Battery and Clock Color - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey everybody, First Post, Whoop whoop lol Anyway on with the show, I just flashed over to The gingersnap 1.24 Rom from Juggernaut 5.0, reinstalled everything from titanium backup all normal like, and then ran into a little issue with my clock and battery percentage settings... for some reason they are staying green like I had set before and i cannot for the life of me figure out #1. Why this happened/What changed it and #2 How to change it again... I really try not to bother people on here with stupid question but I'm perplexed by this one and was hoping someone might be able to help me figure it out, i attached a picture of what exactly I'm talking about.
Thanks in advance for anytime anyone is willing to put into this

When you say "reinstalled everything using titanium backup, " does that imply you restored system data? If so, don't restore system data ever. Just restore apps and application data.

I have found in titanium settings if I enable migrate system data that it will sometimes work across different ROMs, but still never a sure thing. Usually best between same ROM with updated Android components. I have had it work between totally different ROMs as well sometimes. You can also choose to auto integrate sys dalvick too. These have to both be enabled before you run backup to be effective.
This is just my thoughts and advice be prepared with full nandroid backup, and to test different settings as you may have different setup and things to consider.
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO DO WITH YOUR OWN PERSONAL DEVICE. RUN FULL BACKUPS WHENEVER YOU TRY ANYTHING.

Miui issues: laggy, missing google shortcuts, more

Hey guys,
Despite my post title, I really like MIUI a lot (I'm on Evo with 1.5.20). It's been extremely stable for me, no FCs and the interface is very clean in a way that I like. Its been fine as a daily driver for me and I just have a few issues that are preventing me form staying with it, but I thought I'd ask for help/feedback first:
1) Lagginess: Everything I read about MIUI said it was blazing fact, but on my evo, i find its a bit slow. It doesn't "stutter" in the middle of things like my stock rom, but it just is slow moving. Any feedback on whether this is normal or if I have a setting wrong?
2) Google shortcuts: I used to have shortcuts directly to gmail folder/labels so I could jump right into some filtered email. Now I don't see this capability in MIUI or any direct navigation or call shortcuts, etc. Why?
3) 3G speed: My 3g seems slower and laggy as well. Web pages often get stuck at 10% and then take a long time to resume and load. Any idea why?
4) Bluetooth: I get occasional bluetooth drops if I try to do something else on the phone while talking. For example, I took a business call today, then fired up wifi to look something up while talking and my bluetooth dropped.
5) Sounds/themes: the range of sounds seems limited or not to my liking and the downloadable themes look to "Asia" to me. Any way to get better system sounds and more clean, americanized themes?
6) Clock timer: I used my stock stopwatch or minute timer when BBQing all the time and was shocked to find there isn't one on MIUI. Is here an update or do you just use another app?
Thanks in advance for any help. Despite the list above, its really somethign I am very happy with and haven't had the urge to reflash, but I would like to get these last issues resolved.

Thanks Killa, but I've rebooted before. it's not hugely slow, but sure as heck isn't blazingly fast as many reviews indicated.
Just curious, what did you wipe before you flashed? A few of the issues are common with people who flash a new ROM without wiping. Did you use Calikulin's format all?

I went into recovery, wiped both cache's and did a factory data reset. I don't get any (well, very few) FC's and the phone runs just fine, its just slower than I expected.
You might want to back everything up and use either calks format all or virus superwipe. What recovery are you using? Clockwork had a problem not fully wiping, I dont know if that is still the case. I use amon-ra recovery, myself.

Using clockwork. The problem with half this rooting stuff is everyone is using different tools and its tricky to find where to download them all. A lot of threads and links end up being outdated.
If you have rom manager you can switch to amon-ra through the application. The option is at tge bottom it says flash.alternate recovery, that is amon-ra. You can get calk's format all zip from his threads he has a couple. You can also search by author of thread. His handle is calukin.

Which is the better kernel?

Faux or Bullet included with Juggs 4.1? If you have a preference, tell please me why...
I switched over from bullet after running it a week to fauxs and i must say battery and speed of phone went up so far im diggin it apps open faster and reboot is cut in half if anything

You really should try both out for a few days and find out yourself. There are not too many options out at the moment so trying things out to get a feel for them is best. Also, go and read what has been done to the kernal and read their threads. I understand that you want to get the best of the best right now, but understanding what you're doing to your phone and the differences between the kernals / roms is one of the things XDA is about.

