Samsung Says a HDMI Out Cable Exists

According to Samsung there is a MicroUSB to HDMI cable for HDMI output!

The only problem is that the part number referenced isn't on their site....yet.

This would be perfect if the vibrant would support it. Found the cable via google for $20. Just search for "samsung micro usb to hdmi". Has any one found a tv out option in the settings? I've heard of the analog out but didn't really pay attention to the software side.

How likely is it that this would work with a Vibrant? If it is I'll definitely be picking one up!

The RCA video out from the headset jack definitely works.
I have done it on my vibrant. Sims will not work and Avatar will not work. A screen saying that it is not compatible or something come sup... but the entire screen of the phone and everything else will work... no idea about the hdmi though...

Does anyone wonder/know if Dolby Digital 5.1 can be output with 720p video on this thing? Something tells me that might be too much to ask, but if that's possible on this phone that would totally kick ass.

The HDMI cable in the FAQ is ECC1HU0BBEBSTD, PN in quote listed above is for the Composite cable. Linked page is for a possibly non compatible cable.

that cable wont work on the Vibrant cuz it's for the proprietary Samsung Data/Charge port to HDMI. the phone it references is the Instinct, which doesnt have a microUSB port... it uses the original Samsung charge/data port.
we need MicroUSB to HDMI.

ya someones gotta buy an off brand before the "official" cable comes out and see if it works.. not only that but see if it displays everything just like the rca cables but in hi=def.

I'm wondering how this would work? Micro-B USB port has 5 pins + the shield. HDMI is 19 pins and 6 (3 pairs) are for the audio and video data, but due to the TMDS signaling you also need a pair of pins for clock (so 8 total).
I'm also guessing that some special mode would need to be implemented so that the Galaxy devices will know to output the video signal to the USB port vs using it as a charge or data port.
I'm also wondering if this is really a micro USB cable to HDMI or one of the Type D to HDMI cables? That would make sense otherwise Samsung would be getting in the business of creating custom cables. On the flip side the Type D connector still has 19 pins.

I just cant see putting video over a serial bus, I would need some sort of conversion. Either way, 5 pins is no where enough to do the video and even just mono stereo. IF the cell phone can convert the video and audio into just pure data and the send it down a USB cable then there would HAVE to be a box somewhere between the phone and the TV to convert it back to video and audio. A TV is not going to know what to do with the data from a USB port. This seems to be a miss print on Samsung's web page. Plus, if you click on compatible devices it shows 2 spinpoint hard drives, no phones.

The Samsung cable has an overly-large HDMI plug-end. My guess puts a small blob of conversion circuitry inside there, drawing power either via the USB or by vampiring off of the HDMI. (The HDMI spec has a +5V line, but that's only for Sources, whereas this is a Destination. It may or may not have power, I haven't looked that deep into the tech docs).
Bandwidth isn't an issue - 800x480 can be pumped over USB2.0, which is what we're looking at here.
Plus, the thing apparently exists. So it likely works.

Assuming this HDMI cable is the real deal, it should be able to output 1080p which would be HUGE news. Although I'm skeptical like everyone else whether or not the microUSB connection can really handle this kind of data.
The cable itself has a larger end because it has a microUSB plug in it to allow the phone to charge while it's connected to the TV. It's pure speculation if there's any advanced circuitry in there to assist with outputting video data.

I agree about the size of the connector housing and I was thinking the same thing but then retracted that thought because I wasn't sure if it was quite big enough to do that type of conversion.
I see no point in having an HDMI cable if we're limited to 800x480. Why not just stick with the Composite cable in the headphone jack? HDMI would insinuate that you can play your 720P videos over it on a High Def TV.

800x480p digital would look a decent amount better than 480i over composite, so it wouldn't be the worst thing.
I'm wondering about that port on the side of the HDMI end, though - Micro USB power maybe?

What accesssories are you ordering with your Nexus?

I'm planning on ordering from Expansys and getting at least the MHL adapter (would the Expansys one work as well as the official Samsung one?), a car kit, and maybe this sleek looking case once it's in stock.

