I think I smiled, stroked it, and then gave it a kiss. In pretty much that order.
If your a casual user with no need to mod the system, don't root. I rooted mine because I root my previous phone to improve performance by freezing some apps but on this baby I do not have a need for that.
It works great. Unrooted mine, triangle away and flash back stock rom. And still it works very nicely.
One word of advice though.. First thing to do before switching it on, is to insert your sim card..

Take it to your friends with iphones and show off all the features. Congrats, you're going to love it.
Congratulation...i love my note 2...im so addicted to it.
Ok here is my opinion:
1) buy a screen protector and a flip cover.
2) download samsung note 2 toolkit v3.0...flash cwm..and make a full nandroid backup.
3) root it via the toolbox..and download omega 10 rom+ redphill 1.01 kernel. "You will love the battery".
4)after installing the kernel...you will see an app called SStweaks...open it and try to undervolt as much as possible.
5) set in cpu hot plug register...how many cpu clock you want to use..i advice you...2 is enough for average use.
6)these app you should download.
Whats app, viper, poweramp(best sound player),root browser lite(best free filemanager with root and has the ability to extract any archive), Sms backup and restore pro..(the name says what it does), Ringdroid(if you want to cut mp3 files), utorrent(best u torrent client), Network monitor mini(to have allways an overview of your intetnet speeed next to the status bar)!!!
I hope these information was useful for you.
Enjoy your new device.
Keep an eye of it.

thanks for the relpies guys i probably will do that nobnut, Stekarn_13.
its an interesting point vash_h makes though. my current phone has a normal sim card but this new one i believe takes a micro sim which is meant to come with the phone today. Now following McLaren__F1 advice i dont really want to take the phone to work without a case. so what happens if i put both sim cards in both phones? As they are both on the same network with the same number will they both work or will the old one finish as soon as the new one is inserted?
i love the checklist aloush5592 rest assured i will take your advice thanks. I'm definitely going to root this bad boy as well as i want to use some apps like bestbatterystat etc. Network monitor mini sounds like a good app too thanks.
i reckon ill be doing alot of that too Grant Barker and you know them iphone fan boys are gonna be getting a visit boodies.
thanks again for the tips folks cant wait till the door bell rings lol.

I would recommend you spend some time with stock first. I, and lots of others it seems, who always flash custom roms on a device after a few days, for once found stock to be pretty amazing on this device. Root it, remove bloatware, and what you have there is a very stable stock rom, besides most of the roms in non-original development are really close to stock anyway.

Has complete stock functionality but subtlety fixes any bugs that would be obvious to the casual user.
My mother's GS2 definitely needs some finishing touches that Samsung couldn't crank out.
Can somebody point me to the best stock-ish ROM in this forum?
Thanks to the people who make good suggestions.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I would say Calkulins rom. Has the stock look and feel but is superior in every category when it comes to the stock rom. I feel it's how the phone should come stock.
I would suggest a stock 2.6 ROM, SpeedMod kernel and Jkays Deluxe.
Also check out CheckROM if you really wanna go down the route of a new ROM

please do NOT do any of that. you will probably brick the phone. use calks. its really good and pretty much a stock feel. 2.8.1 is the one u want. the guy above me was suggesting a rom not for the epic. remember just because its an S2 doesn't mean we can flash their roms. stay in our dev section or the phone will likely be done for good.
Your going to get alot of different opinions on this topic, but I am going with Calkulin's on this one.

hopefully me chiming in will make your choice easier. I went with Caulkins rom too for my wife. She likes the stock feel and it has that and like everyone else said its superior to stock. I upgraded my modem to el29 which has been the best for me. also if you have gps issues flash the gps driver.
One more vote for Calkulin's Rom. Stock looking with great battery life because of the battery scripts it runs. You don't need to know anything about the scripts, they just run in the background. There are also some really great themes available if she wants to make it pretty. Try flashing different modems until you find the best one. Personally I've had the best luck with EL26 but everyone's results are different.
For a stock look I'd say Calks as well. Or you could just root her phone, add Titanium Backup and add and subtract from the stock rom itself........
Yup flash Calkulin and your done. Don't bother with any weird combinations.

