Unrevoked 1-click apk defeated in recent update?

My Evo is doing fine, but I was trying to help a friend root his yesterday and the Unrevoked 1-click apk didn't appear to be doing the trick. The only difference I can think of between our two phones is that I haven't downloaded the update that came this week. Has Sprint defeated this root method in the most recent patch?

Yes...they are up to UnrEVOked 3.

Right, this method requires you to use a PC though, right? I'm wondering if its still possible to root it using the unrevoked on-phone application, or has this been defeated? And if so, was the defeat in the most recent patch?

bump. I'm afraid the answer given is still a bit unclear to me. Can someone please clarify?

Make sure you are going to 'unrevoked.com/m' if you want to use it on your phone and avoid having to use the pc method. I forgot the /m when I first tried it and got pretty confused as well.

Yes, this is exactly what I did. The apk downloaded and installed, but didn't appear to gain root when I ran it. I ran it several times, but every time I attempted to run wifi tether, it would say that I wasn't root.

You can try downloading the Simple Root app from the development forum, Its only 4 clicks and its a legitimate full root. It does require the PC, but you seem to know how to use one of those as you got to this website.
Don't take shortcuts because your not sure what you're doing, learn

Thank you for the reply. I'll probably end up Simple Root for myself, but this is for a somewhat elderly friend of mine. He only needs root for wifi tether, since he can't get broadband where he lives (3g is okay). I figured the apk root method would be suitable for him since he would know how to uninstall it if he needed to claim is warranty or something. I won't be around to support his phone for him.
Anyway, thanks again. I'm still learning myself and appreciate the advice.

Ahh ok, he can always hit the wipe button and it will go back to a state good enough for the average sprint rep.

I Installed unrevoked 3by usb because i got last version 147.651.1. Its anyway to unroot and get back to stock rom. I tried different ways and nothing for example i wiped data, hard reset . etc.
Right now i dont have wifi is unable and that why i would like get back to stock. Also i use the method with htc sync and the ruu 132.651.1 andgive me error 171 then reintall the ruu give me error 140 and boot to the main screen/
Please any solution to get back to stock .

[Q] run ota while rooted

Any consequences other than losing root? I'm not too concerned about getting it right this second since I know these devs at xda will cook somethin nice up in a few days. Just want to know my options. THanks

It should just flash the new ROM. Yes, you'll lose root and it probably replaces the bootloader so you can't boot into recovery either, but it should be just another stock phone after that.

So I am rooted and go to load up the update and it puts me in the spot with the android guy and the /!\ what gives...

I'm in the same boat dude. I currently have UnrEVOked 3 on my phone. My guess is that is whats F'n it up

hmmm yup I have the same root method - great I thought it would just write over...

Well we all know by now once your phone is rooted you cannot do any ota, you are much better of waiting a day or two to get the rooted version from one of the dev.

some of us dont care about loosing root, and as far as i knew i could at anytime upgrade to something sprint put out and all that would happen is i would loose root.

I'm pretty pissed...I thought that an OTA would override the unrEVOked 3 since it's not even full root. Now I gotta figure out what to do next. There is another thread here that describes a method to UNROOT. But I'm not sure if it works with UNREVOKED 3

It doesn't matter what you did to root it, you can un-root the same way

This is my position aswell. Im sure i read pleanty of people saying unrevoked would have no effect on future updates, and the worst that would happen was loosing root.

eventually all the developers will migrate to froyo as a base so you can wait or you can unroot like me and install the OTA with no prob. When I installed the OTA it kinda installed like a regular app...did not go to bootloader or nothing like that. Then it just rebooted into froyo...did not lose anything such as installed apps or user data etc. It's all good eitherway you choose in my opinion. Keep root and wait...Unroot/OTA and wait...it will only be a short time like almost already and full froyo with root is a done deal...

I had the june update so i was 1.47 but either way this is the program to use...

This in my opinion is the way to go...make sure you use the 1.47 one and you are good to go...then get the OTA FROYO...I did it this way.

