[Q] Major lag from touch screen suddenly - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hello.
I have posted this in the forums at Android Central and only got one response. I've had my phone since Feb of this year. Since 11/2 there is major lag. No issues on 11/1. Taps on the home screen are continuously being read as long presses. My lock screen is really laggy, as are home screens and most apps. Bad piggies for whatever reason is working just fine. Most other apps including the keyboard are very laggy. It just seems to be very slow to respond to touch all of a sudden. My phone is rooted stock GB. At AC, I was told an app was hogging RAM. I downloaded Memory Useage from the google play store but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm still getting that lady after killing and uninstalling apps. The lag is still there with the native launcher so I really don't think it has anything to do with GO Launcher. I used TiB to revert GOL back to the previous version. I also uninstalled GOLocker as well. I've done a soft reset but it didn't help.
Is there a way to see my Play update history so I can see which apps installed that night? I've always had the occasional lag but it wasn't ever really a big deal. This is greatly interfering with my use of the phone. I am lucky to type a word before the keyboard disappears. Low resources makes sense but I just can't figure out what app is hogging them.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of resting back to unrooted GB to upgrade to stock ICS.

The first app in the my apps list is the most recent one. So start uninstalling from the top.. Now if you had installed an app say 2 months ago, uninstalled it a month ago and then reinstalled it today then it won't show at the top of the list. It will be still at that same spot where it was 2 months ago. So keep in mind if you reinstalled some app.
Also you should uninstall apps from applications in settings so you can clear cache and data for that app. Or you restart after each uninstall.

Thanks but my only options are Sort by Size and Sort Alphabetically. Are you talking about the applications list in Settings? Or is there a better place to uninstall? I know I can go into TiB as well.

This is so frustrating. In the Play Store App, my "Installed" list is alphabetical and the "All" list is listed by install order with the most recent at the top regardless of timestamp of update. I cannot see any option for changing the order. Should I just go by the TiB list? It is showing the apps in order of update and lets me clear cache and uninstall the apps.

Now I have removed all apps updated on 11/2 or overnight from the evening of 11/1. The only one I can't touch is Kies. I have frozen it with TiB but I'm still getting the super heavy lag. What can I do next? Do I need to just reset the whole device now and start from scratch?
This is really frustrating. I love my phone and haven't had it long enough to switch to something else. Are there any tests that I can perform to check on the screen itself?
I have also installed OS Monitor and the top apps using up the CPU are OS Monitor, SYstem, Google Play Movies & TV, Android System, gzip. THe % used varies from 0% up to 26% they may last only a second or two. Is there something wrong with my phone? I feel like I've exhausted finding a resource hog.

If you have a custom recovery installed then do a nandroid backup and flash a fresh install of something to test it. If its not broke in the test then you can restore tour backup and continue to troubleshoot. Honestly though its easy enough to just start fresh. I do it every few days/weeks on a new rom.
Heck at this point flash something ICS or even JB. I can't think of a reason to ever use a GB rom again.

Do you have a JB recommendation? I haven't created a nandroid backup because the only one I am aware of with with CWM and I have been told more than once that it isn't reliable on the E4GT so I just completed removed it from my phone. Are there any other methods for getting a nandroid backup?

Paranoid android 2.50. You can make a nandroid backup from el26 kernel with cwm of an pics rom.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA

I'm currently using codename, great rom. I've only used my nandroid backups several times but they do work. Always just made my backup in whatever custom recovery I was using at the time. Can't remember what recovery I used on GB. Its been a while. Edit just use the el26 blues mentioned above
When switching between ROMs or experimenting I use SMS backup and restore and call log backup and restore from market. Its nice to have those old texts and call logs sometimes.

I use SMS Backup cuz I want to save my texts but I don't know if I need to save my call log.
Thanks for the recommendation. Paranoid Android looks pretty cool.
My external SD card is safe right? Does it need to be backed up as well?

External SD never gets wiped during a rom flash. Even internal sd card doesn't.

What's your opinion on Triangle away? Is it safe to use on my e4gt? Just in case this doesn't work, I'll need to reset my count.

I have used once when I flashed jb tar and it worked. I prefer mobile Odin over desktop Odin to flash. Mobile Odin means no triangle.

I use triangle away all the time, I never use mobile Odin. I think its more risky, not sure why, its all in my head

Thanks. One more question and hopefully we're done here.
I noticed that on the paranoid Android site, they no longer have OTAs. How do you get updates? Do you have to flash each time?

Do any of you find it odd that bad piggies seems to be immune to this lag issue? I played it on my to work this morning. Other apps get bogged down. Thank you all for your help and advice.

