Hi
I am trying to get my old Xperia Play working again. I had no issues during the two years when it was my main phone, but I since have got the HTC One, and let the wife use the Xperia as her second phone. As far as i can tell, the rings on her fingers have damaged the screen. It does not respond to about 90% of commands, but there are some areas on the screen that still work. Typing is a nightmare, you have to turn the phone 90 and 180 degrees for certain letters to work, and some don't work at all...
I am pretty sure that a new screen would fix it, but somebody I work with said that even a new screen would not fix this issue as it's an old phone that relies on pressure on the screen to work.
Please can anyone advise what parts I would need to repair it. I am happy to do it myself, but don't know if it's a lost cause?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Xperia play screen is not pressure based. I don't like this kind of people that think they know best. I actually think that you actually can replace a pressure based (capacitive I think?) screen btw.
Anyway, all you need to replace is most probably just a digitizer. It's not that expensive and the repair is not that hard to do.
Here's a replacement guide that I used mainly because it's high resolution and you can actually see which screw originally was, that's really helpful.

Thanks friend, I will give this a go!
Do you think this will be ok?

hey all i am currently having a problem with me htc s621.
when my phone is on it randomly turns to a white screen after a 2 day period or so. and after a while of turning off phone/taking out battery/taking out sim card and doing this a lot it goes back to normal. im getting pretty mad and was wondering if i need to get my phone replaced or what.
any advice is helpfull. and the phone is not updated to 6.1 or anything like that. btw it all started to happen after i dropped my phone one time. i am not sure if that helps or not.
thanks in advance

The phone may be damaged. Is it a stock phone or has it be flashed with a rom?
it is purely stock no upgrades at all. today it did something new, it was white then 20 min later wen back to normal without me turning it off or anything. should i bring it in into warintee or anything i can do to help it?
I have seen simular situations before. It is possible that when you dropped it, the ribbon cable connecting the LCD to the board became dislodged and is only making a partial connection. Or the LCD is just plain broken and needs to be replaced. You can get a new LCD on ebay for around $30 USD and do it yourself or take it to a repair shop and have then look at it for you.
i believe i will take it into the store tommorow. get a professional statement and opinion to see what i should do. thanks alot guys

I recall reading some time back concering the cause of the white screen had something to do with the backlight time, try making some adjustments with the backlight. Also do a serious search for that old thread dealing with this problem..............!
You would probably need a new screen and the best option would be to replace it yourself because you could find a cheap one off ebay and then just youtube and you could find on how to install the new screen.
About two months ago, my screen decided to die. I ended up getting a new phone, but I still had my Play sitting here bothering me. So I decided to get to fixing it.
When I tore it apart, I thought that the digitizer had died, but what I found was actually the connecting the digitiser, LCD and Buttons together was damaged.
So I ordered one on ebay for about $10. When I got the cable, it seemed to be about 3-4CM shorter than the OEM one. Which supports why I think this may have been a design error on Sony's part. What was happening was Sony's god awful mechanism for sliding the screen up and down had pinched the cable, and caused it to be damaged.
I know this might be a longshot, but I think that some people might be able to save a dead device by replacing this one simple part, I know it worked wonders for my play, as well as a friends.
I will post a link to the part as soon as my post count is up.
So not the digitalizer?

I am having this problem as well. touchscreen doesn't work nor does the home button. Volume down button seems to fail while in CWM recovery as well. I was thinking about replacing the digitizer but now I'm not so sure. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated
If OP's saying what's busted is the part where all the digitizer, physical buttons, and LCD converge, that's the SLIDER FLEX. I replaced mine twice already. It gets pinched very easily. That's the weakness of slider phones. You have to accept that from the moment you decided to buy the Xperia PLAY. It happens to all sliders, live with it, face it.
Hello there.
I bough my second hand Xperia Play few months ago and it was fine. I rooted it, but kept stock ROM, as I found out my device have forbidden access to bootloader (and it cannot be done, or at least that's how I understood it - nevermind it now).
It was fine, until let's say 3 weeks ago. My phone started to graphically glitch in a very weird way. It grew worse and worse and now I cannot use it anymore ... unless it "wants" to, because sometimes the phone works perfectly normally.
I captured the problem with my second phone ... it's not so high quality, but please try to imagine the weird colours and shapes you see on the screen, only that in reality, they are extra sharp. It looks like colourful grains of sand

I suppose something has happened with graphic chip in the device and while this has happened before (to my w550i), this case is a bit different. It works sometimes. I push OFF button and it shows grain. I push it again and grain is there again. But sometimes it normally shows me unlocking slider, I unlock it and it's OK. Sometimes it stucks during unlocking and while the phone works, display shows last working state, for example unlocking slider in the middle of sliding.
I've tried to search for such topic, if it happened before, but wasn't able to come with good search terms to start with : /
I also tried to restart the phone many times, to no avail (grain display is simply during startup too), or even install ROM again through SE updater ... nothing. That was my last choice, now I'm clueless.
Anyone who knows about this issue, from different mobile phone (it doesn't matter), or if it can be repaired by me, or in shop for money (that wouldn't cost more than new phone) or simply any hint you can give me ? I'll be glad, will appreciate it.
EDIT: I added photo too:

Again - it looks like that, only much sharper.

