[Q] Multiple issues after transferring with Titanium Backup - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Just to let people know, I'm a relative noob to Android in general and particularly to this site, so have some patience.
My wife's Samsung Galaxy S 4g's screen broke, so she got the T989 as a replacement. After doing some research, it seems that Titanium Backup was the recommended way to move data over. So, I needed to educate myself on how to do that. The original phone was easy and I did the backup. The S II was less easy and after spending way too much time on the i9100 forum, I found out I was in the wrong place.
So, anyways, got her phone jailbroken and ran TB on it to restore. Unfortunately, it seems to be the beginning of my problems. Phone app didn't work. Cleared data there, which she lost her contacts. TWLauncher throws errors. Clear data there as well. Messaging hasn't worked either, and it seems to be the solution is to wipe the whole thing. I also can't seem to browse the file system via USB.
What am I doing wrong here? All I wanted to do was to move everything over from the old phone to the new one, but it seems I bought trouble.

You are reporting a back up from a completely different phone. Restoring data will often cause things to go funny. It's usually recommended to simply restore the app and nothing more. I would recommend just resetting the phone back to stock, full wipe and don't restore anything. See how it functions initially, then once you think things are going well, just start to restore apps.
 cheers

also, be sure to not restore system apps until you have become a butt more familiar with how everything works. (especially when coming from another device)

If i wanted to back up a game, i selected back up. I changed the back up location to my external sd card and also used google drive to store the info too. If i install twrp and flash a custom rom, will i be able to install the app and continue playing my game at the same spot i saved it at? I tried searching for the answer but have seen mixed answers via google dancing around my specific question. Thanks everyone for your time.

It's going to depend on the app really. Some apps don't play well with some roms. I've backed up games and restored to current roms and been fine, while others didn't restore correctly. Trial and error my friend, trial and error.

Battery and Clock Color

Hey everybody, First Post, Whoop whoop lol Anyway on with the show, I just flashed over to The gingersnap 1.24 Rom from Juggernaut 5.0, reinstalled everything from titanium backup all normal like, and then ran into a little issue with my clock and battery percentage settings... for some reason they are staying green like I had set before and i cannot for the life of me figure out #1. Why this happened/What changed it and #2 How to change it again... I really try not to bother people on here with stupid question but I'm perplexed by this one and was hoping someone might be able to help me figure it out, i attached a picture of what exactly I'm talking about.
Thanks in advance for anytime anyone is willing to put into this
When you say "reinstalled everything using titanium backup, " does that imply you restored system data? If so, don't restore system data ever. Just restore apps and application data.

I have found in titanium settings if I enable migrate system data that it will sometimes work across different ROMs, but still never a sure thing. Usually best between same ROM with updated Android components. I have had it work between totally different ROMs as well sometimes. You can also choose to auto integrate sys dalvick too. These have to both be enabled before you run backup to be effective.
This is just my thoughts and advice be prepared with full nandroid backup, and to test different settings as you may have different setup and things to consider.
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO DO WITH YOUR OWN PERSONAL DEVICE. RUN FULL BACKUPS WHENEVER YOU TRY ANYTHING.

Basic noob rooting questions

The question: Can I root a phone to try apps without affecting my updated ICS fix from sprint and without changing how my phone looks and feels?
My assumption: When I root it uses a ROM that someone "hacked" and it overwrites my updated ICS update.
The facts: I got the original ICS roll-out from sprint and very recently also the "fix" update to ICS from OTA. I have never rooted a phone and I'm thinking about it because my battery life has gone to hell, and my signal strength is a mess.
I'd also like to get mass storage options back to get compatibility with a usb head unit.

So, you got the original roll out to Ics, then you got a second update?

I was waiting to see of anyone else was going to respond but since I'm going to call it a night, I'll throw my 2 cents in, then I'll wait for my change..
I had to ask about the "second" update since the only thing i know is this- The original roll out was paused, then when it started up again, small fixes were noticed. One being the Swype issue. Not big changes according to some.
So to answer your question about rooting to try apps, just use sfhubs one click for ff18. Clear the cache on Swype after that. Then try your apps..
I'd suggest reading up on backing up your data, etc, so when you notice that stock battery life, look and feel and all of that isn't different, and you want to go back, you can.
Or just save all of that trouble and root and flash the stock tweaked ics rom, with a custom kernal, and enjoy a stock, rooted, long lasting daily experience..

