[Q] can I use Lostkernal with Calkullins E4GT ROM? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm using the latest calkulin e4gt rom. The kernel it came with is rogue something. I'm wondering if I can use Lostkernal with this rom because I keep losing signal. Will I lose battery performance? How exactly do I switch out kernels?
Many thanks, new rom user.
Samsung longest phone name ever 4g touch

You can flash another kernal. Use Clockworkmod to flash it.
This video is a bit old, but it's an easy tutorial to follow:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZWyJ4N01Is
I'm not sure if LoSt kernal will affect the battery any differently than rogue, but I suspect it won't.
If LoS is that bad of an issue for you, and you haven't flashed the eg31 modem in the past, go look for how to install the new EK02 modem in the development forum. It appears to be the new modem to solve LoS.

Pretty much all our kernels are interchangeable so far. Just do a backup to be sure.

[Q] LoS on Several ROMS...?

So I have successfully rooted my E4GT and been so for awhile now. When I got into ROM's i started with the Starburst ROM with I can not remember the kernel... Now I am on Culkins V1.1 with LoStKerlelExp+.
Ever since I started with Starburst and still with Culkins ROMs I have had LoS from 1-5 times a day. Complete loss of any data and call ability. I must force a reboot.
Can anyone help me with what causes this? I have read that its the Kernel and I have heard it can be the ROM.
I would really love to fix this issue and continue to try out different ROMs
I trust this is in the proper posting category.
Thank you!

What he said. The stock kernel is usually the only way to avoid los, and even then there are numerous cases (as u probably well know) of totally stock phones getting hit with los. In the last couple of weeks I've run all flavors of roms/kernels out there and while the best kernel for avoiding los for me was/is LoStKerlelExp+, I still get em'. I'm now back to the stock rom/kernel (rooted, of course) and have had zero los since Friday when I went with this latest setup.
Stock pulled kernal. No Los in weeks. Even in low signal areas.

forgive my newbness, but I need some help understanding the difference/utility between the roms (starburst, Calkulin, etc) and the kernels (stock CWM rooted kernel, renegade, etc).
I rooted my phone using odin and flashed Starburst Rom 1.9.8 on it. As I understand it right now, ROMs come with kernels bundled in so when a rom is flashed a kernel is flashed along with it (right now under kernel my phone is reporting 2.6.35.14-rogue-ET-1.1.1+).
I have had some LOS issues and would like to use the Stock cwm root kernel with the Starburst rom. Is that something that would be stable/recommended? Can I just jump in CWM and flash the stock kernel? Or do I need to wipe everything and live with out Starburst if I want the stock kernel? What will I miss using the Stock kernel instead of the customer kernels?
Thanks for the help. Feel free to flame away AFTER you are kind enough to provide a little help.

You can flash any E4GT kernel you like in CWM. Just remember that kernels are also packaged with things. Some with different CWM versions, some with root and SU. None of that should really affect the ROM, but it might confuse you. For example, the latest CWM mixed into some recent kernels, enables the home button for select and the power button for back. If not aware of that ahead of time you might errantly believe you borked something.
Of course, you can also Odin kernel .tars if you prefer.
Also keep in mind that there are possible effects on things like the ability to customize boot animations or their could be reliance on certain kernels for ROM integrated scripts. Best to ask about successful kernels in your ROM thread.
I agree that the stock kernel is the best i was getting LOS and now I am now. I am rooted using the rom only root. Waiting until there is a root that will remove the triangle concept all in one.
i been getting nailed with LoS at least 4 to 8 times a day. i just reboot the phone, its really fast at booting back up. only wait like 20-30 seconds from the point i hit reboot. after reboot i get signal back i am on stock.

