I Might Be Wrong But I Think This Phone Does Not Need Custom Roms - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I had the gsm version of the GN on Tmobile and now i have the CDMA/LTE Version with Verizon and I got to say this is the first phone that I can actually say there is no need for a custom rom. I had the galaxy s, mytouch 4g, htc sensation and on all those phones a custom rom was always a must and that is not the case with this phone. I have tried many custom roms on here both gsm and cdma and I still havent found one that runs any better, faster or smoother then the stock one. Dont get me wrong I appreciate the developers working on this phone but thats just my opinion I wanted to share with everyone specially the people new to this phone. All you need is root and your good to go for a few custom mods and wireless tethering

No phone needs a custom ROM. A lot of people want custom ROMs. Some may want them more than others. You're happy with the stock setup and thats great. Doesn't mean everyone is.

True thats why I said I might be wrong. Just expressing my thoughts about this phone so far

Custom roms ruin phones. Too many issues. I dont care if they make certain parts better; they always cause more issues than it's worth IMO.

I agree. I am running 4.0.3 but it's stock.

If they would have thru in wifi tether i might agree with you. Anyone find a web browser that makes full screen movies yet? Dolphin needs to update. Please?

I agree. Not that I'm ungrateful to the modders/devs but I don't know how many times I've seen "smooth as butter, no bugs, ultra fast" etc only to have multiple issues with a ROM.

I totally disagree. My Nexus is running much better after rooting and running a custom ROM. And I have absolutely no issues to speak of other than better battery life and a noticeably faster phone.

I feel the same way.
I'm on AOKP build X1 with Leankernel 1.1.0. Custom voltages as well.

I'm on the fence about this, might give a custom from a try soon. Think I'll stick with the stock kernel for a while though.

Could you provide a link? Thank you.

Many people get a development-friendly Google Experience phone such as this for the express purpose of using custom ROMs. Many others just want a straight Android phone with no TouchWiz/Sense/Blur on it and that gets timely software updates. To each his own (though I like to push the boundaries of Android's potential and try various ROM/kernel/mod/theme combinations). Yes, custom ROMs often have bugs in them (our devs often work alone or with small teams for free and squeeze dev work between job and family life - besides, even stock has bugs, and Google has legions of coders and testers). In addition to some bugs, though, they usually offer performance, features, and eye candy not available on stock.
Has anyone seen John Connor?

this is what I'm on all stock rooted and clockwork recovery. battery life is great and I don't have the problems that some people have experienced with google apps and with the market not restoring etc. and like I said I have tried custom roms on both the GSM and CDMA/LTE Galaxy Nexus. just sharing my experience on both phone also to add Verizons Network runs 2-3 times faster then Tmobile's Network in Los Angeles.

i have to agree. i am rooted but find no rom got my interest. maybe cm9, but it's not stable yet.

my main reason to root my phones have always been to remove all the sh!t that verizon puts in their phones, so with this one being 90% crapware free,i feel no need to root it.

A ROM may not be necessary, but a new launcher for sure. Nova launcher allows enough customization to do most things.
Roman just released a "milestone" ROM version of aokp that's solid and ships with stock kernel. His drop down toggles are the best.
Its my daily driver now for sure. I hit it hard flashing since I bought this phone, but need to take a break and this ROM is it for me. And I'm sticking with stock kernel just to keep GTA 3 working

Best ROM for a mother that loves the stock phone?

