Just got my Note 2 last night Awesome device, a bit bigger than my old international One X running CM10, but getting used to size. I rooted it out of the box, man it was the easiest quickest root ever for me. Just installed a stock ROM ( cleanrom ) and simple ICS blue theme to start off, and try out the S-Pen and Touchwiz features. So far so good, running on Straight Talk ATT sim, very fast, great service today so far. .
I have been on stock AOSP Android for years, Nexus-One, Nexus-S, Galaxy Nexus, One X running CM10. I did have the Galaxy S II running a good stock Touchwiz ROM and heavily ICS theme which I liked a lot.
Curious what are you running ? Stock Touchwiz based ROM, or AOSP CM10.1 ROM ? I love AOSP, but are any of the CM10 based ROM's for the ATT Note II good enough as a daily ROM with little bugs ? But AOSP ROM's on the Note II get rid of all the S-Pen features and note writing ? I mean the S-Pen is a big deal on the Note phones, would suck to lose all those features, but then again AOSP is awesome if a good stable and quality ROM.
Of the AOSP ROM's which one for our Note II is the most stable, and offer custom DPI and cool features above and beyond just stock nightly CM10.1 ? And of the stock Touchwiz ROM's which is your favorite, with cool themes and dark apps ? So many to chose from
I am using Nova launcher, and makes the phone look more stock, with cool features, and the 6 x 6 grid fits the Note perfectly. I am shocked actually with Nova on a stock cleanrom, it does feel act very much like stock AOSP.
Thank you
I was on CleanROM SE for a while and everything ran really good. All the stock Sammy features were there.
I just switched over to CM10.1 because I dont use all the SPen features and Samsung stuff so I figured to give it a go. Its pretty stable. Love the stock group messaging. The camcorder volume doesnt work....but there has been a update post today saying it is working now with a reflash of an updated version. That makes google now work and camcorder audio. I havent checked it myself yet. I have NOVA running as my launcher and its nice. If you dont need all the sammy stuff I would say give it a shot. If you need all the Sammy stuff CleanROM SE is awesome.
I really just like not having a ton of Sammy stuff running on the phone that I dont use. My apps in memory went from 1 gig on CleanROM SE to 750 megs on CM10.1. I really like all the stock stuff that CM10.1 has right off the bat. Being able to change all the notification colors, toggles, right swipe down for other toggles on the notification bar. Its not perfect but I dont mind.
Which specific ROM are you running ?

Running this one currently.
[ROM][SGH-I317 / t0lte][JB][4.2.1] CyanogenMod 10.1 official nightlies
Holy cow, battery life after one day is AMAZING
Unplugged for 17 hours now, been using it nonstop, almost 6 hours screen time. Battery @ 33% :good:
yeah Scott's ROM is most excellent. The most I got out of it was 5 1/2 hours screen and just over a day off the charger.
The reasons I switched
1) I like to tinker and have never used a CM ROM
2) I was running the original version of SE and needed to update to 1.2 and in order to do that I had to wipe/factory reset etc so I figured why not try it.
3) I was really digging the stock feel of android....and all the options available directly from stock.
I already have CleanROM SE 1.2 on my external SD because if I go back that will be the one. Great battery life on the stock experience.

Same here, I've had nothing but nexus phones for the past 2 years until I bought the s3, then sold it for the nexus 4. I was one of the few lucky to people to get a order through on the release day. But after having it for a month I realized I do not like lg phones. But yeah I like stock touchwiz. I'm currently running the international ROM because I really like seeing the h+. its a great phone

Tried a couple aosp roms, but keep coming back to tw. Ran lots of aokp roms on my nexus and note 1, so tw is different to me. As cool as cm based roms are, just seems like my old phone.

I had the gsm version of the GN on Tmobile and now i have the CDMA/LTE Version with Verizon and I got to say this is the first phone that I can actually say there is no need for a custom rom. I had the galaxy s, mytouch 4g, htc sensation and on all those phones a custom rom was always a must and that is not the case with this phone. I have tried many custom roms on here both gsm and cdma and I still havent found one that runs any better, faster or smoother then the stock one. Dont get me wrong I appreciate the developers working on this phone but thats just my opinion I wanted to share with everyone specially the people new to this phone. All you need is root and your good to go for a few custom mods and wireless tethering
No phone needs a custom ROM. A lot of people want custom ROMs. Some may want them more than others. You're happy with the stock setup and thats great. Doesn't mean everyone is.
True thats why I said I might be wrong. Just expressing my thoughts about this phone so far
Custom roms ruin phones. Too many issues. I dont care if they make certain parts better; they always cause more issues than it's worth IMO.

