Any consequences other than losing root? I'm not too concerned about getting it right this second since I know these devs at xda will cook somethin nice up in a few days. Just want to know my options. THanks

It should just flash the new ROM. Yes, you'll lose root and it probably replaces the bootloader so you can't boot into recovery either, but it should be just another stock phone after that.
So I am rooted and go to load up the update and it puts me in the spot with the android guy and the /!\ what gives...

hmmm yup I have the same root method - great I thought it would just write over...
Well we all know by now once your phone is rooted you cannot do any ota, you are much better of waiting a day or two to get the rooted version from one of the dev.

some of us dont care about loosing root, and as far as i knew i could at anytime upgrade to something sprint put out and all that would happen is i would loose root.
I'm pretty pissed...I thought that an OTA would override the unrEVOked 3 since it's not even full root. Now I gotta figure out what to do next. There is another thread here that describes a method to UNROOT. But I'm not sure if it works with UNREVOKED 3

This is my position aswell. Im sure i read pleanty of people saying unrevoked would have no effect on future updates, and the worst that would happen was loosing root.
eventually all the developers will migrate to froyo as a base so you can wait or you can unroot like me and install the OTA with no prob. When I installed the OTA it kinda installed like a regular app...did not go to bootloader or nothing like that. Then it just rebooted into froyo...did not lose anything such as installed apps or user data etc. It's all good eitherway you choose in my opinion. Keep root and wait...Unroot/OTA and wait...it will only be a short time like almost already and full froyo with root is a done deal...

I had the june update so i was 1.47 but either way this is the program to use...

This in my opinion is the way to go...make sure you use the 1.47 one and you are good to go...then get the OTA FROYO...I did it this way.
I had Unrevoked3 on mine for wifi tethering..and did the manual leaked update (update.zip on sd card etc) and it worked just peachy, if you wanted to go that route. I did lost my root but none of my data (even superusers is still installed lol)
From what I read there isnt much of a difference between the .3 and .6 versions anyway
Maybe if you did that, then waited to see what HTC comes up with for us "early adopters" to get us up to speed lol

If you stay on the stock ROM you should still be able to get ota's but you might loose your root. The cooked ROMs will be updated usually before the official updates are even rolled out, and most likely tweaked and improved. I wouldn't even worry about sprints updates. As far as choosing a ROM, just read through the development forum and read what the ROM offers and the comments through the thread of users reporting bugs (if any) and opinions of performance. Baked snack, CM, and fresh seem to be the most popular and stable. Start with one of those. I used calkulin and frost, both work well too if you like vanilla Android, fresh was the only sense ROM I used and it was very nice. Its all about what look you want and customization. Thats the beauty of Android.
There are plenty of tutorials on the process, read the useful threads and links thread. Thats a good place to start. When ROMs get updated just flash over the previous unless the dev says a wipe is needed, which is rare.
I mean I love my sense. I can't go on without the beautiful widgets it comes with.
Plus the upgrade they're doing for sense is coming out soon.
But I need to know if a custom recovery is the same as a custom Rom.
I am thinking of doing Unrevoked because its the only one I know that does 2.2 root. Please give me links!

Custom recovery will either be "R.A." or "ClockworkMod." They are a little different from each other. People usually use R.A. They say that clockworkmod doesn't delete cache right, but I personally use clockwork. What a recovery is, is a menu outside the phones system that allows you to install flashable zips. It also allows you to wipe anything, format anything and create & restore nandroid back ups.
There are tons of Roms. Roms are the system of your phone. Usually flashed from the SD card.

The one thing i have seen is that if you root and use unrevoked forever then you can't accept OTA's either, i have seen this with alot of people including myself, not sure why, but you can download the OTA, but it will not upack, literally, as you start it just freeze's up within the first mintues, and no matter how many times you try, it won't take.

