[Q] Do I need to unroot - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm getting my number change.
Do I need to unroot for sprint to do it or can I stay rooted.
Thanks in advance

I'm guessing that you are on Sprint. I think that you can just call them and get your number changed, in that case I don't see why that you would have to, but if you need to take it in to get them to do something then that might be a different story. I think that they are required to take a note on your file if you are rooted or not now, but I'm not sure. I do have to say though that it is not hard to root again after you unroot your evo now. I have had to do this with a RUU in the past because of getting bricked for a few hours. My advice if you go in back up using titanium backup and unroot for the duration of the trip. That might save your ass in the long run. lol )

Then I don't see where you would have a problem with just calling them without unrooting. Granted if you still have doubts unroot anyways. I don't want to be the person who says yes you can leave rooted and then they tell you that your insurance is not valid any longer... lol. leave rooted at your own risk, but I don't think that it would be a problem. Hit thanks if this helped.

You need a stock Evo-based Sense rom if activation requires you to access menus through the dialer. Just to be safe, I'd do a nandroid backup and flash the stock rooted rom. When you're finished, just nandroid restore and you'll be good to go.

Number swaps don't require dialer codes. Only a profile update but yes you need to be on a sense ROM to do this.

Yeah, you should be okay leaving rooted especially if you're doing it over the phone. I've had to bring my phone into sprint before for speaker problem, stopped there on my way to Walmart a few days ago, didn't even think about it being rooted until they already had it in back fixing it, but they brought it back up all fixed up, and I still have my insurance, and the store manager asked me what I did to get my phone looking so cool lol... I took a risk and told him it was rooted, so I know they deffinitly now know...and he asked me to root his lol.

Will I have to Unroot to recieve the OTA upate?

Just wondering if my Incredible will be able to receive the update while I am rooted.
Also can somebody walk me through the unrooting process. I saw someone say just "wipe the phone" and while I understand what that means, I just don't know how to do it myself.
Any info on either of these 2 subjects would be tremendously appreciated.
Thanks!
I'm wondering this too. Or will we just lose root if we apply it on a rooted phone.
This link will direct you to a tutorial on unrooting.
http://androidforums.com/all-things...ideo-howto-unroot-incredible-downgrading.html
From what I understand, you will need to unroot for update.
I assume the community normally releases versions of the updates that don't require this?
U cannot receive an official update unless u have the stock recovery. If u used unrevoked tool u have clockwork. In other words u can receive it if u r rooted but only if u have stock recovery.

OK, so since I rooted the "old-fashioned" manual way I should be able to receive OTA's?
I did end up unrooting last night using the video by mejdam on Youtube. Boy, I wish I had known that I didn't need to do that! Now I have a lot of work to do! I spent all night restoring my apps that I backed-up with Astro. Thank god for that at least. Next time I will take screen shots of my home pages before I wipe the phone. I had everything how I liked it
I thought that the OTA update after the downgrade was the one to give me 720p, etc. I was SORELY disappointed when I found out it wasn't. Basically I just did all of this for nothing yay. Now to come full circle by getting rooted again!
What a life I lead
Am I getting this right? I rooted over a month ago the more manual way before unrevoked3 was running.
Is it possible to root and still have stock recovery?
Also does anyone else have an opinion on my initial question? I really don't feel like unrooting again...
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
If you simply wait, after the OTA is actually official, the unrevoked team will incorporate the new stuff into their painless root tool and you will be able to safely update and maintain root access at the same time.
You don't need to do anything before then except have some patience.

You didn't have to go through all of that! I don't know how you missed this tip, because I swear it's in like every post about messing around with stuff after rooting: TITANIUM BACKUP! There's a free version and it allows you to backup ALL of your apps to the exact settings you had setup (something you can't do while not rooted) and then whether you un-root, install a rom, whatever - all you have to do is run the batch "restore all my apps" option and voila! they're all back like they never left.
Search for a guide on how to use it, it's "somewhat" confusing at first - but not bad and I know most of the people with rooted Inc's swear by it.
Hey thanks for the recommendation, Milk dude. I haven't been checking the forum as much as I need to lately. My office is sweltering even at night so I do most of my forum browsing on my Inc. Anyway I will have to give titanium backup a try. Thanks again.

Taking a rooted phone to a sprint store

Verizon won't authenticate my phone when roaming. I've tried to update my PRI a few dozen times, but no dice. I'm on 1.34 still. Tech support couldn't do anything for me on their end and told me to take in to a sprint store to update my PRI manually.
My phone is heavily themed, I'm planning to flash over a rom that looks stock. I'll uninstall any root programs. How thorough are employees in sprint stores at checking out phones? What happens if they see that your phone is rooted?
I'm curious because I assume they'll go into recov mode and see my phone isn't stock
Nandroid. Flash stock Eclair. Get your phone fixed. Root again.