The problem I have whenever I get LoS.... it's usually ghost, and I don't notice it for quite some time. Making it so I miss calls and whatnot

I'm confused

I'm new to the E4GT, but not to rooting.
It was quite easy to do, following the steps and what not. What's confusing to me is this.
I'm running BlazeROM, which instructs not to use the Hitman recovery to flash, yet I was running rogue recovery which I think is the same thing?
So then, being brave I've flashed the ClockworkMOD recovery, no issues. Then for sharts and googles I flashed the touch version of CWM to see if that broke anything.
So far so good. Which recovery should I be running? Does it matter? and what's a "modem" in this phone's context? Is it like a Radio for the other phones?
Thanks for any schooling anyone can provide.
well first off a modem is the radio. no one radio is best. just try them all out to see if one performs better for you. you can mix and match radio's and roms no pro lem.second I prefer not using hitman. it doesn't seem to wipe well and is a little buggy. you can use it with blazer. you just cannot flash blazer with it. I use rogue gunslinger myself. definitely better in my opinion. also I choose not to use blazer. I use ruljelus 1.2. my modem that seems to work best is el 29. the order of te modems are as follows. eg12-eg30-eg31-ek02-el13-el26-el29. so el29 is th newest. anymore questions and I'd be happy to help
There's a difference between Rogue recovery and Rogue Hitman. Hitman includes the touch recovery. Blazer works with it but you can't flash a new version ofBlazer if you have it or else you'll be stuck at the boot screen. I personally use Gunslinger (version before Hitman) over the stock because it let's me undervolt

rogue is the team name of the people who put out kernels...gunslinger and hitman are the names given to the kernel

[Q] Custom ROMs: They slow down my phone? O_o"

Hey guys, and ladies, I'm a little stupefied at the moment due to the fact that every custom ROM I've used, Blazer3.9-4.1, CalkulinEL29, and FD19-24 ICS leak has actually made my e4gt run a little slower and less "smooth" during scrolling and animations. I know that these numbers don't ACTUALLY matter but also my Quadrant and Antutu benchmarks always drop when I'm not on stock, even if I'm overclocking, the only exception was FD19 which boosted Antutu to 6400+.
For example, Blazer 4.1, which I love, is benched at 2400-2800 on Antutu VS stock of 3500-3700; Calkulin EL29 got 3100-3300 on Antutu VS stock of 3500-3700. Is it just me or are these benchmarks just a complete hoax?
Whatever the case is I'm just looking for the fastest and most "stable" ROM available, like everyone else, so If you have a link to something where everything works, including 4G, I'd appreciate it very much.
I'm still fresh to this site so I'm having difficulty finding anything even with the great search menu, which I can't figure out how to use. lol.
IMO, the Unnamed rom was the best gingerbread rom ever released for this phone! AWSOME battery life, smokin fast, and everything works, including 4g .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386280&page=101
I would also reccomend using the desperado kernel for overclock of up to 1.7ghz! You can also underclock lower speeds for superb battery life. I don't have the link, but you can just search google and it should come up!
Thank you! ^^

That's what I'm talking about! ^^ Some good info for once on this forum, usually I get "noob" or "gtfo" like they were NEVER like me once upon a time.
I'm definitely going to look for that desperado kernel for sure because I'm NUTS about benchmarks..haha..
I've seen some dudes running 2.0Mhz or Ghz which ever is the right speed, like I care lol, and that doesn't even seem possible for a smartphone. I want that guys kernel or ROM or whatever!
So your phone is slow and lagging? If so that's not normal. I've never had a custom rom cause any real slow down or lagging.
Benchmarks are not very accurate most of the time, and especially on gingerbread where the hardware isn't properly utilized. All that matters is the real world performance.
Out of curiosity why are you worried about getting good bench scores? I would give AOKP based roms a try

I answered your question about the benchmarks in the post title. ^^
...and what I mean about "maintaining" is to keep it good or make it better.
I've been interested in the AOKP roms but I have no clue where to find them or what they would look like. Link?
You're working to maintain a placebo. Benchmarks mean virtually nothing. I've had Roms fly that you could only get low scores from. I've had ones that scored well but lagged and acted glitchy. Find a Rom that suits you when you use it. You can look to odex it to get an even smoother feel. Not sure what else to tell you.

