I'm planning on ordering from Expansys and getting at least the MHL adapter (would the Expansys one work as well as the official Samsung one?), a car kit, and maybe this sleek looking case once it's in stock.
I would get the HTC MHL adapter. It looks much better and the ports are arranged more logically.

I'll be getting (when in stock) an extra battery
http://shop.htcpedia.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-battery.html
and another charger for it
http://shop.htcpedia.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-battery-charger.html
I have a soft pouch for when im out. I bought a usb connector so I can plug in a usb adapter for a mouse and keyboard or plug in a flash drive. I also bought a 7000mAh battery pack to charge it on the go. I did ponder on whether to buy a spare battery but that means turning the phone off, taking the battery out and changing it so a battery pack which can recharge a nearly empty battery at least 3 times makes more sense. It also has 2 outputs so you can charge 2 phones at once or power any usb device from it .
Im waiting until the samsung car dock and portrait multimedia dock are released. I was going to get an mhl adapter but I need a desk dock anyway and the docks for the nexus will have hdmi ports in them so you can output direct to a tv or monitor without the need for ugly connectors.
Mark.

Wow, didn't know they Nexus could act as a USB host. Does that mean you can read any file off a flash drive? What about portable hard drives (I'm assuming they would need external power)?
That battery pack looks nice, too bad they don't have it on expansys. It will cost me too much to ship each item from individual websites along with my Nexus
Edit: Just found the Usb host on the go thread and it seems that it is not supported out of the box (yet), you might need to flash a custom kernel for it to work until Google fixes it. That said I still ordered the cable

I just picked up a MilitaryShield screen protector and carbon fiber skin from amazon. I thought for $15 I couldn't go wrong.
telepathically sent with my Galaxy Nexus which is being imprisoned by FedEx
i still think what will be the best dock, this one:
http://shop.htcpedia.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-multimedia-dock.html
or this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Desktop-Dock-Galaxy-Nexus/dp/B006GJ5S3S
the 1st one has both HDMI & mini-USB.
the 2nd one is the official and uses the pogo pins but only mini-USB and audio jack.
my goal is connecting the nexus to my lcd tv with a controller such a usb gamepad.
any benefits for the pogo pins? should i connect MHL to the back of the dock?
i already bought the screen protector and mhl. will be buying a soft holster pouch if my droid x one doesnt fit in and probably some sort of case. maybe the one with the kickstand. and a battery
just bought a black leather fitbag case for it, also looking at buying a battery pack for it to charge on the go
Iv ordered a cheap ebay case, the leather flip one for when im out, £5 cant go wrong....
I want to be able to connect my Nexus to my Tv and watch videos and also play emulated games using controllers, so I'm getting the MHL Adapter and HDMI Cable. Free shipping on amazon? don't mind if I do.

For what you're using it for, the 2nd one won't work, unless you plug the mhl cable directly into the phone (the port should be open since it's in landscape). Everyone needs to keep in mind that the 2nd one only charges it. It WILL NOT connect to a computer for file transfer, nor will it support mhl/HDMI out.
In terms of ease of use and function, I prefer the 2nd one though, because (going off how the nexus one worked) you can just drop the phone in/take it out one handed easily; no need to line the port up. This actually works better than the n1, since it would always fall over if you weren't careful (since it was oriented in portrait mode). In addition, the phone should automatically connect to the dock through bluetooth, which I loved on the N1.
Hope this helps your decision. Oh, and I'm definitely getting the official Samsung landscape dock
so, in the back of the official dock i can connect, for example, a gamepad/controller and since the dock is landscape, i can connect to the phone the mhl cable, is that right?

For the official portrait dock, you may or may not be able to connect everything to the back of the dock. It depends on if Samsung is foolish or not.
For the official landscape dock (with the pins) the back can ONLY be used for charging the phone. The controller and HDMI out would have to be placed in the port of the phone itself, assuming that it actually shows while sitting in the dock (I don't know if it even does). The whole point of this dock is to be a stylish desk clock/charger, and nothing else. (Again, going off of the nexus one dock. There's an extremely slight possibility that they've improved the pin connector tech, but as far as I know, it wouldn't be enough to port full video through)
So for your uses, get the portrait dock. It connects to the phone via usb, and while it may not be as fancy as the landscape one, it'll almost definitely be more useful to you.
thank you!

Well I know that a usb splitter will cover the gamepad, keyboard and mouse since they're all usb, but if you're considering a keyboard and mouse I'd say go for a bluetooth set. They connect extremely easily and work out of the box; I've tested it with my own mouse. Come to think of it, I'd say get a ps3 controller too. Then you could connect to the phone using bluetooth with the controller as well. Then you'd have no wires between you and the phone, which is slick in my opinion.
Of course if you don't have any of those and don't want to spend the money/already have a set you want to use then here's what you do: get something like one of these:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/29367-HT...HDMI-TV-Out-Cable-AC-M490-Reviews.htm#reviews
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/bizlink-mhl-to-hdmi-tv-out-adapter-black-p29839.htm
and connect it to the phone. Then if you still decide to do the usb route rather than bluetooth then connect your usb splitter to the adapter. That way the MHL adapter still can send out HDMI and send in the usb inputs from the splitter.
And you'll have a full game/workstation from your phone. Not sure how effective it will be (since the homescreen/some apps don't work in landscape) but it'll definitely be cool for games.