I had Unrevoked3 on mine for wifi tethering..and did the manual leaked update (update.zip on sd card etc) and it worked just peachy, if you wanted to go that route. I did lost my root but none of my data (even superusers is still installed lol)
From what I read there isnt much of a difference between the .3 and .6 versions anyway
Maybe if you did that, then waited to see what HTC comes up with for us "early adopters" to get us up to speed lol

Good for Enterprise - root user

I recently started working for a company that uses good for enterprise for their email. I know how it works but my question is this.
Can't I delete su and busy box to remove root. Then whenever i need root I can just go to recovery and install a .Zip package that adds the two files back.
Does anyone know if this would be possible?
P.s. what gets me is that pirates remove security protection from payed apps all the time, but a work around for this does not exist.

You could nandroid your current setup then flash the unrooted OTA - leave s-off. You'll have to reflash recovery and nandroid the unrooted rom. Then you can restore your backup if you need root.
Or you can unroot and go to the 3.70 OTA (the last FroYo release) and use z4root for temp root. There isn't a temp root for the GB update, so do not unroot and accept the OTA unless you want to wait for a root exploit which could take weeks.
I don't know why you need to be unrooted for email. Depending on why, what you're asking may be possible. But do understand that modifying a rom is a lot more involved than modifying an app.

You could also try to badger your IT department to remove the restriction. It's configurable, and not something inherent in Good. My company doesn't have it enabled, for example, and I can run Good rooted.
Doubtful you'll succeed, but it can't really hurt to try, right?

But I do know GFE only checks for busybody and su. I was hoping I could delete the two files then just create a patch that could be deployed in recovery to add these m files back as needed.
But before I go flashing has anyone tried this?

I haven't tried it since I don't need to. But back before they'd rolled Good out for us (but after I heard it was coming), I read that the administrators have the option of locking root users out. I didn't know if they were going to do it or not, so I was thinking along the exact lines you were. Luckily it turned out to be unneeded for me, but it should work. As long as you're S-OFF, there shouldn't be any real risk in trying it.

Ill prob. Try it today. I have a transformer rooted as well. So we will see.

Yes i do it all the time but I dont flash them, I remove them then add them in again. Be sure you turn persistent mode off, then quit the app.

I used my transformer as a guinea pig and it worked. But what I did was delete su, busybox and superuser.apk.
Then whenever I needed root I would flash my rom back without wiping.
I want to make a .zip file with only those 3 files in it. So the flash time and footprint is small. Any suggestions on reading material.

At the time of post I was using leaked GB and Gingerbreak, I would just use Gingerbreak to get root again when I needed it.
Now after the new update on Good to 1.73 I get ROOT detected when I have no Root. So now we need to see what they are detecting.
It would be nice if someone could decompile the app and change the ROOT detection method.

Running into an issue regarding recovery.

I like to think I am rather educated in regards to how to root and all that. I just got my replacement Evo today and of course it is updated to 2.3.3. So I can't use unrevoked, but I was hoping to flash over to a older backup I made on 2.2 on my old phone.
Except, when I do the whole hold the volume down + power button and eventually choose recover, all that happens is a image of a phone and a exclamation point appears and it never leaves here.
I know in order for me to be able to use ClockwordMod I need to root the phone, which can't happen on 2.3
So what are my options? How do I flash over my old rom???? Even if it doesnt let me get back to 2.2 its still better than redownloading all my apps.

I still have to do update the drivers on the phone (device manager, installing the unrevoked drivers...unless i need to be rooted for this as well)
so even then I still cant use the recovery option? whats the point of it? HTC doesnt want you rooting, hence 2.3 being stock on Evos, but yet they include the recovery option on their phones which you seemingly cant use...unless...you...root? im confused. Unconfuse me please

Rooting doesnt exactly let you use recovery.
The stock recovery from HTC is basically nothing.
When you do full root. It gives you the ability to install unsigned apps. That is what s-off means (security off). So the bootloader doesnt check to see what your installing is signed by HTC.
So therefore.
1. Root
2. Install custom recovery.
Now some automated root apps (unrevoked) do the whole process for you.
If you root by adb. You would be rooting and installing a custom recovery seperately, if you actually knew what the adb codes were and not just following a tutorial.
You can root and still have no recovery. Root doesnt mean custom recovery. They are two seperate things.
So even though the recovery option is there it is unuseable. Until you root. Then you can get a custom recovery...hope this helps