I agree. Not that I'm ungrateful to the modders/devs but I don't know how many times I've seen "smooth as butter, no bugs, ultra fast" etc only to have multiple issues with a ROM.
I totally disagree. My Nexus is running much better after rooting and running a custom ROM. And I have absolutely no issues to speak of other than better battery life and a noticeably faster phone.

Could you provide a link? Thank you.
Many people get a development-friendly Google Experience phone such as this for the express purpose of using custom ROMs. Many others just want a straight Android phone with no TouchWiz/Sense/Blur on it and that gets timely software updates. To each his own (though I like to push the boundaries of Android's potential and try various ROM/kernel/mod/theme combinations). Yes, custom ROMs often have bugs in them (our devs often work alone or with small teams for free and squeeze dev work between job and family life - besides, even stock has bugs, and Google has legions of coders and testers). In addition to some bugs, though, they usually offer performance, features, and eye candy not available on stock.
Has anyone seen John Connor?
this is what I'm on all stock rooted and clockwork recovery. battery life is great and I don't have the problems that some people have experienced with google apps and with the market not restoring etc. and like I said I have tried custom roms on both the GSM and CDMA/LTE Galaxy Nexus. just sharing my experience on both phone also to add Verizons Network runs 2-3 times faster then Tmobile's Network in Los Angeles.

i have to agree. i am rooted but find no rom got my interest. maybe cm9, but it's not stable yet.
my main reason to root my phones have always been to remove all the sh!t that verizon puts in their phones, so with this one being 90% crapware free,i feel no need to root it.
A ROM may not be necessary, but a new launcher for sure. Nova launcher allows enough customization to do most things.
Roman just released a "milestone" ROM version of aokp that's solid and ships with stock kernel. His drop down toggles are the best.
Its my daily driver now for sure. I hit it hard flashing since I bought this phone, but need to take a break and this ROM is it for me. And I'm sticking with stock kernel just to keep GTA 3 working
Not sure if this has been asked yet but is this a possibility on an AOSP-based device? There are some great looking features from TouchWiz 4.0 that I would love to see on the Galaxy Nexus. Any developers have commentary about this as a possibility (especially now that there's an ICS-based Galaxy SII ROM floating around)?
EDIT: Seems there is already some work going on over at Rootzwiki - Link
Note Regarding the Poll: I think it's more than obvious that the majority of people here dislike any 3rd party UI (be it Sense, TouchWiz, Motoblur, etc...). So consider it more of a statistic of how many people are actually interested (ie. only pay attention to the number in Option 1, Option 2 is really just there for people who like nothing but stock).
I think most developers go out of their way to remove this..

FYI comparing TouchWiz to Sense is like comparing Cherry and Chocolate. And FWIW, personally I like Sense but we all know that either way it's extremely difficult to bring a Sense port to an AOSP-based device. However with TouchWiz who knows.
I would say bring the Touchwiz Icons and just stop there. It's a nice set of fluid and nicely themed icons. I did it on my Droid Charge. I had a full AOSP rom and launcher but I just swapped the PNG's of the icons on everything for Touchwiz icons. It looked good. Here's some pics.

I always hated Touchwiz BECAUSE of the icons. On my Vibrant, every app icon was encased in a big ugly box of a solid color. Looked way too iPhone-ish and cartoony and ugly. No thanks
One thing I liked about TW over Stock is that Samsung at least makes an attempt to make everything part of a same theme package where Google just throws icons together with no effort whatsoever.
TouchWiz?! Ahhhh, kill it with fire!
If I wanted TouchWiz I'd get a Galaxy S II.
I say port it. I'm not a fan of any OEM skins, but the more choices we have on this device the better. It will just open up more and more opportunities.
People with touchwiz complaint about it and root to get rid of it, people beg for a nexus phone because is AOSP, now that they have a clean looking android phone, they want touchwiz and sh!t, never happy.
Never having a touchwiz device, I do know the basics of the launcher from a friends galaxy. Kinds feels like Go Launcher and nice themes and widgets.
There was a touchwiz CM7 theme that I liked because of the battery icon and color scheme.
Like said, you don't really need touchwiz to get all the functionality of it today. Just icons, go launcher, and beautiful Widgets.