Hmm... I haven't heard of that but don't doubt it.
The thing is, the devs here usually get their hands on OTAs before they are rolled out, then they make them better and package them into their ROMs. I see no reason to even care about receiving OTAs at all, tbqh
Well i was reading about it and from what I gathered up.
It tells me that if you have a custom Rom you aren't able to accept OTAs,I don't wanna manually update my phone. I don't even know how.
But I need to know of a custom recovery with disable me from getting OTAs,help?
If I should use any custom recovery or any team who should I get my root from? I have a unrooted 2.2 sense.

Referring to your original post here, I wouldn't root until you are fully comfortable with getting down and dirty with your phone. You say you don't want to or even know how to manually update your phone, well that is Android 101. If you aren't fully familiar with everything that rooting entails (custom recoveries, kernels, ROMs, SU permissions) then you need to keep reading. I spent weeks reading everything I could find before I rooted my phone and I suggest doing the same so you don't potentially fark things up.
Read the wiki, read through the rooting threads in development and really try and build a full understanding of what you're doing before you make the leap.
Well I've rooted my g1 way back then. But I know its not the same concept anymore,but they really never had an update it was just 1.6 so yeah.
I just want OTAs still.

I agree with _MetalHead_ . You really need to read more on rooting, ROMS (and in the process, you'll learn about Nandroid!) before proceeding. I also spent weeks reading and then I didn't go full root - just enough to get wireless tether. Then, I read some more. There are some incredibly helpful people here as well as some incredibly rude people.
While unrevoked can get you started, learn adb and get comfortable pulling and pushing apks. Get very comfortable with Nandroid because it's going to save you.
My lessons learned are 1) NEVER accept an OTA update because it can take devs a long while to gain root, and 2) be patient and NEVER pull the battery while the Evo is doing something - like updating.
I use apk files already and unrooted.

A nandroid backup can be done from the recovery screen and it essentially backs up your phone EXACTLY as it is when you run it. So if you want to change something, you nandroid backup (which includes contacts, themes, settings, everything) and if your change doesn't work out, you can boot into recovery and restore your nandroid backup.

Just did a little research. The reason why the updates won't take is because of the custom recovery. You need to flash a stock recovery in order to accept updates. It's on Unrevoked's website.
I use apk files already and unrooted.

Google is your friend. Nandroid is a way to backup and restore your phone.
I already posted the link to the wiki, that is the first place you should start. Next, read through a lot of rooting threads in the development forum here on xda. If you still have questions use the forum's search tool and use google. You gotta do the legwork.

I rooted my wife dinc but she didn't like it so I went ahead and put her stock rom back on. She is receiving the Nov. Update regularly and wants it but doesn't want to wipe the phone. My question is..of I turn s back on will it allow the update ? If not... is there a way to unroot without wiping? Please...I need the nagging to stop lol . Thanks for the help.

If you search the threads in here you'll see one way to stop the nagging is to modify a system file (changing some text). But you'll have to use root explorer to make the modification because it has to be done with root access. I've done it and it works... I just don't remember where the file is at off the top of my head.

I updated two DINCs yesterday. They were rooted, s-off, stock Froyo.
I followed the instructions (imagine that!), applied the Nov OTA update, re-rooted, and re-installed SU.
Nothing was wiped from the phone. Probably because it is an update. A patch. Not a new version of the OS.
Same as Ed. Just finished today cause i was getting annoyed with the update asking to install all the time. There is no wipe as it is a simple update.
Ok so if I follow those directions it will unroot the phone?

Hmmm... My post says to read the instructions which includes re-rooting the phone. The instructions also mention the step to take to re-root. the phone.
If the instructions tell you how to re-root, then, yes, the logical conclusion is that your phone will get un-rooted by the update.
But if you actually follow the instructions, that one simple step will re-root your phone.

adb is needed only if you have removed the "crapware", because you need to re-install it before running the update.
I FOLLOWED the instructions. Updated and re-rooted two stock Froyo, rooted phones. And did not use adb. I don't have it installed either.