Has complete stock functionality but subtlety fixes any bugs that would be obvious to the casual user.
My mother's GS2 definitely needs some finishing touches that Samsung couldn't crank out.
Can somebody point me to the best stock-ish ROM in this forum?
Thanks to the people who make good suggestions.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I would say Calkulins rom. Has the stock look and feel but is superior in every category when it comes to the stock rom. I feel it's how the phone should come stock.
I would suggest a stock 2.6 ROM, SpeedMod kernel and Jkays Deluxe.
Also check out CheckROM if you really wanna go down the route of a new ROM

please do NOT do any of that. you will probably brick the phone. use calks. its really good and pretty much a stock feel. 2.8.1 is the one u want. the guy above me was suggesting a rom not for the epic. remember just because its an S2 doesn't mean we can flash their roms. stay in our dev section or the phone will likely be done for good.
Your going to get alot of different opinions on this topic, but I am going with Calkulin's on this one.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Premium App
hopefully me chiming in will make your choice easier. I went with Caulkins rom too for my wife. She likes the stock feel and it has that and like everyone else said its superior to stock. I upgraded my modem to el29 which has been the best for me. also if you have gps issues flash the gps driver.
One more vote for Calkulin's Rom. Stock looking with great battery life because of the battery scripts it runs. You don't need to know anything about the scripts, they just run in the background. There are also some really great themes available if she wants to make it pretty. Try flashing different modems until you find the best one. Personally I've had the best luck with EL26 but everyone's results are different.
For a stock look I'd say Calks as well. Or you could just root her phone, add Titanium Backup and add and subtract from the stock rom itself........
Yup flash Calkulin and your done. Don't bother with any weird combinations.

Holy hell guys, thanks for the quick response. Now I just have to convince my mom to let me get my hands on that phone of hers! Haha, thanks again.
I'll vote just root what she has and make simple mods. If you do any type of custom rom, anything that goes wrong, you'll have to be her tech support because she'll blame whatever you installed as the issue, true or not.
Same here. Stock + rooted.

I agree Calkulins is the best on here if your looking for something close to stock that has speed and performance
Calkulin's, without a doubt. Put the EL13 modem on it though

this is what I did for my wife when she first got the phone. Stock EK02, only rooted. I disabled CIQ, used titanium backup to freeze sprint bloatware, and disabled DRM.
I think for the EL29 update, i'll just flash Caulk's ROM (like what everyone is suggesting) so at least she'll have the battery scripts, modded camera app, 5 dock icons, bloatware removed, and little tweaks like that. I would just use titanium back up to make periodic backups to her external SD card.
My vote (which probably doesn't mean very much as a noob but I just like to be different) goes to BlazerROM. I love the theme and she shouldn't feel particularly lost coming from the stock ROM. I'm running it currently and it's been very good to me.

I get about 3 days out of my battery before the meter hits 30% with moderate use (checking facebook a few times a day, Words With Friends, Music player for short trips in the car, etc.) which I think is pretty good considering I always have WiFi on at home (turn it off while travelling unless I know there's a hotspot around). I am extremely anal about killing processes when I'm done with them though, so a casual user may not see the same results.
*E* P.S. if she likes to shop then Google Goggles would probably blow her mind.

Bored... Your thoughts?

Im running CM9, Came from an N1 (which i still think is a great phone). Anyhow, I do like ICS I think the GNex is nice device, but its somewhat boring stock, and not much better than that with CM9...
Im not sure if CM is just falling by the wayside, but the CM7 software on my N1 had sooo much more to tinker with (they really made android come alive)
What does everyone else think? Any nice ROMs I should be flashing that are more advanced in development?

And I know for a fact that AOKP had ROM Control first with a lot of these settings. Not calling them out or anything but a lot of ROMs share features (kanging source).

Try MIUI. Try the different ports from Xperia's to Sense 4.0 (although most of them aren't stable enough for daily use they can be played with for a day and is quite interesting.)
I think its just that back in the day Android, and the carrier customizations were so crappy that you absolutely needed to tinker with the phone to get it to work right.
I'm finding I'm bored too with ICS. It's because I don't need to do anything to it. Its like tinkering with the settings page of Gmail. "this is... good."
My thoughts? I think you should get a girlfriend… and spend less time with your phone.
AOKP has an incredible amount of tweaks.
Sounds like you need to flash a buggy ROM or two son.
Yeah doesn't aokp have a huge jump on cm9 with features? You really should try aokp. Cm9 needs more dev time.