Holy hell guys, thanks for the quick response. Now I just have to convince my mom to let me get my hands on that phone of hers! Haha, thanks again.
I'll vote just root what she has and make simple mods. If you do any type of custom rom, anything that goes wrong, you'll have to be her tech support because she'll blame whatever you installed as the issue, true or not.
Same here. Stock + rooted.

I agree Calkulins is the best on here if your looking for something close to stock that has speed and performance
Calkulin's, without a doubt. Put the EL13 modem on it though

this is what I did for my wife when she first got the phone. Stock EK02, only rooted. I disabled CIQ, used titanium backup to freeze sprint bloatware, and disabled DRM.
I think for the EL29 update, i'll just flash Caulk's ROM (like what everyone is suggesting) so at least she'll have the battery scripts, modded camera app, 5 dock icons, bloatware removed, and little tweaks like that. I would just use titanium back up to make periodic backups to her external SD card.
My vote (which probably doesn't mean very much as a noob but I just like to be different) goes to BlazerROM. I love the theme and she shouldn't feel particularly lost coming from the stock ROM. I'm running it currently and it's been very good to me.

I get about 3 days out of my battery before the meter hits 30% with moderate use (checking facebook a few times a day, Words With Friends, Music player for short trips in the car, etc.) which I think is pretty good considering I always have WiFi on at home (turn it off while travelling unless I know there's a hotspot around). I am extremely anal about killing processes when I'm done with them though, so a casual user may not see the same results.

Hey, guys. I am looking to to start developing a ROM this summer. I wanted some input from you guys on what kind of stuff you wanted in it. I want to do something DIFFERENT. Please don't expect me to make AOKP 2.0 or anything like that. This will be my first ROM ever and I want to make something cool, and learn more as I do it. Any suggestions are welcome, but I don't want any crap. Thanks guys.
First off good luck to ya! I have dipped my toes in some of the dev'ing world but have never had enough time to get fully immersed.
Second, keep it fun. From what I can tell most of the devs that keep doing it for the long run enjoy what they are doing, and generally don't get too caught up in the drama.
Finally, I would like a ROM that is just different. I don't know how to describe it right now, but going from CM9 to AOKP to Gummy just feels like I am just changing a couple features. I would love a ROM that is just nothing like anything out there right now. Like I said, I don't know how you could do that but i'm sure there is stuff out there.

The funny part is that people actually want that.
Hi,
It may be hard to build a new rom different from the others. Each rom here provides everything that one can hope, stock to highly customisable (maybe a little bloated),fast,light,themed,etc...
I think it's good to start to ask for ideas and opinions but keep mainly your own ideas because if you take into account all the ideas of everyone, once started you cannot do it to please everyone...
I think the most people here want a fast/customisable rom but we have already a big choice...Take a look in the dev section to check what all rom proposes...
For me no more idea of what I would like more than my actual rom or others I've tested...
Maybe like the most here a fast, light and clean rom, customisable but just the necessary (navbar, toggles, lockscreen) and maybe a themed rom directly (the risk of not pleasing everyone). But the problem is this kind of rom already exists...Arghh,hard!Just find a balance between pure stock and highly customisable.A kind of Revolution rom (by Mike1986) with the mods I said above.
Some users wants almost pure stock...but with 2/3 things customisable not a full customisable rom, maybe look at it,in this direction?
It's just my opinion,I never build a rom but when you look into the dev section sometimes the devs must pull out his hair (sorry,Google translate for this ).
But in any case good luck

Build roms with Superhero Themes....
Sent from a phone...
Go beyond the standard launcher. Create a hub that will blow people away with it's usability/features/difference/etc..
Taking theming to the next level, passed MIUI.
Create your own widgets that are excellent to use and optimized as can be.
Also, make an awe inspiring Messaging app. One that's fast, themable, that let's you set a signature properly, and has a decent pop up. (People claim GoSMS to be too bloated.)
Code your own set of widgets into the notification pull down (not just toggles).
Build it using linario, if possible.
Create your own, integrated and optimized, rom manager.
Code dragging up on the navigation bar to have more controls/other goodies.
Create a clean looking (but themable) lock screens with short cuts to essential apps. And add a cool animation or two.
Oh, and good luck on your first rom!

