I just was wondering. I am trying to update my prl and it keeps failing. Now do I really need it? And if so how do I go about doing it manually if I can

Current PRL has been rolled back to 60676. Error is Sprint originated. If in settings, phone info, status that is your prl then you are fine.

Like most others you will wake up one morning and it will be on 76, there is a way to do it manually but you need to get your msl. Google update prl manually if you are concerned about. It won't make that much difference unless you travel alot, roam a lot, or you are in one of the areas that had a roaming tower switch.
Rethinking this prl error thing. I Odin'd back to DI18 and tried the PRL update and still no go. Let the OTA update to EC05, no go. Called Sprint and he (of course) had me go through a few different resets and still no go, even got me locked in an activation loop. So somewhere along the way my update ability was broken. Was it something in DK28? Since it broke GPS's and some USB connections. Not sure but luckily with insurance I will be getting a new phone next week to see what works. My g/f's phone has gone mostly the same path as mine but prl updates fine. All phones are not created equal.
It's Sprint's problem. I wish they just would know and admit that. We're stuck at 60676 for now anyway. Manual updates are the way to go if you must. I think folks have been using QPST.
Sprint has basically acknowledged the issue on their support forum. I tried to post the URL but this site wouldn't let me.
Of course, acknowledgement and fixing it are 2 very different things. I don't think they know the root cause particularly at the technician level. They just send you through some resets and then offer to swap your phone.
I wonder if this will be fixed in the next OTA update?

Hmm...maybe. But why do the new phones work, unless it is something in the first batch of Epics that went out, if so then why does the 2nd phone on my account update fine? If both phones purchased at the same time were not updating then I wouldn't question it, but the fact that 1 does and 1 don't bothers me and makes me feel like something in the rooting process or ROM flashing knocked it out. I have seen the posts on Sprint, but I think it is due to the amount of reports that they have gotten and have no idea what is wrong. Once they get my phone back, they will have another one to work with.

My phone updated fine when I got it in mid Jan 2011. I started getting update errors about a week BEFORE the 2.2 OTA update. I have never rooted and am completely stock. My guess is there is a software glitch on some phones or the servers that is preventing the handshake between the phone and the servers for updating. It could be that Sprint has unknowingly programed their servers for some ESN's not to update. I just hope they find the root cause and fix it.

Maybe...certain ESNs? Trying to lock out first Gen Epics? Every theory I come up with gets blown. I imagine both phones on my account are the same gen purchased a week after they came out. I guess I have to let it go and be happy with a new phone next week.

No its ends in 9

anyone notice a difference between the newest one and 60668? wondering if it's worth it to flash a stock rom just to grab the latest prl
PRL change
i thought it was 668, but i started flashing a few roms and creating some nandroids and noticed it was 669? when did it change?
I just checked mine after a post in General...I am still on 8. I have had my update off all day...it is one way for me to keep Google Talk from starting up. So I haven't seen it.
From the other thread people started noticing today? I am rooted stock..will see if it shows up.
I have rooted 2.2 with prl of 60662
60669
well, i guess 60669 it is. ive flashed 5 roms just now to create backups so i can pick one that works best for me, and yup, im on 9 now. hope it for the better?
So let me get this straight...no one is noticing when the update happens? It just happens? Like somehow they are pushing to us without consent? Ok that just kinda a little pisses me off...
...well unless that is not what is happening.
not a clue

nope, i didnt have any notice at all. i checked it when i was coming home from work and it was 8, then i checked about an hour ago, and it is now 9.
Mine hasn't changed, till I manually went into system updates and clicked on update. I am running the Rooted Froyo 3.23.651.6 ROM.
Does this break the forced roaming setting people have?
Ok, mine had not updated at all...(rooted stock 1.47)...so I went to see if there was an update from my phone.
Lesson learned...it doesn't tell you about an update...it just does it.
So...question for everyone that has that forced roaming set up...does this break it? Anyone test it? I was going to ask that question before applying the update but didn't realize phone would do it automatically.
My PRL is 60668. When I click update PRL or update Profile, it says "Checking for PRL/Profile update", then says "PRL/Profile could not be updated. Please try again later. If the problem persists, you may need to contact Customer Service. Error code:1012". This happened to me a couple of ROMs ago, any suggestions as to what this is about?