Hi Tri4life, thanks for the reply. I've been reading/researching for months before posting. I have only tried Juggs with the Bullet kernel though because to be quite honest, in my line of work and with all the things I have going on, flashing constantly and having my phone off/on is just not something I can do... I'd love to have an extra GS2 to experiment with, but unfortunately I can't flash and test drive a lot, I need my phone up and running as much as possible being a SQL/Oracle DBA on call basically 24/7 for a major group of hospitals.
If I can figure out a way to quickly restore my apps and settings after a ROM or kernel flash, then maybe I can do this more often, but from what I'm reading folks are saying that's hit or miss, so I've been mostly doing all my app installs and customization from scratch after a flash to a new ROM.. which takes me hours to do..
So basically I'm looking to go with some of the common successful configurations users have had luck with on here.
Faux for me! So smooth and getting 1d battery on it. Bullet doesnt come close i was getting 10 hours on that thing!

Maybe something that might help. I use Titanium backup Pro and Adw Launcher EX. I spent a lot of time gettings things right on ADW and now that I have it I backup its settings. ( this is also placement of items on homescreen ). I then use Titanium to back that up as well as all my other user apps + data. Everything is stored on my sd card. If I plan on formatting I just move my titanium backup folder to a desktop. Then format, mount, and re add to the sd. I have a folder with a few .apks to install first without adding an account. For example the titanium backup. So essentially, everytime I try out a new rom I just install titanium, have it restore my apps and their data. Then I add my account. I will clean this post up later, but it really makes things nice and allows me to install new roms in under 10 mins and keep all my previous settings.

Yes, that is extremely helpful (especially the part about having the TBU.apk ready to install TBU without adding your account and going through the market) I actually paid for Titanium Backup Pro, so I have the full version and should be able to do this.... I've just heard folks saying that this doesn't always work...
As for launchers, I used to use LauncherPro, now I'm trying Go Launcher EX... mostly because I saw folks saying good things about it, it looks like it has more options (especially for theme-ing) and it has also been updated more recently than LauncherPro. I've never tried ADW Launcher Ex... Why do you prefer it over LauncherPro and Go Launcher?
Im using the 006r and havent had an issue it runs quick and smooth and battery is so far better than bullets , i use my phone a lot so better battery is a must the way apps open so fast on this is just a plus for me

Regarding the launcher, its all about simplicity for me. Adw is just as quick and go launcher ( in my opinion ). Also everything I needed adw takes care of. For the most part I would say they are equal competitors, but I just don't need all the extra options or features that Go Launcher provides. But yes I used Go Launcher Ex and even recommend it to my friends. Keep in mind you can do the same backup with it and restore just like ADW. Oh, but one difference I believe is that Go Launcher stores the backups in a separate file and folder as its app. So using titanium wont back that up. It will just stay on your sd card or internal. Doing the normal wipes to install a new ROM wont remove it, but of course a format will. Just a heads up, and also I haven't used Go Launcher in over a month so they probably pushed out a lot of updates and changed that feature.
About Titanium backup. You will have to have both the TBU.apk and the TBUpro.apk to install. The pro key is installed after, else you will have to wipe TB's cache from application settings. Also, if the ROM does not come with a file manager app on it by default then you will have to push with adb the .apks over. Also I think you can just copy/paste them into the app folder as well.
edit- again, I can give you my exact steps when I get home tonight. Just typing quite fast here at work.

Im using 0.0.7, its the one that comes with the rom Dewizzed. I think from 0.0.6 to 7 it just changes from a tmobile boot image to a custom one. I tried 0.0.6u with Beastmod, and it boot looped, im not sure if it had issues with beastmod or what, and ended up using DeWizzed as my rom after that instead which i think is 0.0.7r.
Im using the original modem, as im a Telus user(no wifi calling here).
I believe both kernels have most of the same features, Bullet may have more governors IIRC.
I just did a battery calibration starting yesterday actually and im at 20% after 1 day 14 hours. Not heavy usage, but i find while i use was using it there wasnt much drain.
And as i said, its SO smooth.
"I have a folder with a few .apks to install first without adding an account. For example the titanium backup. So essentially, everytime I try out a new rom I just install titanium" ... Great idea.
I'm saving Titanium Backup (com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup-1) and ROM Manager (com.koushikdutta.rommanager-1) in a folder so that I can reinstall them quick without having to log in and grab them from the Google Market. Good thinkin'

Basic noob rooting questions

The question: Can I root a phone to try apps without affecting my updated ICS fix from sprint and without changing how my phone looks and feels?
My assumption: When I root it uses a ROM that someone "hacked" and it overwrites my updated ICS update.
The facts: I got the original ICS roll-out from sprint and very recently also the "fix" update to ICS from OTA. I have never rooted a phone and I'm thinking about it because my battery life has gone to hell, and my signal strength is a mess.
I'd also like to get mass storage options back to get compatibility with a usb head unit.

