[Q] Upgrading with JUMP! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am due for an upgrade in about a month or so. I have the S4 right now and it's been rooted and flashed.
I was just wondering, when I trade in my phone to get my upgrade, should I restore it to stock and use triangle away or is that not necessary?
Do they check to make sure the phone hasn't been rooted/flashed? I planned on restoring it to stock anyway, but I was just curious.

I doubt they will check, but if you're on 4.2.2 you might as well restore to stock and use triangle away for good measure, if you're on 4.3 just restore to stock 4.3 because using triangle away won't do any good..

I've returned two different S4's to two different T-Mobile locations over build quality problems and they did in fact check status of one of those phones. I think it depends on your specific store's policy.

Just wondering, if the store clerk accepts the phone and fails to check for Knox tampering it's that it? Or can they later put a charge on your account if someone actually checks at a later date?
Wondering because if at some point I might get charged I might want to report the phone as lost and at least use it for testing and Wi-Fi etc..
I know jump hasn't been available that long but I was wondering if anybody new their procedure.

I suggest that if you find one store to be unreasonable then go to another store. Try both a corporate location and a franchise location before you give up. Good luck.

Thank you for your insight. I am not suggesting fraud, simply that if they would charge me for the entire phone then I should be allowed to keep it.
Yet I might not have that choice if they keep the phone in the first place.
Fraud would be not to pay for it.

I thought you were referring to making a claim for insurance purposes. I will edit my post to remove the inference.

I've done 2 warranty exchanges. S3 within the first 14 days. And S4 after about 4 months. By mail.
All I did was Odin to stock.

Precautions before selling phone

Hey guys,
I'm thinking about selling my Incredible and grabbing something new, not sure what yet. I have concerns on how to wipe the phone clean obviously I should do a wipe data and remove my SD card but other than that what else should be taken care of? I'm also curious how my number can be erased from the phone from 'about phone' in settings. Thanks!

Not sure about the phone number question. I'd imagine that when you activate a new phone on your line it will deactivate the old phone. Don't quote me on that though.

Unfortunately I think your number will probably be there until its activated on another line. Idk, I've sold a couple phones and never had an issue.

I suppose that's just something I'll have to get over. Another thing, how are bad ESN on phone's created?
last thing before it goes in the box that i would do unroot and ruu with stock radio...
If you knew how to do the manual programming you could put in a blank number you could also call verizon and as them if they can remotely update or walk you through the steps to remove your number just explain why and what your doing they might help you out...

no but if they are not a tech savy person who is going to flash it and they try getting verizon to repair it or something if they break it they will find a nasty suprise in it being rooted. It being rooted might also be something a buyer either wants or does not want... Better safe 100% stock rather than hacked when they get it.
Yeah its really up to you, when I was buying my phone on eBay I saw that some people advertised that their phone was rooted as kind of a selling point and they definitely didn't seem to go for any less money. I personally sold my previous phone (Droid 2) stock though.
As for the ESN, as long as your account isn't delinquent and the phone isn't stolen, it will be fine.
Also, I don't know where you're selling it, but www.Swappa.com is a website all for android phones. Typically ones with root sell for higher, but you can always give the buyer an option!

Replacing Phone (With KNOX_WARRANTY)

Alright, so one of my buddies that works at T-Mobile, he Claims that as long as your phone is on Stock (Or looks like Stock) you should be able to turn your phone in for a Replacement or towards a different phone with Jump.
Obviously the phone I will be attempting to trade in has its Knox_Warranty flag at 0x1
I am going to try this tomorrow with one of my S4's that I unrooted today and back to 4.3 Stock. Anyone that has been curious on Replacement or upgrading with Jump etc, I should find out tomorrow hopefully. Wish me luck.

I wouldn't worry. I did a warranty exchange cause the back camera stopped working. All I did was Odin back to stock.

