Hello everyone,
I live in Indy where we don't currently have 4G and don't anticipate on getting it anytime soon.
However, I keep seeing threads pop up where people have flashed a rom or done something that breaks the 4G capability.
Does anyone know how this is happening? I'd like to keep my 4G intact just in case I ever get the chance to use it. Have played with several roms already. Phone came with Froyo and did the downgrade root method.
Thanks!

there is no 4g support on aosp roms because the htc code for wimax is not open source. cyanogen only uses open source code in his roms and it is being reverse engineered at this moment. all the other sense roms should have working 4g w/ no problems.

Well, I'm definitely not "in the know" regarding the 4G, but I would assume ROMs do not have the correct drivers or settings for the 4G.
However, if you do not think you will be getting soon, why not simply "lose" 4G ? Should you get 4G in your area, wouldn't flashing to an official ROM "fix" the 4G again ? That would of course require you to reinstall all your stuff, and make all the settings the way you want them again, but that's only a few hours of work usually.
For example I saw a thread about someone who went from CM6 to Fresh and 4g won't obtain a MAC address. I did the same thing. CM6 to Fresh.
Someone responded and said he'd have to return the phone for replacing.

Hey fellow Sprint Evo user from Indy. Lets not worry about 4G in Indy, that won't come anytime soon considering Sprint can't get 3G implemented across Indy.
Here's how it happened to me....
I had my first EVO and I played with 4g before I rooted and rom'd it. After flashing a rom (Stock 2.2 rooted) it worked fine.
Then I had to replace my evo... so the replacement came, I opened it, and immediately rooted it. It wasn't even activated yet, and I did not play with 4g. After flashing Fresh 3.1.0.2 I noticed 4g wasnt working. I checked my MAC address and it was the same as under the battery, but for some reason my phone would not get past the "scanning" stage.
So... here's what I did:
I flashed RA Recovery and wiped everything and flashed to the latest OTA (HTC 3.26.651.6) which can be found here. After that I started playing around with my 4g, and got it to work. Then I flashed Fresh 3.2 and my 4g still works.
Someone had recommended I delete my tree.xml file which I never tried... a complete wipe did that anyways.
Anyways... sorry to make this long. Just chipping in what I have found. I hope it helps.
Yeah I'm not entirely worried about 4G. I just don't want to do anything unknowingly permanent. I tend to sell my phones on eBay when I'm ready to upgrade and a 3G only evo wouldn't be worth much.

the only permanent 4g damage you can do is to wipe the RSA keys. nobody seems to really know how this happens. it happened to my evo and i had never even rooted before.
Yeah my RSA certs got wiped; had an issue one night flashing a ROM and latest WiMax, things didn't wipe right and all hell broke loose, ended up flashing the WiMax radio twice and that seemed to do it. Someone else mentioned this here and that seemed to do it for me.

Ahh sorry, no. I guess I see how that might have sounded like that. Meant someone else seemed to have the same issue, far as I know one cannot fix this themselves.
Sorry. New Evo coming from Sprint due to other issues, but that's how I ended up losing my WiMax.

yeah, i read his post at first like that too. when he said "that seemed to do it", i think he meant that is what wiped the rsa keys. but can we get clarification?
sprint basically needs to create a tool that restores rsa keys for the evo. i understand they have this for their 4g data cards already. i'm hoping they do this so i don't have to return my phone (which is otherwise perfect) for some effed up refurb.
EDIT: oops, didn't realize a pg 2 had appeared. so no rsa key fix here...move on...

are you within 30 days of purchase? if not, how did you get sprint to send you a new one? the CSR i spoke with told me they don't have the option to order new and when a replacement is ordered you will get refurb if they have them and new if they have no refurb. also, do you pay the sprint insurance? i think that factors into this as well. i pay the $7 insurance.