I would get the HTC MHL adapter. It looks much better and the ports are arranged more logically.

I have a soft pouch for when im out. I bought a usb connector so I can plug in a usb adapter for a mouse and keyboard or plug in a flash drive. I also bought a 7000mAh battery pack to charge it on the go. I did ponder on whether to buy a spare battery but that means turning the phone off, taking the battery out and changing it so a battery pack which can recharge a nearly empty battery at least 3 times makes more sense. It also has 2 outputs so you can charge 2 phones at once or power any usb device from it .
Im waiting until the samsung car dock and portrait multimedia dock are released. I was going to get an mhl adapter but I need a desk dock anyway and the docks for the nexus will have hdmi ports in them so you can output direct to a tv or monitor without the need for ugly connectors.

Wow, didn't know they Nexus could act as a USB host. Does that mean you can read any file off a flash drive? What about portable hard drives (I'm assuming they would need external power)?
That battery pack looks nice, too bad they don't have it on expansys. It will cost me too much to ship each item from individual websites along with my Nexus
Edit: Just found the Usb host on the go thread and it seems that it is not supported out of the box (yet), you might need to flash a custom kernel for it to work until Google fixes it. That said I still ordered the cable

Paul at Modaco has made a custom kernel to support usb drives *HERE*. I havent tested that function yet though so I cant confirm it works.

For what you're using it for, the 2nd one won't work, unless you plug the mhl cable directly into the phone (the port should be open since it's in landscape). Everyone needs to keep in mind that the 2nd one only charges it. It WILL NOT connect to a computer for file transfer, nor will it support mhl/HDMI out.
In terms of ease of use and function, I prefer the 2nd one though, because (going off how the nexus one worked) you can just drop the phone in/take it out one handed easily; no need to line the port up. This actually works better than the n1, since it would always fall over if you weren't careful (since it was oriented in portrait mode). In addition, the phone should automatically connect to the dock through bluetooth, which I loved on the N1.
Hope this helps your decision. Oh, and I'm definitely getting the official Samsung landscape dock

For the official portrait dock, you may or may not be able to connect everything to the back of the dock. It depends on if Samsung is foolish or not.
For the official landscape dock (with the pins) the back can ONLY be used for charging the phone. The controller and HDMI out would have to be placed in the port of the phone itself, assuming that it actually shows while sitting in the dock (I don't know if it even does). The whole point of this dock is to be a stylish desk clock/charger, and nothing else. (Again, going off of the nexus one dock. There's an extremely slight possibility that they've improved the pin connector tech, but as far as I know, it wouldn't be enough to port full video through)
So for your uses, get the portrait dock. It connects to the phone via usb, and while it may not be as fancy as the landscape one, it'll almost definitely be more useful to you.

Well I know that a usb splitter will cover the gamepad, keyboard and mouse since they're all usb, but if you're considering a keyboard and mouse I'd say go for a bluetooth set. They connect extremely easily and work out of the box; I've tested it with my own mouse. Come to think of it, I'd say get a ps3 controller too. Then you could connect to the phone using bluetooth with the controller as well. Then you'd have no wires between you and the phone, which is slick in my opinion.
Of course if you don't have any of those and don't want to spend the money/already have a set you want to use then here's what you do: get something like one of these:

Actually, it's either MHL or USB. They use the same pins, so you can never get USB and MHL to work at the same time.
If you want HDMI output and controller input at the same time, Bluetooth is the only way to go.

Make sure it's a USB-OTG cable and not a simple adapter. That one doesn't say that it's OTG. May still be though.

I use mhl adapter + power supply
I tried two option.
1 is to connect the hdmi out to a hdmi to dvi adapter and then connect to the monitor with a dvi cable --> The result is a black screen .. the monitor light is green(good) (cable is dvi-d single link)

I can't find a reason this wouldn't work. The second option sounds like a bad cable, but the first just sounds like the signal is sent black. You aren't on CM7 are you?

Both of the cables are working from my ATI 5850 HD
I'm on lightning.. (I know the development stopped , But I didnt have the power to change to a new one, I just waiting to ICS)
Should I try changing the rom ?
What rom are you suggesting?

