Alright! So I've been thinking about this for a while.
The defy is progressing fast in development despite having a locked bootloader (thanks to our amazing devs ), but as most of you already know, we have to do with three different devices. We have the green lens defy (soc), the red lens defy (bayer) and the defy+ (bayer too). Red lens users are the lucky guys since they can use both froyo and gingerbread kernels, but green lens users only have working camera on the froyo kernel (except for greenbreadmod). Defy+ users with bl7 cannot downgrade to froyo kernel either.
We could all downgrade to froyo kernel if it hadn't been for bl7 with the bl6 froyo sbf, but the gingerbread kernel is better on many areas for red lens users with deepsleep, stock gingerbread, some say better performance and battery life, etc.
My suggestion is to split development into defy development (froyo kernel) and defy+ development (gingerbread kernel) (I'm talking about completely seperate sub-forums, e.g. Defy General, Defy+ android development, Defy android development, etc). That's what they've done in many other forums, e.g. Galaxy S II with the I9100G and the original I9100, although we're here talking about completely different hardware (different processors).
Most of us are already used to this, and really don't really mind having two different development branches in the same sub-forum, but it would be a lot easier to e.g. tracking bugs and new releases for CM9, as different kernel builds have different bugs, and people are often not that good at telling what build they're on when they come with their problems. Defy+ users would no longer get bricked (at least it would be more rare), as there would be a separate defy+ area, and green lense users would not get stuck on bl7 that often if we could warn them properly. People would no longer ask about kernels, as it is obvious that its a gingerbread/froyo kernel ROM according to the development sub-forum.
Not everyone may be very happy about this and it would require a lot of work moving and splitting threads. Some of the development is independent of kernels, and there would perhaps be no good place to put them. It may even cause more confusion for all i know.
Feel free to share your thoughts, but also remember to vote the POLL
Cheers.
PS! I'm ready for rotten tomatoes...
if we had unlocked BL there would be far less need for separate development as we could all run the same kernel. we should instead concentrate our efforts on having the supposedly non-evil Z GOOGLE who is now the company who makes moto branded phones quit being so EVIL and unlock us already
That's what i am saying. Seperated threads. One for green lens froyo and one for ginger red lense.

Different thread is okay for me...not different development section
I agree but...
I agree there needs to be more division but what for roms like ms2ginger where it is orientated to the red lensed camera but allows for green lensed defy with greenbreadmod. Then you are asking a developer to maintain two seperate threads in different sections of the forum.
Exactly! Good point! Keep coming with arguments from either side and I'll make a list in the OP

I agree coz im planning buy defy or defy + but im confused on which to choose.

Personally I'd say KEEP AWAY from Moto's locked bootloaders! Don't buy any Motorola product until they unlock ALL their devices!
My defy+ is my last Motorola purchase EVER.
but if you still can't help yourself from buying one, I'd recommend a RED LENS defy or a defy+ (first choice would be the red lens because it doesn't require battery fix on any custom ROM and it's shipped with a lower bootloader version which lets you flash more kernels). Green lens users are stuck with froyo (as stated in the OP).
Now let's go on topic again
Sent from my MB526 using Tapatalk 2
okay, so lets get this clear:
mb525 defy green lens (soc): 800mhz cpu, 1540mah battery, green lens - only works on froyo kernel
mb525 defy red lens (bayer): 800mhz cpu, 1540mah battery, red lens - works on both kernels (froyo and gb)
mb526 defy+ (bayer): 1ghz cpu, 1700mah battery, red lens - works only on gb kernel (bl7)
to avoid confusion, these all have the SAME cpu (ti omap 3630), just with different frequencies, but you can easily overclock them (ive been using my defy on 1ghz for a year now). that means that the only difference in hardware is the battery, and there are tons of aftermarket batteries (im using a 2300mah one).
i love my phone, but i too say to keep away from motorola, as we defy users have all been betrayed by them, left alone. not just that we dont get upgrades, but we cant even flash cooked roms because of the locked bootloader, which will probably never be unlocked. were stuck on gb kernel (froyo for soc), and will never be able to run ics properly, as without a custom kernel, the hwa can never be fully implemented.
as for the topic: i dont think we need separate subforums, just separate threads, each clearly stating for which version it is intended. this will avoid confusion, but still will be accessible in the same place (which is good for bayer defy users - like me - who can basically use whichever rom they want). i will vote as soon as i get to my pc
sent from my cm9 defy...
Oh please do it, I'm getting crazy to understand which post to follo w for rooting or install roms. It's so confusing to have them merged together
Different Threadsss
+1
I think one froyo kernel aka green lense users and other for red lense/Defy+ GB kernel so really there should be one more thread made since Epsylon3 has one for froyo....
Edit - Don't read you post fully
Yh this is the best idea but it will be hard and a lot of work for Step666 our forum moderator to move and split everything up also the devs don't have time to be posting in two sections i think
I totally agree. The development forums are a mess now!
Besides the efforts done by some users trying to make default threads, You don't know where to get the latest rom, the latest kernel, or where to report a bug!
EDIT: the splitting should be Defy Greens Lens in one side and Defy Red Lens/Defy+ on the other

