Has complete stock functionality but subtlety fixes any bugs that would be obvious to the casual user.
My mother's GS2 definitely needs some finishing touches that Samsung couldn't crank out.
Can somebody point me to the best stock-ish ROM in this forum?
Thanks to the people who make good suggestions.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I would say Calkulins rom. Has the stock look and feel but is superior in every category when it comes to the stock rom. I feel it's how the phone should come stock.
I would suggest a stock 2.6 ROM, SpeedMod kernel and Jkays Deluxe.
Also check out CheckROM if you really wanna go down the route of a new ROM

please do NOT do any of that. you will probably brick the phone. use calks. its really good and pretty much a stock feel. 2.8.1 is the one u want. the guy above me was suggesting a rom not for the epic. remember just because its an S2 doesn't mean we can flash their roms. stay in our dev section or the phone will likely be done for good.
Your going to get alot of different opinions on this topic, but I am going with Calkulin's on this one.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Premium App
hopefully me chiming in will make your choice easier. I went with Caulkins rom too for my wife. She likes the stock feel and it has that and like everyone else said its superior to stock. I upgraded my modem to el29 which has been the best for me. also if you have gps issues flash the gps driver.
One more vote for Calkulin's Rom. Stock looking with great battery life because of the battery scripts it runs. You don't need to know anything about the scripts, they just run in the background. There are also some really great themes available if she wants to make it pretty. Try flashing different modems until you find the best one. Personally I've had the best luck with EL26 but everyone's results are different.
For a stock look I'd say Calks as well. Or you could just root her phone, add Titanium Backup and add and subtract from the stock rom itself........
Yup flash Calkulin and your done. Don't bother with any weird combinations.
I guess you got your answer yeah?

Just in case, go with Calkulin
Holy hell guys, thanks for the quick response. Now I just have to convince my mom to let me get my hands on that phone of hers! Haha, thanks again.
I'll vote just root what she has and make simple mods. If you do any type of custom rom, anything that goes wrong, you'll have to be her tech support because she'll blame whatever you installed as the issue, true or not.
Same here. Stock + rooted.

I agree Calkulins is the best on here if your looking for something close to stock that has speed and performance
Calkulin's, without a doubt. Put the EL13 modem on it though

this is what I did for my wife when she first got the phone. Stock EK02, only rooted. I disabled CIQ, used titanium backup to freeze sprint bloatware, and disabled DRM.
I think for the EL29 update, i'll just flash Caulk's ROM (like what everyone is suggesting) so at least she'll have the battery scripts, modded camera app, 5 dock icons, bloatware removed, and little tweaks like that. I would just use titanium back up to make periodic backups to her external SD card.
My vote (which probably doesn't mean very much as a noob but I just like to be different) goes to BlazerROM. I love the theme and she shouldn't feel particularly lost coming from the stock ROM. I'm running it currently and it's been very good to me.

I get about 3 days out of my battery before the meter hits 30% with moderate use (checking facebook a few times a day, Words With Friends, Music player for short trips in the car, etc.) which I think is pretty good considering I always have WiFi on at home (turn it off while travelling unless I know there's a hotspot around). I am extremely anal about killing processes when I'm done with them though, so a casual user may not see the same results.
*E* P.S. if she likes to shop then Google Goggles would probably blow her mind.

I had the gsm version of the GN on Tmobile and now i have the CDMA/LTE Version with Verizon and I got to say this is the first phone that I can actually say there is no need for a custom rom. I had the galaxy s, mytouch 4g, htc sensation and on all those phones a custom rom was always a must and that is not the case with this phone. I have tried many custom roms on here both gsm and cdma and I still havent found one that runs any better, faster or smoother then the stock one. Dont get me wrong I appreciate the developers working on this phone but thats just my opinion I wanted to share with everyone specially the people new to this phone. All you need is root and your good to go for a few custom mods and wireless tethering
No phone needs a custom ROM. A lot of people want custom ROMs. Some may want them more than others. You're happy with the stock setup and thats great. Doesn't mean everyone is.
True thats why I said I might be wrong. Just expressing my thoughts about this phone so far
Custom roms ruin phones. Too many issues. I dont care if they make certain parts better; they always cause more issues than it's worth IMO.

I agree. Not that I'm ungrateful to the modders/devs but I don't know how many times I've seen "smooth as butter, no bugs, ultra fast" etc only to have multiple issues with a ROM.
I totally disagree. My Nexus is running much better after rooting and running a custom ROM. And I have absolutely no issues to speak of other than better battery life and a noticeably faster phone.