Wow lol. You already answered your own question then.
The roms are right here in the development forum.
By the way you shouldn't be over clocking your phone if you don't understand the difference between megahertz and gigahertz or what that frequency means.
You should try reading the wiki or you're going to end up killing your nice $600 phone

El26 kernel will boot the el29 rom you only need el26 kernel for stock cwm you don't need the entire rom I mOdin el26 restore a base el29 rom with the bootimg removed update prl and profile boot back to el26+cwm and then flash aokp atleast once a day I do it that way cuz its what I have on my SD card and its quick and easy when I'm out and about and I only need to mOdin my kernel/recovery once. I used to flash an el29 rom and mOdin back to el26 but that requires reinstalling tibu to restore mOdin on el29 or else I have to redownload the flash kernel everytime which takes up time and wastes battery

Ya kernels make a HUGE difference. I thought I hated Phantom Hackers blazer ROM because I was using gunslinger and it was SOOO laggy. Tried el26 and now it Flies! Battery life is not as good as gunslinger but I cant have my phone at all laggy! O ya Blazer ROM is Amazing by the way. If you haven't I would suggest checking it out. Also for speed and stability I would check out StrongSteves Odexed blue as well. Best Gingerbread roms out bar none!

Not saying your way doesn't work because I do the same thing, but Odining a new EL26 has a less chance of brick. I don't see how or why you are disputing that.
Another possible slowdown could be an app or apps. Its a pain to find which one it is. This has happened to me on many phones. If I don't use an app in a week, then its just taking up space. I used to do it where if I didn't use the app everyday, I'd uninstall it. I also go into /system/app and ".old" apks I don't need so they aren't running. If I find I knocked one out that another app relied on, I simply remove the .old and reboot. There's a lot of crap bloat on the phone.

I've never heard of anyone bricking off of using el29 rom with el26+cwm kernel. If there was an el29+cwm kernel it would be safe to use. I rarely even flash a rom unless I need to update prl and profile I simply mOdin el26+cwm and flash away. The only reason ppl brick is from using either an ics kernel with recovery, flashing a temp recovery over and ics kernel via rom manager, or in very few cases using a GB kernel with a rogue repack, and that's only because the recovery has been modified from it's original cwm roots. Show me a post where someone bricked by flashing off of el26+cwm kernel with either another release GB rom or an ICS rom over the el26 kernel and I'll agree with you. If you read all the OPs for flashing an ICS rom, particularly an AOSP variant they all say to just Odin the kernel and mention nothing about the rom, considering you don't boot to the rom 90% of the time to flash and the rom had absolutely nothing to do with recovery it isn't required, once you wipe the rom is gone anyways so why flash something to erase it anyways?

Welcome to our street on XDA! Glad to see you have an Epic touch! I personally enjoy Cyanogen Mod Alpha 6, but it does have a few bugs. The one that annoys me the most being that cusotm ringtones are not supported yet. (The gf doesn't like not having her custom ringtone when she calls me ) But overall it is highly customizable and a great rom! I also like Blu Kuban (yes I did spell that right, Blu Kuban) but it is a little too Blue for my personal liking, but other than that I hear great things about it. I too recommend that you thoroughly read "The Official how I hard bricked my E4GT thread" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1509795 as well as the "How Not To Brick Your E4GT (UPDATED 5/21/12)" thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525495
From what I understand, the main things bricking Epic Touches right now is not being careful when flashing kernels. Currently, I believe that the recommended standard is when you wish to upgrade to a new rom, you first flash this in odin and then update: http://chris41g.devphone.org/EpicTouch/Stock Repack/EL26/StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5
This is a Gingerbread Kernel, and most people seem to recommend it when upgrading to ICS. In other words, Say one was on a stock FF18 root, one would open odin, flash this, then in the Clockwork recovery provided (the way people usually upgrade Modems, Roms, etc...) flash their new ICS Rom.
To Root, I might take a look at this, but I personally have not tried it, and don't know if it works or not. :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229
I believe in order to do that, in theory one would do the following:
Download that
Flash it in Odin
Done
If one wanted to go to Stock FF18 to Cyanogen Mod, I believe one would do the following:
Download and flash that rooted FF18 above,
Flash that EL26 CWM file I linked to earlier
Flash the Cyanogen Mod Alpha 6 http://e4gtcm.blogspot.com/p/cm9-status.html
Before you go ahead with any of this though, I would confirm that this is working with others, as I personally have not ever tried to start out on a non-rooted ICS Rom.
Also, whats called an emmc bug is currently going around, that hard-bricks devices in theory. Do be careful of this. It seems to be contagious through recoveries and kernels. I would read up more on this, as I myself am not fully educated upon the matter.
Also, please note that I do not take credit for any Kernels or Roms mentioned in this post, and that I in no way helped develop them. I also take no credit in discovering the emmc bug, I simply read about it, and have bricked one of my devices by getting the bug.
If you have any questions, let us know!
thanks to everyone..appreciate the input!!!:good:
edit: rooted now just need to find a stable kick butt rom.
 for being rooted.. I'd recommend the blu Kuban as well.. Great rom with kick ass support ... Plus love the rom updater . A daily driver for me... Just throwing that out there