Actually, it's either MHL or USB. They use the same pins, so you can never get USB and MHL to work at the same time.
If you want HDMI output and controller input at the same time, Bluetooth is the only way to go.

Make sure it's a USB-OTG cable and not a simple adapter. That one doesn't say that it's OTG. May still be though.

Also, I bought this USB micro to female adapter from Expansys: http://www.expansys.ae/expansys-micro-usb-male-to-usb-female-adapter-223101/

True. I ordered a dock that should be here tomorrow of Saturday. First order of business is to open it up and find out how they wired it. Since it does plug into the usb port on the Xoom I can't imagine it'd be that hard to rewire it to a regular usb port.
.....Assuming I don't destroy the dock trying to open it.
I found some pics on another forum where someone opened up the standard dock and added a USB and HDMI port to it (by basically just running extender cables). It looks like the dock is really just a USB sound card. I have a USB sound card I got for 25 cents that I used in a project to turn a cheap router into an internet radio. I'll have to try plugging it into the Xoom and see if I get sound out of it.
I just got done modding my dock for USB. I know a number of people have already done this, but I did it slightly differently.
First, since I don't care about reversing this mod, I removed the speaker jack from the pcb. This way, I could use the factory hole for my usb cable.

Next, I de-soldered the existing USB pins from the pcb, and used a crimper to attach them to my new usb cable. The tabs on the pins (that hold them in place inside the white shell) are the perfect shape for crimping. So the pins become crimped splices. (You generally get a more durable connection with crimping than soldering, so I like this approach.)
And here's the finished product:

This is great for productivity related activities. A nice addition. How simple is it for the non-mechanically inclined? Or, better yet, can I pay you to make me one? Cost of dock, mod and shipping?
I did something similiar, but instead put a USB connector on the base. It looks nicer than it really is. The hole I cut was a bit too big so I filled it with hot glue and then put black electrical tape to make it look nice. Also the USB connector is purposely not flush with the housing as I have a 4G dongle that I plug in and I wanted room for it to stand straight up.
Oh and like you I no longer have audio out. Not a big deal as you can still use the headphone jack and I use BT to connect my audio.
Probably the best way to do it would be to mount a Mirco-AB socket in the back of the dock. Then you'd have the best of both worlds: you could plug a standard cable into the dock, and connect it to your pc; or you could plug in a OTG cable, and use it in host-mode.
I might try that with my second dock (that I have at work).
-Jim
Pity Motorola didn't release one with it in the first place
When I started the project I thought about putting both a micro-usb and the full-sized USB host connector with a switch to toggle between the two. Honestly though I hardly ever use the micro-usb to connect to my computer. I either use WiFi or simply plug a microsd into my laptop to transfer large files. So I gave up on that idea.
I am thinking about putting a small USB hub inside so I can have two or three USB host ports. I am thinking of USB 4G dongle, hard drive and possibly mouse/keyboard. If I can get that to work I also thought about tearing apart the USB-Ethernet dongle I have and putting an ethernet port on it as well. Maybe I just need to put all of that in a nice black box that could sit under the dock since I am running out of space on the back.
I've been thinking about converting my Droid X home dock into a Xoom dock lately. Looking at the USB/HDMI spacing on it I don't see why it wouldn't work. The only downfall of course would be needing to fit this into something more stable than the DX dock and then the lack of power to it. I've read some horror stories with docks and connector pins though so that might not be to huge an issue.
Anybody gone down this road?
The xoom only charges via the barrel connector or the surface pins. So any dock that has a USB connection that lines up would be fine for USB, but you won't be able to charge a xoom on any dock not designed for it.

Getting the audio AND other USB ports
Re huckfin's idea of a usb hub in the xoom dock, does that mean you could connect one of the hubs o/p ports back to the xoom pcb and get the audio back, as well being able to use the other hub outputs for other functions at the same time?

I do not think so. There is only one connection to the Xoom and I think it can only do one or the other. I am guessing the yellow wire tells the Xoom to configure the port for audio instead of data. The idea behind adding a USB HUB was so I could plug multiple items into my dock, such as mouse, keyboard, hard drive and 4G dongle. I get all of my audio over bluetooth so the USB port was well worth the sacrifice.
Hello,
From what I read, there are only 4 cables on a standard usb (5 for the mini usb), and on the picture I see 6 cables. Could you explain which cable is to connect to which cable and what are you doing with the cables that are not connected?
Thanks
Thanks HuckFinn it is a pity that would not work.
Maybe ICS will give us a proper USB port!

