Bored... Your thoughts? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Im running CM9, Came from an N1 (which i still think is a great phone). Anyhow, I do like ICS I think the GNex is nice device, but its somewhat boring stock, and not much better than that with CM9...
Im not sure if CM is just falling by the wayside, but the CM7 software on my N1 had sooo much more to tinker with (they really made android come alive)
What does everyone else think? Any nice ROMs I should be flashing that are more advanced in development?

Go bunjee jumping. Not very boring.

Try AOKP.

Go read up on the thread for Android development, then the themes and apps, there's so much going on, you won't be bored =)
Also Liquid smooth has many tweaks and customizations you can try

CM9 is still being developed, they're still porting features and things over from CM7 as well as developing new features. They'll have a lot more when they're done.

A lot of the features from Liquidsmooth are from AOKP. Look at "Liquid Control" vs "ROM Control."

And I know for a fact that AOKP had ROM Control first with a lot of these settings. Not calling them out or anything but a lot of ROMs share features (kanging source).

Try MIUI. Try the different ports from Xperia's to Sense 4.0 (although most of them aren't stable enough for daily use they can be played with for a day and is quite interesting.)

I think its just that back in the day Android, and the carrier customizations were so crappy that you absolutely needed to tinker with the phone to get it to work right.
I'm finding I'm bored too with ICS. It's because I don't need to do anything to it. Its like tinkering with the settings page of Gmail. "this is... good."

My thoughts? I think you should get a girlfriend… and spend less time with your phone.

AOKP has an incredible amount of tweaks.

Sounds like you need to flash a buggy ROM or two son.

Yeah doesn't aokp have a huge jump on cm9 with features? You really should try aokp. Cm9 needs more dev time.

AOKP has more features but less stability / speed.
OP, give this a shot: http://bit.ly/zg5fZw It adds some features to CM9 that allow for some more customization.

Some might call that bloat.

I am using AOKP for fast featured tweaks/mods and stable rom. I'll eventually jump back to cyanogen, after they reached RC1. Or maybe AOKP for Gnex, CM9 for sgs2. But oh well, after using AOKP, i tend to stay with it a long time without trying other roms. Its the best for now.

the CM9 is very stable which is great, just needs more stuff ported over. I wouldn't buy a phone unsupported by CM I've loved there roms in past.

I Might Be Wrong But I Think This Phone Does Not Need Custom Roms

I had the gsm version of the GN on Tmobile and now i have the CDMA/LTE Version with Verizon and I got to say this is the first phone that I can actually say there is no need for a custom rom. I had the galaxy s, mytouch 4g, htc sensation and on all those phones a custom rom was always a must and that is not the case with this phone. I have tried many custom roms on here both gsm and cdma and I still havent found one that runs any better, faster or smoother then the stock one. Dont get me wrong I appreciate the developers working on this phone but thats just my opinion I wanted to share with everyone specially the people new to this phone. All you need is root and your good to go for a few custom mods and wireless tethering
No phone needs a custom ROM. A lot of people want custom ROMs. Some may want them more than others. You're happy with the stock setup and thats great. Doesn't mean everyone is.
True thats why I said I might be wrong. Just expressing my thoughts about this phone so far
Custom roms ruin phones. Too many issues. I dont care if they make certain parts better; they always cause more issues than it's worth IMO.

I agree. Not that I'm ungrateful to the modders/devs but I don't know how many times I've seen "smooth as butter, no bugs, ultra fast" etc only to have multiple issues with a ROM.
I totally disagree. My Nexus is running much better after rooting and running a custom ROM. And I have absolutely no issues to speak of other than better battery life and a noticeably faster phone.

I'm on AOKP build X1 with Leankernel 1.1.0. Custom voltages as well.
I'm on the fence about this, might give a custom from a try soon. Think I'll stick with the stock kernel for a while though.

Could you provide a link? Thank you.
Many people get a development-friendly Google Experience phone such as this for the express purpose of using custom ROMs. Many others just want a straight Android phone with no TouchWiz/Sense/Blur on it and that gets timely software updates. To each his own (though I like to push the boundaries of Android's potential and try various ROM/kernel/mod/theme combinations). Yes, custom ROMs often have bugs in them (our devs often work alone or with small teams for free and squeeze dev work between job and family life - besides, even stock has bugs, and Google has legions of coders and testers). In addition to some bugs, though, they usually offer performance, features, and eye candy not available on stock.
Has anyone seen John Connor?
this is what I'm on all stock rooted and clockwork recovery. battery life is great and I don't have the problems that some people have experienced with google apps and with the market not restoring etc. and like I said I have tried custom roms on both the GSM and CDMA/LTE Galaxy Nexus. just sharing my experience on both phone also to add Verizons Network runs 2-3 times faster then Tmobile's Network in Los Angeles.

