Broken speaker--repair or replace? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I am about one year into my VZW Gnex, and the speaker just stopped working (tried the headset switch, different roms, cleaning the headset jack etc, all with no dice) and looking for input. Since I need the sound to work, currently using my old original Incredible.
Looking for input on options
1)Find replacement speaker part and see if that works--could be a few weeks or a month to get the part
2)try to sell for parts and get GSIII on VZW
3)Drop line back to dumb phone, losing unlimited data, and go Nexus 4 on T-mob monthly--though service isn't nearly as good in my area as VZW.

dunno, I would just repair it myself but thats me

Sprint service help

So I have 2 evo's and I've been with Sprint for 10 years. In the past couple months the haptic feedback motors on both have died. My wife and I are very busy and have to move mountains to find the time to get to a Sprint store. For this reason I really DO NOT want refurbs. In my experience one refurb leads to another.
Do u guys think that sprint will work with me on this? I love the evo and wish it wasn't eol and would be perfectly happy with a NEW evo....although I know this won't happen.
Any advice? Thanks.
I've heard that some people are getting EVO 3D's instead of the 4G. It's hit or miss, but that would be cool to get a 3D as a replacement!

If you don't have insurance, then you'll either have to live with no haptic feedback, or live with a refurb, unfortunately. With the EVO being EOL, there aren't anymore "new" ones.

off topic but i lost my wimax rsa keys some where in the process of either upgrading my radio version or switching roms. unrooted the phone completely and going to take it back to sprint to try and get it fixed. So my question is Would they replace it or actually fix it?

I don't think they can fix that. You'll probably end up with a refurb, if any are available. If you had TEP you might be able to get a 3D as a comparable replacement, but otherwise you're stuck waiting for refurb OG's to get in.

If you have a nandroid backup with the wimax partition then you can just restore. CWM backs it up automatically iirc, in Amon Ra you have to select it. Sift through your nandroids for a wimax.img and you should be good to go without a replacement.

Yes you will get a refurb. I really don't understand why people demand a new phone when the one they have now is clearly used. If you get in a car accident, you dont get a brand new car, you get a similar model worth a comparable cost.

Car insurance also doesn't give you a replacement that may or may not have been in an accident before you get a car that has never been in an accident, phone insurance you get whatever they give you no matter how much worse off it is than the phone you are replacing, like my evo for example looks brand new, I wouldn't want a refurbished that is all scratched up with light bleeding and a creaky power button I want a phone in like new condition like mine, that's y I don't pay for assurion anything they cover I can replace/repair for less than the 100$ deductible and keep a phone that I know where it's been and what's happened to it

My experience is that most refurbs have brand new casing slapped on them now for that reason alone. Too many people would call in upset their replacement phone had scratches. I've never had any problems with the refurbished phones.
However, you're going to get a refurb, evo4g isn't manufactured anymore if you want a phone it's going to have to be refurb. Though the sprint store can replace anything on your phone if they have the parts, I know one time a sprint repair store swapped all the guts from one evo 4g to another just so they wouldn't get the refurb phone.
I don't understand what's wrong with a refurb phone as long as it's a brand new case and screen.
You never know why it was refurbished every refurbished I've ever gotten seemed to be defective starting just after the complaint period was over that's why I cancelled my insurance I can repair my phone myself cheaper than paying the deductible I can get the LCD digitizer with front bezel and an entire housing for 85 bucks if I need it anything worse than that and ill just upgrade to a new phone its about time anyways evos been around since release so upgrades coming up soon

The refurbs do have a new casing on them. Shouldn't have scratches. If you read the copy given when going to a repair center, it states that the technician may use "harvested" parts. Also, the refurbs coming back are also dependant on the initial diagnoses, tech sends it in for a bad touchscreen but no mention of USB issues, next person is SOL. They do get checked prior to shipping out to your service center.
The majority of techs that Sprint has, do not have techy experience. Also, they aren't allowed to solder anything, any longer. I soldered a power button back on for a customer, but couldn't claim labor, cause I wasn't supposed to have done it. I didn't want to order it either, because we're given a budget/exchange limitation on a monthly basis.
I have a refurbished 3D(through Asurion in August, my brand new 3D is the Gulf), which I have flashed the hell out of, it's still going. Maybe I got lucky.

they said they checked the antenna and files and every thing was "ok" on it but they just couldn't understand why the 4g wouldn't stay connected. thought to my self maybe cause the keys are gone. but then again they said they would replace it for another one for no cost, so just stayed quiet. I had done backup's using CWM and Amon ra before loosing my keys but when i went back to re-storing a back-up i had done it still didn't re store my keys. some how they were't there aswell.
To be more straightforward here......can I refuse a refurb? I have nothing but bad experiences with them in the past. I believe, if I recall, that years ago I refused a refurb politely and was given a new phone. I suspect if this phone wasn't out of production they'd give me a new one (or 2 in my case).

