Literally every time i check for software updates i get
"Communication failed"
The server is currently unavailable.
Your device will automatically check for an update within the next 48 hours.
Then if i check again it says device is up to date, you can check for updates again in XXhours. If i go into application manager -> AT&T Software Update and clear data, i can check for updates again but i get the same communication failed. I also tried clearing data and rebooting phone, and it still wont check.
And i can't get Samsung Kies running on my windows 7 pc for some reason, so i can't get updates from there either.
Is anyone else on AT&T experiencing these problems? Any fix for this? I really want that update that adds brightness control to the notification menu.

I did not update, but hearing that update would disable local search, add new modem. Nothing about Brightness control
There is no brightness control on ATT update. I was having the same problem you were and exchanged the phone. There is no fix as far as I know for the error you are getting. It is a common issue. Search the annoyances (bugs) thread.
I don't know if the OTA update resolves your issue because they day after I exchanged mine the update came out.

I also haven't been able to get the OTA update. I assumed it was because I rooted and the device is listed as 'modified'. Is the update worth it?
It is in my opinion, and my usage habbits, for the WiFi stability increase that is gained.
Universal search is stripped (searches conducted on phone do not include on device results, ie contacts).
In other words, if you use the Google search by long pressing your menu button the results from your search will only be pulled from the internet.
I rarely use the search built in, so it hardly mattered to me.
Check out the developer forum for ways around the universal strip if you are rooted and want to update.

Well i reseated the SIM card, and removed the little blue tape from the sd slot and the SIM slot, rebooted and still not working.
I wanted to avoid rooting, since the stock software runs so smoothly and i liked being on the latest at&t software. I guess since i can't get OTA updates now theres no reason not to root.
Will this issue be fixed eventually? Or would i be better off exchanging phones while i can?
I'd exchange it. If you have faulty hardware then rooting won't do anything for you.
Peace of mind, if anything, that if you decide to root your phone is functioning as it should from the start.
Others will argue it's software issues.
But, whatever the cause, none of us paid to have a 90% functioning phone from the factory. Go get what you paid for is my take on it.
Good luck.

Well speaking as a software engineer, i'm almost certain its a software issue, most likely with at&t's software update app, or on their servers. Mabey reinstalling the at&t software update application will help?
It sounds reasonable to me. Maybe try the method for No trip flash counter in devoplment? You would be upgrading to the newest firmware and have root and not trip the flash counter. You would still be able to check for ota updates (although should just return the status of your software is up to date since it is a totally stock ROM just with root injected). I imagine that would reinstall the software update service. Although with your knowledge you are way over my head. And whether or not when updating ROMs if that application is reinstalled is something I can't answer.
Maybe just try this first:
Settings> Application Manager> All> AT&T Software Update> Clear Data> Confirm
Power off Phone
Remove battery for at least thirty seconds.
Reinstall battery and power on device.
Try again after device boots up.

I've been having this same problem
I was thinking that its because of AT&T's controlled release of the OTA.
Its been so long since the release, that I can't imagine that's still true. I also agree that its probably a software thing. I have a number of the bloat apps disabled and also wonder if one or more of those would interfere with such a thing.
I'd love to hear about a resolution.

That's an interesting theory, I've disabled some boatware too. Have you tried enabling them? I'm going to try that now.

So, if it's a software issue why is it two identical devices running the same software from the factory yield different results? I.e. my first device would do exactly as your original post outlines, then my replacement device had no issue checking for updates (same stock software, same device form factor).
If you search there are a lot of examples of complaints of this exact issue.
I am also very interested in this because even though there are many complaints out there, the only answers seem to be;
1) who cares this is xda and we update through Odin/cwm etc...
2) replace it.
Good luck, I hope you guys find an answer.