Through research all I can see is the hard reset route, and CDMA workshop. It just seems like no one cares honestly
I've done at least 5 hard resets today and nothing. It just keeps saying "searching for network" I really didn't want to waste my entire day doing this. ugh. I know it must be somewhere in the settings, but Sprint peeps don't seem to have a clue either.

No it's not somewhere in the settings, that's the problem. You went to settings, system upgrade, then update prl and got the same error as me right?
If you have another phone, go online and switch over to it, then switch back, and it will be fixed. That or sprint themselves have some other option. The only way to fix it yourself is pretty complicated
We did all of that. The Sprint rep switched phones and everything and still nothing. It's just not finding the network. LAME!!!

Oh wow that sucks IDK, I'd call em back and complain, demand free service
UPDATE!!!! I thought wth I'll give Sprint another call and see if I can get a different advanced tech that might have some more ideas and get me back up and running. Well after about 2 minutes she asks for my ESN number to validate and well......IT WAS INCORRECT! She updated it to the correct one and voile it works now! My suggestion is to call them and verify that they have the correct ESN. Good luck.
There have been issues with CDMA activation/provisioning all day today. This would include data profile issues and possible PRL updates as well. Try again this weekend.

I will, thanks for the update, and glad your problem was fixed. This seems like a possible problem, considering all of the trouble I had switching the lines over, along with selling my old phone, activating old phone, then dummy phone, then evo, then switched evo.. I'll look into it.

Ha bro this issue has been happening for a long time, check the dates
I'm having this same problem. Just did my first root and installed Fresh Evo 3.1.0.1, with the recommended newest radio/wimax. Everything but the phone works great. I can still dial and receive calls at my normal number, showing good reception, but there is tons of hiss and my voice almost never makes it to the other phone.
Tried to Update Profile and Update PRL, and both gave me Error 1012. Sprint's website is down right now (4 AM Sunday morning), so maybe the network is simply not currently serving updates.
However, if it's something that can be fixed, I'd be grateful if anyone has an idea.
I could be wrong but if i recall error 1012 is a Sprint data/vision username/password error and is correctable with a call to tier 2 tech support.
I cant remember for certain tho, But I believe thats what that is, I know i've seen it quite a few times before.
Im now having this issue. What has been the cause for most of you? If you found out.

Literally every time i check for software updates i get
"Communication failed"
The server is currently unavailable.
Your device will automatically check for an update within the next 48 hours.
Then if i check again it says device is up to date, you can check for updates again in XXhours. If i go into application manager -> AT&T Software Update and clear data, i can check for updates again but i get the same communication failed. I also tried clearing data and rebooting phone, and it still wont check.
And i can't get Samsung Kies running on my windows 7 pc for some reason, so i can't get updates from there either.
Is anyone else on AT&T experiencing these problems? Any fix for this? I really want that update that adds brightness control to the notification menu.

I did not update, but hearing that update would disable local search, add new modem. Nothing about Brightness control
There is no brightness control on ATT update. I was having the same problem you were and exchanged the phone. There is no fix as far as I know for the error you are getting. It is a common issue. Search the annoyances (bugs) thread.
I don't know if the OTA update resolves your issue because they day after I exchanged mine the update came out.

I also haven't been able to get the OTA update. I assumed it was because I rooted and the device is listed as 'modified'. Is the update worth it?
It is in my opinion, and my usage habbits, for the WiFi stability increase that is gained.
Universal search is stripped (searches conducted on phone do not include on device results, ie contacts).
In other words, if you use the Google search by long pressing your menu button the results from your search will only be pulled from the internet.
I rarely use the search built in, so it hardly mattered to me.
Check out the developer forum for ways around the universal strip if you are rooted and want to update.

Well i reseated the SIM card, and removed the little blue tape from the sd slot and the SIM slot, rebooted and still not working.
I wanted to avoid rooting, since the stock software runs so smoothly and i liked being on the latest at&t software. I guess since i can't get OTA updates now theres no reason not to root.
Will this issue be fixed eventually? Or would i be better off exchanging phones while i can?
I'd exchange it. If you have faulty hardware then rooting won't do anything for you.
Peace of mind, if anything, that if you decide to root your phone is functioning as it should from the start.
Others will argue it's software issues.
But, whatever the cause, none of us paid to have a 90% functioning phone from the factory. Go get what you paid for is my take on it.
Good luck.