Yeah, I pay the $7 but going through Sprint, not Asurion. 30 days has come and gone but they've been quite helpful about it.

right, i agree that it falls under the manufacturers warranty and i am also dealing directly with sprint but they will not guarantee me a new phone as replacement. it's the hit or miss thing i described above. i called a corp store and they said the same thing. in fact, they said they had refubs in stock so i would walk out of the store with a refurb. i asked you about the $7 thing because i'm wondering if their systems treat the replacement differently depending on whether you pay it or not. i was literally told there is no way they could order me a new phone as replacement and as far as sprint reps go, this one sounded more "with it" than others. have you received the phone yet? is it really new?
Well, dude said it'd be new ... am waiting 2-4 business days as they didn't have any in stock at the store. He made it sound like if they had one in the back he'd hook it up, but they didn't. Am assuming it's going to be new. If not, I just hope I don't come up with some other issue if it is a refurb. Have had bad experiences with refurbished - uh - things in the past.
I didn't want to press my luck and ask if another Sprint store in the area might have any in stock, thus I could head elsewhere ... figured I'd just let it all play out. Time will tell though if it's new or not. As said, as long as I have a phone that works I wouldn't really mind a refurb. But I'd prefer a new one ...
right. i share the same opinion. prefer new over refurb. and i'm hard pressed to go the refurb route now with my only issue being non-functional 4g.
let us know what you end up with...
Yessir, will do.
Got the new phone, everything went swimmingly (do people really say that?) and it appears to be new, guy said it was new, not refurbished. Will have to check when I find the post that detailed the quick way of checking.
People were extremely helpful, 4G is back baybaaaay but also soon to be gone. But, I noticed I didn't have an SD card, not sure if he was supposed to have taken mine out and put it in, alas I just walked out without checking. Sat down with a beer and noticed and had to go back up there. All is well in the world, all is well.

I went by the print store today to ask about getting my screen replaced. the guy I talked with said that for a hardware fix it wouldn't matter if I were rooted.
But they couldn't put my phone on any kind of blacklist or anything could they? I'd rather not waste the time unrooting if I don't have to.
Thanks

Sprint will work on rooted phones for hardware issues. It's internal policy for them now as of recently. I confirmed this with my local Sprint repair store.
They may work on them, but they may also take note of the fact that you're rooted in case you have software problems. Takes 10 min, just make a backup before you do, so when you root again, easy to get back to where you were.
Do not unroot your phone to take to sprint. Ive had 2 screen rep;acements and many other replacements rooted. And that was before the alleged new policy regarding root. Used to be, they would say (after fixing), 'yeah, as long as you atleast try to make it look stock, thats all good'.
But apparently/allegedly now, even obvious root is ok. I'd still flash a stock theme
Why are there so many threads about this? people no searchy?
thanks for the info.

I would unroot it. Better safe than sorry.

I took my Evo's for screen repairs, speaker phone repair and battery issues many times, all while having MIUI flashed. No one ever said anything to me.
Sprint people didn't even know what it was. I just said "oh I downloaded a new theme."
I thought rooting was not illegal anymore. Maybe it depends on the technician you speak with. Some are cool, some are not. I say unroot just to be safe. Thank god for easy rooting practices...
screen fix and root
I think it all depends on what store you are taking it into, i took my rooted phone in and had the screen replaced no issues,
Alright, not sure if this has been gone over or not. What would happen if a person complained enough to Sprint or HTC about how much they dislike the GB update, would they have a way to revert you back to Froyo. Tell them you are not at all happy with the new system and you want to undo the update. Would they just tell you to go pound sand? I am almost thinking it would have to be a direct complaint to HTC, not?
Send a email to H T C
I did shortly after making the post. Just trying to find out if anyone else had tried to appeal to them on it. I will post any response from them I receive.
Better yet, send them an email asking for them to put hot naked ladies for our backgrounds on our evos and also to root them for us. :-D

According to multiple sprint reps/techs that I have talked to, they do not have the tools to downgrade back to Froyo. Doubt calling HTC would help, they will probably just say since it is software, Sprint is responsible.