I haven't tried enabling everything. I've tried enabling 'Samsung Push' which seemed like the likely starting point. I've been trying to do some debug on some battery drain things, so I've been hesitant to change too much at once. Also, I can basically only check every 24 hours so its slow going.
As far as the hardware issue, it just doesn't make too much sense that a hardware issue would be causing a problem because the software update would presumably be using the same hardware as the rest of the working smartphone functions. I think the explanation to one device updating and one not is more likely a server device id filtering or a user changing more than 'just the new hardware'.
Its neither here nor there though. Everyone will have there hair brained theories. Why don't we start asking what features will be on the next iphone. Seriously though, apple has to add a removable battery right? (I'm just kidding, please don't spam a million responses about how that will or will not ever happen.)

You can bypass the wait time between checks by going into application managment -> at&t software update and clearing data. Then you can try to update again.

I've had similar issues checking for updates. i gave up and pulled the first update with the USALG1 rom posted in the development forum sticky. I too have several apps disabled (actually moved out of the system/app dir) and was wondering if that possibly caused issues. I never did try updating through kies though.
My kies wont even run on my windows 7 64 bit. There seems to be alot of people having problems with kies on win7 64 bit, nothing from samsung either. So theres really no way for me to get updates
This is How I Got My Phone to Update
I should add that this was my 2nd galaxy s3 to not update. I did a factory reset hoping it would fix the issue. It didn't. I called att customer care for help b/c I was thinking maybe they just set up my account incorrectly when I first got the phone. Nothing else really makes sense. They said they couldn't help and take it to the store. I took it to an att store, and they said they don't actually do any software troubleshooting, so they just exchanged it for a new one. I tried doing the update there, it failed, so I took it home, and I force closed all the update apps, cleared all their data, and it worked as soon as I hit update. If force closing and clearing the data from the att and samsung update apps doesn't help, There may be nothing else you can do except take it in to an att shop.

When you got it to work, exactly what apps did you force close and clear data? Just AT&T software update? Any others?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I force closed the At&T Software Update app and I think the Samsung Push Service. It is really the AT&T software update app that finally started downloading immediately after trying it again.
So I finally attempted the Keis connection and it worked immediately. I don't know what other problems people are having, but when I installed it on my Win7 x64 machine I had the S3 connected. After I ran the software for the first time it mentioned an update and proceeded to update it. Keep fighting the good fight jefferson9.

Like most others you will wake up one morning and it will be on 76, there is a way to do it manually but you need to get your msl. Google update prl manually if you are concerned about. It won't make that much difference unless you travel alot, roam a lot, or you are in one of the areas that had a roaming tower switch.
Rethinking this prl error thing. I Odin'd back to DI18 and tried the PRL update and still no go. Let the OTA update to EC05, no go. Called Sprint and he (of course) had me go through a few different resets and still no go, even got me locked in an activation loop. So somewhere along the way my update ability was broken. Was it something in DK28? Since it broke GPS's and some USB connections. Not sure but luckily with insurance I will be getting a new phone next week to see what works. My g/f's phone has gone mostly the same path as mine but prl updates fine. All phones are not created equal.
It's Sprint's problem. I wish they just would know and admit that. We're stuck at 60676 for now anyway. Manual updates are the way to go if you must. I think folks have been using QPST.
Sprint has basically acknowledged the issue on their support forum. I tried to post the URL but this site wouldn't let me.
Of course, acknowledgement and fixing it are 2 very different things. I don't think they know the root cause particularly at the technician level. They just send you through some resets and then offer to swap your phone.
I wonder if this will be fixed in the next OTA update?

Hmm...maybe. But why do the new phones work, unless it is something in the first batch of Epics that went out, if so then why does the 2nd phone on my account update fine? If both phones purchased at the same time were not updating then I wouldn't question it, but the fact that 1 does and 1 don't bothers me and makes me feel like something in the rooting process or ROM flashing knocked it out. I have seen the posts on Sprint, but I think it is due to the amount of reports that they have gotten and have no idea what is wrong. Once they get my phone back, they will have another one to work with.

My phone updated fine when I got it in mid Jan 2011. I started getting update errors about a week BEFORE the 2.2 OTA update. I have never rooted and am completely stock. My guess is there is a software glitch on some phones or the servers that is preventing the handshake between the phone and the servers for updating. It could be that Sprint has unknowingly programed their servers for some ESN's not to update. I just hope they find the root cause and fix it.