It is un-rootable if you root it. You use unrEVOked Forever to root Froyo, which is permanent as far as I know.
yeah, just go stock and they will never know. People have said oh, they can tell, and while, I'm sure somehow they could, they won't. I've using android for over a year, and every time I have a problem I flash stock, with a fresh wipe, take it to sprint, get it fixed, reload backup and i'm back up as if nothing happened. So to answer, just flash stock before taking it in and you will be fine.

Does anyone know when Gingerbread is coming out for the incredible? Will it unroot our phones; if so, will we be able to re-root it?

"Rumor" is sometime this summer at end of Q2. I won't unroot your phone because an OTA update wont take on your unrooted phone. You'll either have to unroot it at that time or wait for one of the Dev's to figure out a way to manually update the phone using the RUU.
And when this gingerbread ota drops anyone know if its gonna have sense 2.0?

Well we can at least expect original sense considering its an HTC device right? They aren't just gonna throw us into the dark without sense UI?

Yup we will get HTC Sense UI with our gingerbread update but what version of sense all depends on HTC and what the HTC Droid Incredible is actually capable off but as we have seen sense 2.0 and 2.1 have been ported to the htc droid incredible but with those sense ports many things are taken out of it by the DEVS to make it fit the required 256mb file size to actually load it on to the INC. We can only hope now.
When I unroot my phone, will I lose all my data?

Dont you guys mean sense 3.0? IIRC we already have Sense 2.0.
I think I read that tenatively speaking, Incredibles won't get Sense 3.0...the hardware's supposedly not up to it.

No matter what, even if you're guaranteed to not lose anything, use Titanium and do a backup of everything in Batch Mode. It's better to be safe than sorry.... Save a copy to your PC of the backup just in case the SD Card decides to take a nose dive.
If you do a RUU Recovery, YES, You'll lose everything. Haven't unrooted as it wasn't necessary as the super smart Devs figured a way to update without unrooting... even kept S-Off

I use My Backup Root. I thought apps that backup your data only work on rooted phones. That being said, if I back it up the data would be useless until we can root again, correct? There's no other application that will allow me to restore a backup with out having root access?

Not that I know of as a lot of the data is collected from internal storage.
Key for us is patience, enjoy testing out everything you feel comfortable trying and enjoy the ride. I wouldn't stress the root issue as these Devs are some of the smartest people around it would seem as they keep pulling new tricks outa their bag every day.
When the Nov OTA update came around so many people were stressing going back to factory so they could get it right then and there..... a whole lot of Bloatware really all it was. For those that had patience, we were rewarded with the Devs knowledge as they figured it out again:
http://solo.dc3.com/dinc/
So, we got the update, didn't lose root, and S stayed OFF.... Those who weren't patient had to wait for Unrevoked to figure root out again, this time for two different screens.

Buy a scratch & win lotto ticket. If you lose, go ahead and flash.
As of right now some simple steps would be being in the OTA update UCLG1 having a SV05 and having TWRP (team win recovery project) instead of CWM. The number of users experiencing this issue is very low. If your in the 30 day return period I advise doing some testing because its less of a hassle going to a store for an exchange instead of sending it away.

Its a issue affecting a small amount of people there's a very high chance that you might not get it. I was scared to but I said screw it I'm going to find out if my phone has it, if it does ill just exchange it better now than later on when my return period is up.
No one with baseband version of UCLG1 has lost it neither with TWRP and UCLG1.
If you wanna try it download the OTA from your phone(using software update on device itself). Root using no trip method and instead pushing CWM use TWRP. Flash and see what happens.