I'm happy to see some positive feedback. Let's convince those developers.
Please never let this happen. 3rd party skins have only hurt Android since 2.0.
ICS will only get better why ruin it with touchwiz and any other skin for that effect.

Why it has to be "ruin"? Why not combine the best of both?
Hey guys just wondering what your favorite roms are? I'm just looking to try out some roms, I need something as my daily. Tried Aokp, but Ics isn't stable enough. Went to a sense Rom, and I love the sense widgets and camera, but I don't like anything else about it.
So I'm searching for a Rom.
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
For sense I like MikRunny (running it now) but for ASOP stuff I have just run CM7 & CM9 with different launchers to customize it.
Sent from iPhone rehab device.
Skyraider Zeus is a good sense rom. Its virtually bug free and has quite a few themes and mods for it. Its my go to rom when I need it.
I'm not a huge fan of aosp... but condemned souls cm7 v1.5 rc3 is pretty slick. Also miui is a good aosp rom too... the last stable build is 12/9.
If your feeling adventurous give nituj17 ultimatekangbang a shot. Its sense 4 (ics). It has come along way! Nits did a stellar job with it! Its got a few bugs but nothing too major... the biggest being the stock camera. But... a free camera app will fire right up. Problem solved.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk 2
Stock camera working just fine here on ukb. Just set to 5MP
I also require a stable, daily use ROM for my job. Not a big fan of sense, if you're the same way check out cm7.2.
It's based on Gingerbread 2.3.7 and just got a fresh new round of updates. They brought in some ICS code and it's as stable and functional as ever.
Condemned Soul just updated his kang with the latest CM7.2-RC3. Slap the ICS theme on it from the market and it's a beautiful ROM

I run with CM 7.2 personally...
This phone offers so many good roms. Coming to this phone CM7 was my favorite rom. But after having the phone for a while and trying a lot of different roms. Here is a list of my favorites.w
#1 sense 4a Nitsuj did a great job it is so sweet and i know even better things are on the way.
#2 sense 5.01 w/4ext. Very solid and everything works perfect.
#3 CM7 another great rom where everything works and a lot of customization.
Nit's ultimate kang bang is great and really stable since he added the leaked Chinese kernal. I have had it as a daily driver for about 4 days and had 0 probs. Cam works and its awesome. If you dont like sense, you can always add a custom launcher. I'm running launcher 7 right now, but that will probably change in a few days anyway. But I have a problem, and I'm getting counseling.

Sense 4a is awesome and even better things are coming. I have been running it since the moment it dropped. Loving it!
Looks good Nick.
For Sense 3.5, I take Magnolia 2.1.1 final because it feels extremely smooth and awesome!!!! It has some minor slowdowns, but this always happens in Sense 3.5.
Sense 4, my favorite is nit's ultimatekangbang from because it is awesome!!!! He's really dine a spectacular job and came a long way since his opensense days.
Finally, AOSP goes with CM9 5-30 build all the way!!! Its stable to the point where its become my DD every day. If you can overlook the small touch issues here and there and a semi stable camera, then CM9 is the way to go.
Haven't looked at CM7 for a while, but definitely go for that if you're a newbie with Android roms.

Try nit's UKB 3.01 or Relays newest ROM, all around great stuff by awesome Devs
Edit:
Stay away from Relay's Rom that runs 3.6sense it will bork you phone. Needs to be ported over by devs to work correctly if that's even possible
Gotta say nits ukb sense 4a! Not many issues. I am loving the way you rock launcher 7 with it looks awesome. Anyways aeros cm9 with his kernal is great! If it all flops cm7.2 and customize like crazy!