Maybe...certain ESNs? Trying to lock out first Gen Epics? Every theory I come up with gets blown. I imagine both phones on my account are the same gen purchased a week after they came out. I guess I have to let it go and be happy with a new phone next week.

Hey guys, I'm new here, so this thread is probably on here somewhere, but oh well. I can't update my S3 OTA or through Kies. I know there is an update, as my friend got it fine on his yesterday (it's the one with the brightness slider in notification center). On OTA, it says communication failed every single time, then says up to date. I have tried clearing data and all that as well. And in Kies, it also says I have the latest firmware, even though I know I don't. Any ideas? I really don't want this happening when Jelly Bean comes out. Oh yeah, I'm not rooted or anything by the way, I'm still on stock for now.
I have the same exact issue. I think it has something to do with ATT and the phone not being set up right in their system. Did you by chance have an iPhone before your S3 and use the same Sim card?
Mine wouldn't find the ota on the phone. I searched around here and found a thread someone had started that has instructions on how to download the flashable zip and install it via CWM. Worked like a champ. If you are rooted this is the way you'll want to go

I've always recommended returning whatever device you have back to 100% stock (as it was out of the box) before taking any official updates. I've heard ppl say they can take them just fine while still rooted - but they lose root. Sometimes you can simply re-root, sometimes you have to wait for a new exploit to be discovered before you can root again. In light of this, I always wait a week (sometimes less) after a new OTA (Over The Air) update is released, just to be sure I can regain root immediately. Welcome to the wonderful world of Android OS!!!
[edit] to answer your post about not being able to take the last OTA update. Have you tried a factory reset? Through Android Recovery? You will lose personal settings and contacts if you dont back them up. But, it may solve your update issue. Another thing I know, that a lot of ppl do is - as soon as you buy a new device, such as the awesome Galaxy S III, is to immediately do the factory reset. (Who knows how many employees have goofed around with the new toys they just got in stock)
I had the same problem with not being able to get the OTA update on my S3. Turns out it was a bad sim. As soon as I got a new sim from AT&T everything worked fine. Wish I would have done that first cause I spent hours on the phone with AT&T and Samsung trying to fix the problem. Good luck. Hope that works for you.

Same issue here. Just spent a couple hours this Saturday at an AT&T store - end result is that they are swapping it out under the manufacture 1 year warranty.
Sim replacement did not fix it for me.
Tech support over the the stores land line says that the option to push OTA to phone is greyed out and not selectable with my account.
They are sending me a new phone so we'll see.

[edit] The only other thing I can think to try would be to completely remove all your current USB Drivers for Samsung from your PC and reboot the PC, then re-install the USB Drivers, and try Kies again. If it still doesn't work, try a different PC.
Well I'm going to try a different computer, and if that doesn't work, I'm going to an AT&T store. Thanks for all the help guys.

Hello all,
I only recently updated to the Galaxy S3 on AT&T and noticed that Wifi is practically useless.
It constantly loses connection. An app may download 30% or 50% of 70%, and then stop. Eventually it will connect again and then finish the download.
Maybe I can see a few webpages, and then it I get page not available notice.
I have read that an update fixed this problem, but I don't know if it is true.
Please let me know if there is a software update for this problem.
I only have a couple of days left to return the phone, and if I can't use wifi I may do so.
My phone information is below:
Model Number Samsung SGH-i747
Android Version 4.0.4
Baseband version I747UCLEM
Kernel version 3.0.8-599060-user
[email protected] #1
SMP PREEMPT Tue May 22 02:16:30 KST 2012
Build number

Thanks,

I have seen versions from July? which are I747UCLH9 and read that this update fixed wifi problems.
If this is true how do I update to this version now.
I have not rooted this phone, but have no problem doing so. However I would like to keep it unrooted as I may have to return it soon.
Of course when I check for updates from the phone it says that there are none available.

try using kies to update your phone. also try dialing *#0011#, pressing menu, selecting wifi, and turning 'wifi powersaving mode' to off
also fyi this goes in q&a report your post and categorize it as maintenance and say it's in the wrong section.

