I removed root from my device because I needed to take it to the sprint store. I could not get the toolkit to remove root I saw a option under SU to remove root and uninstall. Removing root via SU worked but now I can't re-add it. I've tried using the toolkit and I've tried CF auto root.
Apparently I screwed something up. Phone boots up and works just fine, just no root despite both methods claiming success.

Was hoping I could back up my data on a few games first. Is it possible to do that not rooted? And yes, I tried the root kit and it didn't let me access the game files.
Edit: Found the tool that allows me to back up my data. Now I have to get things set up so I can run it. Needed to do this anyway for programming.
Why unroot to take it to sprint? No one has ever cared at my store.

They refused to even touch mines rooted. Another store a little farther from me didn't care but I had already removed it.

Do you have stock recovery? How did you remove root
Sent from my t0ltespr
SuperSU let me do it by uninstalling it. It was the only way I knew how since the remove root tool didn't work.
So you should be able to install su from the market. Maybe I'm not understanding
Sent from my t0ltespr
You are understanding. That is how I thought it would work but when I reinstalled it told me it couldn't get root. I am unsure how but later on when I was trying to do a adb back up my device rooted itself. I'm thinking I'm going to take it back to stock and start over. Something strange happened with the way I removed root and it might give me problems in the future.
Though right now my device is working like it is suppose to. I just don't understand how it found root again. I swear I rebooted multiple times when I was trouble shooting it.

I play hardball at my store, if it shows modified or is rooted I wont touch it. Only because we get audited like a ***** and I've been charged back on by sprint for the simplest of **** and thats the majority of my bonus if I even manage enough profit to get one. Some stores can get away with it but normally I just take the customer aside and tell them to go home and unroot / triangle away and I'll do the exchange.

Yea, that is what he did for me too. Said he couldn't get caught touching it. Rules are rules. I asked them about last year and they didn't care so I didn't even think to unroot it first since I was running on a stock rom with root.
Next time I will make sure to go to the store completely stock. Safer for me and the employee that wants to help me.

Yeah I played it safe and went back to stock going back to the store to get some things sorted out.. . I went before checking out a phone for my girlfriend and the lady spotted my screen and said "We won't touch your device if it's rooted".. I just gave her the evil look

You will not be able to reroot without root, because you will not be able to set perms needed on the su binary.
To reroot, just do what you did to root it. Use Odin to flash the rooted recovery.img from Chainfire's CF Auto Root thread and boom, you're golden.

I figured I'd start a post for this since some people probably don't want to update after doing the root process, or maybe it would break root.
Is there a way to delete the OTA update off your phone and stop it from downloading it again and nagging you to update?
you could always root after updating since it obviously doesn't stop you from rooting

I know, but I had a hell of a time getting done so I don't want to go though it again. It took a long time to get adb running in recovery, after that it was cake.
Think I found it, did its like the droid. Dunno if it will stop the updates yet, but still need to find the file it downloaded.
Went to
/system/etc/security/
renamed otacerts.zip to otacerts.bak
Anyone install the OTA update after doing root? Did it break it?
I would do it but, I already done this twice now and it was hard as hell to get shell in recovery
Damn whenever I reboot it goes back to .zip

Unfortunately, even if it stuck, renaming otacerts.zip causes horrible battery life. It will continuously download the update, over, and over. It will download it, check the certs to see if its good. See its bad, go again, and again...

Will it kill my root, I got superuser.apk installed already and that functions properly, will the OTA mess up anything?
don't know. I don't know anyone else that is doing what you are doing.
Re-rooting isn't that hard. I've done it 10-12 times before there was a way to make it stick. Just a little typing assuming you get access.
Chances are you may re-root again anyways as they come out with better packages to do it.

I'm not rooted yet so I can't say for certain, but you can almost certainly shut down auto-OTA check by editing the build.prop and or userinit.sh in /system. Those two files control most of the automation on your Droid! Good luck, and if I helped you, send me a 16gig SDcard so I can root too
i just deleted the otacerts.zip in /system/etc/security/ and now it says my system is up to day in about phone.
I can confirm that running the OTA after rooting will temporarily break root. You *will* have to redo the adb in recovery > payload before your root apps or superuser.apk will work again.
The good news is that you *can* simply redo it. No big deal once you are comfortable getting into adb in recovery.

Still not sure why you went this way.
Unless you installed Superuser recently, you don't have that much "root" and will need to do it all over eventually again anyways.
It would be a lot simpler, if you did the OTA first, then re-root your phone using the newer instructions which give you a more rooted SAFER setup.
If you didn't do the newer Superuser, you now have a potentially vulnerable phone that an app can exploit because they can do su and not need approval first.