Not really. As stated, with Best Buy and with Sprint, their policy is usually to give you 3 refurbs before they allow you to move to a new device.

[Q] [Verizon] Galaxy Nexus losing signal constantly - fixes?

I'm on my 3rd Galaxy Nexus. Thankfully Verizon has been good about replacing them, albeit with recertified devices. Here's my device history:
Headphone jack stopped working. No signal issues.
3G/4G connectivity drops out frequently when sitting in one place with strong signal. Battery drains insanely fast.
Same as #2
I've been rooting/unlocking all of them and running AOKP with the 4.0.4 radios. Both of the recertified devices they've sent me have been 4.0.2 that I upgraded. Are there different hardware versions of the GNex on Verizon? I don't get why the first one I had didn't have any signal issues and now both of these replacements do.
Any ideas?
There are 2 hardware versions 9, which was basically the first batch from Korea, and 10, which is everything shipped since then. You can tell what version you have based on your baseband in the about menu in settings.
I515.09 is version 9.
I515.10 is version 10.
There doesn't appear to be major performance differences between the two. However, different radios affect different versions distinctly. The radios from the leaked 4.0.4 IMM30B build seem to improve v9 and either decrease or have no effect on v10, for example.
As a Day 1 owner, I have v9. I have had no radio issues. Others have v10 and no issues. If you've had 3 devices, you probably have a v10, but might have received a v9 before. Probably the one you bought.
Interesting. Both of the new ones (with connectivity issues) are v10. I guess I didn't realize radio images could cause such drastic connectivity problems. I mean, the phone is sitting in place going from 5 bars to no signal...
Interestingly, I am seeing the same behavior. My signal drops at random times in locations I know are known good locations, e.g., my office in downtown Baltimore.
In my case, the signal drops are on a replacement device, as I cracked the screen on my original GNex. This is after replacing my SIM as well.
This replacement device is a v10 as well.

I've tried every radio image available and I'm still getting this issue. Looks like I'm not the only one:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24345
Guess I just have to keep getting replacements from Verizon unless anyone has any ideas for how to fix this with some sort of software/firmware change.
I too am on my third one, going to have to get a 4th.
1) Inability to keep signal. I checked with verizon and they said that it was a defective sim card reader.
2) Charger port died, about 45 days from when it was purchased.
3) Same as 1, unconfirmed if it's the sim card reader.
The problem here is the garbage that Verizon sends out as CLNR devices. I went through I think six, YES SIX CLNR Touch Pro2's about 4 years ago before they agreed to send me an OG Droid, then I went through three of those. Then two Thunderbolts. Problems were mainly cosmetic, but also radio problems.
Now I'm waiting on Nexus #3, the first one had a cracked bezel in the upper left, the second had two notches in the bottom of the bezel. Hopefully the third time will be the charm. I take great care of my phones and keep them in like-new condition, so I expect my replacements to be also.
The woman I talked to today told me it was "only the 3rd time in 7 years" that she had heard of someone receiving a bad CLNR phone. I almost laughed into the phone and sarcastically told her "I guess I'm just lucky?". Unbelievable.

I've had one "certified" bionic and I honestly couldn't tell it from a new one. Six months later I'm having the data drop issues and they're sending me a nexus. Hoping we both have some luck with this.
Are you getting the extended battery? They told me they were out of the regular batteries so I'm getting the extended.

So I had or I guess still have a model 09. It is rock solid with data and connectivity. No dropped calls whatsoever. But it does suffer from a blown speaker. So I received a replacement model 10. Wouldn't connect to network. No 4g no service. Sent it back and kept 09 model. Received my new replacement today. Also model 10. It would drop service and data every 5 minutes. Returning it and should get another replacement. I would rather use my 09 model with a broken speaker than the 10 model. Verizon did acknowledge the problem between models and stated they were working on a software update. Couldn't tell me a release date. To my knowledge that is prob the only fix, waiting for verizon. Or you can keep getting replacements until you get an 09 model.