It could be a HDCP problem since the samsung dongle uses HDMI.
I don't know i HDCP is used, but if it is, it's surely the problem. HDCP is a copy protection scheme that uses a kind of "handshake" signal across pheriperals.
In this case you'll need a dongle that does the handshake for you and passes the stream through to a i.e. DVI port..

This is very strange. I have the same adaptors as you do and it works fine with Dell monitor. I also have a custom rom so I don't think this is ROM related.

I'm having a similar issue as you do, but I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus. I'm using a HDMI-to-DVI adapter and it's been causing issues with all 5 monitors I tested with today. It works fine with all 3 HDTVs when they were connected to MHL directly via HDMI. I have one monitor that has both, DVI and HDMI, ports and while the DVI doesn't work well (it flickers like crazy), the direct HDMI connection was superb. I'm starting to think that it's the issue with the HDMI-to-DVI adapter that might be losing some important signal sent by MHL or something.

I don't use an adapter,but an HDMI-to-DVI cable.On my old monitor(A 19" ViewSonic with 4:3 aspect ratio,I don't even remember the rest of the details),it doesn't show anything at all.On my new monitor though,which is a Samsung 24" one(although I do not quite remember exactly what model it is and I'm on my laptop now),it kinda works,but resolution is ****,colors are ape**** and it flickers like hell.So I'd say don't bother with it.It seems to only work fine with TVs and HDMI-enabled monitors unfortunately.

Yeah. It seems like DVI doesn't work good at all. People should only buy a MHL adapter if they have HDMI-enabled TV and monitors.

mine works with local content, but not streamed
I've setup a monitor in almost exactly the same way as you. If I try playing a movie off the SD card, it plays fine and looks great. If I try and stream from PS3 Media server it chokes and either sits at loading or goes to black screen.
Found it does the same even on an HDMI tv, so not sure what the problem is. Seems similar perhaps to people who couldnt get the MHL to work with wifi.

Its possibly the MHL adapter itself...
I had a similar problem however in reverse... My first MHL adapter would not let me connect to my TV (Phone - MHL - HDMI - TV) however i could use a DVI/HDMI adapter cable to go into a computer screen (Phone - MHL - HDMI/DVI - Computer Screen). I think its like what fluke2k said about the HDCP handshake thing. My TV tried the handshake with the MHL adapter but because it was an El-Cheapo it didnt respond and the TV wouldnt accept data from that port, whereas the computer monitor didnt worry about it and everything worked awesome.
I got a second MHL adapter that has a HDMI cable attached (altogether a better system, long microUSB cable to go to phone, then HDMI out and a USB Micro female cord (not a plug) to provide power, very well designed IMO) Anyways with that cable no problem to go into anything i have tried yet.
Its possible that its using a function of HDMI to determine what its connecting to, or that its connected into a HDMI device. Since the adapter isnt doing that, your getting no signal being put through.

thats sort of like the MHL adapter i have, works awesome for me. Bought it off ebay for less than $5. YMMV.
My suggestion for you: Try your various shops around town, see if they have an adapter. Check their return policy, tell them you have a MHL adapter that does not do what you want to do, if possible take your setup with you and test it on equipment there.

I have the same setup, and I experience the same problem.
I can't get HDMI out.
I am using Thebyani 4.3 Siyah 3.2.7 Kernel. (others have confirmed that MHL works on this ROM)
The thing is that when I connect the HDMI cable to the screen, the phone seems to think that it is connected, i.e. the sound stops and the screen rotates. My monitor even shows DVI in the corner but stays black.
I have tried it on a friend who has HDMI input, same thing... the screen seems to recognise signal but blank screen.
Any ideas? is it a faulty converter?

same problem i have also the same thing like your but only black screen my mobile screen rotate to landscape mode auto when i connect to monitor ...when i disconnect the cable my monitor blink and shows some time red some time yellow some time green color mean every time time i disconnect the cable its show different color for a moment