What are your qualifications?
Not taking a pot shot or being douchey. Just wondering.
Without knowing that, people will throw every ridiculous idea at you without knowing what you are or are not capable of.
This is bordering on being a hype thread way before development has begun
But seriously, Google would have been the first place to start. And there are PLENTY of "so you wanna build (insert rom name) for the galaxy nexus" threads. So if you can't build from someone else's source yet, than this thread is pointless in its own way.
good day.
I know how to build from source.
To Adrynalyne: no much tbh. Pretty much just what I've picked up from my time on here and from friends. I figure I need to start somewhere lol.

Nah, it didn't cost that much time though. Just went on that server to socialize here and there, you'll attain some resources over time and then you try to build with it. As you see, everything is built with very cheap materials like sand and wood.
You just need a plan on what you want to build, and if you have the idea and don't need to remove or rebuild parts, a giant building will be finished in 2 hours.
Just curious if the attached image is about what I should be expecting in terms of battery life. The screen seems to draw a lot more than I'm used to (then again this is my first experience with AMOLED screens).
Also, for those who have rooted and installed cm or a similar custom ROM, would I see a significant difference if I went beyond the stock firmware?

To find your actual screen on time: go to the screen you were at when u took screenshot, and then tap where it says "Screen".
It will bring another screen up with information about how much total time the screen was on.
The galaxy nexus(especially toro due to its LTE/CDMA radio combo which is also very draining on battery) is not going to ever give you stellar battery life. I HIGHLY recommend grabbing yourself an extra battery (or two lol) to carry around like I do. They are small enough to throw an extra in ya pocket or wallet when you go out. And will give you much peace of mind in knowing that you have a full backup battery with ya.(also, at this point these batteries even OEM Samsung ones are VERY cheap. Even the OEM extended battery.(2100mah))
I will also go ahead and recommend grabbing yourself an external charger.(If you want, I can link you to the one I purchased long ago, it is official Samsung one, came with an extended Gnex battery and charging cable. And can ALSO be used as a stand for device, I also used to use it as a perfect little stand for my nexus 7 tablet.
I personally have 3 batteries(1extended OEM, 2 regular OEM, I USED to have ANTHER extended OEM one but I dropped it in a puddle lolol) and they are well worth the money especially beings as now they will be even cheaper than when I got em.
Let me know if you'd like the link to the Samsung external charger/battery combo I got.
ALSO:
WELCOME to the forums! Just remember posts like this should go in the Q/A or General section, development sections new thread posts are for ROM/kernel/development topics don't be discouraged if your post gets moved
You MIGHT want to try a custom kernel to see if you get better battery life(and probably performance also! Bonus!) you can use kernels from the Galaxy Nexus Android Development section. You do not have to use only the ones found in the VZW Gnex forum. But for a ROM, make sure to ONLY use the ones from the Verizon Wireless Gnex section. Kernels will work on any variant, ROMs are NOT interchangeable (you will prolly end up having to flash stock factory img thru fastboot or toolkit if u flash wrong ROM variant. But that isn't so bad, very easy)
Sorry for such the long reply, just trying to make your transition to the Gnex world easier hopefully
Wow. Could I look like more of a noob? Don't know how the post got here, I thought I specifically put this in Q&A. At least this explains why I didn't see my post show up there. Well, either I or Tapatalk are goofing up. Anyways, thanks for the informative replies despite my error. It's an example of what makes XDA great!

Also, for those who have rooted and installed cm or a similar custom ROM, would I see a significant difference if I went beyond the stock firmware?
Thanks very much!

You are going to love this phone!
I suggest flashing a kitkat ROM ASAP.
Have fun!