I'm also a relative noob, at least to Samsung devices. I am on stock rooted EG30 right now (no CWM). Say I wanted to flash Blu Kuban. From what I gather, I would Odin the EL29 kernel+CWM recovery only using the PDA option in Odin (not the full ROM), then boot into the recovery just Odin'ed, wipe data/factory reset (or use the Format All x2 script), then flash the Blu Kuban as instructed in the Blu Kuban thread. Correct? I don't have to wipe internal or external sd card either, right?
Also, once I do that, if I wanted to flash a different kernel, like agat FF18 built from source, how would I do that? Would I just use CWM to flash, or would I have to Odin?

Thinking about flashing a jellybean rom- Epic 4G Touch noob

Just got an Epic 4g Touch a few weeks ago. I've been using custom roms for years by just searching through forums. I've been trying to search through all these threads but it's very confusing.
When I bought my Epic 4g Touch it already had ICS on it. I managed to root it and put a safe version of CWM on it. Now I want to try a Jellybean rom but I'm not sure if it's safe or what I need to do to make sure I don't brick my phone. Can I just flash with CWM? I saw something about having to downgrade to Gingerbread before I flash since I'm on ICS. Do I need to downgrade?
Thanks for any help. Please believe me when I say I've read through and searched but there's a lot of info out there and I just want to be sure so I don't brick my phone.

Some ics kernels like agat's from source and kuban kernel are safe. But I always flash EL26 Kernel + cwm to flash any new rom. You don't have to completely downgrade as in flash the whole GB rom. You just need to flash the safe gb kernel with cwm. I use mobile odin to flash the kernel. Mobile odin is available on play store and somewhere on xda too.
Also man before you flash turn on your gps. Leave it on. I check all 3 boxes. Make sure you got a lock with google maps. Leave it on when you turn your phone off to go into recovery. This helps you be able to get a lock in gps with your new rom

I updated to ICS a few weeks ago and have been searching for a root method. All of the methods and instructions I've found are either for a different model or relating to gingerbread. Could you point me in the right direction? thanks.

I personally never had any problems by flashing back to EL29 on Odin and then installing cmw

when I Odin back to EL26 and flash a new rom the baseband stays at EL26. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Does that even matter? I haven't been able to find anything regarding baseband versions.

The baseband is what we (on xda) refer to as the modem. It doesn't necessarily effect the rom, but some people have found that by trying different modems, phone signal can be increased, sometimes by an adequately noticeable amount. When you use odin to flash EL26, it also flashes the modem to EL26 and when you flash a new rom, the modem stays at EL26 because the rom and modem are completely separate from one another. You can however download different modems to be installed either through odin or cwm here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764210

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I've had the phone rooted since May running only GB roms. I was holding out for the ICS update, only to be disappointed. So I finally started flashing like back in my EVO days. I'm no Dev nor a noob, only by post counts i guess, but I must admit it's a bit confusing. Luckily we have a great community here to help sort all that stuff out.