720P only alas!
I've done a few tests with mine. If you use any kind of HDMI to DVI adapter, the MHL adapter seems to operate in 720P mode. Works fine in portrait, if a little fuzzy of course on a Full HD monitor, but the real issue is running the device in landscape, which of course is what you really want from this... using DVI, you lose the left and right edges making it unusable.
Seems to work fine on a HDMI equipped HD TV though where 1080P works, and as long as the "just scan" option is enabled on the TV, it all fits properly. My Samsung 24" monitors unfortunately don't have such an option for scaling the image in "digital mode".
Shame I can't use my older DVI monitors for this
So if you want to use this device... you'll need presumably a monitor with a real HDMI input, or a "TV".

Have been eyeing the device for a while now. Was planning to get Tab 7.7 earlier, but that screen size cannot be much used for office productivity. So have been summing up the budget for this one.
In my typical usage scenario, I have to keep it upright (for work or for presentations) connected with a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and display output to most common VGA projectors in case of presentations. Also would like at least one, preferably two USB OTG ports to connect my external flash/harddrive or any other accessories.
I believe the USB OTG and HDMI OUT functionality on this tablet is both handled by the MicroUSB connector at the bottom, correct me if I am wrong.
To envisage my needed accessory, is there any dock available, on which the tablet sits in the landscape orientation, connects via microusb connector, keeps charging and outputs the MHL HDMI disaply at the same time. On the back of the dock, supposedly should be the HDMI female connector, USB OTG port(s) and card reader ports. I know for connecting to a VGA projector I also have to use a HDMI male to VGA female adapter.
If such a solution is available, then I can think of it as a useful office productivity tool. Thanks for the answer. I actually did my research and almost reached the same product as you have mentioned. Since you own a 10.1 2014 tablet, I believe this tablet does offer the same via standard 11-pin micro USB connector (instead of the propreitary Samsung connector used in earlier models).
I was able to find a couple of smart docks, which are advertised to work with GNII/III and Galaxy S3/S4, all of which I believe do have the 11-pin micro USB MHL connector. Please have a look at the following

2. By a long shot, since S3/S4 also have an 11pin micro USB connector, have any of you tried or can comment on whether this dock would work with a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 tablet. Theoretically and technically , i think it should but need your advice. Would the tablet fit in snug in the connector space given on the dock.

It's a pity Samsung doesn't release a Transformer-style tablet/dock combo. Asus keeps having more hardware problems than Samsung, and Samsung seemed happy for a while to try out every possible form factor.
The new Transformer Infinity (TF701T) straight out of the box has all the functionality that OP requests. Unfortunately early batches of the Infinity have had problems with their dock connectors, so to replace my old Transformer Prime I'm seriously thinking of jumping ship and getting a Note 10.1. It seems much better suited for use in tablet mode (smaller bezels, lighter), but I would miss the dock...

It's only a 5pin(actually 4) connector. Such a dock should be possible with a switch to manually change between usb/hdmi/cardreader etc.

Tested 2 docks from DX, so far kinda mixed results
one works kinda, has 2 x usb and both work, hdmi seems to output only at 720 p I think ( best way to check ??anyone??) , BUT charging isn't working it seems ( still testing, maybe trickle charge))

The usb seems to work fine, same issue with charging, and I can't seem to get the HDMI to work, still working and testing on the last part

I think you cannot get 2A charging current while using usb for data. Probably data mode is limited to 500mA, or 900mA.

Samsung is releasing an ethernet adapter with 2 usb ports for the Nok Pro 12.2 if it's micro usb 2.0 it should work with our tablet

found the Lindy online at their US store since i couldnt order from the UK site. you can see it here but i had to search part number to find it and no info was listed so you have to use the UK site to read up on it.

I'm pretty sure if you have the cable you don't need an extra program. It should just work.

Yep. And if your tv supports it wireless display too. Thought it would only work with LG tvs as that is what LG implied but I can sync to my samsung JS9500 just fine. Lag isn't too bad. And when doing screen changes or apps it looks like graphics glitch out but they don't. Haven't tested YouTube or my recorded videos yet. Have more important stuff to do first.