Custom roms typically require manual updates. Very few update automatically and i have never tried paranoid.
I'm not even sure what bad piggies is.

FC Launcher Pro Backup Notes?

Phone randomly got FC's on launcher pro whenever I try to go to the Homepage, so it is barely usable at the moment. Like a dummy I haven't done any nandroid backup in the last few months, but i want to save my notes from the NOTES app. I keep a little log of ideas and notes that I will lose the last few months worth if I can't figure out how to salvage it. ANyone have any clue? If anyone can recommend a way to save the SMS's and Shazam stuff as well it would be a bonus
My problem is I can't get to any of my programs since the homepage won't load up, but I can get into my SMS's if I go to my contacts and sms from there. I did do a SMS backup to my computer with some program called MobileGo. It seems pretty thorough, but I haven't tested since I'm waiting to restore my phone until after I get my notes. Thanks!
I can view my SD card files easily but I can't seem to get it to browse my internal storage...unless i'm forgetting something I assume that is where my notes would be?? Need help...

do you have titanium back up?
if you do go into that fin luancher pro and clear the data
Can you walk me through the steps...I can't get to any homepage or open up programs so not sure how I would get into titanium backup or launcher pro. If we could just figure out where notes stores its data I could back that up then do a fresh install and drag and replace the new one with the old, I assume.
First do a nandroid back up from cwm assuming your rooted. That way nothing that is done to it can't be reversed. Second what actually happens when you reboot the phone?

I am rooted and can do a nandroid backup from cwm...When I boot up the phone it loads everything then force closes constantly when launcher pro tries to load...I can cheat past to make calls if i press the home button quickly and tap the phone icon. I'll do the backup now.
Backup successful...Am i wrong to assume if I do a clean install and reinstall my ACS rom all succesful then restore my nandroid backup that my notes will be restored? If not then I'll do that and thanks. Otherwise, I'm still trying to save my notes. Bumpsky
You can try. Asking as you have back your now in a position that you can experiment. When you boot the phone does it immediately crash. Can you get to the app drawer. Then to market. Then titanium backup. Backup notes app and data. Reflash then restore notrs

Just spitballing here but can't you download another home launcher like zeam from a computer... it'll push it to your phone and when its done downloading press home key and set that one as your main launcher.... then delete the faulty one and reinstall it?
You could try reflashing your rom clean and doing an advanced data restore in cwm. Not sure if that would work but it's worth a shot.
Edit: also i believe there is a way to restore apps from a nandroid in titanium if you flash clean. I've never done it, but I've read about people doing that.

Basic noob rooting questions

The question: Can I root a phone to try apps without affecting my updated ICS fix from sprint and without changing how my phone looks and feels?
My assumption: When I root it uses a ROM that someone "hacked" and it overwrites my updated ICS update.
The facts: I got the original ICS roll-out from sprint and very recently also the "fix" update to ICS from OTA. I have never rooted a phone and I'm thinking about it because my battery life has gone to hell, and my signal strength is a mess.
I'd also like to get mass storage options back to get compatibility with a usb head unit.

I was waiting to see of anyone else was going to respond but since I'm going to call it a night, I'll throw my 2 cents in, then I'll wait for my change..
I had to ask about the "second" update since the only thing i know is this- The original roll out was paused, then when it started up again, small fixes were noticed. One being the Swype issue. Not big changes according to some.
So to answer your question about rooting to try apps, just use sfhubs one click for ff18. Clear the cache on Swype after that. Then try your apps..
I'd suggest reading up on backing up your data, etc, so when you notice that stock battery life, look and feel and all of that isn't different, and you want to go back, you can.
Or just save all of that trouble and root and flash the stock tweaked ics rom, with a custom kernal, and enjoy a stock, rooted, long lasting daily experience..

The stock tweaked rom is located on the Dev section. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29788992
For your concerns, you can attempt to address issue by issue.
Sync contacts w google.
Change modems to address the los issues you have.
Use titanium backup for your apps.
Use a custom kernel for your battery life.
And use sfhubs storage mode fix.
Or, sync contacts w google, use tb for your apps and find a great rom that addresses the rest of the issues.
You keep saying something about an update to ics, but the latest ff18 rom builds have all ics and more..
(and of course you can always go back stock of you choose..)
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Ok so bear with me here.
If I do the latter as you suggest (and I greatly appreciate your time and answers) would I have to personalize my phone all over again like it was new out of the box or does TB restore my apps like nothing ever happened?
I'm getting really close to pulling the trigger here but it makes me nervous because I do so very much business with my outlook account, GPS, messaging and WIFI.
If I screw it up I'll be dead in the water with no love from our IT department haha.
I come as a PC power user. overclocking, hacking etc. Is TB like when I make a exact image of my operating system and all it's contents and then if something goes wrong I can just blast it to a HDD and it's like nothing ever happened?
I have trouble leaving things be when they "work".
Thanks again.

