I have a galaxy nexus
ROM : XenonHD 4.2.2 (tried Stock 4.2.2 for 2 weeks)
Baseband : 19250XXLJ1 (was on earlier ones as well)
Kernel : Stock
Location : Bangalore(India)
Connection : TataDoCoMo
My internet (primarily using 2g, sometimes 3g) and it drops very often.
To enable it, the below steps does NOT word:
1. Toggling flightmode
2. Restart mobile
Only one step works (75% success)
Manually search for network and select network automatically and sometimes to manually select the network.
Please help.
Update: (Strict 2g mode enabled)
I've been sitting in my seat since posting the previous post. Checked my internet and i do not have data connection. Gonna enable it now.
Even manual selection of network dint give me data connection after waiting for 5 mins.
Enabled and disabled flight mode - waited for 5 mins - no go.
Gonna restart and check - last option - no go.
Now i disabled data - strangely, i lost signal for a few second.
Enabled data again - waited for 2 mins - and walah it came.
I dont know on what basis the internet comes and goes like this. It is not humanely possible to do all these steps, just to get the internet enabled. Can anyone help me from this plight.
Can anyone please offer some advice?
You can change rom, and check if it will be fixed.
What kind of network strength do you see in “Status“ page in settings? Post a screenie.
Try a different ROM to be sure it isn‘t a network fault.

I tried a lot of methods and this worked finally. Am on latest radio release I9250XXLJ1. Browse and install it if you are not on it.
Dialed *#*#4636#*#*
selected "Testing"
Selected "Phone Information"
Scrolled down and set the option of "Set preferred network type" as GSM auto (PRL)
Noticed change in GSM Service, GPRS service.
Next time, this dint work tried the below method and finally worked.
At the bottom right corner, the properties option indicated by 3 perpendicular dots took me to change Radio Band.
I tried with the first 5 option with no network coverage and finally AUS Band started giving me uninterrupted data signal.
Success...

I have Edge access from Vodafone in India called mobile connect. I worked like a charm on stock HTC 2.2 ROM. I finally took the leap after finding HTC is not offering complete Gingerbread.
I found CM7 really good but one annoyance after having some troubles with importing SMSs.
I flashed 7.0.3 yesterday. Everything seems fine except data connection. It works randomly in my home. Works properly outside.
If my make a phone call then it connects and 'E' appears with two bars but only uploading. nothing downloads.
I tried *#*#4636#*#* and in phone information status appears as below when i choose "Enable Data connection"
==========DATA============
StatecInactiveState is connecting to vodafonegprs,1296,40427,www,,,,,,-1,*.

and after sometime is changes to
==========DATA============
StatecInactiveState disconnected with last try at 7.53PM fail because Radio not Available
==========================
I tried all options under "Set preferred network type" such as GSL Only, GSM Auto (PRL), GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) but none worked.
if Radio is not working then how are phone calls and SMS working !!!
I had flashed latest Radio also after flashing CM 7.0.3.
I read a lot about people losing 2G/3G data connection after switching from Wifi but I don't feel that is the problem with my phone.
Could anyone pls help?
Thanks in advance,
Ashish
I got the same problem. Probably. It does not work anywhere. The phone seems only uploading but it does not do anything, even the icon shows uploading. But no green icon of "H" or "E". I have GingerVillain based on CM7.
Upgrade to the 7.1.0RC release. A lot has been fixed since 7.0.3.

It seems that my APN settings was somehow changed - I had to set it according to my operator settings again. Dont know why or how but it was changed to "disabled_internet" instead of "internet" in APN.
it solved after I played around with radio band by pressing *#*#4636#*#*
I dont know what exactly solved it but after staying online when i was at office and outside, connection has been alive.

I had a Defy that wouldn't connect to the internet when on wifi as I described in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137085
I sent it to Motorola to fix and the first time they didn't even diagnose the correct fault even though I filled it in on their support page. It came back to me with a software upgrade that didn't fix anything.
I sent it back again with a full description of the fault and this time I think they didn't even bother to read the description. They've sent it back to me a second time with the same fault present and the list of tests they did doesn't seem to include anything to do with wifi.
I am afraid that if I send it back a third time they'll just give me the runaround again. What options do I have? The phone is still within Warranty, they owe me a fix or a new phone but how can I force them to honour the warranty?
Cheers.
Bump for great justice.
Read your original post. Have you tried using a different wifi?
Also, try this: turn ON your airplane mode. Then turn ON your wifi. Wait until you get a wifi signal. Then: dialer > *#*#4636#*#* > phone information > tap "run ping test". If you "PASS" your wifi just connected and works.
Thanks but it doesn't really connect to wifi, just stops at getting the ip address. I have tried on a different wifi network. I actually have two in my house as one won't cover the whole house. I also took the phone to my friend's business and tried connecting there with no joy. On the rare occasion it does connect I can't get on the internet.
OK, but have you tried it in airplane mode with wifi on?
If you still cannot connect, leave it with airplane mode on and wifi on. Do the dialer > *#*#4636#*#* > phone information thing and scroll down to "set preferred network type" What does it say? It should say "unknown."
Back out of this, turn airplane mode OFF and wifi ON. Go back into the INFO menu (dialer > *#*#4636#*#* > phone information) and scroll down to "set preferred network type". It should say "GSM only". Does it? If not, what does it say? Also, if it doesn't you can manually change it to "GSM only". Try all that and please tell us what happens in each step.
It happens as you describe. Network type unknown for the first step and GSM auto PRL for the second step.