Could you provide a link? Thank you.
Many people get a development-friendly Google Experience phone such as this for the express purpose of using custom ROMs. Many others just want a straight Android phone with no TouchWiz/Sense/Blur on it and that gets timely software updates. To each his own (though I like to push the boundaries of Android's potential and try various ROM/kernel/mod/theme combinations). Yes, custom ROMs often have bugs in them (our devs often work alone or with small teams for free and squeeze dev work between job and family life - besides, even stock has bugs, and Google has legions of coders and testers). In addition to some bugs, though, they usually offer performance, features, and eye candy not available on stock.
Has anyone seen John Connor?
this is what I'm on all stock rooted and clockwork recovery. battery life is great and I don't have the problems that some people have experienced with google apps and with the market not restoring etc. and like I said I have tried custom roms on both the GSM and CDMA/LTE Galaxy Nexus. just sharing my experience on both phone also to add Verizons Network runs 2-3 times faster then Tmobile's Network in Los Angeles.

i have to agree. i am rooted but find no rom got my interest. maybe cm9, but it's not stable yet.
my main reason to root my phones have always been to remove all the sh!t that verizon puts in their phones, so with this one being 90% crapware free,i feel no need to root it.
A ROM may not be necessary, but a new launcher for sure. Nova launcher allows enough customization to do most things.
Roman just released a "milestone" ROM version of aokp that's solid and ships with stock kernel. His drop down toggles are the best.
Its my daily driver now for sure. I hit it hard flashing since I bought this phone, but need to take a break and this ROM is it for me. And I'm sticking with stock kernel just to keep GTA 3 working
The rom selection is not very good and the roms themselves are full of issues save for the gb ones.
Wtf are u talking about? We have a few JB roms out. we have as much dev support as any phone on XDA!!!!
Have u tried blu kuban its amazing. The cm9 is almost a daily what the f#@k else do u want for the devs to suck u off too!!!!!!!

Also we have a huge assortment of roms. We have atleast 7 roms active being updated daily . So far the worthwhile roms are touched by gs3, aokp and cm9.....cm10 now lol but that is laggy maybe its my phone who knows
The other two are well on the way to being amazing just need stability responsiveness and MHL ability
Also why isnt the CM9 for our phone official? ATT version is.....

Well I've flashed a lot of roms since I got my S3 and this is what I'd recommend if your looking for Stability/Performance/Battery:
Stock TW ICS Roms:
- Wanam Lite Rom
- FreeGS3 R6
Stock TW JB Roms:
- XquizIt LI8v2 Base v20
- Frosty Jellybean
I'm sure there are also stable CM9 roms if your looking for a vanilla ICS feel but I prefer the stock touchwiz so I've never flashed any of those type of roms. I've flashed a couple CM10 based roms that have vanilla JB but they have bugs aren't as stable IMO. I haven't tried every rom available but I've tried a good amount and these are the ones that I found myself returning to/currently using.

Great answer dude! You're quite the contributor to this community.
To OP: If you don't want ICS, a Stock Jellybean ROM should convince you do flash a ROM because you know, it's Jellybean.
Or if you don't like Touchwiz, you can flash an AOSP ICS or Jellybean ROM because you know, AOSP.

It's funny how you are self-centered enough to think someone on the internet that calls you out for being a smartass is "following" you. Try being useful and helping someone other than being a douchebag, and I won't call you out whenever I see you being one.
I'm running AOKP and in all honesty i find it to be about the same speed.. pretty stable (not 100%, but a good 98% )
It's just the extra toggles that come with the roms.. battery%, weather, notification bar toggles, LCD density.. tablet mode eh.. yeah..
oh.. and supposedly battery life is better with custom roms/kernels.. (though for me honestly I have yet to experience a REALLY notable difference)
If you have rooted and flashed roms before, why not try now? You can always backup your stock incase you aren't happy.
but if you have never flashed.. and you're happy with stock, just wait until the official JB release comes out..
This place never changes #sigh this is the first phone since HTC Wing I have been satisfied enough with the experience to run stock. I will prolly root just for Titanium and stuff like that but maybe wait for JB. I have been really enjoying a flawless experience without constantly monkying around.

If your a casual user with no need to mod the system, don't root. I rooted mine because I root my previous phone to improve performance by freezing some apps but on this baby I do not have a need for that.
It works great. Unrooted mine, triangle away and flash back stock rom. And still it works very nicely.
One word of advice though.. First thing to do before switching it on, is to insert your sim card..