Well speaking as a software engineer, i'm almost certain its a software issue, most likely with at&t's software update app, or on their servers. Mabey reinstalling the at&t software update application will help?
It sounds reasonable to me. Maybe try the method for No trip flash counter in devoplment? You would be upgrading to the newest firmware and have root and not trip the flash counter. You would still be able to check for ota updates (although should just return the status of your software is up to date since it is a totally stock ROM just with root injected). I imagine that would reinstall the software update service. Although with your knowledge you are way over my head. And whether or not when updating ROMs if that application is reinstalled is something I can't answer.
Maybe just try this first:
Settings> Application Manager> All> AT&T Software Update> Clear Data> Confirm
Power off Phone
Remove battery for at least thirty seconds.
Reinstall battery and power on device.
Try again after device boots up.

I've been having this same problem
I was thinking that its because of AT&T's controlled release of the OTA.
Its been so long since the release, that I can't imagine that's still true. I also agree that its probably a software thing. I have a number of the bloat apps disabled and also wonder if one or more of those would interfere with such a thing.
I'd love to hear about a resolution.

That's an interesting theory, I've disabled some boatware too. Have you tried enabling them? I'm going to try that now.

So, if it's a software issue why is it two identical devices running the same software from the factory yield different results? I.e. my first device would do exactly as your original post outlines, then my replacement device had no issue checking for updates (same stock software, same device form factor).
If you search there are a lot of examples of complaints of this exact issue.
I am also very interested in this because even though there are many complaints out there, the only answers seem to be;
1) who cares this is xda and we update through Odin/cwm etc...
2) replace it.
Good luck, I hope you guys find an answer.

I haven't tried enabling everything. I've tried enabling 'Samsung Push' which seemed like the likely starting point. I've been trying to do some debug on some battery drain things, so I've been hesitant to change too much at once. Also, I can basically only check every 24 hours so its slow going.
As far as the hardware issue, it just doesn't make too much sense that a hardware issue would be causing a problem because the software update would presumably be using the same hardware as the rest of the working smartphone functions. I think the explanation to one device updating and one not is more likely a server device id filtering or a user changing more than 'just the new hardware'.
Its neither here nor there though. Everyone will have there hair brained theories. Why don't we start asking what features will be on the next iphone. Seriously though, apple has to add a removable battery right? (I'm just kidding, please don't spam a million responses about how that will or will not ever happen.)

You can bypass the wait time between checks by going into application managment -> at&t software update and clearing data. Then you can try to update again.

I've had similar issues checking for updates. i gave up and pulled the first update with the USALG1 rom posted in the development forum sticky. I too have several apps disabled (actually moved out of the system/app dir) and was wondering if that possibly caused issues. I never did try updating through kies though.
My kies wont even run on my windows 7 64 bit. There seems to be alot of people having problems with kies on win7 64 bit, nothing from samsung either. So theres really no way for me to get updates
This is How I Got My Phone to Update
I should add that this was my 2nd galaxy s3 to not update. I did a factory reset hoping it would fix the issue. It didn't. I called att customer care for help b/c I was thinking maybe they just set up my account incorrectly when I first got the phone. Nothing else really makes sense. They said they couldn't help and take it to the store. I took it to an att store, and they said they don't actually do any software troubleshooting, so they just exchanged it for a new one. I tried doing the update there, it failed, so I took it home, and I force closed all the update apps, cleared all their data, and it worked as soon as I hit update. If force closing and clearing the data from the att and samsung update apps doesn't help, There may be nothing else you can do except take it in to an att shop.

When you got it to work, exactly what apps did you force close and clear data? Just AT&T software update? Any others?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I force closed the At&T Software Update app and I think the Samsung Push Service. It is really the AT&T software update app that finally started downloading immediately after trying it again.
So I finally attempted the Keis connection and it worked immediately. I don't know what other problems people are having, but when I installed it on my Win7 x64 machine I had the S3 connected. After I ran the software for the first time it mentioned an update and proceeded to update it. Keep fighting the good fight jefferson9.
Hey guys, I'm new here, so this thread is probably on here somewhere, but oh well. I can't update my S3 OTA or through Kies. I know there is an update, as my friend got it fine on his yesterday (it's the one with the brightness slider in notification center). On OTA, it says communication failed every single time, then says up to date. I have tried clearing data and all that as well. And in Kies, it also says I have the latest firmware, even though I know I don't. Any ideas? I really don't want this happening when Jelly Bean comes out. Oh yeah, I'm not rooted or anything by the way, I'm still on stock for now.
I have the same exact issue. I think it has something to do with ATT and the phone not being set up right in their system. Did you by chance have an iPhone before your S3 and use the same Sim card?
Mine wouldn't find the ota on the phone. I searched around here and found a thread someone had started that has instructions on how to download the flashable zip and install it via CWM. Worked like a champ. If you are rooted this is the way you'll want to go