Ok. So when you say stock tweaked ics rom you are saying that it's going to overwrite the updated ics i got through ota? I also don't want to lose my contacts and apps that are installed and also all the"theme" work I've done to this. I just want less Los.. More battery life and usb mass storage feature back.

The stock tweaked rom is located on the Dev section. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29788992
For your concerns, you can attempt to address issue by issue.
Sync contacts w google.
Change modems to address the los issues you have.
Use titanium backup for your apps.
Use a custom kernel for your battery life.
And use sfhubs storage mode fix.
Or, sync contacts w google, use tb for your apps and find a great rom that addresses the rest of the issues.
You keep saying something about an update to ics, but the latest ff18 rom builds have all ics and more..
(and of course you can always go back stock of you choose..)

Ok so bear with me here.
If I do the latter as you suggest (and I greatly appreciate your time and answers) would I have to personalize my phone all over again like it was new out of the box or does TB restore my apps like nothing ever happened?
I'm getting really close to pulling the trigger here but it makes me nervous because I do so very much business with my outlook account, GPS, messaging and WIFI.
If I screw it up I'll be dead in the water with no love from our IT department haha.
I come as a PC power user. overclocking, hacking etc. Is TB like when I make a exact image of my operating system and all it's contents and then if something goes wrong I can just blast it to a HDD and it's like nothing ever happened?
I have trouble leaving things be when they "work".
Thanks again.

First off, you're welcome. And if I say something off kilter about what you are wanting to do, believe me there will be people that say so. (Surprisingly, It's a quiet thread)
What you would refer to as an img in PC, Nandroid is what you would call it here. You can find out all about that with a very helpful guide [TUT] What Is Nandroid And How To Use It [Complete Guide] [VeNuM]
Be sure to use it if you're that dependent on your phone for work.
Speaking of which, if you don't have a backup plan for your phone, I'd hold off on puling that trigger until you have read all that you can.
Using Titanium Backup, as with any software, can fail. Be sure to know how to backup and restore and when and what you can restore. Don't go from ICS to GB and try without expecting issues. There are other apps as well, MybackupPro, astro file manager.. Just do your homework.
Having a nandroid is essential for me. If you rename the backup, do NOT put any spaces in the name. It's also a strong suggestion to verify md5 if you plan on moving and storing - Don't delete the original without verifying the copy with md5. Just search for a md5 checker.
If you do decide to flash, good luck. Ton's of smarter people than me here tat can help, just make a backup..
I've been reading my butt off here but I still don't have a grasp of the rooting.
When I root a phone doesn't it overwrite all my stuff? Then how would I be able to use Titanium Back up to back up all my previous stuff?
I bet I'll understand much better once I actually root it but like you said I'm trying to get a grasp of it all before I commit.
Rooting alone, no.
If you use sfhubs ff18, rooted, no data, you will not lose your current setup and data. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27635571
You'll just be rooted.
For TB I'll refer you to this - http://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/titanium-backup-kb

[Q] Major lag from touch screen suddenly

Hello.
I have posted this in the forums at Android Central and only got one response. I've had my phone since Feb of this year. Since 11/2 there is major lag. No issues on 11/1. Taps on the home screen are continuously being read as long presses. My lock screen is really laggy, as are home screens and most apps. Bad piggies for whatever reason is working just fine. Most other apps including the keyboard are very laggy. It just seems to be very slow to respond to touch all of a sudden. My phone is rooted stock GB. At AC, I was told an app was hogging RAM. I downloaded Memory Useage from the google play store but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm still getting that lady after killing and uninstalling apps. The lag is still there with the native launcher so I really don't think it has anything to do with GO Launcher. I used TiB to revert GOL back to the previous version. I also uninstalled GOLocker as well. I've done a soft reset but it didn't help.
Is there a way to see my Play update history so I can see which apps installed that night? I've always had the occasional lag but it wasn't ever really a big deal. This is greatly interfering with my use of the phone. I am lucky to type a word before the keyboard disappears. Low resources makes sense but I just can't figure out what app is hogging them.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of resting back to unrooted GB to upgrade to stock ICS.
The first app in the my apps list is the most recent one. So start uninstalling from the top.. Now if you had installed an app say 2 months ago, uninstalled it a month ago and then reinstalled it today then it won't show at the top of the list. It will be still at that same spot where it was 2 months ago. So keep in mind if you reinstalled some app.
Also you should uninstall apps from applications in settings so you can clear cache and data for that app. Or you restart after each uninstall.