Thanks for all the replies guys! Wonderful community, and it looks like there are some roms I need to try.
Just a quick question, maybe it is just me but is sense slower than aosp?
But you guys have all convinced me to give nits sense rom a try.
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
Although it's older, SkyRaider Zeus 1.3 with Andy's ICS theme is pretty cool, super stable and fast.
I've been playing with CM7 lately. Very fast, and excellent battery life.
CM9 is awesome but has camera issues, and with a 15-month-old, I need a working cam.
I just flashed nit's TSM UKB.....so far, it's super sweet. I haven't put much time in yet. Nit is all over this, so even if there are issues, chances are they'll be handled promptly.
Tried MikRunny roms. They're good. It's really up to what your preferences are.
Ultimately, I'm having a hard time sticking to one. I think I'm addicted to flashing.

From my experience, sometimes. But often they can be more stable depending on the build. AOSP tends to use less battery. The file sizes are much smaller: @ 90M v. sense roms @ 300M
Favorite ROMs
I like Nitsuj17's Sense 4a Kang Bang... or Dinc2 HD.
I had been using virtuous unity 2.39 for a long time, and liked it. I would try CM7 occasionally but couldn't get it working how it should so would switch back.
Just switched to Nit's ukb sense 4a and I love it! I think I'll be staying with this!
I have bounce around among CM7, most of the ICS builds and just went to Nitsuj17's Sense 4a Kang Bang and it is amazing everything works well for me. The ICS killer for me in the past has been the stock camera flash, but now with that working this will be my ROM until the official ICS for the Inc 2 comes out.

Me too. First Rom I flashed was cm7. After that I went straight to cm9 and aokp builds. I really liked Evans cm9.... But this is my digital camera...so when I flashed Justin's kangbang Rom I fell in love. The good parts of sense without all the bloat and a camera that works. Justin is an awesome dev and seems to always be cooking something up with this Rom.

The criteria for my favourite ROM is the build where everything is 100% functional. The problem is I would rather use aosp as sense slows down any phone but it is flawless as far as the little things

I'm from the vzw note2, but have a friend getting the sprint variant. I use jelly beans b11, was wondering what a good TW based ROM along the same lines for sprint was? Been looking at Jelly Bomb (think it's TW), but can't really test any out until he gets the phone. Not looking to do a whole lot of flashing, just one solid run through for him to get started. Any input appreciated, maybe some key points to a few, or just personal opinions on what you use and why would be great. Thanks guys, in advance.

Cool, thanks. Yeah, you guys have a couple of things that our roms add because VZW decided we didn't need it (wtf, right). I love Beans, but mostly because of the aosp features and themes, as well as the options and debloat. When he was talking about getting it I didn't even consider the fact that beans wasn't on the sprint variant, heh. I'll take it into consideration, and keep reading around until the phone arrives, still open to suggestions and opinions though.

All of these are Great options, to be certain. (you can't actually go wrong with any of our devs.)
But my fave, for several reason is Platts Synergy.
Stock looks, well maintained and up-to-date by a very experienced team of cookers, practically bugless, all the little tweaks and features you want in a custom cooked ROM, w/o any "experimental" things to worry about. Rock F**king Solid.
also, I have to admit as a disclosure, I hate "theming". not to knock anybodys anything, but it's what keeps me away from 75% of ROMs.
If you like themed ROMs, JellyBomb has a ton of views for good reason.

I had never seen so many people against theming as I have here. It's really the only reason I have a stock themed base (with the exception on 1% bat, pulldown, and got that yellow date on the lockscreen changed to white). Otherwise my base would be like green. On the ET most people wanted themes.
And btw jelly bomb was one of the first roms and the only heavily themed rom for awhile. Just saying, views aren't the only thing to base off of. I have seen a lot of people who had jb banners when they first flagged Lab Rats.... its all personal preference. If you want blue, then jb beats all. But LR has green, goodness, pink, orange, and soon to be purple while also featuring a stock base.
check out our rom website, http://updater.team-nocturnal.com/labrats/
He loves the ICS Blue look of my phone (dialer, center clock, toggles, basically anything status bar related) said he wants that. Final decision is his but I can sway him with my knowledge, and know how of what means/does what. Definitely checking these out when I get to my computer, especially Synergy and LR. You guys have a plethora of roms, it's daunting. VZW development is catching up, we recently got Whomp and had Jedi for a little while now too. Still, i look through feature lists and see a couple things I'm going to suggest to Beans. Just released build 12 day before yesterday, got Xposed, Pie integration, couple other things. Rounding out quite nice. Thanks for all the suggestions guys, quite the help always good to see (instead of "search!"). I mean I'm looking around just a lot to look at and always good to see opinions.
To the mod: realized too late I posted in the wrong forum, sorry! I know better, too! Spent a few minutes looking in general when it clicked.
Also, I love ICS Blue (any theming in general, always sets us apart). When we had GB, I was all over green themes. Another guy at work has a sprint N2 he won't let me root (wuss, he'll cave after I hook up this one) and this prospective buyer loves the look of mine well over his stock. Thanks again guys, you're great!
Current:
VZW GNll running B10, 6,200MAh Hyperion with a Dremel'd box of otters & iPad 2
Graveyard: Droid - Droid 3 - T-Mo G2X - iPhone 4S
Tell us why you still have your GS3 and why you love it?
I love mine bc for the last 2 years I have beat the crap out of it, with installing Roms, mods, updates, tweaks, and everything I threw at it, and it's still ticking! Great piece of equipment.