Hey guys i'm planning to buy motorola defy in next month. As i've to stick to this phone for 3 years i want to ask you some questions or clear my doubt. 1. Will this phone get android 2.2? 2. If I flashed with custom rom of 2.2 will adobe flash 10.1 work on it? 3. Is flashing this phone difficult or easy? 4. What about its sound quality? Is it better than galaxy 3 or nokia 5800xm? 5. Will HD games work on this device?
1,2,5: yes
3: easy
4: don't know, didn't have those phones to test the Defy against
There are a few 2.2 leaked ROMs, I'm using one myself and flash is running smoothly. The official update will be released in the second half of this month
Sound quality is good. The Defy is in every respect technically a high-end phone, comparable to Galaxy s i9000, HTC Desire HD.
Galaxy 3 is rather medium-class.
The only negative points IMO are that the screen is very reflective in sunlight and the camera could be better.
And battery performance is VERY unpredictable!!
You mean battery life not good?
Battery life is good comparing to other android phones. It is 2~3 days for normal use.
yes, the screen is a bit reflective, but if you set it bright enough, it's very nice! and battery performance is quite good, i get about 2 days with some gaming and 3G/wifi constantly on! the only thing i'm missing from this phone is full multitouch, as it has only two point mt, which can be disturbing in some games (like tap tap revenge). otherwise it's a very good phone, with great overclock/undervolt potential!

questions regarding DEFY
I heard that defy bootloader is locked hence custom rom is not possible for defy then how come custom roms are available in dev thread?
They're not true custom ROMs, they're just standard ones with some of the stock apps removed and others pre-loaded.
The bootloader is locked and that's why, for example, CyanogenMod isn't available for the Defy or Gingerbread.
Thank's Guys!
I'll buy a defy tomorrow, and this answers helped me to make my choice (principally
the battery time).
you wont go far wrong with this phone. performance/price wise, i think this is one of the best in the market right now

there is someone with cynogenmod 7 for defy in dev thread, how could it be possible then...really confused about defys potential & ability for custom roms..
One question: what is the last oficial android version? Here in brazil, the last available is 2.1...
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
2.2 is already out, ans cm7 using 2.3 will probably get a final stable release version soon
I'm curently running CM7(beta 3) and it's doing pretty well.
Though there are still some things to be fixed, it is definitely an increase of performance and battery life, and will be worth of updating once it is fully stable.

Most of'em are, as abovesaid, pretty much customized standart ROMs.
However, 2nd Init "hack" was recently intoruced, which kinda bypasses locked bootloader. Hence CM7 goodness.
At least you don't have to worry a single bit using DEFy in the rain
Hello all.
My free defy turns up tomorrow.
Hope cm7 is at the same level as it is with the SGS.
I'm sure you will all be seeing me lurking around the forums.

@iammodo I don't know at which level in CM7 for SGS, but for Defy it's pretty close to perfection (except few minor bugs). You can start by reading the development or the faq thread.
yeah..CM7 final is on the way, just wait for few bugs fixed.
From what i hear, cm7 on defy is better than on many other devices, including some officially supported ones.
Might give stock a chance.

Yes, 2.3.4 leaked is awesome!
Despite the ultra-bright softkeys ( and data disabled icon which is fixed in the status bar ), it's worth giving a try .
I've done some mess and i had to downgrade to froyo, and so i couldn't avoid installing CM7 RC1 which is really great.
And, of course, I suggest anyone installing CM7 ( on Defy )!
Luckly I have my SGS and Xoom to use while getting my defy how I like it.
Seems lots of fun flashing.
Hopes its a simple as Xoom or SGS.

Something to check also is the camera module in your defy: BAYER (red one, the newer) or SOC (green one, older). I just received my defy 2 days ago, but unfortunately got the old SOC green camera. :-( From what I gathered here, it means that leaked 2.3 roms are a no-no (camera will not function), and 720p mods will not work either. Not sure the SOC camera is intrinsically worse than the BAYER one, but it is not as well supported (not part of the new leaked rom, probably because defy "replacement" always use a BAYER).
Mines red.
But haven't checked the logcat to double check yet.