I tried rooting my phone since the day root was achieved using a few different sd cards I have and failed every time. Last night I decided to downgrade and got my phone rooted on the first try. I'm no noob. I've established ADB on my HTC Vogue which is a WinMo phone running Android, I've rooted a My Touch 3G and a Hero but until I downgraded my phone I couldn't get root. At least not with my sd cards so for me running the OTA then rooting is just not an option. I will just deal with it until NAND write access is achieved.

Some of us are not able to easily get into adb shell, often taking days of trying (hundreds of reboots). I was finally able to get in, and don't ever want to have to do it again. I have wifi tether working, and that is plenty for me until they come up with an easier way to get into adb shell in recovery. I am assuming this guy is in the same boat (as far as how hard it is to get into adb shell).
It won't matter soon. Wait until the Unrevoked custom recovery comes out in a few days and then you can find a nice custom rom that won't bug you.

Doesn't matter now. You should be able to start flashing ROMs soon with the Recovery Reflash tool from Unrevoked http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
Those Unrevoked guys are really hooking us up
I too had an incredibly hard time getting into the shell... I finally down graded, was able to get in (I don't' think that got me in, as it all ended up in being timing that I just had to get).
anyways, i've now installed the unrevoked recovery tool and updated to the latest clockwork via rom manager.
Anyways... that nag screen is getting old, so which rom are people installing on their systems that's getting rid of the nag / is an updated one?

Good morning all. I unRooted my phone by running the RUU file on my computer with HTC Sync running, and it worked just fine. The only problem that I have now is that my Market does not work. I will try to download an app, new or previously purchased, and it will not download them. It says "Starting Download" and a few seconds later it will pop up in my Notification Bar that the download was unsuccessful.
I used the RUU posted in *OFFICIAL* RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.29.651.5_Radio_2.15. 00.09.01_NV_1.77_CNV_rel by Whosdaman.
Am I missing something? Should I try it again with an older RUU file?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I posted in the wrong forum, please let me know. I figured it was relevant here, as it has to do with unRooting and such. LOL
settings - applications - market
then clear cache
I tried that trick already. Also, when I unRooted, I had the 1.8ish version of the Market. I tried all the tricks to get the updater to automatically update the Market, but it never did. I resorted to finding a vending.apk and doing it myself. I'm not sure what this does, but I also did the dialing of ##786#.
Sorry for leaving that out of the OP, it's been a long night at work and I'm ready for sleepy time. I try my hardest to figure things out beforehand, because I don't want to bother y'all with piddly little questions. I just couldn't find the answer for myself this time.

Hello IAmTheTrueUI, I have a question for you. What method did you use to root your EVO and using this RUU did you get s-on in your hboot screen? I rooted using unrevoked 3.2.1 and it gave me the permanent s-off. I also used the RUU to unroot(just want to be able to in case I need to take it into Sprint) and everything was stock except I still had s-off. I've been reading about the s-on tool from unrevoked, but it says you may lose root forever and I don't want to try it if I won't be able to root again.
This is for anyone that would like to answer: If I use the son tool from unrevoked can I get root back? Has anyone tried it and been successful in rerooting their phone? Thanks all and much appreciated.

yes i have mutiple times after you flash the son tool you can just run unrevoked again and gain root once again
EDIT: this is what it says verbatim on the unrevoked wiki "Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update "

No, no I did not. I didn't think I had to unless I used the unrEVOked Forever method. Am I still able to do this if need be?
I just unrooted yesterday using the s-on tool and PC36IMG to bring to stock and it worked great with no issues. I just decided to go stock for a while until the new update rolls out. As matter of fact that was my second time using that method because I wanted to be sure it would work if I ever had to bring my phone in to Sprint. Good luck getting it fixed!
I truly hate to ask, but could you explain that method to me? I'm about ready to Root my phone again and just flash a ROM that just looks like a stock ROM.

Don't worry about the market. They're not going to use it for anything in the store and you can always reroot and get it back into working order.
It's actually good that you leave it look not personalized. Just last week I walked in with my phone overheating and rebooting. After their guy spent an hour looking at my phone, he said he could hold onto it even longer and "probably fix it" by doing a factory data reset. You'll be able to sidestep this by just telling them that you already did and that's why it looks like it does now. In fact, you could actually try that now to see if it makes your market problem go away.