At this time no. I think its more of a way to get you to buy the next thing from them. If devs keep making the phone feel fresh and new, how long would you wait to upgrade(just my take on it). I believe recovery is there for their developers and carriers developers(to add their bloat) again just my take. Give the devs here sometime and i'm sure they'll find a way to get root back.

i truly hope so. ive been spoiled by CM7. I like to run juicedefender ultimate on CM7 during my work days where im not around a plug and ill be at over 85% on a 15 hour day. on stock HTC 2.3 with the same juicedefender settings running on the same 15 hour day, im down to 50% or lower sometimes. i can live without root for now. the biggest negative is I just cancelled the Sprint hotspot because of CM7.
can you even run the hotspot on stock sense if you aren't paying for it like you could on a root?

No you have to be rooted to run either Sprint Hotspot or Wireless Tether.
No ota on root yet. But im sure they are working on it...

[Q] HELP!! Have I bricked my new device!? SO WORRIED!!

Hey guys,
I'm kinda new to the HTC/Android world, found this community a damn good place to find support.. But now I've hit a road block.
Basically, I've been eager to root from day 1 of getting my first htc handset, I came across from jailbreak and loved the fact of customizability with Android.
So I had the Google play edition(I think, all geared towards Google) running Kit Kat 4.4.4. Love it, big Google user so this all tied together lovely.
Here is the Situation.
I found a video on youtube, cannot provide URL as I'm in work at the moment, but it was root guide from scratch. Fresh windows OS, seemingly a phone fresh out the box.. you get the idea.
I used the Hasoon2000 tool to root the device. Installed ADB etc on my pc, signed up as a a dev, got the Key for device, sent in and received my .bin file. I got up to actually rooting my device, well pleased and happy. Using TWRP via Hasoon2000.
But here is where **** hits the fan.
The device needed to update, It took me back to 4.4.2 but Im unsure on how to get back to most up to date OS and keep the root.
But when I reboot to install this, it goes into TWRP. no other way around this.
Queried this on another forum, decided to continue to be patient... but no replies, in the mean time I restored my apps and have a fiddle, see what the root function can do for myself.
I installed "Freedom 1.0.6" and a program called "Market Share"- Hate iAP, some games are ridiculously priced for the smallest of things, I just wanted to sandbox plague inc. ;(
Now the device is stuck in a boot loop, phone starts up, see the home screen for a bout 40 seconds/ one minute.. Some times I unlock the device and it goes back to flash screen then.. others I boot an app and its slides away once more.
This happened close to 15x before I left for work this morning and I imagine its just going to repeat this and run the battery - I tried to stop this loop by going into TWRP and possibly choosing to boot system this way may of stopped it.. but when I was on the boot screen with those options.. It said Tampered at top of screen and S-On- which has scared me quite a bit..
What the hell has happened!?
I'm desperate to know and don't want to have this damn thing bricked! Please help.. try explain like I'm 5, as said I'm new to a lot of this! >.<

first off, if the screen comes on, its not bricked.

Do you mean you accepted an official OTA? I think that is what you are saying. You should not be accepting OTAs on a phone that has been bootloader unlocked, custom recovery, etc. unless you know exactly what you are doing and what the result will be (which is clearly not the case).
Stock recovery is needed to install an OTA. That is why it keeps going to TWRP, then it doesn't find stock recovery and reboots, hence the loop you are stuck in. Try to find the OTA file and delete it.

Thank you for fast response.
Official OTA - being that the phone its self said "Update the OS" - I just accepted this, hit download and began install as a reboot- didnt spot implications. As said, noob, followed a tut. If it highlighted DO NOT UPDATE or.. IF U WANT UPDATE NOW FOLLOW THIS- Great, but nothing of the sort?
Is the OTA file basically the .exe for the OS- so find it and delete it.. although I dont have enough time to navigate and establish where the file actually is located!
Or do you have any links to tutorials I could possibly follow?