AFAIK, It is not possible until the bootloader is unlocked (I wonder why they want to complicate things for themselves ). Again, from what I have seen here (after a long gap of inactivity ) greenbreadmod is not fully compatible with CM7 (if that's what you are talking about, and I don't know about nightlies. The RC1, which my friend has doesn't seem to have it). So, even if defy+ roms are ported somehow, onto defy, those with green-lens have to wait till someone gets the mod up and running on CM7... or Motorola themselves upgrade defy to gingerbread (which is possibly not happening, cuz defy+'s sole marketing vantage point lies on 'gingerbread').
Hope I have answered your question...

Not really. I think the average everyday Joe would see 1GHZ over 800MHZ as the selling point. GB would be secondary if at all. People I talk to are more concerned about speed than what OS it's running. IMO

The leaked roms are the proof: they support only Bayer...so it is highly probable that defy+ will use only bayer. The fact that all the new defy comes with SOC is maybe because moto is clearing its stock of soc modules (and 1500 mAh batteries). When it is done, no more defy will be produced...or, instead, only defy with bayer will be produced, but flashed with new gingerbread rom and sold as defy+ (which is imho the defy with a bayer cam, a new supplier for oem battery, and the use of a different colored plastic in the same injection molding lines for the frame. I am 90% sure bayer defy using a mugen equivalent battery IS the defy+. You'll know if I was right in Septembre, when first defy+ get dissassembled side by side with a defy ;-) )
I wonder if the new battery will fit the original defy.

I shouldnt buy it... These are my reasons:
Motorola updates (I think we will not see official ICS in DEFY+)
Locked Bootloader = No "perfect" or "easy" ICS CyanogenMod 9
Motorola lied about it ( Its a defy with "stock" clock processor values.. )
It only can use signed kernels (by motorola --> bootloader locked)
About your questions... No.. overclocked kernel doesnt exists... Only motorola's kernel overclocked from bootmenu or setvsel. Kernel is .32 i think...
In my opinion... You should look for a samsung or Htc phone...
dissapointing...
There is a petition for unlocking the moto bootloaders.
Sign it and spread the word.
Still, if nothing happens, maybe get a sony xperia active. It has ip67 and hd recording and i think its a good alternative if you look for a strong smartphone
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Luckily the CyanogenMod developers are very strong so we will get ICS unofficially. But if you don't need the IP67 certified case I would buy a Nexus phone (the Nexus S isn't that expensive any more) or a Sony (Ericsson). The XPeria Neo or Ray are at the same price level than the Defy but will get ICS in the next months. And because Sony (Ericsson) supports CyanogenMod all devices got CyanogenMod 7.
I would get something with 4" screen and unlocked bootloader. Other then that its just not worthed....
LG 2x come to my mind right now... or something similar.. for a long term...

Mind you, it is still an excellent phone. Can be overclocked to 1.3GHz even without an unlocked bootloader and custom kernels. Also it is a very safe phone to play around with, physically cos of its relative ruggedness, and software wise because the locked bootloader means chances of bricking by doing something related to custom ROMs are nil.

Defy+ is great!
I'm also really satisfied with my Defy+. Rooted, MS2Ginger 2.1 with all patches (except the ones which have something to do with Blur), V6 Supercharger, now it is quite fast, good for playing around (testing different ROMs, nearly unbrickable) and really sturdy (even more with Otter Box Commuter Case). The size is also perfect.
May not be state-of-the-art hardware but has the potential to be a good phone even alongside the next generations of smartphones.
Hi all!
I've started this thread to share experience about the custom ROMs made exclusively for the Defy+, because I haven't seen such a collection topic here before. There's no Defy+ section here yet, and it's sometimes hard to find out if a Defy ROM works on MB526 also. So let's start off with the ROMs I've tried so far:
1. MIUI Pikachu Edition - this ROM has bricked my phone with bootloader error, but I've been able to bring it back to life by flashing this SBF with RSD Lite, which proved as a good base for Defy+ custom ROMs.
2. Epsylon's CM7.2, which had to be modded with camera and battery fix. It has some annoying bugs, and the latest version here is still from 27th January. Better avoid using it.
3. CM7 WhiteRabbit Edition 1.3 - it's just upgraded to 1.4, but the 1.3 I tried was based on the same 27th January build, so same annoying bugs. Looking good and fast as lightning on the other hand. UPDATE: I've asked TweetyPeety in the forum to use the latest Quarx2k CM builds instead of Epsylon's, and he said he would look into it.
4. CM9 by Quarx, build from 18th March. Awesome look, but the GUI is very slow, I suppose the hardware acceleration is not fully implemented yet. The overall operating of this ROM is quite fast though, the Gallery is exceptionally fast, if I overlook the graphical lags. Surprising, but I haven't experienced any stability problems, no FCs, no reboots, everything worked, this one looks super-stable. Only a few features are missing. Keep up the good work, Quarx.
5. CM7.2 by Quarx, build 20120323. I'm using it now, no problems so far. The GUI is a bit less fluid compared to WhiteRabbit. UPDATE: New 20120328 build has arrived!
6. NEW! EuroSkank KANGs for Defy+. No bugs encountered so far, the GUI is a little bit smoother than on Quarx2k's build, but maybe it's just a placebo effect.
7. Nothing But Speed! I'm using it right now, and it's extraordinary. New ROM based on MS2Ginger, tweaked by me, check it out here!
Note: I had to disable CPU management in the 2ndInit bootmenu for Quarx ROMs, otherwise it displays 0MHz as maximum frequency in CM performance settings, cannot be changed, and the CPU does not reach 1GHz.
WARNING! This thread is not for beginners. If you are not familiar with flashing SBF files, installing 2ndInit, installing zipped updates from recovery, doing nandroid backups etc, read this beginner's guide first!
great thread! finally something 526-specific
I've just tryed the Epsilon cm72, I experienced the same as you