It is not that the Xoom does not have a proper USB port. It has one port that can be used as a device port, host port or when using an unmodified dock, audio. Since it is one physical connection I do not think it is possible for it to do more than one of these functions at a time. When it is being used as a host port you can use a hub to connect multiple devices, but the Xoom port is still only being used as a host.
Regarding the connections, coming from the USB connection in the dock are six wires. The yellow wire is the odd wire that I am assuming tells the xoom to port audio out of the USB connection. I have not done any testing to confirm this. I know the brown wire triggers the host mode when tied to the black wire. The other wires, black, red, white and green are the standard USB connections, -, +, d+ and d- .
I bought this one on eBay yesterday. Hopefully it works to transfer data to the computer.
Let us now how it is. It looks nice

I would be very careful using this dock. In the pictures it appears that it uses the very thin charging plug. I would be scared that any misalignment could damage either the dock or the pin inside the xoom.

Doesn't the official charger/speaker dock from Motorola also use the thin charging plug? I've looked at some youtube reviews and they seem to mention that it's not easy to dock due to that plug.

No, the standard and speaker docks use the gold contacts on the bottom of the Xoom to charge. The standard dock has the USB connector and the speaker dock has both usb and hdmi connectors, along with the two gold spring loaded pins which make contact with the Xoom.
Just finished my mod to the HD dock. Didn't have to splice any wires for this method. I had my spare Droid X dock lying around so I ripped the USB cable out of that for this mod. The DX USB cable mounts perfectly where the HD dock USB cable does, fits like a glove, and has a female end that's just about right to extend to the bass port on the HD dock.
- Removed DX dock USB cable
- Opened HD dock
- Removed bass port/screws and set aside in the dock box (no longer using this)
- Removed mounting bracket/screws for USB/HDMI/power
- Snipped off plastic w/pliers where existing USB cable was fed through (no cutting/splicing like I said - I did this to be able to remove the existing USB cable from the hole in the mounting bracket)
- Replaced HD's USB with the DX USB (fit like a glove)
- Reattached mounting bracket/screws for USB/HDMI/power
- Fed the new USB cable through where the bass port used to be
- Moved the original HD USB to the side (extension cable through the same bass port path would re-enable speaker capabilities)
- Double side taped the new USB to the end of the bass port hole (hot glue later)
- Re-assembled the dock
Pretty easy. Like I said, a little hot glue would have made the new USB port more stable, but I'll add this later. Also if I want to re-use the internal speaker I'd just need to get a micro USB extension cable and feed that through the bass port as well - just plug it to the female USB to enable the speaker.
OK, I am about to make the switch from iPhone to SGS3 as soon as they become available in the US.
My main concern right now is getting the audio to play through my current truck stereo deck (JVC KD-DV6200). Right now, I am using the Apple AV adapter that goes from the dock connector to composite (Red/white/yellow) and USB. This way, the phone charges while playing my tunes.
What are my options for keeping this same functionality. I want to be able to go from the microUSB to the composite (red/white) ports of the deck and also be able to charge the phone at the same time.
I am wanting to stay away from using the headphone jack as this usually results in some sort of hissing or humming interference.
I appreciate any info you can give. I'm simply trying to compile info so I can have things together when I finally jump ship.
the_buzz_man
You can get HDMI, VGA and DVI MHL adapters but not composite, and the S3 uses a new type of MHL cable so for now i think you can only find HDMI.
Other option would be to build your own cable, for more information check following links:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1395173&page=2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820275
Is it because this is such a new device that it is hard to find such a cable?
I have been very excited about dumping my iDevice and going Google but I must admit that this worries me somewhat. To me, a cable like this should be a basic accessory and should be readily available. Maybe I just got spoiled to that Apple AV cable.
I'm not trying to start a rant or anything, nor am I trying to dog android or apple. I'm just hoping that I missed something and that it will show up.
I'm still excited and anxious about trimming that apple tree.

Not to point out the obvious... but a single cable will not accomplish that. The micro USB is a digital port, not an analog port like the RCA jack inputs are on your stereo. So in order to convert the audio from the usb on the phone, it will need to go through a converter box to convert the signal.
You're pretty much better off just doing the headphone jack even though you dont want to. You could upgrade your stereo to one that does bluetooth streaming for cheaper than it would cost to get a converter.
Something like this *might* work... but I cannot guarantee it
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-REC2PC-Stereo-RCA-Cable/dp/B003R7KSYG
You would just need a standard USB to Micro USB adapter and hope it works.