I've always recommended returning whatever device you have back to 100% stock (as it was out of the box) before taking any official updates. I've heard ppl say they can take them just fine while still rooted - but they lose root. Sometimes you can simply re-root, sometimes you have to wait for a new exploit to be discovered before you can root again. In light of this, I always wait a week (sometimes less) after a new OTA (Over The Air) update is released, just to be sure I can regain root immediately. Welcome to the wonderful world of Android OS!!!
[edit] to answer your post about not being able to take the last OTA update. Have you tried a factory reset? Through Android Recovery? You will lose personal settings and contacts if you dont back them up. But, it may solve your update issue. Another thing I know, that a lot of ppl do is - as soon as you buy a new device, such as the awesome Galaxy S III, is to immediately do the factory reset. (Who knows how many employees have goofed around with the new toys they just got in stock)
I had the same problem with not being able to get the OTA update on my S3. Turns out it was a bad sim. As soon as I got a new sim from AT&T everything worked fine. Wish I would have done that first cause I spent hours on the phone with AT&T and Samsung trying to fix the problem. Good luck. Hope that works for you.

Same issue here. Just spent a couple hours this Saturday at an AT&T store - end result is that they are swapping it out under the manufacture 1 year warranty.
Sim replacement did not fix it for me.
Tech support over the the stores land line says that the option to push OTA to phone is greyed out and not selectable with my account.
They are sending me a new phone so we'll see.

Ugh! So where do I begin.. First of all I am running the MOAR most updated version in the OP. Have been for a while. Haven't been able to update PRL/Profile in I don't how long. So I like to here and there to make sure all is well. Anyway today I started messing with it and I used some secret code I found in the MOAR thread for hands free activation. Well, that went south since I am unable to update PRL/Profile. Then I called Sprint and she got the hands free activation off. I was still unable to update PRL/Profile after that. I went ahead and downloaded the latest MOAR and wiped EVERYTHING!! Then flashed the MOAR. I am not sure exactly when the 4G/3G problems started to happen. I am thinking before I flashed the ROM again. But anyway in a nutshell I I can not still update PRL/Profile. Gives me internal error and now I have no 4G/3G. Sprint wanted me to call them on another phone and I assume to deactivate my phone and reactivate it or something idk. I remember one time my sister had this issue and I was in the phone 5 minutes and it was back. IDK why I am having such a issue.
I had the same issue on my first flasb. Forcing hands-free activation fixed it

Right. That did fix it although after I still was unable to update PRL/Profile. But right now I am having an issue with no 3G/4G. Sprint said it could be a hardware issue with my antenna which I find hard to believe. I am downloading another ROM now and see if that works any better. Not sure what else to do. I don't have 50$ and I am not trying to pay for it. I find it hard to believe that my antenna is just not working. Although I was on the phone with her for 50 minutes and it seemed like we tried everything I just don't want to give up.
Odin back to full stock... Usually clears up lots of issues. You can reroot and flash moar again.

Is odin back to stock difficult? I would think it would be easy since to root is fairly simple. I am going to keep downloading this ROM. Then go back to stock and see if that works.
EDIT: So on my second call to Sprint today this guy said I need Sprint Zone and I need to activate my phone. Having our phones rooted I did not have this app. Thankfully I seen it posted so I put it in my DB and installed it and it installed but the app was no where to be found. I even flashed the app pack and installed it same issue. Then I called Sprint two more times just to come to the conclusion that my phone antenna could be defected. Which would cost me 50$. Anyway, I thought it was something else I could do. Sitting here downloading a ROM on my phone and on my laptop going to thread to thread. Hangout convo to hangout convo I see the status of the download. Well what do you know Sprint Zone is updating. So I updated it and it opened. Said my phone was not activated. So I activated it, phone restarted and I have 4G LTE and I went to the browser and it works. Finally caught a break. Thanks guys!! @edfunkycold @CNexus