Hello! You're actually using an older firmware version. You should be on 4.1.1. Keis is pretty simple you just need to download, install, then plug your phone in and it should do the rest for you. If you've ever used an iphone or Ipod it works pretty much the same as Itunes (as far as updating your phone). The Samsung website is: http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/ About half way down the page you'll see the download links. Update to 4.1.1 and see if you're still having the issues.
Hope this helps.

As was said, upgrade the software first. Then try disabling power saving. Uncheck avoid poor connections if you have such a setting. If nothing works try checking your router's conf if you have access to it, or install WiFix if you're experiencing region-related issues. Good luck.
Thanks... Will try the upgrade tomorrow. I went to att store. They were very good at ignoring or talking about something else when I asked about updates. I would never have gotten anywhere with them.

By the way, thanks to all who replied to my question. I did get my firmware updated through KIES because of the info I would here.
When I mentioned any updates at the AT&T store I was pretty much ignored and the subject was changed. Just switched to AT&T recently and so far I have realized that the employees in their store are taught to be very polite, and it seems to get you out of the door without necessarily answering your question or fixing your problem. I guess they figure you will find it difficult to get upset with someone who is polite to you.
I have been there twice now and I hate it. It's like they are talking to you like you are an idiot.
Got a Note 3 right after they came out.
Had an issue with the first one, not the least of which was the pervasive WiFi disconnect issue many of us have been seeing; in my case also had extreme battery drop all of a sudden - like 45% in an hour - not abnormal use.. So, swapped it about 20 days ago for another one.
Seeing the same WiFi connectivity issue I saw with the first one and then all of a sudden got a pop up :
"Prevention Information"
An application has been forced to stop for an unauthorized attempt to access system in your device. It may be safe to delete an application obtained from an unauthorized route. Check Now? (with a Do not show for 30 days check box; Cancel or Ok buttons)
If you click cancel pop up comes back after about 10 mins more or less; if you click Ok you get brought to a list of what you have downloaded to weed through whatever you've installed.
Full disclosure: This device is out of the box, not rooted; stock Rom. Only none play store apps installed were Adobe Flash and Amazon App store. I use WiFi extensively for WiFi calling at my office, since there isn't a carrier on the planet can get me a decent signal. I live and die behind WiFi calling it's why I went T-Mobile to start with.
* So I proceed to scan hell out of this, using Lookout, Sophos and MalwareBytes can't find anything..
* Ok so I uninstall everything I've been experimenting with thinking maybe the mix is a problem. Doesn't solve it
* So then I do a software Backup and restore - and go to put back the one app I need the most for my Hosted Exchange connectivity to work the best for my needs adding them back one at a time to see what's causing this . Of course I turn WiFi back on to connect to my network and signing into my Google Account Google Play takes off to restore all my stuff and do all updates for anything stock on the phone. (Phone Vendors WAKE UP; Stop making the default Google Play behavior Up Date Automatically when on WiFi, let the user decide before taking off to do what you think is best) And - The pop up is back just as I get the 1 app I need on the phone. (email support for the app saying it's them - MANY APOLOGIES to Nitro Desk, it's not them.
* Very long story and many soft and hard resets, to try control the behavior, later; including running 2 miles up the road to control Google Play auto update on WiFi, but, only be on the T-Mobile network for the initial startup....
With nothing but a minimal start-up and No Apps installed other than what Google Play demanded to be able to work at all out of the box when signing in; once I got the phone back to the office and started WiFi for my network - Blammo ! the pop up is back.
This "error" or warning message is from the base Android/Samsung/T-Mobile deployment configuration for a Note 3 when starting WiFi at all.
So, I happen to be near the T-Mobile store I bought this at and go in to tell them about this and the guys there running a Note 3 say they all get the same issue.
My conclusion is that this is a miss-configuration of software and/or permissions at the core OS level when starting WiFi; likely contributing or the primary cause of WiFi connectivity issues on this device; as reported in this and other forums.
I have screenies of this condition and would love to pass this to T-Mobile and Samsung engineering, but, unlikely I can get at them to do so; hopefully they are already aware of this and working on a fix.
The other interesting thing I noticed is that when doing a hard reset: during the start of recovery mode I get an "error" then no command message under the little droid as it settles down to the menu.
Also at the end of the recovery mode process for wipe data/factory reset I get an "error" message in red as well.
Again, seems to me there's a serious flaw in their Core programming setting up proper permissions for the base WiFi stack to start without triggering a security violation.
It doesn't matter if you connect to an AP or not. Just starting WiFi the pop up will come up in 60 - 90 seconds.
This is consistently reproducible.
T-Mobile is sending me another phone; but, I believe it will behave the same way - hope not, we'll see.