Imo that should be the flex cable problem, the cable which connects the motherboard and the screen, is damaged. Unroot, send to Sony centre, or maybe you can purchase it from eBay and fix it yourself.

Thanks man a lot, because you gave me what I needed (second to) most - search terms through which I can find more.
I knew that there has to be cables connecting display with main body somewhere, such as there are similar cables in hinges between notebook display and main body ... but I supposed they would be well crafted, because the mobile is suppose to be sliding between these two states quite often.
I also saw this, to which your another post helped me to go:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646537
I will now try to learn how to take the phone apart (some are easy, some are hard to do so) and hope for the best. The good thing is that display is probably OK. Display usually costs a lot, right ?
So if I won't be able to take it apart by myself and will be forced to go to repair shop, I will have KNOWLEDGE ( ) and won't be fooled by greedy repairmen, who would want to tax me new display or something apart of cable-replacing/connecting.
Good luck to you mate. All the best.

OK, news update - so far, nothing real has happened. I contacted one friend whose father repairs stuff, maybe it will help. I also bought set of T4 screwdriver heads so I can remove those buggers on the phone (and if that father-repairman plan fails I'll just do it myself). I also contacted guy from whom I bought the phone (because it's only 3 months old), maybe he will feel a bit guilty (it's actually a shop, not just person) and help me to repair it for bargain price.
We'll see.
And just one question for you, or anyone else who ever did this. How often it is needed to replace flex cable ? Or in other words - how often just connecting it again is enough ? Because buying form ebay isn't option for me (no credit card, no paypal, or whatever is needed - and I live in Central Europe). Not sure if such specialized parts are freely available to buy in electronic shops. After all, Xperia Play isn't so widely spread android phone and to add to improbability - flex cable replacement isn't usual problem too. Or is it ?
Just food for thoughts.
This is my problem:
In may, I bought a Xperia Play on second-hand web from a guy on my city. In time, the phone got wet by rain, and digitizer started to go sometimes crazy, specially texting. I could survive with it.
After 2 months, the Ribbon Flex crashed, it showed screen completely screwed up, like in TV, you know, that problem that happen to everyone after sometime . So I changed it.
The point its, when i changed it, my old Digitizer stopped working ok, it gave too much problems. For 2 minutes it worked normally, except the base of the screen (that zone of the screen didnt detect my fingers, dont know why). Then, it wouldnt work totally, till, in some moments I took the phone, it would work for only minutes. I controlled the phone with the pad, but when it went out of battery by accident, I wasnt able to unlock again, as I couldnt touch and unlock the Pin code so I can use the phone again with the pad.
So I buyed a new one, which of course, I dont know why it doesnt work too (this replacement comes from a trusted dealer from my uncle electronics shop, so for the moment, I dont think the new digitizer itself its the problem).
What the hell Im supossed to do man? Im starting to go panic, because I dont know if the Motherboard have something to do with all this, and that means Phone dead right? Ive seem a lot of posts, all I could google with the same problem, and there is a lot of different cases and solutions with the damned Xperia Play, all starting with the damn unresponsive digitizer.
I saw the guide above amd i already posted there, but I wanted to leave a thread. Please, I need your help if its posible. Thank you at least for reading this.
Try replacing your flex cable again. Something like this happened to be, but the digitizer was completely unresponsive. After I replaced it, it works fine.
Quick introduction. For experience and training purposes I started buying broken phones (LCD, digitizers) and try to repair them. I bought HTC Wildfire S with just cracked touch screen. Bought parts and replaced. When assembling phone back the screen did not work on the whole area, what I mean it was working like partially, only vertical left hand side was working. Like writing text message, R works, then E and T doesn't.
Tried to disconnect the digitizer connector, maybe it was not touching properly, couple times. But that didn't work. It was just working in different places than before. Found here a thread about a problem for different digitizer versions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1942259
But the thing is I have no idea how to approach anything that these people suggest. I don't know how to replace software, reinstall it or whatever involves soft. I would like to learn too.
If you have any ideas or suggestions please share with me, if not I will just sell the phone back as not working. Thanks