Step 10 is a list of things you see/do as the OTA update runs.
a. through f. lists things that you see on the screen. Just sit and watch...
g. tells you to wait 30 seconds. So you wait 30 seconds.
It then tells you to unlock the screen. So you unlock the screen.
It then tells you to skip the keyboard tutorial. So you tap the "SKIP" button.
h. tells you what you will see next
i. you only need to do if you run WiFi and it doesn't connect. That is, if you normally have WiFi running and it fails to connect at this point, turn it off then turn it on. It should then connect. I don't run WiFi on my phone. I mean, what's the point in that?
j. tells you how you can check in Settings to see that the update has run.
If you would have read Step 11 yesterday afternoon, you would not have had to ask if this process unroots the phone.
Please. Relax. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. Then, if you want to apply the update, follow the instructions.

And all my wifes set ups , sync and other stuff she did to personalize will not be wiped by doing so, correct ? (Just clarifying so I can do this with confidence for her)

We lost no data. I did not lose any messages or email. All my settings were retained. Did not have to restore any apps or anything.
That being said, I do not know what all you have set up on your wife's phone so I cannot, from this great a distance tell you that EVERYTHING will be left intact.
Your best bet would be to take backups before proceding with any updates. Just makes plain sense.

Steps 13 through 15 put the ClockworkMod recovery back on the phone.
With the non-standard recovery there, future updates will be blocked as well.
Look, at this point, I would highly recommend some reading into just what rooting is, what it does, its implications, the effects of s-on/s-off (and why you would want it one way or the other) before you procede any further.
As I stated earlier, the instructions are for a DINC that is rooted, s-off, running stock Froyo. And they guide you through applying the update, re-rooting, and re-installing SU.
I am beginning to think that this is not what you are looking to do.
She just has colors for handcent re syncing Facebook. I just don't need to hear it from her cuz when I rooted it for her she didn't like the fact that she had to re do all that . I know what rooting and all that is. Just in rooting I don't want her to have to redo the syncing for Facebook and reset the colors for handcent . Thanks for the help though

You don't really need s-on for anything. Unless you want to remove all traces of being rooted.
For that, I would suggest you look through the threads here that deal with rooting and s-on/s-off.

I have a Rooted EVO with the stock ROM. I really want to update to Gingerbread but am very confused. I do not want to lose my rooted status and I do not want a ROM with a bunch of MODS. I just want a simple stock ROM with Gingerbread and Root access. Is this possible. I am confused by everything I read and do not want to brick my phone.
Will updating my phone with the OTA while Rooted ruin my phone? Will I be able to keep my root status?

Lol wow dude you're gonna get flammed but ya just download one of the stock roms on here there are about 4 of them posted with the new gb update from sprint. Just download and flash via recovery also update your radio, Wimax, etc its pretty easy

There are two different rooted versions (with very minor modifications) of the new stock Gingerbread ROM (anything with the labeled "Sense" is based on HTC's ROM's, though some of them are based on ROM's from other phones), both on the first page of threads in this forum. Look for "4.22.651.2" in the thread subject--and yes, those will keep your phone rooted and S-OFF. I believe there's a third thread with a method of updating without a flash, and yet another with minor modifications to the stock ROM (the Titanium-X ROM).
By contrast, anything that says "AOSP" is based on the Android Open Source Project, and therefore quite different from an HTC ROM, though all functions work on many of them (but there is some debate on how well the various radios work on AOSP ROM's).