I guess I must have missed this somewhere, Sprint develops the software, not HTC? Now I'm officially confused!
been there, done that..
just go check out their tweeter feeds, lots of people DID complain
i personally spoke to a customer service guy , he fed me the "trying to downgrade would make your phone innoperable" line, and basically he said sprint doesnt have the capability to do it , and htc will simply claim not to be able to do it, you are welcome to do it though, enough complaining and maybe one of the higher ups decides its worht a listen , but to be honest, root will be here long before that happens, somone already found an exploit, its a matter of making stable and usable to the public

partly true in the sense that sprint has final say on what software to push through to their users, htc develops the sense and phones firmware, but its sprints call on what final os will the devices use, wich is why the bloatware is most of the time uninstallable as its "part of the os" wich sprint pushed, htc makes it but sprint has the final say on approving it and adding whatever the hell they want to it (aka blocking hotspot and such) wich is understandable since they are the ones that have to deal with the customer
Sprint is full of criminals. :-D HTC attempts to do the right thing. :-D Sprint just keeps blocking them. HTC and myself know EXACTLY how to do it. lol. However, we are required by contract law not to spread it do to issues related to lack of a normal customers knowledge. :-D Any of you actually program chips and design circuit boards? What we do, is we find ways around the software... They really go into the chip itself.
No, but the final build that comes to our phone had sprints dirty hands all over it.

I called my local sprint store right after the ota and asked about downgrading back to froyo. The rep said that i would have to contact the local corporate store and that they could do it. So when i called they said "just bring the phone in here and we will get you back to 2.2" Now whether or not this is true, i dont know. I never took the ota so i'm still rooted. But for those of you that did take the ota or have a new evo you might give this a shot. Knoxville, TN

You are right about them being full of it. When I called again this morning they said absolutely not. She said that all of their software stuff has been updated to 2.3 but that if i had came immediately after the ota then she could have fixed it.
Here was HTC's reply:
Thank you for contacting HTC Technical support about the issues you are having with your device since getting the latest upgrade for it. I do apologize that you are having this issue with your device and I will gladly help you with this. There is no way to revert to the software version that was on the device before the update. I first suggest you do a soft reset by pulling the battery out for about 1 minute then placing the battery back in and booting up your device. If a soft reset does not resolve the issue then you may want to do a factory reset on your device to try to resolve the issue. Factory resetting your device will clear off your device and reset it back to factory settings. If factory resetting the device does not resolve the issue the next step would be to contact your carrier for possible repair or replacement of your device.
Man, that reply is nothing but a big middle finger from HTC.

They'll know if your phone accepted the OTA or not. I seem to recall reading that VZW would "assume" that if your phone didn't receive the OTA that you'd be rooted, or something to that effect.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. Rooting just voids your warranty, so if they knew that when you try to get a warranty replacement, they may charge you full price. That's assuming they even check it. So if you're rooted and not making a warranty claim, the phone is yours, VZW will still take your money happily.
Whenever I've been in VZW stores, the reps even have theirs rooted. So I wouldn't worry about it too much bro!
Just act like nothing is wrong and keep it rooted. Seriously

not trolling but. i dont see how they can see if you updated or not. i mean everything on the phone is google and not VZW so i dont see how they would know. if they did know then everyone with a root phone couldn't get a replacement and i was one of them. first phone i got the speaker went out in 3 weeks. i RUU to stock and took it in and they gave me another one that day.
if you do have the link to what you read i would like to see it. (again not being a d!ck. im just wondering.

I don't have a link so I'm not exactly sure, but I saw something about how some VZW tech support could see the build # (and maybe some other things you'd see in the "about phone" menu) of the device you were talking to them on. So from there, it could be assumed you were rooted if not running a stock rom.
Again, assuming they could extrapolate that information in that specific circumstance, I don't know why they would care (aside from software-related warranty issues). Most reps I've talked to in a VZ store that had some measure of expertise in their field has a rooted phone.
I believe you have nothing to be concerned about with working for them and having a rooted phone I know a few people who work for Big Red, but they don't have their phone rooted because they just don't care for it (simple minded lol).
They will entice you to upgrade to the latest greatest new phone with your employee discount lol. But assuming you're going to stick with what you have, just don't go volunteering information unless they ask since it's no of their business.
But do be prepared to sign a buttload of nondisclosure papers that you won't share any inside information (but should hehehe).

