[Q] Probably already been brought up but.... - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, what I'm dealing with is an Xperia Play on 2.3.2 that has been flashed to the Cricket network. Now because of that, I can't get the official 2.3.3 update from Verizon. I noticed that Doomlords 1 click root doesn't work on this version of the play. I was wondering if there is ANY way to manually download the update to 2.3.3 without having to root? If I do need to root, what is the best method for my phone and what will I need to do to get it to 2.3.3?
Thanks in advanced for the help and the flames

What model is your phone? R800x, R800a...?
You should be able to just flash new firmware without root with "flashtool" because that's what I did with my R800i when I bought it. You just need to find the right firmware for your phone model (look in the development forum).
It's 2.3.4 that you want. Much better than 2.3.3.

Just sent you a pm regarding root

Yeah sorry, I should have been more informative on my phone. It is the 800x from Verizon but was never activated on the network. I bought it brand new and had it flashed to Cricket right then and there.
And thank you Pax for the PM, I will get to it tomorrow, just got off work and very tired lol.
(Also, thank you Danne =)

If you want 2.3.3, your kinda out on the cold, unfortunately there isn't a working copy of it available for a non-verizon/non-bootloader unlocked r800x... I can help you with root, but that's it...
Sent from my R800x using XDA App

Well, as far as I know it still has the Verizon firmware on it since it still tries to connect to the verizon app store all the time. If all I need to do to get 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 is unlock the bootloader and root, I think I can do that with the normal 800x way unless there is an update to all of that to make it simpler.

Just be careful with what you try and read, alot...

Thank. Currently I'm looking at the guide that Bin4ry put up on rooting and unlocking the boot loader. Would that be the way to go?

Would it be possible to just flash it to 2.3.3 with flashtool without rooting?
(very sorry for all the noob questions. Only used to flashing the evo style phones and this seems like a whole new experience) I am currently trying to see if I can get the update from Verizon themselves but it's been sitting on the "checking for updates" screen for 30 min now. I know on Sprint, if you flash the phone to Cricket you can still get the Android update from their network, but it seems unlikely for Verizon. Essentially. what I want to do for now is just get the phone to 2.3.3 without rooting.

Verizon is a pain in the butt, if you do manage to get a download for it (not on your phone) please, find a way to upload it to mills in the dev section or anybody else working on a kernel for the R800x
---------- Post added at 03:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:21 PM ----------
I was wrong, wotanserver.com does not have the kernel, unfortunately they say they do, but the don't have it on their program

Should I even attempt flashtool? I have seen some posting where it will work, but others have said it doesn't recognize their phone.

OK good news. I was able to get it to 2.3.3 using SEUS. Saw that someone used it yesterday, and I can confirm that it is working. Took about 15 min total.

New OTA update is coming

I read an article on Droid-Life and there supposedly is an update coming for this phone. I am currently running rmk's Debloated/Rooted/De-odexed ROM. Am I going to even get a notification for the update? I don't want to accept the update but will it force me to install it?

I was thinking I could just use what I like about it and freeze what I don't want in it.
Or at least hide what I don't like.
I would rather hide or freeze what I don't use/want so it is easier to go back to stock (just in case).
This new radio may break root for people, luckily I used the xtc clip, but at the top now it says locked..

my hboot now rocks a pink ***LOCKED*** on the top. lol
I am rooted running the stock ROM. Will I lose Root if I accept this update? I am Rooted with Revolutionary.
Yeah. I'm just gonna wait and see what happens throughout the week.
I have it deferred until Saturday.
Maybe something will come about.
The OTA will only appear to phones running stock or a rom based on stock framework, right?
it should ontophantoms.....at least thats the way i understood it from the guys at verizon......i haven't had the OTA popup yet for me, so im happy haha
Thanks, that's what I'm hoping too.
A friend of mine has a DInc2 and he was running completely stock, unrooted. Took the 2.3.4 OTA and now he's got the "Locked-Security Warning" message.

this patch must break the gb root we just got so now refurbs that come w the new update will not b able to root w/o xtc clip... here we go again
Do yourselves a favor and freeze the com.smithmicro.dm application so it can't update ota, and then just wait for the rooted releases.

If people are worried about getting the ota and losing root...with root explorer in rw(read write) go to etc/security then find the file called otacerts.zip. Rename it otacerts.bak. Prolly not needed cuz we have cwr but i do it anyways just in case.