I have a friend who works at a store, I asked him if they are told to look for anything (customization, etc) or even check the bootloader.
He said the only thing they are told to look for is water damage, other than that they don't care. All they do when you Jump is send the phone back and i'm assuming TM just erases everything and resets the device before sending it out as a refurb one.
Just upgraded my phone, no problems, you're good to go

To confirm what you said earlier, what T Mobile is doing is taking your used phone and doing a complete factory refurb on it. That means a total wipe of the entire memory and a clean now install, as well as replacing worn out body panels like a cracked glass or scratched up plastic peices, etc.
Doing this the way a factory refurb does it that will wipe out Knox and flash counters and custom ROMs and all that jazz. They have equipment that will do what Odin can't. So they don't care.
If you do get a T Mobile store rep who does check the bootloader and makes a big deal out of the Knox flag, just take your phone to another T Mobile store. Or come back to that one the next day and talk to someone else. 9 out of 10 store clerks are not phone nerds like us. They are people with minimal phone training just working a retail sales job. If you get get the 1 phone nerd, another store will have 4 guys who don't even know what a bootloader is.
Once T Mobile takes the phone from you and processes the exchange, they cannot come back later and claim that it doesn't qualify. If they did you can just say you have no idea what they are talking about and their rep inspected prior to the exchange so something must have happened after it left your possession.

Probably won't. You should be able to still send it in for a replacement and get a different model back.

Thanks. I asked in here because two T-Mobile Reps told me if the warranty is void on the phone, then they cannot honor the jump program. And seeing as they are accepting knox tripped devices for the jump program, it seems like knox does not void your warranty.. which makes me like Samsung even more (and T-Mobile)

T-Mobile stance on rooted phones?

Food for thought. As a part of the "T-Mobile My Account" app is a device health (beta) page that will scan the phone for various settings. If you tap on either the "Battery state" or "Device performance" and look for a box that says "Show all test" being rooted is among the list. When I read over the various warranties and agreements, I was looking specifically for anything about root, rooting, rooted, "" access. The best I found only mentions that issues caused by 3rd party software are not covered.
Seeing this makes me wonder if T-Mobile as part of its "un-carrier" move may be opening up to the idea.

This is why I don't understand people's hate towards Samsung's Knox when they trip it due to rooting and custom TOM's.

Cause on an HTC or nexus device you can completely go back to stock and have no evidence of rooting. With Knox, you're screwed. There's no resetting it. I don't know how LG works, this is my first LG device

Just out of curiosity, what is T-Mobile's stance? I'm very new to TMo. So new, I switched/ordered my phone on Tuesday and due to a "Systems Issue" I don't even believe my phone has been shipped yet.

Honestly, if you return to stock (completely) and then go in for warranty, you should be okay. The official stance is no, but I know that 99 times out of 100 you're not gonna have an issue. Unless it's blatantly obvious that you caused your issue by messing with your phone. If you ever need anything when dealing with Tmobile feel free to pm me on here. That goes for anyone who reads this.

Returned my g2 yesterday, wiped it but left it stock rooted with twrp recovery. She didn't say anything about it.

Yup, and things like this happen where reps are completely oblivious. It's not uncommon.
I only said what I did because I know quite a few managers from the bay area to Sacramento, and a good portion of them are into rooting phones and train their staff (not cause they want to screw you over, just to make sure that they retain their job) to look for it.
So yeah, you'll probably be fine if you don't unroot your phone, but an extra 10 minutes of work won't hurt you.

I usually get my best results by going into the store and being a real jerk, swear at the counter people, call them names then tell them you rooted the phone and now there are some issues....