Uh, apparently, it will. Granted, I don't know if it works w/ the GS3 (who knows what they flipped given the whole MHL adapter fiasco) but my guess is this is all generic android. Looking at the links posted above, it is possible to make a cable that will put the phone into home/car dock mode using resistors where the audio is then output via usb. I guess the sound isn't amplified so it sounds crummy w/o an amplifier, but if it's going out to a car preamp, it should be fine. When you think about it, this is how the docks work, sans the actual dock. I'm going to try to make this cable later as it doesn't look too hard.
I'm kinda sick of having to plug in two cables (w/ the GS3, it's one on top and one on the bottom which would be very awkward) and was debating whether to pursue a bluetooth solution, but this would work nicely.
This may not be the most attractive solution, but you can simply charge the phone with a car lighter plug and output the music through the headphone jack to the RCA cables. That type of cable certainly exists.

That is one strong possibility. The only problem I foresee is how the dock will work with the phone if it is in a case. I have always kept my phones in an Otterbox defender case, and you know how hard it is to find a dock that will hold this much less lock into a usb port too. I may have to look into getting a different case that can come off easy.
Then again, maybe I will have to check into making my own cable. Most of the cable will be tucked into the dash somewhere so the aesthetics are not that important.
Will have to start doing some searching on pinouts and designs soon.

There's a diagram in the post above. Essentially, the 365k resister on the ID pin launches it into dock mode, one is ground, one is to charge, and the other are left and right out. It doesn't look at all complicated. I'm going to make one later to see if it will work with my vibrant. Once I get my S3, hopefully it will still work. Then there's just the matter of making it look non-ghetto. You'd want to avoid electrical tape because the adhesive will probably melt in the car.
From reading those posts, it doesn't seem like it would be difficult at all to make this cable/adapter. Now, with the change they made to the MHL to HDMI adapter, I wonder if it changes the pinouts and the needed resistors for the S3.
I will be patiently awaiting some input/feedback from S3 owners that attempt this.

You could always get a microusb extension but then that dock would have to be hidden somewhere or something.
I'm trying to do something similar to this and was wondering if anyone had come across a similar issue. Please bear with me, and forgive my primitive artwork. Number 10 below poses my real question. Here's my setup, and some commentary.
I'm a n00b, so it won't let me insert an image directly, but you can see it as an attachment.

1) The Samsung EPL-3FHU adapter for Galaxy S3. Has 11-pin MHL input from phone, 5-pin micro-USB input from charger, and HDMI output toward display.
2) Standard micro-USB to USB cable from #1 to #3 (charger).
3) Griffin dual USB car charger.
4) Standard HDMI cable.
5) ViewHD Universal HDMI to Composite / AV Video Converter with HDMI input, optional (unnecessary) mini-USB power input, and composite A/V output to car display inputs.
6) Standard composite A/V cable.
7) The composite A/V inputs in my armrest. All gear above (#1-6) will be in my armrest, including #1, the MHL adapter.
8) Location of my phone - it fits perfectly in the ashtray opening when the ashtray door is open. I'll run a cable under the center console and out through the ashtray opening so that I can plug it in to my phone. The cable I need for this is number 10.
9) The phone, a Samsung Galaxy S III with its 11-pin MHL/micro-USB port.
10) This is the piece I don't have, can't find, and don't think I can make or re-create. I need it to be 11-pin micro-USB female on one end to plug into #1 above, and 11-pin micro-USB male on the other to plug into the phone. I think I need it to support the 11-pin Samsung micro-USB MHL pinouts (shown in macro/detail above) in order to pass both the audio/video and USB charging over the same cable. I might have to try the 5-pin flavors of MHL adapter (plus 5-to-11-pin adapter) and standard micro-USB cable to see if it works.
Any thoughts?
I would just splice into the mhl 11 pin cable and extend it as needed.
I've got a galaxy s3 but no mhl cable yet. Waiting for the price to drop a little...

Hi futaris - thanks for the reply. The problem I have with that is two-fold. One, the actual 11-pin micro-USB section of the MHL adapter is very short, and doesn't leave a lot of room to actually snip wires, pull back insulation, and solder on an extension (to all 11 wires). Also, it's a one-shot deal with that option. If something goes wrong I'm out of $40 USD. That's why I was mainly avoiding using that method. If I use the 11-pin to 5-pin adapter tip, which functionality would I lose (charging, video, audio)? I don't need USB OTG in the car. That may be a better bet here.

The 5 pin adapter doesn't cost you any HDMI functionality or charging. It only costs you USB OTG that I know of.