they do, one of them pulled me out of the main floor once when i asked him about the gb update, then recommended this site
but, as far as the OTA gingerbread. don't take it, the risks outweigh the benefits.
risks
. No root for a while (months, or a year)
. Bloatware, that you can't take off, see risk #1
. no roms for a while either
to be honest, ive been running GB for a month now via gingersense, and i like it, yeah the 720p is choppy, yeah, i have other stuff.
but, i'm mainly concerned about the new radio and new kernal
so, take others advice, and just wait.
Will do. And anything i hear, ill post in general. The store im going to work at is pretty chill. I rooted and s-offed my first inc, broke mms (somehow) and they exchanged itbeven looking at the bootloader.
Your phone has now contracted phone AIDS. Shoulda used protection while rooting. LD
I went into the sprint store today to exchange my bricked epic touch. I walked up to the lady and told her that my phone notified me of an update today and I accepted it and the phone turned off and now it does this. I showed her my phone and it just hangs at the Galaxy SII screen or sometimes it goes into the stock recovery and just gives errors about not being able to mount data. so she looked at it and said this is what happens when you try to root your phone. I said what are you talking about I didnt try to root it. I got an update notification and I tried to install it. She took the phone over to the manager and came back with the phone in download mode. She said see this screen, this is where you flash root at and this is what messed up your phone. There is nothing I can do. I told her again that I dont know what she is talking about and I showed her that the phone said it was on official firmware and the odin count was 0. I told her to prove that I did anything to it. Then the manager walks over and tells me to calm down or I would have to leave. I explained to him the problem and he said I have the same phone and my updates install just fine, you shouldn't have tried to root it. Sorry there is nothing I can do for you go call 611. I told him he was full of **** and that i wasn't leaving until he did something. He said get out of my store. I said "fu** you". then he said oh yeah meet me out back at 8 when I get off. I know that I shouldnt have said that to him but the whole time I was in there they were rude and they kept interrupting me and my wife when we tried to talk. My question is I though Sprint couldnt turn a phone down even if it was rooted? Plus she had not proof cause I reset my Odin count with my jig and it has the stock recovery. BTW I called 611 and they are sending me a replacement in the mail. I just couldnt believe they gave me such a hard time at the sprint store.
What I want to know is how can they tell from just looking at the phone with and Odin count of 0 and on Stock firmware how they can say you rooted the device? Cause honestly without seeing anything that shows it was rooted and it showing that you are on an official rom (be it EG30/EK02 or EL29) outside of looking at the Odin count they really have no way of knowing what is wrong.
I would guess maybe they have had other users go there that have rooted and wanted a replacement and they are looking at thing wrong but who knows. But yeah I do agree wrong things said even though I do understand you were upset and you had good reason to be for that mater but they were rude about how they handled things.
Either they have had a few people come in or those guys in that store are on xda.....The word is out
You had rooted it before though?
I wouldn't care as long as I'm getting another one.

Sprint doesn't have a policy against rooting yet, it's still covered by TEP in store with no deductable.

I just couldnt believe they gave me such a hard time at the sprint store.

hahahahahahahahahahahaha im clowing couldnt of happen to a nicer guy
If you wouldve come into My store I wouldve asked you to leave as well, Mr. I know more about this phone than you do. HAHA love karma
Exactly. I told them to shoe me proof that it was rooted. I said the Odin count is 0 and its on stock firmware. They said well there is no way that an update did this to make a phone not boot up. I am getting another phone which is all I wanted. I pay for the insurance for 2 years and never used it once. Its just the idea of how they treated me aand my wife. I was calm until he disrespected my wife by interrupting her and pretty much calling her a liar. I know I shouldn't have said that but its aggreviating. I will email Dan @ that email address plus I told 611 about it so someone is supposed to call me back. Thanks for the help guys.