This is so frustrating. In the Play Store App, my "Installed" list is alphabetical and the "All" list is listed by install order with the most recent at the top regardless of timestamp of update. I cannot see any option for changing the order. Should I just go by the TiB list? It is showing the apps in order of update and lets me clear cache and uninstall the apps.

Now I have removed all apps updated on 11/2 or overnight from the evening of 11/1. The only one I can't touch is Kies. I have frozen it with TiB but I'm still getting the super heavy lag. What can I do next? Do I need to just reset the whole device now and start from scratch?
This is really frustrating. I love my phone and haven't had it long enough to switch to something else. Are there any tests that I can perform to check on the screen itself?
I have also installed OS Monitor and the top apps using up the CPU are OS Monitor, SYstem, Google Play Movies & TV, Android System, gzip. THe % used varies from 0% up to 26% they may last only a second or two. Is there something wrong with my phone? I feel like I've exhausted finding a resource hog.
If you have a custom recovery installed then do a nandroid backup and flash a fresh install of something to test it. If its not broke in the test then you can restore tour backup and continue to troubleshoot. Honestly though its easy enough to just start fresh. I do it every few days/weeks on a new rom.
Heck at this point flash something ICS or even JB. I can't think of a reason to ever use a GB rom again.

Paranoid android 2.50. You can make a nandroid backup from el26 kernel with cwm of an pics rom.

I'm currently using codename, great rom. I've only used my nandroid backups several times but they do work. Always just made my backup in whatever custom recovery I was using at the time. Can't remember what recovery I used on GB. Its been a while. Edit just use the el26 blues mentioned above
When switching between ROMs or experimenting I use SMS backup and restore and call log backup and restore from market. Its nice to have those old texts and call logs sometimes.
I use SMS Backup cuz I want to save my texts but I don't know if I need to save my call log.
Thanks for the recommendation. Paranoid Android looks pretty cool.
My external SD card is safe right? Does it need to be backed up as well?

New to Samsung galaxy S3 have a few questions please?

Hello all, been a long time since I have been here and have really missed it.
I recently switched carriers from Verizon to Sprint and got me a Galaxy S3 from Wireless.Amazon for $39.99, along with 3 Motorola photon q's for my kids and wife for a penny each... Not too shabby of deal IMO. Lol
2 years ago, I got a htc incredible and rooted it and went through about 20 roms before I finally stuck with cyanogen mod 7, which had everything I was looking for built in.
The main 2 things I want with this Gs3 is free wifi tether and ability to move apps to sd card.
I read a post about native tether and it looked like someone got it working on jelly bean? Not native tether but some kind of wifi tether.
Streve or something like that?
Uhg.. I am rambling, let me make this short and sweet.
1)Can I have wifi tether on jelly bean?
2)Can I have app to sd on galaxy s3?
3)Can I have call recording?
I am stock 4.1.1 with root right now but am willing to go with a custom ROM to get these features... Don't care if its 4.1.1 or 4.0.4 as long as I can get these working. #3 isn't too important.
Please point me to where I need to be if these things or part of these things are possible?
I would like to be as stable as possible.
I'm not the type to be changing roms all the time.
Also, what is the way to go if I need a custom ROM and want to get my apps back and such? Without having to set them all up again, if thats possible?
I consider myself a noob again since so much has changed since my htc incredible.
Thanks so much and I apologize if I piss anybody off with this post. I just don't have the time or energy to read so much info that is available on this site. Just thinking that someone that is familiar with all this would have a much easier time pointing me in the direction I need.
Happy holidays and be safe everybody.

Wifi tether you'll have to search for the right mod, apps to SD is a thing of the past on this phone, internal storage is just a folder in /data so you have ~12gb for whatever(apps, pics, vids, music etc) aside from your microsd. Call recording I think there's something for it but don't use it so searching teh googlez will be your best bet

Most of the roms will have abilites your looking for. Tether as stated is only a quick mod away as well. Now the fun part of skimming roms to find one that fits you. I run the peoples rom. Light theme, great battery life. Clean rom overall. Best thing to do read a couple, check last few posts to see recent issues (if any) flash and form an opinion. Everyones experience differs. Thanks to you both. Well yeah, I guess app to sd isn't needed anymore. I had only 8G on my incredible, even though I had all my unimportant apps on the sd, I never came close to filling up the internal memory.
I will check out The Peoples ROM. I did notice that JellyBomb topic said something like "totally bug free" or something like that.. Any opinion on JellyBomb?
Oh and the last concern I had was restoring my apps and data so I don't have to set them up each ROM change? Should I purchase Titanium Backup?
Your input is greatly appreciated.