First off, you're welcome. And if I say something off kilter about what you are wanting to do, believe me there will be people that say so. (Surprisingly, It's a quiet thread)
What you would refer to as an img in PC, Nandroid is what you would call it here. You can find out all about that with a very helpful guide [TUT] What Is Nandroid And How To Use It [Complete Guide] [VeNuM]
Be sure to use it if you're that dependent on your phone for work.
Speaking of which, if you don't have a backup plan for your phone, I'd hold off on puling that trigger until you have read all that you can.
Using Titanium Backup, as with any software, can fail. Be sure to know how to backup and restore and when and what you can restore. Don't go from ICS to GB and try without expecting issues. There are other apps as well, MybackupPro, astro file manager.. Just do your homework.
Having a nandroid is essential for me. If you rename the backup, do NOT put any spaces in the name. It's also a strong suggestion to verify md5 if you plan on moving and storing - Don't delete the original without verifying the copy with md5. Just search for a md5 checker.
If you do decide to flash, good luck. Ton's of smarter people than me here tat can help, just make a backup..
I've been reading my butt off here but I still don't have a grasp of the rooting.
When I root a phone doesn't it overwrite all my stuff? Then how would I be able to use Titanium Back up to back up all my previous stuff?
I bet I'll understand much better once I actually root it but like you said I'm trying to get a grasp of it all before I commit.
Rooting alone, no.
If you use sfhubs ff18, rooted, no data, you will not lose your current setup and data. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27635571
You'll just be rooted.
For TB I'll refer you to this - http://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/titanium-backup-kb

I've never seen a local backup that will do anything more than install a specific version of an app. I want the market app this is up to date and for my current OS. Also I want them to keep receiving updates. If I backed up my apps on 2.3.3 GB Inspire 4G they wouldn't do me much good on ICS GSIII. For that matter some of my ICS apps may trip up JB. I wish I could go on google play, put checkmarks next to the apps I want and have play load them. I hate going through 3 or four screens to install each app. It's as annoying as User Access Control on Win Vista/7.
Sorry but I'm a noon but is there a tutorial on how to use titanium backup to restore multiple apps?

Google Sync picks up most apps for you. Off course you need to have Google Sync enabled.
As far as data and other complete backup of apps and new versions of the apps you should purchase TiBu. Titanium Backup a must have for Android users.
If the ROM you flash has the option to "restore from Google" while entering your Google login during initial setup of the ROM, then all your apps will be restored.
If you don't get that option, then they won't be restored.
There is no secret setting in Google Play to get the apps to auto-install after the fact.

Galaxy nexus gone slow

Hi. My phone (on Stock unrooted 4.1.2, didn't upgrade to 4.2.2 for no reason) has recently become very, very slow. I guess the reason for that is that I recently copied an MKV movie to it. Ever since I did that, it has been dead slow. Even though I have deleted it now, the sluggishness still persists. There's nothing else that I did (ever since this problem started), and please note, my phone was blazing fast before this, so I don't expect suggestions to flash a new ROM or kernel (because I'm a noob when it comes to flashing ROMs and stuff, and I will have so many more problems doing so). I think my phone can go back to the state on stock ROM and kernel.
Another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988233) mentions the same problem, I've found out that I have the exact same problem. My phone wasn't sluggish before I copied the movie. But now that I have removed it, the phone is stil slow and sluggish*
* what does it mean when i say "slow and sluggish":
- pressing the lock button doesn't turn the screen on, i have to do it a couple of times
- apps take longer to load
- widgets don't load (most of them)
- everything that you can imagine (swiping, sliding, etc) is slow.
Help, please. Thanks in advance.

It may be caused by installing too many RAM-hogging apps, if you're rooted you can try using Greenify from the play store and see if that helps.

If it's the Gallery, go into all applications instead of downloaded.

I didn't copy the movie for playing, I copied it to transfer it somewhere else. And I've cleared cache of the video player MX Player just to be sure, and uninstalled it. Still no use.
One more thing. Apps are not responding, even stock apps. Once I open an app, it takes forever to load, and the message pops up: "<app> is not responding, would you like to stop it?" with the options "wait, stop, report".
All this has started ever since I copied that movie to my phone. Before that, it was blazing fast, no RAM hogging apps or anything.
How about you try to save all your pics/files you have on your phone, and do a factory reset? I know that's the highest you will go, but still worth a shot!