You really need to SEARCH before posting. There are many threads about Prevention Information and it has nothing to do with WiFi.

That may be, but, in this case it is 100% reproducible under these conditions and happens if WiFi is turned on at all before any updates and before any additional apps are installed, other than the ones the Play store insists on bringing in to work properly once initially signing in, happens to me in this very limited and controlled startup of the device and only when starting WiFi and no other time in that controlled condition; before any updates or Play Store apps are installed.
It also happens after they are; so it seemed,to me at least, to have value because of the controlled diagnostic startup; since the condition is 100% reproducible using these steps and under these limited initial startup conditions, at least on the device I have in my hands at the moment.
A replacement should be here sometime today and will attempt to reproduce it on the replacement; T-Mobile tech support seems to think it will behave the same way as well; FWIW to anyone.
Thanks so much for the input and advice; duly noted.

Knock yourself out....
You might try doing a simple Google Search for samsung "Prevention Information" and see just how many threads there are about this issue. It is not just the Note 3 but a number of other Samsung devices as well.
Actually it has everything to do with wifi. Knox is thinking wifi is trying to collect information from your device as if it is a type of virus. Samsung is fully aware of the issue & there is an update coming based around that specific issue.

+1 Thank you slpn...
I'm glad to hear there's some fix in the works. Do you have a link handy for that? It's clear that the shipped Knox/SEAndroid configuration shipped on this device (and perhaps other Samsung models) really wasn't tuned very well before release.
OP, if you want to know more about this read some of the other threads here about Knox - the Everything Knox thread in this forum is pretty good IIRC, and the Samsung Knox whitepaper is an interesting read too (here). Basically, Samsung rolled their own solution for bring-your-own-device enterprise users, which is based in part on the SELinux extensions to Android (SEAndroid) along with some lower-level supervisory logic that's probably somewhere in the boot loader / modem / etc. [speculation] and some degree of hardware support such as the "knox warranty void" flag.
Unfortunately they developed this alongside/outside the reference implementation of SEAndroid, wrote their own APIs for interaction, etc. and don't seem to have done it terribly well. I'm tempted to ask that Samsung provide some way to actually control it, or provide a signed development FW that won't trip the hardware flag, as it really is an intrusion for non-enterprise customers. >.<

Actually I've gotten the notification without wifi although it usually happens when I do turn it on.
Totally agree though that a simple search would have saved a HELLS of a lot of trouble. Smh
Yes it's a bug but it's not really that big of an issue. I can almost guarantee it will be fixed soon with some kind of minor update.
Well I have two other issues besides the "prevention information" for some reason my note 3 keeps giving me a unstable wifi connection when the connection to the wifi is good for example on my note 2 is perfect mo issues no lags on the note 3 however I get that unstable wifi connection, and for my second issue I get a damn google+ app crash every time im on the phone or any app . This note 3 has become a nightmare with bugs . I was wondering if anyone else has the same issues besides the prevention information ???