i have to agree. i am rooted but find no rom got my interest. maybe cm9, but it's not stable yet.
my main reason to root my phones have always been to remove all the sh!t that verizon puts in their phones, so with this one being 90% crapware free,i feel no need to root it.
A ROM may not be necessary, but a new launcher for sure. Nova launcher allows enough customization to do most things.
Roman just released a "milestone" ROM version of aokp that's solid and ships with stock kernel. His drop down toggles are the best.
Its my daily driver now for sure. I hit it hard flashing since I bought this phone, but need to take a break and this ROM is it for me. And I'm sticking with stock kernel just to keep GTA 3 working

New ROM/Dev

Hey, guys. I am looking to to start developing a ROM this summer. I wanted some input from you guys on what kind of stuff you wanted in it. I want to do something DIFFERENT. Please don't expect me to make AOKP 2.0 or anything like that. This will be my first ROM ever and I want to make something cool, and learn more as I do it. Any suggestions are welcome, but I don't want any crap. Thanks guys.
First off good luck to ya! I have dipped my toes in some of the dev'ing world but have never had enough time to get fully immersed.
Second, keep it fun. From what I can tell most of the devs that keep doing it for the long run enjoy what they are doing, and generally don't get too caught up in the drama.
Finally, I would like a ROM that is just different. I don't know how to describe it right now, but going from CM9 to AOKP to Gummy just feels like I am just changing a couple features. I would love a ROM that is just nothing like anything out there right now. Like I said, I don't know how you could do that but i'm sure there is stuff out there.

The funny part is that people actually want that.
Hi,
It may be hard to build a new rom different from the others. Each rom here provides everything that one can hope, stock to highly customisable (maybe a little bloated),fast,light,themed,etc...
I think it's good to start to ask for ideas and opinions but keep mainly your own ideas because if you take into account all the ideas of everyone, once started you cannot do it to please everyone...
I think the most people here want a fast/customisable rom but we have already a big choice...Take a look in the dev section to check what all rom proposes...
For me no more idea of what I would like more than my actual rom or others I've tested...
Maybe like the most here a fast, light and clean rom, customisable but just the necessary (navbar, toggles, lockscreen) and maybe a themed rom directly (the risk of not pleasing everyone). But the problem is this kind of rom already exists...Arghh,hard!Just find a balance between pure stock and highly customisable.A kind of Revolution rom (by Mike1986) with the mods I said above.
Some users wants almost pure stock...but with 2/3 things customisable not a full customisable rom, maybe look at it,in this direction?
It's just my opinion,I never build a rom but when you look into the dev section sometimes the devs must pull out his hair (sorry,Google translate for this ).
But in any case good luck

Build roms with Superhero Themes....
Sent from a phone...
Go beyond the standard launcher. Create a hub that will blow people away with it's usability/features/difference/etc..
Taking theming to the next level, passed MIUI.
Create your own widgets that are excellent to use and optimized as can be.
Also, make an awe inspiring Messaging app. One that's fast, themable, that let's you set a signature properly, and has a decent pop up. (People claim GoSMS to be too bloated.)
Code your own set of widgets into the notification pull down (not just toggles).
Build it using linario, if possible.
Create your own, integrated and optimized, rom manager.
Code dragging up on the navigation bar to have more controls/other goodies.
Create a clean looking (but themable) lock screens with short cuts to essential apps. And add a cool animation or two.
Oh, and good luck on your first rom!

Not taking a pot shot or being douchey. Just wondering.
Without knowing that, people will throw every ridiculous idea at you without knowing what you are or are not capable of.
This is bordering on being a hype thread way before development has begun
But seriously, Google would have been the first place to start. And there are PLENTY of "so you wanna build (insert rom name) for the galaxy nexus" threads. So if you can't build from someone else's source yet, than this thread is pointless in its own way.
good day.

Well I've flashed a lot of roms since I got my S3 and this is what I'd recommend if your looking for Stability/Performance/Battery:
Stock TW ICS Roms:
- Wanam Lite Rom
- FreeGS3 R6
Stock TW JB Roms:
- XquizIt LI8v2 Base v20
- Frosty Jellybean
I'm sure there are also stable CM9 roms if your looking for a vanilla ICS feel but I prefer the stock touchwiz so I've never flashed any of those type of roms. I've flashed a couple CM10 based roms that have vanilla JB but they have bugs aren't as stable IMO. I haven't tried every rom available but I've tried a good amount and these are the ones that I found myself returning to/currently using.

Great answer dude! You're quite the contributor to this community.
To OP: If you don't want ICS, a Stock Jellybean ROM should convince you do flash a ROM because you know, it's Jellybean.
Or if you don't like Touchwiz, you can flash an AOSP ICS or Jellybean ROM because you know, AOSP.