This is really your main issue. By following a YouTube video and using a Toolkit, you've failed to actually learn anything or gain any real understanding or knowledge. Do yourself a favor and ditch the tutorials and videos (and toolkit for that matter) and do it the old fashioned way . . . by reading. Videos and step-by-step guides do you no good when things go south (as you've now discovered). And with the prior proper knowledge (usually not gained by following tutorials) this whole mess probably would have never happened in the first place.
A cardinal rule of Android phone modding: DO NOT accept/download/install OTAs (official OS updates) on a modded device unless you know what you are doing, and what the result will be. If in any doubt, simply DO NOT do it.

.exe file is Windows specific. You are looking for a zip file, and it typically starts with "OTA". Don't remember where its saved to, so you will have to search for it. If you can't keep the phone running long enough to do so, mount the memory on your computer and search that way.
Deleting the OTA file worked for me on a past device, although one M8 user in the same position said deleting the file didn't get him out of the loop. Flashing your ROM again, or wiping the internal memory (backup any important personal data first) might be options for you.

taken on board. I know with my jailbreaks in past it has been a pain, assumed Android would be alot more stable to over write- due to functionality of OS and unlocked features.
I was being generic when I said .exe- basically the installer..
I returned from work to see phone stopped looping.. i could stop the install and deleted the file ASAP.. but now what.. Phone is still bugging me to update, lost the root(got a checker).. so whats the correct procedure!?

Me personally to take an OTA is to relock bootloader, install stock recovery, and make sure CID matches. I am S-Off so bootloader means very little, but you can unlock and relock at will when you are S-Off. You will not lose S-Off accepting an OTA.

Try to re-flash the ROM, with stok ROM, using TWRP and clean install. It should work.

First of all once the bootloader is unlocked you don't have to relock it to get OTA.
As I undersand you have done the following:
1) Unlock using HTCDev-Method
2) flashed a custom revocery (TWRP in your case)
3) flashed a supersu too!?
To install the OTA means loosing root acces. Thus you have to re-root it after the OTA is done. The other problem ist that STOCK OTAs don't work with a custom recovery. Meaning you would have to flash a stock recovery first, install the OTA second (as long as you didn't change anything an just root), and re-root third.
Let's have a look which stock recovery you would need:
1) reboot to bootloader
2) connect the phone to you PC and open cmd in you adb/fastboot folder
3) enter "fastboot getvar all"
4) paste this information here (but DELETE the IMEI and SERIAL NUMBER before posting!!)
As soon as we know which stock recovery you need we will go on.

I'm not saying there is anything "wrong" with the toolkit, per se. For the most part, it does what its intended to do.
But it also shortcuts the learning process, and facilitates folks rooting the phone without gaining the proper knowledge. This is a dangerous thing.
This is just my opinion. But I strongly believe it. If you can't accomplish these things without a toolkit, you shouldn't be rooting your phone in the first place.
Others use the toolkits, and love them. They are more than entitled to have their own opinion. But when things go south, the toolkits aren't going to help; and those folks don't have the proper knowledge and they come running here. So you tell me what is the "best" way to root the phone?

I already figured this was probably the case. But I found it better to provide the exact information on what file to delete; rather than leaving it open to the possibility of you and/or others being misinformed.

Sounds like you still have TWRP installed, so just flash SU or SuperSU to gain root.
After that, you can use Titanium Backup or similar app to find the update process and freeze it, to stop the update notifications.
Don't remember the exact process (this is where searching and reading comes in for you) but its something like "drm..." or "updater".

I have this situation before,what i do is find the right stock recovery and flash..after ota done flash back custom recovery..?

At this point after seeing this, I would suggest you take some time and start reading. All of your answers are here in the forums. Knowledge is power and within the pages of this site you will find everything you need.
To take the OTA find a stock recovery, to flash ROM's find the one you like and flash via your favorite recovery.