Ok, so I tried the older 5-pin MHL adapter with the 11-pin to 5-pin adapter tip and it works. However, when I tried to use a standard micro-USB female to male extension cable (www .amazon.com/Micro-B-Female-Extension-Manhattan-307420/dp/B007TLEDTW), it wouldn't pass any video or audio. Are the pinouts from the 11-to-5-pin tip different than a standard micro-USB cable? Can anyone think of another way to allow me to place the MHL adapter further away (maybe 5ft) from the phone itself? Has anyone tried one of these along with the 11-to-5-pin adapter for the S3? www .amazon.com/gp/product/B006V7F380

I have heard that you can't extend USB very far, but I have no data to back that up. How about a longer HDMI cable instead?
***EDIT***
USB Host DOES work with Flash Drives. For information see post 3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37201971#post37201971
This is now my main focus. So I figure why not everyone post up what devices they got to work with the Kindle Fire 2 and/or what methods it took for you to do so.
3x Different Flash Drives: Not Working However one of their LED's Illuminate
USB Keyboard: Not Working
Logitech M570 Wireless Trackball: Working
I also tried a non powered hub, it didn't work. The Green LED Illuminated but nothing more. When connected to my Galaxy S 3 I can have multiple devices attached at a time. I tore the Hub down and found that it has a blank slot for power. I wired soldered in a 0.75a Samsung Wired Charger to it. It Illuminated the LED, As well as it illuminated the Power LED in Orange on the Kindle but no devices worked on the Hub. I tested the power output of the USB Ports and it was a little more than 5v per port.
Device: Kindle Fire 2
Rooted and TWRP'ed with the Nightly of CM10.1 1-20-2013
Will keep trying. As stated in another thread, that its simply power. After testing these things out, I don't think its power related. Either the kindle just doesn't have the "Drivers" if thats what you'd call it, or it simply can not run anything but a mouse. I hope that is not the case. It will ruin all appeal in my eyes.
If you're rooted, have you tried installing StickMount?
Might work for the flash drives.
I tried, Stickmount tries. You can tell its trying to work something out. So more tests with a cut up usb cable on the OTG cable does in fact show there is a voltage issue. My Galaxy puts out perfect 5v. The Kindle puts out around 2.5v. I tried making another OTG cable but failed. I guess its just not getting connection to the extra pin. So I have a USB Extension I'm gonna split open and power it. So I don't have to hack up my only working OTG.
The main issue I'm having with this is, my current power unit is a measly 0.75a. And It charges the device. So I figure there will still be a voltage issue due to the device charging. So I could cut the red wire going to the device for now. But not sure if the device will realize this somehow and just not work. Thoughts? I've seen this done before when someone made themselves a powered OTG Hub system out of a couple USB Cables.
I'll continue till I'm too tired to think hehe.
***Edit***
Ok couple hours later.... lol I had a USB Extension, I cleanly just slit it down the m iddle and soldered in the two power wires from a samsung micro usb charger. The Power is 5v at 0.75a. So its not much. I know it wouldn't charge my nexus nor Galaxy Tab, but it charges the Kindle, or at least the kindle says it is. I doubt it really is. Anyway I soldered it in, cleaned up the surgery started some testing on my phone first. I connected a Micro USB cable to one end and then the other to my phone, and then the Kindle. It charges, or again says it is (*kindle might require more amperage). So Next I connect the OTG Cable to the other end and connect it to my phone, It charges through the OTG Cable. Next the Kindle, it does not charge the kindle. Possible amperage requirements, I don't know yet.
So onto the test without StickMount, Failure. It acts the same.
Test with StickMount, Well I'll let this screen shot explain most of it:

It worked! StickMount notification pops up and I found the flash drive in the current location. Inside the SD Card under a folder called /usbstorage/sda1/. Not exactly my first choice, not sure if this can be changed to go into mnt or somewhere else. The Device itself doesn't notice the flash drive. So if you go into System/Storage, it does not show the flash drive. But it is fully functional. I accessed some files without any issues.
So my final consensus: The Kindle Fire 2 currently has OTG/USB Host Capabilities. From the USB Host Diagnostics I ran, its fully functional. However the main issue is Power. The second issue is the device on the most current (1/20/2013 CM10.1 Nightly) rom doesn't have the proper... I don't know the right wording for it, but lets say drivers since I'm a pc guy. I'm sure with more development, it can control any device with the only issue being power related. This takes away from the meaning of "On The Go". Having some sort of 5v power source connected to your device while your trying to use a hard drive or something else is going to be a pain in the ass for most people. For me it really does not matter since the device is going to be setup in my car for media sourcing as well as game play. So a 32gb flash drive and a Xbox 360 controller is all I will be using.
I will be doing more testing with multiple devices but it is 4am right now. One more thing, Bluetooth abilities are possible with a cheap dongle. However for some reason the Kindle recognizes it as a physical keyboard. I have tested this on other devices in the past so I believe it is possible with some more development. But that's far in the future and still of course require additional power.
Goodnight guys.
I have 3 different thumb drives.
Sony 4GB = does not work
SanDisk cruzer slide 16GB = does not work
SanDisk cruzer 8GB = Works
The regular cruzer is probably 5+ years old. I have access to others and will update my post when I get them.
I'm on PowerPoint45 cm 10.1 using chainfires stickmount.