I was waiting to see of anyone else was going to respond but since I'm going to call it a night, I'll throw my 2 cents in, then I'll wait for my change..
I had to ask about the "second" update since the only thing i know is this- The original roll out was paused, then when it started up again, small fixes were noticed. One being the Swype issue. Not big changes according to some.
So to answer your question about rooting to try apps, just use sfhubs one click for ff18. Clear the cache on Swype after that. Then try your apps..
I'd suggest reading up on backing up your data, etc, so when you notice that stock battery life, look and feel and all of that isn't different, and you want to go back, you can.
Or just save all of that trouble and root and flash the stock tweaked ics rom, with a custom kernal, and enjoy a stock, rooted, long lasting daily experience..

Ok. So when you say stock tweaked ics rom you are saying that it's going to overwrite the updated ics i got through ota? I also don't want to lose my contacts and apps that are installed and also all the"theme" work I've done to this. I just want less Los.. More battery life and usb mass storage feature back.

The stock tweaked rom is located on the Dev section. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29788992
For your concerns, you can attempt to address issue by issue.
Sync contacts w google.
Change modems to address the los issues you have.
Use titanium backup for your apps.
Use a custom kernel for your battery life.
And use sfhubs storage mode fix.
Or, sync contacts w google, use tb for your apps and find a great rom that addresses the rest of the issues.
You keep saying something about an update to ics, but the latest ff18 rom builds have all ics and more..
(and of course you can always go back stock of you choose..)

Ok so bear with me here.
If I do the latter as you suggest (and I greatly appreciate your time and answers) would I have to personalize my phone all over again like it was new out of the box or does TB restore my apps like nothing ever happened?
I'm getting really close to pulling the trigger here but it makes me nervous because I do so very much business with my outlook account, GPS, messaging and WIFI.
If I screw it up I'll be dead in the water with no love from our IT department haha.
I come as a PC power user. overclocking, hacking etc. Is TB like when I make a exact image of my operating system and all it's contents and then if something goes wrong I can just blast it to a HDD and it's like nothing ever happened?
I have trouble leaving things be when they "work".
Thanks again.

First off, you're welcome. And if I say something off kilter about what you are wanting to do, believe me there will be people that say so. (Surprisingly, It's a quiet thread)
What you would refer to as an img in PC, Nandroid is what you would call it here. You can find out all about that with a very helpful guide [TUT] What Is Nandroid And How To Use It [Complete Guide] [VeNuM]
Be sure to use it if you're that dependent on your phone for work.
Speaking of which, if you don't have a backup plan for your phone, I'd hold off on puling that trigger until you have read all that you can.
Using Titanium Backup, as with any software, can fail. Be sure to know how to backup and restore and when and what you can restore. Don't go from ICS to GB and try without expecting issues. There are other apps as well, MybackupPro, astro file manager.. Just do your homework.
Having a nandroid is essential for me. If you rename the backup, do NOT put any spaces in the name. It's also a strong suggestion to verify md5 if you plan on moving and storing - Don't delete the original without verifying the copy with md5. Just search for a md5 checker.
If you do decide to flash, good luck. Ton's of smarter people than me here tat can help, just make a backup..
I've been reading my butt off here but I still don't have a grasp of the rooting.
When I root a phone doesn't it overwrite all my stuff? Then how would I be able to use Titanium Back up to back up all my previous stuff?
I bet I'll understand much better once I actually root it but like you said I'm trying to get a grasp of it all before I commit.
Rooting alone, no.
If you use sfhubs ff18, rooted, no data, you will not lose your current setup and data. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27635571
You'll just be rooted.
For TB I'll refer you to this - http://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/titanium-backup-kb

[Q] Multiple issues after transferring with Titanium Backup

Just to let people know, I'm a relative noob to Android in general and particularly to this site, so have some patience.
My wife's Samsung Galaxy S 4g's screen broke, so she got the T989 as a replacement. After doing some research, it seems that Titanium Backup was the recommended way to move data over. So, I needed to educate myself on how to do that. The original phone was easy and I did the backup. The S II was less easy and after spending way too much time on the i9100 forum, I found out I was in the wrong place.
So, anyways, got her phone jailbroken and ran TB on it to restore. Unfortunately, it seems to be the beginning of my problems. Phone app didn't work. Cleared data there, which she lost her contacts. TWLauncher throws errors. Clear data there as well. Messaging hasn't worked either, and it seems to be the solution is to wipe the whole thing. I also can't seem to browse the file system via USB.
What am I doing wrong here? All I wanted to do was to move everything over from the old phone to the new one, but it seems I bought trouble.
You are reporting a back up from a completely different phone. Restoring data will often cause things to go funny. It's usually recommended to simply restore the app and nothing more. I would recommend just resetting the phone back to stock, full wipe and don't restore anything. See how it functions initially, then once you think things are going well, just start to restore apps.
 cheers

It's going to depend on the app really. Some apps don't play well with some roms. I've backed up games and restored to current roms and been fine, while others didn't restore correctly. Trial and error my friend, trial and error.