Well I came from a Thunderbolt that I had a history of problems with and the tech agreed to send me a Nexus. He said they were out of standard, so I would have to purchase my own battery. I agreed considering I was getting a HUGE upgrade. I went and bought an extended for $25 in store.
When I called back to get a second Nexus after my first was cracked, the tech told me that I shouldn't have had to pay and he would order me a standard battery and door for free.
When the second phone arrived and was damaged, I asked the woman I spoke to about the battery again. She said she had no idea when it would be back in stock, so she ordered me a battery dock/charger, which comes with a standard battery. So that's about a $30 value. If you want to be persistent, you could keep calling and ask for a standard battery. I'm sure they would send you one for free once they are in stock.
Nexus #3 seem to have no physical problems and the screen looks good. Hopefully there are no internal problems. Good luck with your replacement.

I have I515.09, but still have the intermittent signal issue, although not quite every 5 minutes (maybe 30). I've had the problem since the original 4.0.2 and factory baseband, 4.0.4 and its baseband, and 4.1.1 with 4.0.4's (Verizon doesn't have 4.1.1 baseband update yet).
About to get my 4th device...
1. Charging bug. When phone wasn't plugged in the phone constantly thought it was being charged on and off
2. Crappy purple tinted screen
3. Dropping signal...
The Certified devices blow, the first phone I had was a 09 I would bet. Korean made. The two replacements have been 10 and chinese made... I'm demanding a Korean made 09 phone.

VZW Galaxy Nexus Radio Issues

My original galaxy nexus was replaced two weeks ago and now all the refurbishes replacements that I've gotten from Verizon are all experiencing the same issue. The cellular radio shuts off randomly. I basically spent the day at the Verizon store and they just said they were going to ship me another replacement phone, which would make it my third replacement. Is their anyway I can fix the phone myself?
Thanks for the help.
Did you try a new sim card? Sounds simple but worked for me.

So I'm not the only one. My original launch week phone had been working perfectly, but in the past couple of weeks the touchscreen controller has been going south and registering a bunch of nonexistent touches and locking up. I've been through two Vzw refurbs so far and they both do exactly what you describe. The radio will randomly cut out and take a minute or so to recover.
So much for "certified like new." I haven't even unlocked/flashed this one. I'm using it 100% factory stock and it still happens.
There's a bad "lot" from the ones manufactured in January and February of this year. My original Nexus, my girlfriend's, my best friend's and my buddy's are all 11.11 (November, 2011). Asurion first sent me a refurb 12.01 - cycled radios. They replaced it with another refurb 12.01 - also cycled radios. Third replacement was a brand new 12.02 unit - it was actually the worst of the three. When set to LTE/CDMA, it would cycle the radios every 3-5 minutes, without fail (more if you were actively using it). It cycled 24 times during the hour I spent in the Verizon store, but they still claimed it was a network issue. In fact, it couldn't even complete the setup/activation wizard on data. It dropped out before even finishing that the very first time I turned it on after taking it out of the box.
So, my buddy lent me his to use while I got it all worked out (since he dropped data on his plan for the time being) and as it turned out, the same day he lent it to me, I stopped at the other Verizon store that I know the manager at. After a TON of jumping through hoops (on their part, trying to exchange out a unit I received from Asurion for a new one they had in-stock, not mine), and sacrificing my unlimited data and an extension of my contract later (both of which were last resorts and the only way it could be processed in the system, and neither of which really bother me), I left there with a 12.07 unit (July, 2012) and it (not surprisingly) works like a champ. Not a single drop since Thursday night.
All things considered, I'm content.
Thanks guys and gals would trying to get a new phone be better then swapping refurbished phones out everyday? I already have a new sim card. Does Verizon not know this is an issue they are telling me that it was a software problem and not a hardware problem. They claim that the Jelly Bean update will solve the issue.

It that's the case they need to release the OTA.
Anyway its hard to say its a software issue since most people seem to go through many phones before they get the right one. Verizon is probably blowing smoke..

Verizon - Why I loath thee - Warranty NOT HONORED

So....
In September I bought a month old used HTC One from someone on CG. Phone has been rock solid. No real issues, but I always had people on the other end complaining they could not hear me well.
Recently people on the other end cannot hear me at all, just static and only through the handset, works via bt and speakerphone. Thinking it was the RIL issue, I got a new SIM and nothing, restored to stock and wiped using factory recovery as @santod040 suggested and nothing. So I did what I would always do, relock the device, put it back to S-ON.
Well at this point I don't care, the HTC One has been on the VZW network less than a year. Who cares where I bought it from it should be under warranty. Well I guess Verizon is not ATT and HTC is not Apple. I said nothing, simply phone is unusable, already did all the stuff like factory resets and the such. Put in a warranty claim and done. Have done it before on VZW. They text me this morning that the phone is not under warranty because its a customer supplied device. I call and *****., they do not take. Tell me take it up with HTC. HTC turns and says its a software issue and it is known. We are working on an update. If you want a replacement talk to your carrier.
Call Verizon back and nothing. At this point I am livid. Does anyone know if there is anything else I can do? Honestly, my contract is up in 11 days and i have been contemplating leaving vzw for a while... maybe this is just the nail in the coffin...
Any suggestions appreciated. As an fyi, i found a couple of threads on the ATT side of the one where ATT did honor the warranty. F$#%ing verizon.... Rocking my old GNex in the meantime.