Nice. The regular flash prob requires less power. I noticed one of mine which was larger almost worked. But would shut off prob to not enough power. But a newer one wouldn't light up at all.
Plans for today: To re build that USB Hub I was messing with last night. I desoldered the USB cable off of it to solder in a Micro USB, But I don't remember if it worked. I then tried to turn it into an OTG direct 4port hub but nothing happened. So I'm sure I screwed something up. But the initial results should be a powered, 4port Micro USB OTG Hub. I just hope I have enough juice to make it work for not only charging the Kindle but powering the devices on the hub. I have a Galaxy Tab Official 2.0a car charger I can try out. I want to be able to have at the least, a 32gb Flash Drive and a 360 Gaming Controller.
Well I got some done today. I found an old phone charger that was 1a. I finally just used my OTG Cable and soldered it in place of the std usb connector on a cheap USB Hub. I'm sure everyone has the same hub I'm using, I have two, one says Microsoft on it, the other says AMD but they are super cheap and are given out everywhere you go:
Its a non powered USB hub, however when opened up there is a bare spot for a power connector. Middle pin is 5v + and the two around it are common Ground -.
Don't be strayed by my crap solder work. I'm using a cheap harbor freight soldering iron and the new charger has very thick wire so it didn't really fit in the small holes. The ground is just directly connected to everything else thats ground related so I grounded it there. That way the two wires aren't soo close together.
I have now successfully tested 3 flash drives, NTFS, Fat32 and some strange Fat32 drive plus my Trackball. As well as this I have successfully charged my Galaxy SIII off of the hub. I wouldn't exactly recommend this unless your running like a legit 2a charger. I only did it to test out power requirements. I think either my cable is damaged too or I'm at the limit of power the small 1a can handle because every once in a while the hub shuts off. I think its just cable related.
Here is everything connected as you can see.
However the tablet it self is not charging. At least the icon on the notification bar doesn't say so. I have tested the voltage here and its 5v. But IDK? Maybe the Kindle wont allow it? BUT, with all my testing, the battery has stayed at 88%. I'm gonna try to kill it some more. Maybe with some transferring files between drives.
lol As I'm typing this, I sit down for a second with the tablet on the carpet floor and just stare at it. I've noticed that some reason the led turns off and on at random times. But I've never seen it say its charging. Well the screen just dimmed but didn't shut off so I get up to check real fast and when I turn it on, it says 88% - Charging! But then instantly goes back to 88% - Not Charging when the screen lights up. And there it goes again (Please bare with me as I'm doing this all this very second.) Looks like it just needs some more amperage. 1a is not enough to power everything and charge the device.
I was worried that the kindle wasn't going to support Charging OTG. Well I happen to have a spare 2a Galaxy Tablet charger and no Galaxy Tab.... I'll try it out and get back to you guys!

This looks good! If you want, once you are done with the testing, I can try and write up a guide with your words on how to do it then let you post that. I did the same for some of the stickied threads. It looks like you're almost done and I think this would be a really good info thread once compiled nicely. Stuff like how to do OTG, what works, what needs a powered HUB, stuff like that. I personally will probably never use OTG, but I see the value and I like what it can be used for.
Best of luck!
That's nice. lol I understand I talk a lot, but when it comes to things I must have, like more than 5gb of memory on a device that should have a few TB . It would be nice for others to try out things to see what works and what doesn't. Because to have a powered USB Device is kinda not the point of OTG "On The Go". But like someone figured out that one of his older Flash drives worked, so hopefully others chime in too.
If you wanna do that, you have my approval. Just make sure it suits what I did, "Dedicated OTG". or "Guaranteed OTG". Since that's what I was mainly working towards. This discussion thread is mainly to locate what works and what doesn't and the main OTG Capabilities of the Kindle Fire2. I don't plan on changing much else to what I have already done except adding a larger psu to the hub so it charges the device while powering the hub and its devices for my own personal gain. I want to keep this open so people can throw up what they have learned as well so the information is out there for others. I personally hate going into a device and not knowing.

I should get an OTG cable. I have a small flashdrive, not sure about the name or brand since the size made it temporarily misplaced. It's the same size as the wireless receivers though for most modern mice and keyboard so it's SUPER small, which I actually wouldn't mind tucking the cable into my case, plus it's 32GB. The issue on PC, is the transfer rate is a little low, but that may be because it uses so little power, which I'm hoping.
Any good places to get an OTG cable?
Ebay, Amazon (great place for cables)
https://www.google.com/search?q=OTG...29,d.aWc&fp=4a19662fa4882be9&biw=1920&bih=965
Just a quick search. You can also make one, if space is an issue. You just need a MicroUSB and a female USB. Pin 5 gets soldered to pin 4 on the MicroUSB and bam! Making one would help with space issues since you can tuck the wires easier. If you are good at soldering.