+1 Definitely the easiest way.
I was scared too man. I really was. This thing cost me an arm and a leg, its like the nicest thing I own and I never want to put it in dangers way. Plus if I had to pay out of pocket, I wouldn't be able to replace it for 2 months, and it would eat up all my pleasure money.
But you know what, I hate touchwiz. I hate the menus, I hate its goofy sounds and stuff. The stock keyboard is ridiculous. The battery life was really good though. I know I could of changed the launcher and some other stuff but I am really into running my devices lean and mean. This is just a thing, a mentality I guess.
I decided that at best I can provide some information to the community and possibly work with other people and get this figured out. Everyone being scared is going to ruin the test pool because we don't get the scope of info we need to really get analytical about it. At worst, well I have documented everything I've done so far and can reproduce any partition pre-flashing needed. If we all end up with phones with imeis missing in the first 30 days, and all take them back to att because "I don't know I just don't get 4g anymore", we can possibly force att and Samsung to look more in-depth And possibly give a fix.
If anything early is the time to flash if you are looking to get your hands dirty, and be fine with learning some things along the way. I spent a good 2 weeks just learning everything I could about the issue, my phone, just got real intimate with the thing XD. Once I felt comfortable that I have done everything in my power to prepare for the worse, I rooted with the "no trip" method and then installed busy box, and then goomanager from the play store. From there just go to options and then hit open recovery and it automatically detects your device and installs.
Just remember, this is a brand new device running brand new software. All of this is experimental and the fact any of it works, let alone as well as it does is amazing. I'm running aokp rc2 right now and its pretty impressive. There's some weird haptic bugs and I'm noticing that my signal strength is not even close to what it was stock. This is disappointing and o don't understand why this is. As far as I understand I'm still on the same modem? All I've done is flashed aokp and cm10 ROMs. I'm getting about 107db right now and it keeps switching from HSDPA to HSDPA +. So when I load a page, it will be slow till the HSDPA + kicks in, then it will go back down to HSDPA and loose signal strength, almost like it "cranks up" when data is being used? Anyways yea its fun and I totally understand why you want to, but bit expect it to be like 1000x better right now. But if you are down contribute either info, donate to devs, try things, send files/screenshots then come join the fun!

I'm holding out on AOKP until it comes out of preview builds, don't like being a guinea pig.
My experience:
Used the root without tripping flashcounter method.
Used adb to install CWM (the touch version for AT&T, not the teamepic one)
Have flashed custom ROMs, Kernels, and mods.
Absolutely no problems.
Just make sure to download the .zip files that are specific to your device, make nandroids, and have fun!

I made a topic earlier in the international thread about a hiss/static noise problem and a helper told me to flash a new rom as my current baseband is old and he had problems with this baseband/firmware.
I'm so confused, ROMS are just different type of "OS" right? I mean if I want to officially update my firmware I gotta go through the Samsung procedure? (If I update while rooted, I'll lose root right?).

Roms can update your firmware it all depends on what stock version their based on.
Most of the time you will find a root injected rom lets say its le9 with this you would just have to flash it through cwm/twrp. Instant firmware update without loosing root.
Then flash any rom based on it.
Plus theres a niffty app called OTA root keeper. Get OTA without loosing root.
Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on something.

Removed root and now I can't re-add it

I removed root from my device because I needed to take it to the sprint store. I could not get the toolkit to remove root I saw a option under SU to remove root and uninstall. Removing root via SU worked but now I can't re-add it. I've tried using the toolkit and I've tried CF auto root.
Apparently I screwed something up. Phone boots up and works just fine, just no root despite both methods claiming success.

Was hoping I could back up my data on a few games first. Is it possible to do that not rooted? And yes, I tried the root kit and it didn't let me access the game files.
Edit: Found the tool that allows me to back up my data. Now I have to get things set up so I can run it. Needed to do this anyway for programming.

So you should be able to install su from the market. Maybe I'm not understanding

You are understanding. That is how I thought it would work but when I reinstalled it told me it couldn't get root. I am unsure how but later on when I was trying to do a adb back up my device rooted itself. I'm thinking I'm going to take it back to stock and start over. Something strange happened with the way I removed root and it might give me problems in the future.
Though right now my device is working like it is suppose to. I just don't understand how it found root again. I swear I rebooted multiple times when I was trouble shooting it.

I play hardball at my store, if it shows modified or is rooted I wont touch it. Only because we get audited like a ***** and I've been charged back on by sprint for the simplest of **** and thats the majority of my bonus if I even manage enough profit to get one. Some stores can get away with it but normally I just take the customer aside and tell them to go home and unroot / triangle away and I'll do the exchange.

Yea, that is what he did for me too. Said he couldn't get caught touching it. Rules are rules. I asked them about last year and they didn't care so I didn't even think to unroot it first since I was running on a stock rom with root.
Next time I will make sure to go to the store completely stock. Safer for me and the employee that wants to help me.

Glad you were able to get everything worked out and root again though :good: sprint can be bad at times
Yeah I played it safe and went back to stock going back to the store to get some things sorted out.. . I went before checking out a phone for my girlfriend and the lady spotted my screen and said "We won't touch your device if it's rooted".. I just gave her the evil look

You will not be able to reroot without root, because you will not be able to set perms needed on the su binary.
To reroot, just do what you did to root it. Use Odin to flash the rooted recovery.img from Chainfire's CF Auto Root thread and boom, you're golden.