The Defy+ is just a Defy with the Bayer (red lens) camera (which some Defys have anyway), a larger capacity battery and overclocked to 1GHz (which you can easily do on a rooted Defy). It's exactly the same hardware platform as the red lens Defy and the same ROMs will work on it as on the red lens Defy. There really isn't much point in having separate Defy and Defy+ threads IMO, it would just clutter up the forums and cause confusion.

He is right, you know. DEFY+ is an overclocked bayer camera DEFY with a larger battery.
*Camera and battery fixes are needed on Epsylon's builds, because he has a SOC DEFY. Quarx's has had a DEFY+ for a short while now, but his builds are already completely adjusted to it (both camera and battery are working completely correctly)
Everybody with an MB526! I've started an all-in-one guide thread for it, since the confusion is obviously very present... Please, ask questions that you have and things you think should be in the guide in private messages! So we don't mess up the thread too quickly.
It's here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566861
@Goose-T Mate, please don't be offended by this!

Brilliant thread. The defy plus is replacing the defy everywhere and there should be more dedicated threads like this.
After reading the thread I tried out Quarx's CM7.2 build 20120323 but the battery had a question mark on it and I could not find a solution.
Did anyone else have this issue??

The kernel of your phone may not be fully compatible with CyanogenMod. What is your phone's build and kernel version? You can find it in Settings/About phone.

Unfortunately most of the custom ROMs for Defy are made to be compatible with Froyo kernel, which cannot be flashed to Defy+, as far as I know. That's the biggest separation line in my opinion.

Froyo can be flashed on DEFY+ and it's as simple as flashing 2.3.6 that you like to tell people to do so much
Guys, don't rush into things. Read, then read more, then ask about what you are unsure about, then read more, then triple check, and then maybe you're set to try modding. DEFY and DEFY+ are almost impossible to brick completely, but that doesn't make the experience of your phone being stuck at Motorola logo easier at all. Trust me

OK, I just don't want to share experience I don't have. Instead of that I tell here what's working for me.

Strange, this build should be OK for CM7.2. However I've heard somewhere that Motorola is now shipping Defy+ with a new battery, and its capacity is now only 1650mAh instead of 1700mAh. My phone has the 1700mAh battery. Check this video out, at 1:55 there's both 1650mAh and 1700mAh marking on the battery. Can you check your battery's specs? It must be on the back side of it.
1700/1650 mAh

Yes. My battery is exactly that one. Both 1650 and 1700 on the battery. Damn. I hope I can find a solution. The question mark on the battery still remains. Though when connected to a charger the green LED glows. But the "?" on the battery icon remains.
Hi Goose-T,
what can be seen on the battery in that video, and also on the HF5X in my DEFY+ is the minimum and typical milli-amp hour ratings of the battery.
It's listed as 1650 mAh min, 1700 mAh typ.
So, it's a 1700 mAh battery. Motorola (or the chinese manufacturer of the battery) is just being precise about the absolute worst performance you'll get from it, is telling you what you should expect to get from it, and ofcourse higher capacities are not defined but I supposed could be possible, should you be so lucky.

next WhiteRabbit PLUS will be based on the latest QUARX, didn't know his source and Jordan is out of date.

Yes, I checked my battery yesterday, and saw the same marking on mine. Now I'm completely clueless. Anyway, the attached battd file may help, this worked for me on Epsylon's build. It should be copied into the CM updater ZIP file before flashing with Total Commander to the \system\bin folder overwriting the old battd file.