I used the method in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141
There is a method there if you did not use Unrevoked but what I did was just download both of the files listed there to the root of my SD card>booted into recovery and flashed the s-on zip>used the power off option then booted into hboot and saw it said s-on>allowed it to load the 2.2 PC36IMG and it was done. I ran the lasted update after it was completed. I'm no expert so I hope this was helpful for you.
So I'm getting my number change.
Do I need to unroot for sprint to do it or can I stay rooted.
Thanks in advance
I'm guessing that you are on Sprint. I think that you can just call them and get your number changed, in that case I don't see why that you would have to, but if you need to take it in to get them to do something then that might be a different story. I think that they are required to take a note on your file if you are rooted or not now, but I'm not sure. I do have to say though that it is not hard to root again after you unroot your evo now. I have had to do this with a RUU in the past because of getting bricked for a few hours. My advice if you go in back up using titanium backup and unroot for the duration of the trip. That might save your ass in the long run. lol )

Then I don't see where you would have a problem with just calling them without unrooting. Granted if you still have doubts unroot anyways. I don't want to be the person who says yes you can leave rooted and then they tell you that your insurance is not valid any longer... lol. leave rooted at your own risk, but I don't think that it would be a problem. Hit thanks if this helped.
You need a stock Evo-based Sense rom if activation requires you to access menus through the dialer. Just to be safe, I'd do a nandroid backup and flash the stock rooted rom. When you're finished, just nandroid restore and you'll be good to go.

Yeah, you should be okay leaving rooted especially if you're doing it over the phone. I've had to bring my phone into sprint before for speaker problem, stopped there on my way to Walmart a few days ago, didn't even think about it being rooted until they already had it in back fixing it, but they brought it back up all fixed up, and I still have my insurance, and the store manager asked me what I did to get my phone looking so cool lol... Regardless of whether he ultimately wants to root or not - make sure that even if it's remotely on the radar that he unlocks the BOOTLOADER as soon as he gets the phone.
Unlocking the bootloader wipes the ENTIRE phone (SD card partition and all) so it's something to do before anything else.
With the ability to subsequently make backups, rooting can easily come later.
It's rather simple:
If you don't know why you want root, you don't need root.

I was going to say the same.
If he doesn't want/know then he SHOULDN'T cause he could end up with a bricked phone.
There's absolutely no reason to try to convince your friend, you're doing a disservice.
Murphy's law says he'll end up bricking it.
Unless you enjoy modding and willing to take the risk, let them use it stock - it's far more stable anyway.

My thoughts exactly!
If your friend doesn't want it, he didn't need it. Eot.
And since you seem confused and mixing terms.... You can still be on stock while rooted.
You can even run a custom firmware without being rooted/having root.
Rooted merely means having local admin rights on the OS you are currently running. Custom firmware or not us entirely unrelated.
On most Samsung phones you don't even need to root to load custom ROMs, because they have open bootloaders. They're is no real relation between these terms which you are mixing.

You can root the factory image so he'll still be stock with root. It'd best to root in case he wants future access for whatever, for example titanium backup would let him backup all his data, needs root. There are a milkion reasons to need root for very basic things.

But if the guy doesn't want to use any of those things, there's no need to root it in the first place. If he doesn't see the value in it right now theres no need to force him into it. Rooting because you think he'll want it later in the future makes no sense.

this was my thought too!
At least let him figure out how to do it himself. If he figures it out. It might be for him. Let him do it via fast boot commands. Not one click.
I remember fist time rooting. I only had to press "root" in an app, and I ended up messing my sgs i9000 up completely. I had to learn everything the hard way. The right way. You should never do anything to your phone, unless you know how to get back to where you were.
Ok where do I start, oh yeah here; I've been wanting to unroot my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 for the longest, but I never knew how. Main reason why? Because I want to get my phone fixed from AT&T, but as we all know, this will "void" the warranty. Anyways, my goal really is to simply just get rid of the modified status thing in the setting so they can't see it has been rooted. So on one glorious day, I decided to listen to little brother (which I never do) and he told me to go into SuperSU and press unroot or something like that, to "unroot" your phone because "he did it" and it "worked". Now it kind of made since when he told me to do that, though something told me it wouldnt be that simple just to press unroot and it does all the magic for you. So now im in a pickle. When I did that, it uninstalled SuperSU in a since, and now when I downloaded it back from the play store, it says every time,"there is no su binary installed and supersu cannot install it unroot". From what I have been reading, this is a huge problem when it comes to using Triangle away, which I need to reset this modified thingy in the settings. Also, I download a root checker app or whatever its called, and it says I don't have root access. AHHHHH!!!!! Can SOMEBODY, ANYBODY help me?! Im a noob to this Android stuff (Been #TeamiOS 4 years straight). So please speak english when explaining what to do.