TB is definetly the way to go. You can flash the custom recovery, root the device, then back up your apps before flashing any ROMs.
The only two roms i know of (and could find after a quick peruse through the dev sections) that have call recording are Team Sonics (via a flash-able zip) and Blazer rom (baked in).
Personally i run the latest Blazer JB rom, great battery life, smooth operation, and a stripped down TW experience with all the major goodies and none of the bloatware. Great compromise between pure AOSP and Pure TW

1. I use Team Sonic's Free GS3 ROM, and it has WiFi tether included (and working, for me at least). It is accessed in the settings menu. It is a smooth ROM for me, and the install is customizable using the Aroma installer. A very cool way to set up the ROM during the flash process!
2. I believe Google changed the way it partitioned/formated a phone's internal memory, and that is giving problems to moving apps to sd cards. Unless you really download/install a large number of apps, the 11 or so gigs of internal storage that is free is plenty! I just use my sd card as a media storage (pics, music, etc). There are ways to go about moving apps to sd, but I'm not sure it's 100% reliable.
3. Can't help you on that one, sorry!
Whatever you decide (and since you have root), please make a nandroid backup of your current stock configuration! I use TWRP recovery, and it is a great touch-based recovery program. CWM is now touch-based too. Backup first before doing anything else, please!

Oh boy.. I know people are going to roll their eyes and think I am a freakin idiot.. I prolly am.
I just purchased titanium backup pro and want to make a backup of my stuffs so when I change a rom, I can restore.
Do I really need TB or will google restore my stuff when I log in?
If I do need TB, is there a vid from that qbking77 guy that explains how to do this? The vids I have watched from him are EXCELLENT and VERY easy to follow.
I opened TB and it is so complicated to me that I have no clue where to start.. I did find the option to store my backups on the sd card(made a new folder called"titanium backup")<-----should I have done this?
I searched google and found a vid on using TB and rom change and in the vid the guy goes to backup and selects "batch" but I cant find that on my version of TB..(latest version)... CRAP I just found it.. clicked the checkmark on top right and got that batch screen he had...(see how dumb I am?)
I think I want to just backup "user apps" with no system data, but in TB under "Backup all user apps" it says 0. System data says 228 but wont that interfere with a new rom?
OK, what I want to do is:
First) backup my apps that I have downloaded/purchased.
Second) Install my first rom... The Peoples Rom v3.05.
Third) Restore my backup from TB WITHOUT A HITCH.
Fourth) Try other roms.
Fifth) Restore TB backup WITHOUT A HITCH.
Can someone link me to the info I need(preferably videos because I am a visual learner)?
Or if what I am trying to do is easily accomplished,, explain step by step what I need to do?
I know search is my friend but when I search, I get overwhelmed. I have a boy with down syndrome and he takes most of my time so thats why I am trying to take the easier route.
Thanks for all your patience. It is much appreciated.
Also, feel free to kick me out of here if I am asking too much.. I can definitely understand that.

google restore will not restore app data. i will re-download you most recent batch of apps (i believe that's how it decides what to download, im not 100% sure on the logic behind what it does and does not download.) and stuff like wifi passwords and gmail settings, etc.
If you want to move your app-data (games, books, locations in books, movies, etc) or don't want to download stuff constantly, then you want TB. i use it extensively when testing out new roms so i am not constantly re-downloading my apps and what not.

Thank you. I have been reading the TB how to's. It says to backup my user apps and system data when changing roms...
But when I click on batch. It shows 0 for user apps.. System data shows 228 and User apps+system data shows 228..
Does this seem correct?
I guess I will backup user apps+system data and install a new rom and see what happens.. If it doesnt go well, I can restore my nandroid.
duh,, I messed up and unchecked apps in the filters thinking it was the "all" checkmark
now I have 80 user apps.
Just to make sure,,
I should backup user apps only and NOT system data because the system data might not be compatible with the new rom?
Thanks