Is an OTG cable special or just F-USB and M-MicoUSB?
If it's just those, then I can go poke around Frys and Radioshack for one.
I don't know anything about soldering, how much is a good kit to get started? I think a friend of mine has one and knows how to use it, so I can ask him, but I realize it's something I should learn especially with the hardware mods I would love to do. If I can't find a cable in stores, or if it's special (I ask that because most employees at frys and whatnot aren't very helpful or knowledgable, so I don't want them giving me something that won't work, but if it's just those ends I'm looking for, I can do that) then I may just look into soldering my own and learning that. I see they're around $50 online but I don't want to screw myself over there.
You can chose a decent soldering iron anywhere from 15 to like 80 bucks. I recently saw some nice ones with adjustable power levels for good price. And tons of different tips. My brother Skorpn has the more expensive one that heats up fast and has adjustable power settings to fit any projects needs. Hr has a nice soldering station I wish I could use more. I however just have a cheap harbor freight iron with a fine tip from radio shack and I use the thinnest silver solder avail there as well. Flux is also a must.
Anyway. Otg mode is accomplished on the micro USB side. They have 5 pins instead of 4. The 5th is used for doing all sorts of things with the right add one tho. If you solder in a small wire to it and jump it to pin 4 which is ground, it turns on otg. Not really hard to do. You can make one decently. Just need a good micro USB cable and a female normal USB cable. Solder them together and then do the otg modifications.
Other than doing it yourself, they are very cheap. But if you have the spare cables, it doesn't hurt to play around.

Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire2
I don't know what ap your talking about. But no. The Kindle Fire 2 only puts out half the voltage when in OTG Mode. So only certain things will work without additional power. Your mouse will work just fine, especially if its a wireless mouse, since the wireless device doesn't require hardly any power. Some other devices will work too. You don't need a mount app for using devices, only for Flash Drives. And so far out of every one I've used the best one is Chainfire's StickMount. Chainfire is the creator of Superuser.
Anyways, I'm not using a 2a charger to power my USB OTG Hub, and it powers all 4 devices and charges the device with ease. Cannot wait to have this thing installed.
OTG testing
After reading this thread I thought I would have a go and do some testing myself. so I found a USB y cable teamed that with a female to female USB adaptor so it would extend my OTG cable but allow me to pipe in some power (5v off a arduino) off the y cable. I have got my mouse working and USB flash drive but I cant get my Xbox 360 wired controller to work

You know the amperage of the power source you are using? It might just be not enough power. Because the device itself will take from it also. Its pretty much splitting it. Which is why I went with a legit Galaxy Tab 2a charger since its one of the most powerful chargers I've come across. I hope it works. Since bluetooth doesn't work on the OTG yet, I need the 360 controller to work. I will be trying a wireless controller and one of those Microsoft adapters soon. Hopefully it works! I'd love to play some video games in the car

You have a good point there, I haven't tested the amperage that comes out of a arduino but I don't think it would be much. I could try and hock up a iPad charger which I think is 2amp.

I have just tested the Xbox 360 controller being powered from a iPad charging plug and now joy. It lights up but then goes off
I'm making my own otg cable tonight if the spare usb cable I found works for data and not just charging. Basically I have a female usb port on a cable that I used to splice in with an original Xbox controller plug to be able to use usb sticks as memory cards for my Xbox to be able to install gentoo Linux on my Xbox (original Xbox controllers are usb 1.0 with a proprietary plug type) so I know the female port works fine for data transfers.
Eventually I'll buy some plugs to solder onto both the usb and Xbox cables so I can yank the female plug from the otg cable and snap it right onto the Xbox plug instead of having to constantly re-splice them or buy a new usb extension cable for the female end/buy a pre made otg cable.

IDK how thats going. I don't think anyone is working on it since the KF2 doesn't have bluetooth to begin with. When I connect my cheapo BT Dongle, it doesn't allow me to turn the switch to on. However it does see the BT Dongle and thinks its a keyboard of some sort. Which would be nice because I have a really nice BT Keyboard for Android I wanna use.
Also would be nice to use PS3 Controllers. I'm going to attempt the wireless 360 controller with the adapter one of these days, whenever I can focus some cash in that direction. I really want a wireless 360 controller on my KF2 so I can play some of the higher end games as well as the older Emulated games. Just think its too cool
I wonder how you folks connect your cells to TVs and monitors? There's a bunch of USB C to HDMI adaptors but they all seem to be designed for the newest Macbooks with USB C port(s) only. Is it even a possibility to transfer media thru USB C of LG V20? Kinda annoying to use Chromecast and watch YouTube ads and other crap instead of connecting cell directly to TV and watch whatever I need. Please advise!
USB c to slimport. Or I connect to my Samsung 65JS9500 wirelessly. No ports needed.