I actually feel the same way. I had the itch for a new phone a few weeks back, have played with a Moto X etc.; don't get me wrong there's a lot of really nice, fast phones out there, but after the 4.4.2 update, debloating, and putting some ktoonsez kernel action on my phone, it really flies. I'm not certain a new device would really add that much value to what I already have.
No complaints whatsoever, still performs like a new device. Camera is still solid. Battery gets me through the day (I can usually eke out ~2h of screen-on time and have just under 50% battery left, and this is with the original stock battery than came with the phone).
All around a great device.

Same here. I'm up for an upgrade but I'm totally happy with the S3. It does everything I want in a phone. Great battery life. The camera is superb. All the apps I want run with no issues. Couldn't be happier with it.
totally agree.
i love my galaxy s3 cause well i just got it honestly and its a very good phone (coming from a person that was in love with the Infuse 4g) well there's a lot more things i can do to this phone and i have done quite a few just love the fact that i get 4.4.2 KK TW stock rom on this phone the infuse was left behind at 2.3.6 GB and only taste of KK roms were AOSP......so i just love my Boost S3
Oh yeah here's how I have my home screen stock 4.4.2 ND8 with the NDC modem and S5 launcher and theme engine that came with the launcher from Wicked X Rom with the Sense 5 or 6 theme and the Blue Balls live wallpaper from CarbonRom
The gs3 was still the top smartphone at the time I bought it, and even 2 years and 2 generations later, i still think it's the top galaxy device. The s3 and s4 vary so slightly that when i updated my rom and debloated it i felt like i had the s4 pretty much. And with the difficulty in just rooting the s5 and the fact that it has a locked bootloader, i am still in no way jealous of any s5 owner (although the dev version is pretty cool). Despite all that, I've also thrown so much software at my device and it still runs great.

My kids have the s5 and n5 and I still love my s3. The n5 is nice but my phone is better than that. I have thrown every tw rom and aosp rom at it in the last almost 3 years and its still awesome. Especially since xPosed was introduced. I'm running SlimKat 6.4 and will stay w SlimKat. I also have a backup s3 who's power button broke on my son. I got him the s5, which is very pretty Btw, and I fixed the power button. Also on SlimKat. Works like new. Ill keep it if mine f's up.

I could upgrade, but still can't get over the whole no data while on the phone issue that all the new phones have. Not willing to take a step backwards when my S3 still works so well.
No reason to upgrade whatsoever... the S3 is smooth as butter on SlimKat. Plus I don't want a 5"+ inch phone. The devs have supported this device very, very well. I upgraded from the Epic years ago, which is still well supported.

Couldn't agree more! I can upgrade also (LG G3) would be my choice. Our S3 is the last good phone to offer 3G SVDO and SVLTE. Guess I'll have to wait for atleast VOLTE to deploy before upgrading ...Im still sporting a WICKED SENSATION knox FREE, MD4 bootloader S3!!.
I dont think ANY new phone will support 3G SVDO in the near future, do you all agree?
SVDO

nobody will support SVDO because data demand and im still running MD4 bootloader and ive beat the hell out of my s3.No KNOX,MD4,and I can run any modem, bootloader and no ND8
I'm with all of you. I had stock AOSP, CM, PA, PACMAN, Slim, Carbon, Vanir, etc...
I'm just settling on Conquest TW rom. Always had issues with reception and GPS on AOSP roms. Conquest is the best of both worlds.