I think I had the unstable connection problem a long time ago. I may have made my phone "forget" my wifi network and obviously have connected to it since and have not have that problem. So it's possible simply "forgetting" the network, scanning, and then connecting to it again could fix it?
How often do you use Google+? Is it possible that if you hardly use it you could just sign out of the app and then it won't search for your location so much? I see the new G+ update says something about refreshing friends location more often or something, could be tied in to that?
I dont use google+ at all. It updated on its own and it started crashing since. I just turnt off all my auto updates and I uninstalled the last google+ update lets see if that does the trick .

You can take it how you'd like cause i know how some are when they hear about an update, not saying your one of these people who flame on the other person who try to provide helpful info about an update, but that is also being included in the update i spoke of a few posts above.
What is going on is your phone is scanning your signal & even if you have a full WiFi signal, instead of just leaving you on WiFi like you'd like, it boots you off of WiFi saying internet is unstable if it considers the data connection as being a stronger signal. its a real ignorant move and overlook they made when adding this function. if on WiFi they should let you choose if you want to change connections,or better yet not even bother you to choose between the 2 cause it will interfere with what your doing at that time while you have to choose which connection you want to use. But this is involved with the update we are getting. Verizon already got an update that had to do with WiFi issues with this being one of the issues it fixed.
If you haven't been told yet though, go in to WiFi advanced settings in your WiFi connections menu, and turn off auto connect & always scanning, then dial *#0011#, click your bottom left button on the white part of the phone you'd usually use to bring up the settings menu option, choose WiFi, turn off WiFi power save mode, WiFi power save mode being tuned off cause your battery to drain about 25% faster but this is proven to work. But after a day or 2 always leave WiFi auto connect off & always scanning off, but you can then dial *#0011# & turn WiFi power save mode back on & it's almost as if those functions done together trains your phone to not boot you off WiFi anymore. This seriously works and definitely helps many i have offered the information to. Me and about 3 others figured out how to do this in a thread about 2wks after the phone was released because the wifi booting us off was killing us. People had told us to just turn off auto connect but that would just stop the pop up, but you'd still be getting booted off from WiFi but just wouldn't be told by the pop up yet you'd know because the page you'd be loading on the browser would just stop loading, or say something your using like Facebook would lose signal & tell you an error occurred. Hope this large posts helps you if you read it or anyone else who stumbles upon it.

You have to actually go into the Google+ app to see if you are signed in, unfortunately it will automatically sign you in if you are not already. So even if you accidentally open G+ or some other program or app causes it to open, you still need to actually sign out of it. Hopefully uninstalling the updates does the trick.

i had a wifi problem with my Note 2 before and now it is better with my Note 3.
Hello! every time I try to download the 4.4.2 update on my phone there just pops up a message that says that the download has been interrupted. When I connect it to Kies it tells me that my 4.3 version is up to date.
Does anybody have a I747UCUFNE4 file that is flashable through Odin? I'm not rooted, just running stock bootloader and rom.
Thanks!
'PD: I found that people had the same problem with the S4 but I don't know if the same solutions apply
I'm in the exact same boat as you. I can't quite figure out why OTA nor Kies will work. I've also got 4.3 on my phone. I was actually about to post this up because I waited several days in hopes that something would fix itself, but got nothing. I've changed the date out to July 4th (Trying every day prior), trying to get it to recognize that there is an update, and still can't get it to update. I've done everything that I can aside from resetting my phone, which I don't want to do. I even fresh installed Kies on two computers and both won't see KitKat and both won't let me "initialize and check for firmware update," saying that the SGH-i747 cannot initialize.
Prior to KitKat, it would just say my system firmware was up-to-date, not this interrupted junk. That right there tells me it is seeing it, but it won't even attempt to grab it.
My phone is also complete stock and not rooted.
I wanted to bump this. Anyone have any ideas what's going on with our phones?
Have you tried downloading the ota and manually flashing? Its in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2788012

Is it that simple? I just flash it in through odin? Sorry but this is my main phone and I read people have had a lot of problems with the 4.3 version when they use Odin.

I'm with Tony here. This is my main phone so I'm not looking to break anything, let alone completely wipe my phone with a manual install like that. Not at this time, anyway. I've thought about it, but am shying away from that for now.