Don't back up your system apps. Most ROMs come with their own set of system Apps and they don't necessarily play well with each other. you can back up your accounts, your user dictionary, etc......but usually I just back up the user apps. If there are any specific system apps you have that you want to take with you, I'd recommend converting them to user apps through titanium backup and restoring them that way.
The other option is to just dirty flash the roms, this way you don't have to worry about losing your apps/data, but YMMV.
You should get Rom toolbox pro. It has over 20 different apps combined. It's a very polished app, you should check that out for restoring your apps. For your flashoholic\noob needs.
Silly sheeps, S3's arnt for noobs.
Hey, A BIG THANKS to all of you that chimed in here.. I thought I would get flamed because of my stupidity but not one person scolded me.
I have finally flashed my first rom.
I backed up "user apps" only with TB
Then booted into clockworkmod recovery and wiped cache, delvik, and factory reset all right there.
Then installed zip from sd and everything went great.
upon signing in to my google account, most my apps came back, so I only had to restore 8 of them with TB.
One weird thing happened, I just installed a game last night called "Bike Race Free" and was really liking it but when google was d-loading and installing my apps back, that one came back with "this app is not compatible with your device" but TB restored it fine and it works great. I think I will post on The Peoples Rom thread about it. I was on an IRC channel and one guy said it "might be because the "build.prop" file might of been modified to make it think its a different device or something similar..."
Anyway, I feel comfortable now about flashing roms. It was easier than when I did it over 2 years ago on my Droid Inc.
Thanks again all.
Oh and I will look into that app you mentioned Brandonrz,, RomToolBox Pro. Thanks

Some apps arent JB compatible yet which is the most common reason ive see for apps not being compatible. Less common are DPI changes and resolution issues.
I second RomToolBox Pro, excellent app for all your rooting needs

Galaxy nexus gone slow

Hi. My phone (on Stock unrooted 4.1.2, didn't upgrade to 4.2.2 for no reason) has recently become very, very slow. I guess the reason for that is that I recently copied an MKV movie to it. Ever since I did that, it has been dead slow. Even though I have deleted it now, the sluggishness still persists. There's nothing else that I did (ever since this problem started), and please note, my phone was blazing fast before this, so I don't expect suggestions to flash a new ROM or kernel (because I'm a noob when it comes to flashing ROMs and stuff, and I will have so many more problems doing so). I think my phone can go back to the state on stock ROM and kernel.
Another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988233) mentions the same problem, I've found out that I have the exact same problem. My phone wasn't sluggish before I copied the movie. But now that I have removed it, the phone is stil slow and sluggish*
* what does it mean when i say "slow and sluggish":
- pressing the lock button doesn't turn the screen on, i have to do it a couple of times
- apps take longer to load
- widgets don't load (most of them)
- everything that you can imagine (swiping, sliding, etc) is slow.
Help, please. Thanks in advance.
Clear the cache of the video player application that you tried to play the video with. That may help. Go into settings>apps>downloaded>your video app>clear cache.
If it's the Gallery, go into all applications instead of downloaded.

It may be caused by installing too many RAM-hogging apps, if you're rooted you can try using Greenify from the play store and see if that helps.

I didn't copy the movie for playing, I copied it to transfer it somewhere else. And I've cleared cache of the video player MX Player just to be sure, and uninstalled it. Still no use.
One more thing. Apps are not responding, even stock apps. Once I open an app, it takes forever to load, and the message pops up: "<app> is not responding, would you like to stop it?" with the options "wait, stop, report".
All this has started ever since I copied that movie to my phone. Before that, it was blazing fast, no RAM hogging apps or anything.
How about you try to save all your pics/files you have on your phone, and do a factory reset? I know that's the highest you will go, but still worth a shot!

Noob question, and I'd rather google it; but now since I have an expert in reach, I'd prefer asking. How do you backup?

SMS backup and restore - for SMS ( When and IF I need to back some up ), Titanium Backup for everything else ( if you are rooted ) - though, lately I'm using Carbon - you can back up your sms, data, everything you need without root ...

Okay, I found "Helium" to do the backup job just right. Now, how to restore?
P.S. Just updated to 4.2.2 to find utter disappointment (and more lag).
I think may be your memory card is the reason of your problem...
Use your cell without memory card....

Old post I know, but the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have a SD card or any other kind of removable memory card. No Nexus device does.

This a known issue. The solution is to root the phone (NRT) and run LagFix (fstream). Android 4.3 has fstream already built in.

fstrim, not fstream. It means FS TRIM.