Something like that http://www.ebay.com/itm/351594598444 apparently will work? I just wanted to hear if someone uses one of those mhl adaptors and knows they are compatible. Wireless streaming isn't working for me as I don't have any WiFi at home.
No mhl. USB c to slimport.
Hey, the LGV20 can achieve HDMI connection via Slimport, they just released it today but is already unavailable, I contacted Slimport and they sent me the link to purchase it via Amazon, but I have to wait until it is back in stock. Here is the link - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M733OQA
So to be clear, the LG V20 does not support MHL, the hdmi connection is achieved via Slimport which is different technology

Great, guys! Thanks for commenting! I didn't even know about slimport after using several Sammy cells with microUSB and using same MHL cable (which costs like 3$) Now I gotta pay 30$ but at least I know it'll work fine!

That is a pretty good price for those, other sites I've looked at didn't come close to that price.
In other news, I'm curious about ones like this (TrippLite). They make a big deal out of the USB-C port being usable for 60W Power Delivery, and don't actually state whether that is the only capability of that port. I'm wondering whether one can plug a cable from one's computer into that port, both charge the phone and do data transfer at the same time. Strongly implied it doesn't have that capability, but it could have it. Grr, more detail needed.

I use the Microsoft Display Dock to connect my V20 to TV. The package comes with a dock, a type-c to type-c cable and a type-c charger which can charge the phone while playing video on TV. And the dock has display port and three USB ports which mean you can connect keyboard, mouse and usb storage at the same time!

I am using this $30 SlimPort adapter and I get 4K output (but only at 30Hz, not 60Hz).
The other issue is there is no charging port on the adapter. So you cannot charge and watch videos at the same time.
But overall, it is working as advertised and a nice touch is that the phone screen automatically dims when connected to an external display.

Thanks for mentioning this. I was using this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IUXA9YK because it could charge the phone whereas the slimport could not. And while it worked it was emitting a sound similar to a "cheap power supply coil noise" that made me uncomfortable using it.
For $20 more the Microsoft Dock is much better made...(metal even!). And it comes with all the extras you mentioned...
The downside is that it needs a power adapter to work...whereas the other one didn't...but it's worth the tradeoff imho.
I have an LG monitor with USB-C so all I do is connect a USB-C cable to my phone and the monitor and it charges and displays the V20 screen.

Radio shack sells one that works ive tried it myself. I believe its $39.99
https://www.amazon.com/CableCreation-USB-C-Adapter-Macbook-Chromebook/dp/B0123PJ9BK?th=1
these have been working fine for me, and I also have the displayport version which also works on the V20
Can't you do simcast? Or something else over WiFi or Bluetooth? Do you have to physically connect the device to a tv?
Im way late to this party
Tried the insignia adapter
I have been tinkering with this issue since purchasing a V20 a couple of weeks ago.
Since I travel for work and my Shield tablet LTE is getting long in the tooth, I thought this could be my magic bullet solution...
My findings:
Chromecast/Miracast works great so long the chromecast is connected to the internet.
The gen1 Microsoft wireless display adapter has horrible lag.
Then I found the J5 Create usb-c dongle. Its a pricey 80.00 USD.
I have not tried the ethernet port but everything else works with the exception of the pass thru charging.
Oddly enough, the LG G5 (my work phone) does charge quickly using this device. Yes, all ports do work besides untested ethernet.
Im not sure if this limitation is harware or software related since both phones share very similar innards.
Too bad the official Slimport adapter does not have pass thru charging since that would be the best way to go...
If you find a solution that allows for pass thru charging, please let me know.
Update: I have now tried the insignia branded adapter. This one as well as the J5 Create version do not charge the V20. The battery icon indicates that it is charging but it dischages at 2% per 10 minutes.
The G5 indicates charging and actually does charge.
So, the search continues for an adapter that will actually charge the V20.
The ones made for MacBooks and computers with USB-C work with the V20, I have bought and tried many as I work at an electronics retailer. Even the hub ones that add USB ports, check out the Satechi USB C HDMI hub, it gives you passthrough charging as well as 2 3.0 USB ports and an HDMI.
Edit: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J4BO0X8/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_3sQGybFCQG0WA
I use this to connect to HDMI display, wireless USB keyboard and mouse, and USB to Ethernet adapter all while maintaining a steady charge.
The reason behind this compatibility is that the V20 is actually one of the first few phones with a real USB 3.0 (that's right not 2.0!) type C port so basically any USB 3.0 C peripherals will work as they are in spec with the connector.
Actually, Slimport follows all DisplayPort standards. I decided to take a chance and picked up an Insignia multi adapter from BB today. I'm very pleased to announce to you all that it works beautifully. Video stream has very little lag, if any at all, it charges the phone while mirroring. Even Netflix didn't complain at all. It also throws in a USB 3 port that works fine as well. I tested all of these before posting, after watching about an hour of Netflix and Amazon videos, barely warm to the touch.