If I get some free time today, I'm going to contact AT&T to see if something is whacked on my account or if I need a new SIM. I swear that my original Galaxy had this same problem and they fixed something. I'll let you know what they have to say.
Also, so long as you follow instructions to the T, it is safe. I am not one to jump on something immediately, so I like to read about people's problems for a couple days. This one seems to be going along well. I put Cyanogenmod 7 on my original Galaxy S without a hitch, and the process has since been simplified big time!
Well, I called and spoke with someone and AT&T has the ability to push updates manually if your phone isn't taking it. While she was waiting for the program to open, she was reading over the change log to see what all changed. She couldn't get her program to open, so she went to seek help. Unfortunately she came back and informed me that Kitkat isn't available yet, per a phone engineer. I let her know about many people receiving it already and pointed her to the S3 details on their website that says it's upgradeable to 4.4. I also showed her this:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/S...?faq_id=FAQ00047464&fm_seq=51509&preview=true
She is going to speak with some other folks and call me back in an hour. Fingers crossed!

Youre best bet if you are unsure about any of it would be to use enewman17's thread in General for updating. Most have had success with it and you'll probably find it has the most detailed steps for how to do it.

Alright... The rep called me back to let me know what's up! Apparently AT&T is having problems pushing the update at this time and has no ETA when they'll have their end resolved. She suggested I go to Best Buy and have them update my phone through Samsung Experience. The store closest to me has Samsung Experience, so I'll stop there after work and update you. If you happen to try it out yourself before I reply, let me know how it goes!
Now whether AT&T is blowing smoke in my face on both the update problems and Best Buy thing... I have no clue.

Well, Best Buy does indeed have the Samsung Experience dude present at two locations by me. One location said they didn't know what I was talking about and to wait for AT&T to have the update available. The other location the dude immediately knew what I was talking about and proceeded to update my phone.
They use a software called Smart to do this and it said there was an update for my phone. It took about 5-8 minutes and I was done. Unfortunately the Smart software wasn't so smart, because it just reflashed 4.3 onto my phone. I also attempted to do a manual check and it said "Software Update Interrupted." He proceeded to check again to see if the update was available and this time Smart was saying my phone was up-to-date. Hmph! The Samsung rep said he'd give me a call tomorrow and let me know why their Smart software didn't have 4.4.2 available, even though it should. He wasn't sure if it would just take another week before they got it, but he would get some clarification.
So much for that one.
I have been having the same problem. Everyone else seems to have gotten the update on their SIII's, but me. I feel left out of the KitKat club. Hah! Even my boyfriend has gotten it and we're on the same plan. I tried going through Kies, but it keeps saying that it doesn't support my phone. I even tried manually putting in the model number and S/N through Kies, but that just wants me to update it back to 4.1, which doesn't even make sense. I also tried changing the date on my phone to a future one, but that just made the wait time longer. It keeps saying my phone is up to date and it even says so on Kies. I don't understand...
I hate kies. ....lol!
There are two threads in General which will help you to update manually.

It was the only suggestion I was given on the AT&T community forums, I thought to at least try it. More of a headache than anything else. Hah!
The only problem is that I don't want to root my phone, like I have done with some of my old phones in the past, since this one is still under contract.
Try this thread then.

Well, I stopped at Best Buy again today to see if they had 4.4.2 available and sure enough, they do. He told me the update came in yesterday. I had him update my phone and I'm happy to say I have KitKat on my SGH-I747.
Everything seems MUCH smoother. Bluetooth actually works and connects on its own (instantly, too), WiFi actually seems to be working instead of saying my connection is unstable, and the phone is overall swifter at tasks like it was prior to 4.3. There is also no annoying lock screen delay like 4.3 introduced for me. So overall, I'm VERY happy with 4.4.2. :good:

Hi,
I am now living outside US and I have an UNLOCKED S3 i747 and I wanted to update my 4.3 to Kitkat 4.4. Unfortunately, AT&T dont push 4.4 update if you dont have an active AT&T account. Is there a quick and safe way to update without going through AT&T servers?