OK... if you have airplane mode OFF and wifi ON and you see it sats "GSM auto PRL", did you try changing it to "GSM only"? From my experience you cannot get wifi if it says "GSM auto PRL". Trying changing it to "GSM only".
I have the same problem too.I've try your methods but it won't work.

Can you be more specific? If you changed "GSM auto PRL" to "GSM only", did it...
a) Refuse to change?
b) Change back after you exited?
c) Stay as GSM only and still not connect to wif?
Basically I want to know if I can demand a replacement handset from Motorola. I've tried all the fixes I can find on these forums and now Motorola have twice failed to fix it. I'd rather not send it to them a third time and have the same result.

If it stayed at" GSM only" this suggests your phone is trying to do the right thing. Because in order to switch from "GSM auto PRL" to "GSM only" it needs to actually detect a wifi signal, not just have the wifi activated on the phone. Have you tried changing your router settings?
Have a look at this post from the moto forum: (https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/456261#456261)
"Why does my Defy constantly lose its WIFI connection despite an excellent signal strength?
I experienced roughly the same problems: good WIFI signal but little or no traffic at all.
It seems I have found a solution for my specific case - maybe it works for others as well.
My Setup:
WLAN router: Linksys WRT160N (Firmware Version: v1.53.0)
Moto Defy (MB525, Firmware version: 2.1-update1, System version: Moto_Version.2.34.1.MB525.Retail.en.SEA)
Originally I had the router running in wirless-N mode. After reading that this could be the problem, I changed to wireless-G mode. This seemed to slightly improve the situation, though still the WIFI connection was far from satisfying (medium signal strength, but no response / traffic). With my laptop computer things were fine regardless of the wireless mode.
The WIFI router serves roughly 6 devices.
I then stumbled upon the QoS or WMM (or WME) setting for the router which originally was enabled.
Since I disabled that the connection is fast and stable and i didn't have problems anymore."
I've tried G already but the QoS thing was new. Still no luck ofc.
I'm running my Captivate glide on Orange network (device is unlocked).
I rooted it following all the steps shown in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378082 (BTW, works great thanks).
I kept AT&T rom, but issue happens also with Rogers rom.
This happens only on 3G/3G+ connections.
WiFi works great.
The issue looks quite simple: data connection drops (very) often.
No more email push notifications, ...
Have to go to Settings > Network > Airplane mode : switch it on and then witch it off to get data connection back.
It is not an operator issue. My other phone(s) are using the same and data connection works.
Is this a radio rom issue ? Is there a fix ? (didn't find a thing related to that issue).
Anyone having this issue ?
Depends on how strong your network is, I have experienced this a few times.
I keep getting this now that I have had more experience with it, anyone else experiencing random sharp drops in data speed/connection?

Well, I have 4 out of 5 bars... Signal looks strong enough to me.
If I use the same SIM card in a HTC MyTouch 4G slide => Works great, no data connection drops at all !
Looks like it depends on what programs are running and using the data connection:
- email push - connection last long enough.
- when I'm running Bejive (IM) - connection last a bit less (before the 1st drop).
- when I add Skype & LoudTalks : almost every 5 minutes connection drops.
I also noticed that after a voice phone call, sometimes data connection doesn't (cannot) restart by itself ...
Here is an idea :
Is there a way to tweak Operator connection like it can be done with HTC phones : GSM + CDMA, CDMA Only ?
Because when you switch the phone to CDMA only, it uses different frequencies and allow to keep data connections while talking on the phone.
Didn't find that option in Captivate Glide settings ...

I just checked ... I don't have the "Network Mode" option in "Mobile Networks" section.
I have Roaming, allow data connection, APN, ... but not Network mode.
Weird...
I checked the operator info. Nothing out of the ordinary there.
I'm stuck ...and it keeps happening. No solution for now.