No worries, I think it could be Tapatalk anyways, cuz now Tapatalk is showing TWO of this thread here and one is showing all kinds of </br > junk in it. It acts up sometimes(gotta love how I paid for the first Tapatalk paid app, which is now free and ad supported I yhink, AND I purchased this Tapatalk HD/pro(?) Whatever they wanna call it now, ONLY cuz I figured okay maybe all the updates won't constantly break functionality like they did on previous app since they overhauled a lot of it. But yea....I mean it works good MOST of the time but they only JUST fixed the INSANE lag from large posts that have a lot of thanks(see v6superharger thread as example, used to be gawd awful scrolling the first post...prolly still is lmao... Just wish mobile browsing wasn't so horrid most of time or another COMPETING app to push development to be better. Though I'm sure its tough to try and get these apps nearly prefect with ALL the constantly changing forums they support and such....BUT...that's an AshRants for another day...lmao sorry I ramble a lot.)
Even tho battery life for toro(vzw gnex) really leaves something to be desired, the device is EASILY one of the funnest to own and tinker with. SO MANY CHOICES makes finding "that prefect setup" a LOT of fun. And the kernels available are just stellar.(I highly recommend one of the most active as of late either DirtyV(by @bsmitty83 I use his smittyV builds personally), Fancy(by @boype ) or HybridRemix( by @Pattyboi I think I spelled his name right..he has taken over maintaining and pushing updates to the stellar ASKP kernel with his own tweaks added in) things have never been dull in development for Galaxy Nexus but have also just recently gotten pretty exciting for users and devs alike. And the community (as you can probably already tell) has become one of the friendliest around. And there is TONS of info all over in here. Lap it all up, and have fun!
A while back, we posted an article about how to sign up to beta test Android Marshmallow on the Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, and Galaxy Note 5 on select carriers. If you have an AT&T Galaxy S6 edge (SM-G925A), AT&T Galaxy Note 5 (SM-N920A), Verizon Galaxy S6 edge (SM-G925V), or Verizon Galaxy S6 edge+ (SM-G928V), you can visit here and sign up for the official beta. The good news is that it has started seeding for the Galaxy note 5 and we have a few screenshots from one of our readers.

For at least the AT&T Galaxy Note 5, they selected only 200 participants, it is unknown if other devices got more or less at this time. Our reader was emailed with the instructions to download the Samsung app which would then install the beta to his device. The Note 5 now has build number MMB29K.N920AUCU2BPB1 and the kernel version has a build date of today, February 2nd, meaning it was probably pushed late last night Korean time. The update size for the beta was just over a gigabyte at 1355.94 MB, so it is quite hefty.
is there a way to get the update file and sideload it?
Anyway I can sign up now?
How did people sign up that sucks we missed out.

It was on Reddit thread, someone posted a link there.
Would be fantastic if someone could provide those files or instructions for installing the beta that they received from Samsung...

Just got an update for Samsung Pay that makes it "M OS compatible" so maybe this is a hint that it's right around the corner..

I've been considering it for a while.. Just can't get myself to pull the trigger on it. I love the note 5 but I also love root and vanilla android. Lately battery has kind of sucked for me too.. But that's a story for another thread haha.

I had the 6P and came back to my Note 5 in about a month. All 3 that I had bent from no extra force other than having it in my loose front pocket by itself. And I always took it out before I sat down or bent over/down.
Not only that, the screen isn't as good or bright and I didn't think the camera was as good either. And rooting is overrated in this day and age. I got bored with it quick. Yes the phone is smooth, but it lacked too many features for me.
You may like it, but proceed cautiously is my advice.
I don't miss the amount of time I wasted rooting and flashing just to achieve instability and marginal benefits.

I tend to agree, but I did like having a nandroid backup, being able to backup and restore apps simply, adaway (adguard is ok, but have to disable to join my vpn), and simple things like volume music controls.
Did Samsung enable more options on the alarm clock? Specifically if you can adjust the snooze settings other than just turn it on or off.

Sounds like a job like mine, well not so much anymore. Used to "babbysit" servers.