Have you tried to get a square trade warranty? Its something to look at when buying used phones. Verizon won't honor warranty on your phone since you did not get it through them. HTC should be the one that should replace your faulty device with a refurbished model. I would call back HTC and ask that you speak to a supervisor.
My Verizon store always has been friendly when I walked in with a new phone and needed it activated to replace the old one. The device usually has a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer.
HTC is the one who needs to replace the phone. You didn't buy it from VZW so they are playing their games. You are correct, HTC customer service is awful compared to Apple. All I can suggest is call HTC and explain that you can't wait for an update, you need your phone replaced now since it's less than a year old and still under warranty.

I agree Josh. But HTC is toeing the line that the warrantee is on the original owner not the device. So they are saying the same thing. Sucks to be you. I will call again and ask for a manager. Be clear that I have been loyal HTC owner. Have owned 2 incredibles and a rezound.

Yeah it should not matter how many owners. As long as it's still within the 1 year warranty period it should be honored. I would keep calling and demand nicely that you would like to speak to a supervisor.

If your contract is up in 11 days I'm surprised Verizon didn't try to deal with you as a customer retention issue and try to make you happy.

Verizon is just too big to care, they would be happy to get him on the edge plan and subsidize him another phone. If you do not have unlimited data through Verizon I would just look to get this fixed as soon as possible and probably switch. Only reason I still am with them, without a contract is because I was grandfathered into the unlimited data.

Like you I am grandfathered to unlimited data... That's the reason I bought the HTC off market. Honestly I am ready to buy a Nexus 5 and go to ATT., wish TMo had better service by me.
@mmuzzy, let me tell you I loved your stuff on the GNex(toro). I made it clear to them, honor the guarantee or run the risk of losing me in 11 days. It's obvious they do not care, I said as much and made it clear, if they don't care why should I. I'm the one losing the 350 i paid for this phone in Sept.
I will try HTC once more, give it the old college try...

I called back a few minutes ago and got HTC to honor it... I have to pay to send back and it will probably take a couple of weeks, but they are honoring it. so hopefully this will be for the better.
I'll post on the process.
Nice, glad you got them to fix it up. That's why I'm gonna keep my DNA as backup when the one gets rooted cuz without root the phone is not getting used.

FYI for future reference, I usually buy a phone on a credit card like American Express because they give you one extra year warranty and if there are any issues (like the one you mentioned), then they give you a full refund on the original purchase price. Like what other people said, try using the after market warranty...that will be your best bet at this point.

Just to clarify something....did you run the ruu? I see return to stock but not ruu specifically.

I swear, this is the exact post I would have wrote about a month ago. Out of the blue, I got a call and the person on the other end couldn't hear me very well, but the speaker phone worked fine. I also purchased mine used, so knew the warranty risks going in.
First, I took some canned air and blew out the little hole at the bottom of the phone, and into the speaker grills. I'm sure that you need to be careful doing this to avoid breaking anything. I also noticed that my speakers sounded like they were blown too, so I used an old trick I've used on other phones that seems to have fixed mine. The blown speaker sound is usually caused my tiny little metal/magnetic particles that accumulate on the speaker. I take a magnet from an old hard drive, and crank up the music and wipe the magnet over the speaker holes for a while, moving in all different directions. The vibrations from the music dislodge the particles, and the magnet picks them up.
So far so good, and I haven't had any issues since.
Good to know that HTC will honor the warranty on a second party phone.

Just a quick update. Finally heard back from HTC and they have shipped back the phone. It took forever because of the terrible northeast weather, sent it to them UPS Second Day using my corporate account. They are sending it back Fed Ex Ground. According to the girl, I am getting the same phone with a new Camera and new Microphones. So it was a hardware issue all along.
Hopefully they don't update it past the .15 so I can S-OFF and Unlock the moment I get it.

Turns out they did update the phone to 2.10.605.1... Damn HTC., I'm happy they did what they did but really wanted to S-OFF and Unlock...
Guess I need to start searching if I can S-OFF and Unlock with this version.

this is a great reason to keep insurance/extended warranty on your line. Yes you have to pay for it, but 1 call would have gotten you an exchange through verizon.