It's funny how you are self-centered enough to think someone on the internet that calls you out for being a smartass is "following" you. Try being useful and helping someone other than being a douchebag, and I won't call you out whenever I see you being one.
I'm running AOKP and in all honesty i find it to be about the same speed.. pretty stable (not 100%, but a good 98% )
It's just the extra toggles that come with the roms.. battery%, weather, notification bar toggles, LCD density.. tablet mode eh.. yeah..
oh.. and supposedly battery life is better with custom roms/kernels.. (though for me honestly I have yet to experience a REALLY notable difference)
If you have rooted and flashed roms before, why not try now? You can always backup your stock incase you aren't happy.
but if you have never flashed.. and you're happy with stock, just wait until the official JB release comes out..
This place never changes #sigh this is the first phone since HTC Wing I have been satisfied enough with the experience to run stock. I will prolly root just for Titanium and stuff like that but maybe wait for JB. I have been really enjoying a flawless experience without constantly monkying around.

Hit up the ROM Review. Also, what is your skill level and what are you looking for in a "ROM".
Stock Based
Agent- Beginner user that likes stock but wants more control and performance tweaks
Lifeless- Flashaholic that like bells and whistles and predefined goodies
Initiative- Advanced user that want a minimal base to build to suit.
AOSP/CM Based (some things are still broken but gives you "I has the latest" bragging rights)
CM- Flashaholic that loves him some Cyan Jellies
AOSP Eos 4.0- Flashaholic prefer to get as close to pure Android as possible while getting some nice bells and whistles
AOKP- Flashaholic that does care where the code comes from just as long as it works.
I've been linked to! Oh, joyous day.

I've been want to root this phone soo bad, but there are some downsides is that.. I messed up the battery life due to previous phone I had when I constantly charge it every time the battery dies within 5 hours or so, (I'm in school for 8 hours, graduating senior) and the reception gets sucky some parts of school (normal with everyone's phones that school blocks the receptions) and some areas in Newport News. I have this phone for two weeks now and I really love it. Is there any pro and cons to this ROM as posted for link? I love the minimalistic look.

Thanks about for the link. One other question. I've been trying to get the YouTube app UI to look like the 3D-ish the way it does on tablet. I change to 720p as that is the highest option I'm given and it just looks like a smaller phone version with too much white space. Anyone got that to work that way?

When the first dev Is up to it and when we get devs who buy the phone.
Chill it's going to be about a month or so till the development gets flowing

Yeah, I agree with both responses. I give it a few months. This phone is still a baby (a big and healthy one at that), but based on what I saw in the Note 2 forums when it first got released, there's a good chance we'll be seeing TONS of excellent ROMS and kernel choices coming our way. I thought my flashing addiction was over, but I have a feeling I'm going to relapse and hit rock bottom when the inevitable flood of custom ROMs comes.
Personally, I am anxious for AOSP too, but I really can't say that I am hating this version of touchwiz (solely for the S Pen functionality). If one of our devs can implement S Pen functionality in an AOSP-based ROM I'm going to need to invest in a new pair of jeans, because I will undoubtedly soil my current pair.
Be patient, brotha, this phone won't get overlooked as far as development is concerned. I'm just excited to see which developers we'll get. And when we do, let's try not to run them off.
Sub question out of curiosity, who are some developers that you guys would be thrilled to see developing for our beloved Note 3? Based on our first ROM developer, jovy23, we are off to a very promising start! My experiences with his previous works have been nothing but solid.
My $0.02; Cl3Kener, ptmr3, Jamison904, gs2usr, elbermu, prbassplayer, thederekjay, ThdDude, ayysir, Master&Slave... The list could go on. Pipedreams, man.

AOKP with S pen support! I'm actually still using my S4 as my dd until that happens because I hate Touch wiz.
im ok with liquidsmooth or slim, they were great on my sgs3!
Give it some time peeps...
Note 3 brings a whole new set of hardware... Qualcomm 800 is new and so is the GPU.
U see things happening in this order....
1) Safe Recovery
2) Kernel (Probably with SELinux set to "Permissive")
3) AOSP or at least the bits of it....
I see all this happening over the next few weeks to a month. This device is only a week old peeps... it'll happen. People are still making way of getting the device. S4 was a huge step, some people used their upgrades, some people have to buy the phone outright... I happen to be one of them lol. Just give it a bit more time....
April 26th......

Not going to happen. The most you would get is limited support. For example just basic usage but not any of the advanced features Samsung added because those are tied to TouchWiz. Unless a team writes the code to add Spen features from scratch kind of like how the PA Team created Halo, which brought multi-screen to AOSP.

I thought you were talking about the more advanced features that samsung added like Air Command and stuff. I just came from the note 2 and AOSP only supports basic usage.
I just want to say that if there is a dev out there that would be willing to write the code for all the fun features that sammy incorporated i would be willing to donate for that. i would love a rom with a lot of spen functionality and that uses google now like the s voice feature.
well people aosp is really close!!! check this out! :victory:

i wonder if there is any chance of MHL out working on the Note 3 with an AOSP rom. It never worked on the Note 2
What ever happened to don't ask for ETA's? The phone has been out for less than a month. Less than two weeks for most people. Good grief.

Not asking for ETAs is like NOT thinking about a pink elephant. Thought about. Didn't ya. Yeah.