Congratulation...i love my note 2...im so addicted to it.
Ok here is my opinion:
1) buy a screen protector and a flip cover.
2) download samsung note 2 toolkit v3.0...flash cwm..and make a full nandroid backup.
3) root it via the toolbox..and download omega 10 rom+ redphill 1.01 kernel. "You will love the battery".
4)after installing the kernel...you will see an app called SStweaks...open it and try to undervolt as much as possible.
5) set in cpu hot plug register...how many cpu clock you want to use..i advice you...2 is enough for average use.
6)these app you should download.
Whats app, viper, poweramp(best sound player),root browser lite(best free filemanager with root and has the ability to extract any archive), Sms backup and restore pro..(the name says what it does), Ringdroid(if you want to cut mp3 files), utorrent(best u torrent client), Network monitor mini(to have allways an overview of your intetnet speeed next to the status bar)!!!
I hope these information was useful for you.
Enjoy your new device.

its an interesting point vash_h makes though. my current phone has a normal sim card but this new one i believe takes a micro sim which is meant to come with the phone today. Now following McLaren__F1 advice i dont really want to take the phone to work without a case. so what happens if i put both sim cards in both phones? As they are both on the same network with the same number will they both work or will the old one finish as soon as the new one is inserted?
i love the checklist aloush5592 rest assured i will take your advice thanks. I'm definitely going to root this bad boy as well as i want to use some apps like bestbatterystat etc. Network monitor mini sounds like a good app too thanks.

I would recommend you spend some time with stock first. I, and lots of others it seems, who always flash custom roms on a device after a few days, for once found stock to be pretty amazing on this device. Root it, remove bloatware, and what you have there is a very stable stock rom, besides most of the roms in non-original development are really close to stock anyway.

An idea: Why not have one thread (it can be a sticky on top) that allows for people to post their experiences with ROMs. That way, people can read up on pros and cons in that thread. We could even look to have a poll for people to vote. I think there should be a good summary section of all these ROMs so people can narrow their options down a little.
The People's ROM has been my daily so far, BTW.

Actually thats the rom thread already. A rom i run on my phone might not run the same way on your phone, so feedback on pros and cons of a rom depends on the user phone. Its not hard looking through a changelog and comments/feedback to pick out a rom of choice.

Which is the best available ROM for Sprint Samsung S3.
I have tried MIUI, found it ok. But didnt like the Apple style Home page. Any other ROM. Tried Viper, but I am not a big fan of Blue.
Please help.

Cruise threads. Find a rom, read what people have said (last few post typically) flash and try for yourself. These threads pop up and get taken down almost daily. Please spend a bit of time trying them out and reading a bit on them. You will find a good fit.
The Peoples rom (either one) and freegs3 are great. And morphology (in themes) allpws you to make it yours.

You just have to try them out, theres no "rom selection guide for harismahesh" out there, because no one but YOU can be the ultimate judge in whether a rom is the best fit for your needs or for your particular usage.

The liquidsmooth ROMs are pretty good
Do you like AOSP? Do you like stock? Do you like themed ROMs? Are you looking for something stable? What's your definition of stable?
Everyone is different. You have to explore and find what fits you. We are all unique.

I have had lots of luck with Phantom Hacker's roms. As others have noted though, lots of great developers here. Everything is personal preference

Honestly it depends on what you're looking for if you're looking for a true Android experience or if you like the TouchWiz experience or any other launcher for that matter.
Personally I like wicked sensations which is a TouchWiz rom and everything seems to work good on it including wifi tether in TouchWiz which is a rare thing to find. I will warn you that wicked sensations is way overly themed so if you want something a little more stock you may want to try blazer ROM the only catch is that wifi tethering is not working.
If you're looking for something that isn't TouchWiz you may want to try Cyanogen mod I know it's kind of mainstream and all but it works and it's generally what I look for it's more of a pure Android experience and everything works including wifi tethering USB tethering.
With that being said I would recommend trying a bunch of different ones make sure you're comfortable with flashing your phone before doing this. Every ROM has its flaws and benefits just make sure your verifying that it's for your phone before flashing.

LEGENDARY was a great rom! Now that was over a year ago, a different device and Gingerbread. This and the chocolate, vanilla and strawberry post are the reasons that this question while at the moment you thought about it it sounded right but it's really useless. Every one who advised you to go to the Development threads and read and try them out is right.
By the way I like 'Rocky Road'