Noob question, and I'd rather google it; but now since I have an expert in reach, I'd prefer asking. How do you backup?

SMS backup and restore - for SMS ( When and IF I need to back some up ), Titanium Backup for everything else ( if you are rooted ) - though, lately I'm using Carbon - you can back up your sms, data, everything you need without root ...

Okay, I found "Helium" to do the backup job just right. Now, how to restore?
P.S. Just updated to 4.2.2 to find utter disappointment (and more lag).
I think may be your memory card is the reason of your problem...
Use your cell without memory card....

Old post I know, but the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have a SD card or any other kind of removable memory card. No Nexus device does.

This a known issue. The solution is to root the phone (NRT) and run LagFix (fstream). Android 4.3 has fstream already built in.

fstrim, not fstream. It means FS TRIM.

so I've rooted my OGP. Now what?

Rooted it today. First android phone I've ever owned (though been jailbreaking since 2009).
I installed Ttanium Backup, and i think i backed up my apps and data, but not exactly sure where to, as i don't have an SD card in it yet. If I backed up to the phone, I'm guessing that's mostly useless. But I'm new to this stuff so i don't really know.
So, now that i have root access, what apps should i be installing?
What stuff should i be uninstalling or freezing?
What cool things can i now do that i couldn't do yesterday?
Anything specific to the OGP that i should or should not do?

You can block ads, search adaway here on xda since Google recently rid the store of all ad blocking apps. You can use programs like sqlite editor to enable hotspot even if you're not subscribed to a plan that supports it. You can use xposed framework also here on xda (under our phones themes and apps) to apply themes to the phone. You can disable built in apps using titanium backup. Also, you should install Cwm under android development for our phone and make a nandroid backup in case you ever screw up your phone.
Best of all, you can install greenify root to make your battery last a lot longer. It hibernates apps for you that would normally run in the background.
When we have our bootloader unlocked is when the real fun will start though.

Thank you!
Couple more questions...I was able to do a search for adaway, and found it, but you mention (under our phones themes and apps), and could not find that. Is there a section that just has XDA Apps in it? All I was able to find was forums, and not repositories (don't know if that's the right word).
Basic newbie question...if an app is listed as being for Jellybean 4.1, can we use it even it was made for a Galaxy S3 for example? If it's Jellybean 4.1 is it good to go?
As to adaway...if you disable ads, will some programs refuse to run?
Is the hotspot app, safe for my phone bill?
If you "disable" apps using titanium backup, does it remove them from the phone, or just hide them? What is freezing an app? And if later you want to have them back (let's say for a trip to the cell store) are they readily returned to view?
I was under the impression (probably wrongly) that CWM at this point could brick our phone. Am I mistaken? And where does the nandroid backup get stored? Hopefully not on the phone...
I ask a lot of the above questions as being a new android user (2-weeks now), I'm clicking or checking out everything I see on the phone (and in the store(s) to learn about what it can do. I'm also installing a ton of apps that are new to me, and I've also gone to some non-Google Play stores to DL some stuff. I know that sooner or later I'm going to want to restore the phone to factory stock to get rid of conflicts, viruses (virii?), and anything that does not play well with other stuff. So, during this learning quest, I assume I'm going to frag the phone in some way, and will have the need to return it to stock (hopefully without needing to go back to the store)!!! I just want to have a bit of assurance that with everything I do, I can get back to stock.
Lastly, is there anything somewhat similar to iTunes that will make a restore a bit less time consuming. Is Titanium Backup what I"m searchnig for?
Wasn't aware of greenify root.. will give that one a go right now!

Thanks for mention greenify root, I install it. It's a hit!!
Now that I'm rooted (and installed some associated apps) I've noticed some laggy operation. When I'm on pretty much any of the home screens, and click on the app drawer icon, I'm brought to the page where I see "Apps", "Downloads", and "Widgets" at the top, but occasionally I have a blank screen below that. It stays blank for anywhere from one to three seconds and then the apps and folders appear. Sometimes they will show up instantly, but quite often there is a few second lag. The only things I've installed since rooting are Root Checker, Titanium Backup and Greenify. I'm not sure whether it is the root or the new apps, so I guess I can uninstall the three apps and see.
I also seem to be getting the circling "please wait" message more often than in the past.
Anybody else experiencing this? And does this sound like a root issue or an issue from one of the three apps?