[Q] Major lag from touch screen suddenly

Hello.
I have posted this in the forums at Android Central and only got one response. I've had my phone since Feb of this year. Since 11/2 there is major lag. No issues on 11/1. Taps on the home screen are continuously being read as long presses. My lock screen is really laggy, as are home screens and most apps. Bad piggies for whatever reason is working just fine. Most other apps including the keyboard are very laggy. It just seems to be very slow to respond to touch all of a sudden. My phone is rooted stock GB. At AC, I was told an app was hogging RAM. I downloaded Memory Useage from the google play store but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm still getting that lady after killing and uninstalling apps. The lag is still there with the native launcher so I really don't think it has anything to do with GO Launcher. I used TiB to revert GOL back to the previous version. I also uninstalled GOLocker as well. I've done a soft reset but it didn't help.
Is there a way to see my Play update history so I can see which apps installed that night? I've always had the occasional lag but it wasn't ever really a big deal. This is greatly interfering with my use of the phone. I am lucky to type a word before the keyboard disappears. Low resources makes sense but I just can't figure out what app is hogging them.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of resting back to unrooted GB to upgrade to stock ICS.
The first app in the my apps list is the most recent one. So start uninstalling from the top.. Now if you had installed an app say 2 months ago, uninstalled it a month ago and then reinstalled it today then it won't show at the top of the list. It will be still at that same spot where it was 2 months ago. So keep in mind if you reinstalled some app.
Also you should uninstall apps from applications in settings so you can clear cache and data for that app. Or you restart after each uninstall.

This is so frustrating. In the Play Store App, my "Installed" list is alphabetical and the "All" list is listed by install order with the most recent at the top regardless of timestamp of update. I cannot see any option for changing the order. Should I just go by the TiB list? It is showing the apps in order of update and lets me clear cache and uninstall the apps.

Now I have removed all apps updated on 11/2 or overnight from the evening of 11/1. The only one I can't touch is Kies. I have frozen it with TiB but I'm still getting the super heavy lag. What can I do next? Do I need to just reset the whole device now and start from scratch?
This is really frustrating. I love my phone and haven't had it long enough to switch to something else. Are there any tests that I can perform to check on the screen itself?
I have also installed OS Monitor and the top apps using up the CPU are OS Monitor, SYstem, Google Play Movies & TV, Android System, gzip. THe % used varies from 0% up to 26% they may last only a second or two. Is there something wrong with my phone? I feel like I've exhausted finding a resource hog.
If you have a custom recovery installed then do a nandroid backup and flash a fresh install of something to test it. If its not broke in the test then you can restore tour backup and continue to troubleshoot. Honestly though its easy enough to just start fresh. I do it every few days/weeks on a new rom.
Heck at this point flash something ICS or even JB. I can't think of a reason to ever use a GB rom again.

Do you have a JB recommendation? I haven't created a nandroid backup because the only one I am aware of with with CWM and I have been told more than once that it isn't reliable on the E4GT so I just completed removed it from my phone. Are there any other methods for getting a nandroid backup?

I'm currently using codename, great rom. I've only used my nandroid backups several times but they do work. Always just made my backup in whatever custom recovery I was using at the time. Can't remember what recovery I used on GB. Its been a while. Edit just use the el26 blues mentioned above
When switching between ROMs or experimenting I use SMS backup and restore and call log backup and restore from market. Its nice to have those old texts and call logs sometimes.
I use SMS Backup cuz I want to save my texts but I don't know if I need to save my call log.
Thanks for the recommendation. Paranoid Android looks pretty cool.
My external SD card is safe right? Does it need to be backed up as well?

External SD never gets wiped during a rom flash. Even internal sd card doesn't.
What's your opinion on Triangle away? Is it safe to use on my e4gt? Just in case this doesn't work, I'll need to reset my count.

I have used once when I flashed jb tar and it worked. I prefer mobile Odin over desktop Odin to flash. Mobile Odin means no triangle.

I use triangle away all the time, I never use mobile Odin. I think its more risky, not sure why, its all in my head
Thanks. One more question and hopefully we're done here.
I noticed that on the paranoid Android site, they no longer have OTAs. How do you get updates? Do you have to flash each time?

Do any of you find it odd that bad piggies seems to be immune to this lag issue? I played it on my to work this morning. Other apps get bogged down. Thank you all for your help and advice.

Custom roms typically require manual updates. Very few update automatically and i have never tried paranoid.
I'm not even sure what bad piggies is.