I agree with your comments; I have rooted every phone I have had over the years with ATT/Sprint/TMO, and NEVER "restored to stock" ANY of the phones I turned in for upgrade/repair/etc, and never once had an issue with ANY carrier.
If you act like a jerk, and hassle the store personnel, you will always have a problem; if you are polite, professional, and dont try to blame someone else for your problem, 99% of the time, you wont have a problem turning in a rooted phone.
Treat people like YOU want to be treated, and you will always be taken care of; at least that's always been my experience..
I have always just unrooted before I went in. Some times I have watched them check the phone and worried if they would try to update it. That was the case with both my HTC Evo 4g and Samsung Galaxy S3 with Sprint. I was trying to avoid the hboot 1.5 and KNOX updates. Only issue I had was when my mms stopped working. Even unrooted the stock messenger wouldn't send them. I was asked if it was rooted and was hoping the unroot file worked. Ever time the phones have finished as I was parking in the lot so I never really had a chance to make sure it was all back to stock.
When I picked up the G3 and changed to T-Mobile I asked and was told unroot it. If no one knows it was rooted then you're good.

I have had to over the years exchange a few phones with t-mobile, been with them going on 8 years with 5 lines. I always unroot and set back to stock with that said tho, I had to exchange a note 3 for non working GPS and although I did set it back to stock I obviously couldn't reset the knox counter. So far, haven't heard anything about it and that was almost a month ago. While I have no official comment, I do believe t-mobile doesn't care so long as the issue is not related to anything you have done.
I want the g3, but am waiting for root. Just don't care for phones I can't restore to, uninstall unneeded apps etc.
i went on store at LG G3 launch and i showed my note 3 to swap with G3. via JUMP
my phone is rooted, i even teased the girl representative that i have the coolest ROM on it lol. she just smiled and check the note 3 physically. i even let her do a factory reset on the note 3. few mins later i have the black G3 on my possession
I'm not sure what the big deal is. If we can flash a stock ROM onto a phone I'm sure they can, probably easier than we can. It's the hardware condition that really matters.

Phone not receiving texts/calls or sending texts. Help appreciated.

No stranger to rooting or the like. But I recently switched to Verizon and got an m8 after many years on Sprint. Text messages continually fail to go through...or they say they fail but they do go through. Meaning I resend the same text many times without realizing it. Its also missing many incoming calls and never ringing. I don't receive texts a large portion of the time. Ive already missed many work calls. Stock unrooted.
A quick google search shows me I'm not alone on the problem. But I've been searching for several days and can't find a solution to it! Someone please help me out. I've posted several threads on different forums asking for help and no one seems to reply. If I can't fix it I'll probably return the phone

Maybe try running the Verizon RUU and see if it'll fix the problem. Just make a backup of your apps/personal data before doing it.
Official RUU 3.28.605.4 EXE/ZIP
Don't know what software version you're on but I see that they have RUU for earlier versions if you're on an older version. That is in the Verizon forums so you can look around there for additional info etc

I totally understand, sorry about that lol. I just got fed up of people not replying to so many other threads ive posted with this question and I've only got a few days left to decide if i want to keep this phone. I was hoping for a more technical fix, but thank

Honestly, if the phone is brand new and still stock, I wouldn't mess with it, as its not your problem.
Verizon refused to send me a new phone despite it being in the 14 day period. Any solutions?

This is a breach of their own terms. I agree with the above suggestion to raise hell, scream fraud, threaten to take your business elsewhere, file a BBB fraud claim, etc.
If you paid with a credit card, you may also be able to contact your card company to stop payment for reason of fraud.
Is it a genuine Verizon company store you are dealing with, or just an "authorized dealer" (which is basically just a independent franchise). Because the latter may not be obligated to honor the warranty terms. At least, that is how it works on AT&T (and I never recommend buying from such dealers for this reason, among others).

Tmobile Store Checks For Root?

Hey guys, so I just went to a tmobile store to trade my phone in on the Jump Program and the associate said I'll be right back I have to scan your ID and hook your phone up to my computer for a second. He returned a moment later saying that my phone was not eligible to trade in because his computer said my phone had been rooted or jail broken. He asked if I had rooted it and I lied and said no. Now I didn't remove the root or TWRP from my phone because I never ever had them check all I did was restore my TWRP backup I took of stock when I first rooted my device. I am baffeled. I had no clue they were even doing this now. Anyone have any experience with this? I am going home to completely unroot and then go to a different store and try again. Are the carriers getting this smart now? I searched but hadn't found any similar experiences

The phone rooted or not shows with "MyTmobile" app under "device management". You will see a warning about the device is no longer secure. So yes, Tmobile knows. TWRP tripped the Knox warranty to 0x1. So unless you could find some unexpirienced csr even the warranty is voided.
Some say it doesn't matter but it does now for Tmobile.