Already did that, but that was a few days ago when looking for the WiFi tethering feature ...
I'll flash it back to Rogers kernel & ROM and test.
Update: Flashed Rogers rom.
Good news is I now have the Network settings back. (AT&T rom is not the right one, for sure !)
Data connection last longer. But the issue is still here.
Still investigating...
Anyone else having this issue ?
the day before yesterday, I went to the copier room in my school and stayed for about 2 hours (too many copying). before i get out, i have no signal (mobile network not available). I need to go out to have signal back or reboot.
It happened again yesterday on the exact same location, I'm going to be there again now.
I believe it might be location wise....in my case at least.

I checked, looks like it is not linked to a specific location. I've been travelling and issue kept occuring.
Once data connection is ok, it usually stays up for 2 to 5 minutes, then drops.
"4G" symbol is still displayed - but no more data connection. Web pages not available in browser, no email sync, no more IM, ...
While data connection is down, Cellphone still works, WiFi as well.
It may be linked to an APN issue ... Or definitely a Radio ROM issue.
I'm running Baseband I927RUXKJ5.
Anyone else having this issue ?
When I got the phone the AT&T rep told me there was a known issue with the phone dropping down to lower data speed. He told me if I experienced it to get a new SIM card. Doesn't sound exactly the same but maybe try that?
Hello XDA!
Hopefully im posting in the correct area of help;
Using a i747m factory unlocked - Im having a problem with my radio or carrier with the current ROM (AOKP(Jellybean 4.2.2 )Task650 (2.22.2013).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684&page=1
When it was first installed fresh the signal would be full bar on the LTE network but still had to assign the LTE APN settings for Telus. now - it seems that the signal or similar is glitched? possibly? If i switch to 3G mode my signal is full (-70 or lower) where as when it get too LTE mode, living beside a hotspot i get between -99 and -120 before like i said was all working except data. (LTE was enabled working)
Ive gone through with my providers APN settings and all is correctly setup - Now with this - to connection with applictions are having a problem noticing that data is on the phone - even with Wi-Fi does the applications get numerous errors trying to receive data. It seems too now that seraching for networks will just also close out the options to do so and manually does it connect with a reboot as long as the APN is set.
anyone with ideas?
Edit: time stamps are also inconsistent ; i believe is why the applications are having issues too connect - unable to verify security certificates

Hi guys, now it's time for me to ask a question. In all my years with android I haven't felt so powerless
I'm experiencing a strange behavior with my N5X: I regularly get an error "cellular network not available" when trying to call someone. During that time I'm not able to make calls, receive calls and receive or send sms messages. The strange thing: LTE, H+, H, E or G connections are working during that time.
A reboot fixes the issue for some time, but after some time (minutes or hours) the issue is back. As I said, my whatsapp service and internet connection is available via LTE or similar (depends on the quality of connection), but all GSM services won't work.
I haven't changed the SIM card.
I flashed several different ROMs an kernels.
Thanks
http://imgur.com/a/K0qX2 - here you can see the issue (working H connection but no service)
Update: I removed the SIM card and cleaned it with alcohol, put it back in again and it's working for now.
I have the same problem since a couple of days. I
Will try your trick and report back if it's working.

The issue is back... During a bluetooth connected call in my car, the connection was lost and couldn't be reconnected. "cellular network not available" was shown every time I tried to make a call after that. Internet connection over LTE was fine at the same time...
That's a strange issue. It seems after signal lost it only reconnects data but not cellular.
@Frozen-GPU are you on the newest July update of android? Maybe it is a issue with the radio.

Yes, very strange... I'm on the latest July update with XtraFactory at the moment. However the issue isn't ROM related I think, because I had it with several ROMs and builds since may, if I remember it correctly.
I found some settings in the test-menu *#*#4636#*#* to change for "GSM only" network-mode for example. Maybe that'll fix it.
I switched from LTE/4G to 3G Network in the cellular settings. And the issue doesn't appear till now.
I really think that something in the July update borged it. Before I never had this problem.

I installed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64023143&postcount=10 and switched back to "automatic band select" in *#*#4636#*#* menu. Flashed back to stock and all is working again! Thanks to bitdomo! In the end before I applied the fix, I couldn't get any GSM services anymore. LTE was working. My Nexus 5X was stuck in "USA Band", therefore I wasn't able to fix it without the bitdomo ROM. The bitdomo ROM provides a huge selection of bands, where my stock ROM only showed "USA Band".
I know I'm late to the party, but I was able to fix it by follwing #5 from here: https://www.mytechtipshub.com/mobile-network-not-available-fix-android.html
* Go to the dialer on your phone.
* Dial *#*#4636#*#* from your device.
* A testing menu will appear on the screen.
* In the testing menu, select “Phone Information” from the category.
* You will see an option that says “Run Ping Test.” Select that option on the screen.
* Now scroll down the page where you will find a drop-down menu on the right side.
* Tap it open to see its contents. Click on the option “GSM Auto(PRL).”
* Now further below, you will see an option named “Turn Radio Off.” Select this option.
* Now restart your phone and get rid of the problem for sure.