Some might call that bloat.
I am using AOKP for fast featured tweaks/mods and stable rom. I'll eventually jump back to cyanogen, after they reached RC1. Or maybe AOKP for Gnex, CM9 for sgs2. But oh well, after using AOKP, i tend to stay with it a long time without trying other roms. Its the best for now.

So far the worthwhile roms are touched by gs3, aokp and cm9.....cm10 now lol but that is laggy maybe its my phone who knows

Just curious if the attached image is about what I should be expecting in terms of battery life. The screen seems to draw a lot more than I'm used to (then again this is my first experience with AMOLED screens).
Also, for those who have rooted and installed cm or a similar custom ROM, would I see a significant difference if I went beyond the stock firmware?

To find your actual screen on time: go to the screen you were at when u took screenshot, and then tap where it says "Screen".
It will bring another screen up with information about how much total time the screen was on.
The galaxy nexus(especially toro due to its LTE/CDMA radio combo which is also very draining on battery) is not going to ever give you stellar battery life. I HIGHLY recommend grabbing yourself an extra battery (or two lol) to carry around like I do. They are small enough to throw an extra in ya pocket or wallet when you go out. And will give you much peace of mind in knowing that you have a full backup battery with ya.(also, at this point these batteries even OEM Samsung ones are VERY cheap. Even the OEM extended battery.(2100mah))
I will also go ahead and recommend grabbing yourself an external charger.(If you want, I can link you to the one I purchased long ago, it is official Samsung one, came with an extended Gnex battery and charging cable. And can ALSO be used as a stand for device, I also used to use it as a perfect little stand for my nexus 7 tablet.
I personally have 3 batteries(1extended OEM, 2 regular OEM, I USED to have ANTHER extended OEM one but I dropped it in a puddle lolol) and they are well worth the money especially beings as now they will be even cheaper than when I got em.
Let me know if you'd like the link to the Samsung external charger/battery combo I got.
ALSO:
WELCOME to the forums! Just remember posts like this should go in the Q/A or General section, development sections new thread posts are for ROM/kernel/development topics don't be discouraged if your post gets moved
You MIGHT want to try a custom kernel to see if you get better battery life(and probably performance also! Bonus!) you can use kernels from the Galaxy Nexus Android Development section. You do not have to use only the ones found in the VZW Gnex forum. But for a ROM, make sure to ONLY use the ones from the Verizon Wireless Gnex section. Kernels will work on any variant, ROMs are NOT interchangeable (you will prolly end up having to flash stock factory img thru fastboot or toolkit if u flash wrong ROM variant. But that isn't so bad, very easy)
Sorry for such the long reply, just trying to make your transition to the Gnex world easier hopefully

No worries, I think it could be Tapatalk anyways, cuz now Tapatalk is showing TWO of this thread here and one is showing all kinds of </br > junk in it. It acts up sometimes(gotta love how I paid for the first Tapatalk paid app, which is now free and ad supported I yhink, AND I purchased this Tapatalk HD/pro(?) Whatever they wanna call it now, ONLY cuz I figured okay maybe all the updates won't constantly break functionality like they did on previous app since they overhauled a lot of it. But yea....I mean it works good MOST of the time but they only JUST fixed the INSANE lag from large posts that have a lot of thanks(see v6superharger thread as example, used to be gawd awful scrolling the first post...prolly still is lmao... Just wish mobile browsing wasn't so horrid most of time or another COMPETING app to push development to be better. Though I'm sure its tough to try and get these apps nearly prefect with ALL the constantly changing forums they support and such....BUT...that's an AshRants for another day...lmao sorry I ramble a lot.)
Even tho battery life for toro(vzw gnex) really leaves something to be desired, the device is EASILY one of the funnest to own and tinker with. SO MANY CHOICES makes finding "that prefect setup" a LOT of fun. And the kernels available are just stellar.(I highly recommend one of the most active as of late either DirtyV(by @bsmitty83 I use his smittyV builds personally), Fancy(by @boype ) or HybridRemix( by @Pattyboi I think I spelled his name right..he has taken over maintaining and pushing updates to the stellar ASKP kernel with his own tweaks added in) things have never been dull in development for Galaxy Nexus but have also just recently gotten pretty exciting for users and devs alike. And the community (as you can probably already tell) has become one of the friendliest around. And there is TONS of info all over in here. Lap it all up, and have fun!