Do you have the latest recovery installed of RA or Clockwork ?
I have clockwork i believe. I just did what I think is a nandroid backup, I went into recovery and did backup.
That's always smart so you are doing good so far. What you want to do now is download the zip file and place it on your SD card. You can download it directly on your phone if its easier for you (wifi recommended). Just follow the link posted by dodgerbluehero above and I would recommend starting with the odexed version.
Now go into recovery and choose flash from zip - then - choose zip on SD card. Navigate to the downloaded file and hit the power button to select it and again to confirm. It can take a few minutes to write the files so just leave it alone. It will tell you when it's done and you can reboot.
These instructions are from my memory but should be pretty close. You would typically want to wipe but the dev says not to worry about it if you are coming from a stock rom.
Give it a shot, you will be fine. Pm me if you have any questions because the mods will probably close this thread soon. Good luck!

what confuses me is where it says "firmware". Do I still have to install that or just the ROM??
The firmware is optional. You can install the rom and then decide if you want to flash the radio as well afterwards.
After you flash, the first boot sometimes takes a little while. Just let it do it's thing. You will be happily surprised how easy this actually is to do.

but what benefit does it have? is the radio i have not as good?
Some people get better results with signal/3g speeds/wimax. The consensus seems to be that it varies by phone and area.
You can flash the rom without also flashing the radio and be just fine. Stop worrying and take the leap.
On the other hand this may not be for you.

Well I appreciate the time you spent explaining it. I just don't have the money to buy a new phone if I brick it. I rooted my phone on my own but never did any rom updates. I am going to try it once it downloads. Thank you again.
Oh one more thing, be sure that your phone has plenty of charge to make it through the flash and restart or that could lead to bricking your phone.

Agreed, at this point in the game, that's about the only way to brick your phone. It's one of my personal favorite little jokes when clockworkmod asks me are you sure? This cannot be undone! Darn near everything can be fixed thanks to this awesome community!

Thanks to everyone for keeping this going it has helped me so much. One quick question I have installed the ROM and the firmware but I see in the apps things like the blockbuster app and wanted to remove it. I cant seem to uninstall it so I thought it wasn't rooted properly. I tried using Unrevoked3 on it but it failed stating
Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?
am I forgetting something simple or do I have to try and downgrade the firmware?

I think I recall seeing something about that error on the unrevoked website. I'm out and about right now but I'll check on it when I get home, but in the meantime if you wanna do some digging, I'd start there
My fiancee's EVO 4g was in desperate need of replacing, so we went and got new phones. She had been playing this damned Smurf Village game for about a year and a half, and I thought I'd pull a white knight -- root the phone, back it up on Titanium, transfer the backup to the new phone, root that, restore. She insists she's okay starting over, but I thought it'd be a nice gesture. Rooting the new phone (LG Optimus G) was a piece of cake. The EVO 4g took me some time to get it to work ...
In my poor attempts at multitasking, I didn't do a nandroid backup and completely overlooked where it said it would restore to factory settings.
Is all lost? I did a search on it while it was plugged into the PC as an external drive and found a bunch of (edit: Smurf-related) files, so I feel like the data might still be there.
If not, it's all good. I learned from my mistake (I mean, c'mon, big_onion, every damn set of instructions says "make a nandroid backup") but if there's any way to get it back it might make her day.
Data restoration aside, after flashing Superuser, I still can't get TitaniumBackup to obtain superuser privileges. Any ideas what I might've done wrong? The method I used was to unlock the bootloader via HTC site, then flashboot recovery, then flash superuser. The app is there, but it doesn't seem to issue SU rights to TitaniumBackup.
Best way to gain root is to flash any custom rom here on xda. Unless it is a completely stock rom it is rooted and works without any issues. I rooted my second og evo a few days ago and had the same issue with the stock rom. After flashing a custom rom I had full root access.
Now as far as data goes most apps store that on the sdcard. I suggest installing the game on the new phone then power off and insert your old sdcard into the new phone. Hopefully it will use the old data and return your wife's game to her last state and make you look like a champ.

You don't root android by flashing a rooted custom rom on a non root phone.
Rooting a phone must be done via a PC there is no other way.
Some stock roms ARE root.
The reason you had problems is because you were root and tried to install a non-root stock rom, if you would have installed a rooted stock rom you would of had no problems.