Yes they do have system apps that spy on device status and some other thing but that's another story. Its not just their apps but the system apps located in the app manager under all apps. You should notice that there are 3 apps(system that will auto start even if force closed and can not be disabled/removed unless super user access. Also log you GPS coordinates and more. Should notice a jump in CPU and mabile data usuage upon unlock/lock and power on/off/reboot. Logging with/out data enabled. And funniest is ota patches for tether exploits or data hack/mods but still not chance of getting a simple android update ota lmao. As for warranty least jump/replacement so far hasent effected it on me end probably because how much their making on these phones now since the manufacturers been cut out lol. Could change I'd flash the ota before either jumping or replacements is possible.
Forced me to root.
Right, of course, TWRP tripped Knox. So they're checking, be advised. Root only without tripping and don't run a custom recovery.

Was able to replace my note other day but had to install Ota and stock recovery. Side note I also downgraded back to Ota kk from lp no issues. Least this time. Set up was Ota this time. But on note 3 had custom rom lp but had hidden su binary temp, and hid su and other apps from being seen by Android via search bar and install devices. Oh and never had installed/updated or enabled any tmobile Knox or lookout apps. Device status stayed official offlinedevice) and online under device status. Even with xposed installed(status fix) no issues. But again have to hide stuff and never allow their Spyware aka device manager(the main issue) lookout kies and knox. Can try and see if u downgrading from lp to fix/reset knox. Since then system updated and noticed harder to keep them from spying.
Ps never do the device diagnostics. Smh data mining with a pinch of Spyware lol. Still track your things when you opt out but least your have a legal way to sue if we get chance. Opting out don't mean crap sadly. Thought Google put an end to bloat ware and mucking up android after they released lollipop. But ig we still can dream for that day
Ps Ps twrp was issue for knox being tripped people lol is when you root device and/or install rom/recovery. Thank Sammy for charging 600 or 800 then voiding warranty when you do decide to root device(I did simply to fix stuff broken in lp and the ton of cap Sammy messed up or deleted)

Yes, Knox was tripped but that wasn't the issue. I ended up calling my friend who works in a T-Mobile store and explained the issue to him. He said " yeah we have a computer in the back that we can hook your phone up to and check if your rooted or jail broken but I have never heard of anyone actually using it! He said to remove root and custom recovery and go to his store. He said they won't check at my store but just do it to be safe. So I went home and odin flashed back to stock and went to his store. His store did it in 10 minutes no problem. They didn't even take it into the back like they did at the other store.
Lesson is that it depends on what store you go to. They have the capability to check but if they do or not depends on the store. Also the guy at the original store said that his machine would know if it was rooted even if it was undone. Don't know if this is true or he was bluffing lol. Just wanted to share my experience with the community.

Umm, first things first, never let anyone take your cellphone out of your sight to "check" it. I don't care if you have nothing to hide on that device, that is not proper procedure for any cell phone store. That dude was most likely looking for nudes on your phone while "in the back", and if there were any, you can be sure they're now in his possession. Not to mention he probably read through most of your texts, since that's where the nudes would most likely be.

Thanks for the concern But I was going to tmobile with the intent of jumping to another phone so I had already factory reset to wipe all my data before going to the store. This is my regular practice.

That's all well and fine, but it doesn't change the fact that they should never have taken the phone "in the back" out of your sight for any reason. The time I Jump'd a phone, they gave me my new device and a padded envelope to send in my trade-in, they never took my old device from my possession.
This is new, never happen to me, I just go and trade for new devices. I guess it's difference now.