I love my GS3

Tell us why you still have your GS3 and why you love it?
I love mine bc for the last 2 years I have beat the crap out of it, with installing Roms, mods, updates, tweaks, and everything I threw at it, and it's still ticking! Great piece of equipment.

I actually feel the same way. I had the itch for a new phone a few weeks back, have played with a Moto X etc.; don't get me wrong there's a lot of really nice, fast phones out there, but after the 4.4.2 update, debloating, and putting some ktoonsez kernel action on my phone, it really flies. I'm not certain a new device would really add that much value to what I already have.
No complaints whatsoever, still performs like a new device. Camera is still solid. Battery gets me through the day (I can usually eke out ~2h of screen-on time and have just under 50% battery left, and this is with the original stock battery than came with the phone).
All around a great device.

Same here. I'm up for an upgrade but I'm totally happy with the S3. It does everything I want in a phone. Great battery life. The camera is superb. All the apps I want run with no issues. Couldn't be happier with it.
totally agree.
i love my galaxy s3 cause well i just got it honestly and its a very good phone (coming from a person that was in love with the Infuse 4g) well there's a lot more things i can do to this phone and i have done quite a few just love the fact that i get 4.4.2 KK TW stock rom on this phone the infuse was left behind at 2.3.6 GB and only taste of KK roms were AOSP......so i just love my Boost S3
Oh yeah here's how I have my home screen stock 4.4.2 ND8 with the NDC modem and S5 launcher and theme engine that came with the launcher from Wicked X Rom with the Sense 5 or 6 theme and the Blue Balls live wallpaper from CarbonRom
The gs3 was still the top smartphone at the time I bought it, and even 2 years and 2 generations later, i still think it's the top galaxy device. The s3 and s4 vary so slightly that when i updated my rom and debloated it i felt like i had the s4 pretty much. And with the difficulty in just rooting the s5 and the fact that it has a locked bootloader, i am still in no way jealous of any s5 owner (although the dev version is pretty cool). Despite all that, I've also thrown so much software at my device and it still runs great.

My kids have the s5 and n5 and I still love my s3. The n5 is nice but my phone is better than that. I have thrown every tw rom and aosp rom at it in the last almost 3 years and its still awesome. Especially since xPosed was introduced. I'm running SlimKat 6.4 and will stay w SlimKat. I also have a backup s3 who's power button broke on my son. I got him the s5, which is very pretty Btw, and I fixed the power button. Also on SlimKat. Works like new. Ill keep it if mine f's up.

I could upgrade, but still can't get over the whole no data while on the phone issue that all the new phones have. Not willing to take a step backwards when my S3 still works so well.
No reason to upgrade whatsoever... the S3 is smooth as butter on SlimKat. Plus I don't want a 5"+ inch phone. The devs have supported this device very, very well. I upgraded from the Epic years ago, which is still well supported.

Couldn't agree more! I can upgrade also (LG G3) would be my choice. Our S3 is the last good phone to offer 3G SVDO and SVLTE. Guess I'll have to wait for atleast VOLTE to deploy before upgrading ...Im still sporting a WICKED SENSATION knox FREE, MD4 bootloader S3!!.
I dont think ANY new phone will support 3G SVDO in the near future, do you all agree?
SVDO

nobody will support SVDO because data demand and im still running MD4 bootloader and ive beat the hell out of my s3.No KNOX,MD4,and I can run any modem, bootloader and no ND8
I'm with all of you. I had stock AOSP, CM, PA, PACMAN, Slim, Carbon, Vanir, etc...
I'm just settling on Conquest TW rom. Always had issues with reception and GPS on AOSP roms. Conquest is the best of both worlds.