Umm root is done by rom. Unlocking bootloader is the part done by pc.
You can be unlocked without root but can not root until you are unlocked. Rooting is the granting of admin rights to the user's apps.
I did not have an issue because I installed a non rooted rom. The rom was already on the phone which is the same spot the op is in. He is unlocked but not rooted. The htcdev unlock does not grant root rights to the current stock rom. Also the flashable zip did not grant the rom root rights.

You don't go from not being rooted to being rooted by flashing a custom rom on the phone from the recovery menu, unless you accidentally flashed a non-root rom while you were already root.

They're both done via PC at the same time with the same program (Unrevoked3 is only temporary nand)
Unrevoked Forever unlocks the bootloader permanently via recovery with an .img

Wow man this will be my last response here about this but I want to say a couple quick things. First did you even read the link you posted? Yes with unrevoked you can gain nand unlock and root at the same time but if you also read it says this.

Yes. It previously did not; as of version 3.0, it does.
So root and nand unlock are not the same and is not always done at the same time. It is possible to be nand unlocked and not have root. Which is the case when you use htcdev unlock. Do your homework before you go making statements please.
I am not here trying to run anyone down and start fights but I am here to spread knowledge and help out others with problems. If you give someone bad information it will cause problems down the line later. Most people will assume you know what you are talking about when you make a post even if the information is not correct. So please take the time and make sure your information is correct before you post it.
So take a look at links I have posted and see what root is, how it is used, and see the difference.

He already is rooted and needs permanent unlock which is what Unrevoked Forever does, which is linked in the link I posted.

I guess he thinks Unrevoked Forever is bad information and harmful to Evos.

If you backed up the game, you can always download titanium backup and restore. Make sure you didn't delete the files from sd-card (they should be there). Sorry if this was already answered or i'm wrong. :fingers-crossed:
edit: if its a stock rom and you backup every app with titanium back up you could.
jlmancuso is having a hard week. i would give him a break. as far as i can tell he's genuinely trying to be helpful and is catching crap from all sides these days. eventually he will slow down and not accidentally provoke people (or take things personally). but he seems like valuable asset to the community overall so i'm rooting for him. It's already unlocked, via the instructions from the HTC dev site. I didn't use Unrevoked -- I tried, and got a message about something being too new of a version. I'll dig around more, but I before I spent too much time I wanted to make sure I could restore the data on the stupid Smurf game for her.
I did NOT do a Titanium Backup of anything on there before I started. The LG Optimus G doesn't have an SD card, so I can't just swap SD cards. I can copy files from the EVO to the PC then to the LGOG. I think I might install Smurfs on the new phone, root it, then just try and copy the Smurf files from the EVO over to the Optimus G and see if overwriting the data files would restore her game.
Will report back on whether or not it works, or if I can't get superuser working.
And chill out, friends. I appreciate all sorts of info, even if it's not what I'm looking for. Y'all rock.
I am not taking it personally and dont think unrevoked is harmful. I am not going to argue with anyone about the facts. I posted the articles al5uwtqind if anyone wants to read them and learn more than cool. The information is for the benefit of everyone. Call troll or a$$ or whatever. I am here to help like most everyone.

I think he meant "Htcdev site" then "fastboot flash recovery", but it seems like Big_Onion did everything right as far as rooting the phone, but there can be other reasons why Titanium is not working properly. It could be Titanium data needs to be wiped or it could be an issue with busybox. He never said he was not rooted, he only said that superuser was not giving Titanium root permissions, which has happened to me also. I wish he would have ran the root checker app too, to verify did he really have root or not. Then it would be easier to tell which path to take.
And also, why are we arguing over unrevoked and unrevoked-forever? Those don't work on the newer stock roms, because they were patched in 2011 by the first Gingerbread update on. Since big_onion used the Htcdev site, he is likely on Gingerbread. They, unrevoked3 and forever, would only work if he downgraded the radios to the ones which came with either Eclair or Froyo, the two previous operating systems. Titanium backup only needs an unlocked bootloader from the Htcdev site, and superuser permissions from the superuser app to work. Anything else is just extra, at least on Gingerbread.
