrs I got on GB but the UI and other applications are well worth it for me. If you can't get good batter life then there are MANY things that can be done to extend it if you are willing to search this great forum and apply/try some suggestions.
Many don't care that they can learn to do just about anything they want with their device if they choose to. And collaborate with great developers and other like minded people who are willing to try out the latest cutting edge techologies and work on fixing the annoyances and issues the big guns (Samsung/Sprint) won't - like batter life, speed and performance.
Hope you find what your looking for. Good luck.