Actually they do have a policy about rooting. I've seen memos posted by a sprint emplyee that say that if a phone is suspected to be rooted, to handle it as normal and make a note of it ... it was in the og epic forum at one point.
If they could get it in download mode, why didn't you just Odin a ek02 build or something.

Are you sure you were in a corporate sprint store and not a third party store? I have been in a couple of the stores that were not corporate and they are complete idiots.

They can't refuse a rooted phone, as of right now.

Sprint corp stores are pretty pathetic in my area so Ive found the last 8 years
Most Employes put out negative vibe , lack experience and very rude .
4389 Virginia Beach Boulevard.
Virginia Beach, VA = A customers worse nightmare that comes true on entry very very long wait time all reps & techs suck.
2076 South Independence Boulevard.
Virginia Beach, VA = Pure hell came close to knocking out rep .
1412 Greenbrier Pkwy Ste 134.
Chesapeake, VA 23320 = OK service
I would definitely take it to escalationd through dans office and get their asses in trouble. they ****ed up. and the manager telling you to meet him outside was very unprifessional. he should be fired.
Poor service...
That is pretty absurd treatment. As a tech at a corporate Sprint store, apologies to you. Though rooted devices are generally frowned upon by most carriers, Sprint is the most relaxed I have ever seen. Here's a breakdown of my personal approach to the subject.
If a customer brings a rooted device in with complains of software issues, I will try to resolve them without a hard reset (Factory reset) first. I'll tell them up front that if I can't do so it could result in a hard reset or factory flash using computers we have to do just that, resulting in loss of root access. If there are issues that appear as hardware that can only be resolve by replacing the device, I will need to rule out custom software as the source. (EX: The customer's GPS will not get a lock or shows them pointing the wrong way or they have lost their HSA keys and can't authenticate on 4g) Meaning I will be happy to replace it if re-flashing it did not resolve the issue. Though I am not officially allowed to provide information for rooting or support the process, I will never default to turning away a customer for wanting more from their device.
The exception is when someone is being an ass about it. I have had customers swear they have paid for 4g hot spot service, and it's not working. As if I don't have access to finding out whether that's true. People beat the crap out of these devices and we fix or replace them all day long - software can almost always be resolved with a simple 5-minute re-flash.
To everyone here - your best bet when taking your device in for repair is never dishonesty or douchebaggery. When someone lies to me to try to get their way, they generally assume I am dumb enough to fall for it. This is insulting and makes me less likely to be their advocate. I am an experienced technician, and have been rooting, jailbreaking, and modding nearly every electronic device I own for years.
If being polite and curteous, and accepting (or requesting for that matter) a reflash don't work, try another store and play dumb.
Oh - and if someone told me to meet him outside, I would - and bet on him censoring that comment more carefully in the future.
The manager said to meet him outside at 8, after he got off? That's enough to get him fired.
EDIT: I work with Customer Service at my local Grocery store and I've had a customer who cussed the living s*** out of a friend of mine who also works in Customer Service. She couldn't cash in a $10,000 lotto ticket so the woman cussed out my friend. My friend was very professional about it and didn't retaliate at all. If my friend retaliated at all, I can guarantee you right now she'd be jobless.
I always buy my phones at my local Best Buy; I made friends with the phone dept. manager a long time ago, and, whenever I have done something stupid, i just take whatever phone back there, and they help me out..
I agree, some of the Sprint store employees can be real assholes, but, considering I hate dealing with the public, and alot of these folks get lied to, threatened, and talked to like pieces of **** all day, I can understand why they can become assholes sometimes..
But, it is a fact, that Sprint currently does NOT refuse to work on Rooted phones at this point, so, obviously this douchebag was just being an asswiper..
All I can say is, they were completely in the wrong.
I've rehashed this time and again, but we're not allowed to turn someone away for rooting.
I don't know how many times I have to make these people read their M&Ps, but this is bordering on ridiculous.
Now, to the OP. .if you could get your phone in to download mode...well then it's not bricked. Why did you try to get it exchanged?