[Q] sony noob. feel stupid...

ok guys i just picked up a play for att. sucks cause i have tmobile and wont get the 3/4g data. im almost always in wifi spots anyway so no big deal.
anyway i have already called att and got the phone sim unlocked. now if i think i understand this correctly this should be the order to follow. if you guys can confirm and provide latest links i would appreciate greatly.
1. sim unlock (done)
2. unlock bootloader (not yet)
3. root (not yet)
4. load rom (not yet)
correct??? did i miss anything? any preferred method on any of these? please advise.
thanks!!!
First of all, if you bought a xperia PLAY, you should probably post in the xperia PLAY forums.
Second of all, questions go in the Q & A forum.
To answer your question, that's pretty much the right order.

For img flash you can use flashtool.
You don't need root or anything to use flashtool on your phone.
Just pick correct .ftf for your phone and flash it to the phone.

If you were rooted before you don't need to re-root unless you purposely unrooted it. IF you aren't rooted anymore superoneclick or the zergrush(however it's spelled) is the easiest. I'm 99% sure you don't have an unlocked bootloader though, so you have very few options. I'd say re-root if you need to and unlock your bootloader so you can flash flash and flash custom roms like crazy

You need to pay Setool credits in order to unlock the bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to lose the sin lock as well, so you could have killed two birds with the same stone.

ya i just found the website. seems like thats the one everyone is sent to on this site.
im wondering now that im rooted if i can clean this stock rom up enough to use on a daily basis. i mean im using tmobile on the device so sharing internet would only be edge lol. i guess the only thing i really want ics for is that fact that its ics.
open the dial pad and use this code*#*#7378423#*#* . Then go to -> "Service Info" -> "Configuration".
If it says unlock bootloader = no, then you have to use the paid service, if yes, then you can do it for free yourself.

After a few frustrating days of searching I found this website http://www.unlockroot.com/index.htm which I just ran and it worked great! I am now a proud owner of a rooted SE XPlay. This program only took about 5 minutes to root my phone and give me superuser (still not sure what that is).
At any rate, you download the program, install it, follow the directions and then run it. It's that simple.

Easiest way to root your phone running ANY firmware is to unlock your bootloader and flash Superuser in CWM and your all set.

I used the program that I linked to above which was a simple as installing the program, running it, connecting my phone, clicking the ROOT button and within a few seconds my phone rebooted and was rooted with superuser installed. I think the issue, specifically, is that the guide doesn't really specify to use the ION rom files. Most people that don't know anything about Android wouldn't know any better. But then again, one might argue that if this is the case that root isn't for them.
I won't redo the guide, as it's already there. But if I can get my roomy to let me use his phone for recording purposes, I may make a video. Someone...anyone?? Anyone else care to take part in this too? With helping I mean?

I just put this on another thread, but I'll put it here as well, as it might be useful for another noob like me. Last weekend flashed ICS on my Xperia, following the procedure for rooting. It took me maybe two hours to get all the instructions and download everything I needed. Besides the firmwares, Root Toolkit, Android SDK, for which the links are in the instructions, I also needed Flashtool for Windows, the latest version from http://androxyde.github.com/Flashtool/, which has the drivers for Ion. When installing the drivers from Flashtool\drivers, the Ion wasn't in the list, so I just installed all the options available. I followed everything from the instructions, but wasn't getting the same response from the ADB commands, it still worked.
I would add two things to the instructions:
1. First flash the international GB firmware, wiping everything in the device, to get hotspot.
2. Right after flashing ICS, Flashtool won't recognize the phone, even if the USB debugging option is on. You'll have to update your PC drivers by going to Control Panel, Device Manager, and choose to have Windows search for updated drivers (while the phone is connected, of course). You´ll know you got it right when Device Manager displays a different name for your phone, and Flashtool is able to tell you the software version. At that point you can run the second part of the rooting procedure.
Now a question for people that have flashed the ICS firmware. Is there a way to put the slide to vibrate option back in the lock screen? I liked that from the At&t rom, don't know why the Chinese one has a slide to camera, if there is a hardware button for the camera that works with a locked phone.

what error messages are you getting?
Also, make sure you have usb debugging enabled and have it set to pc software. If you get failures change permissions or to push files to your phone you should reboot the phone. Other than that, just keep attempting. First time I rooted it took the first time... ,2nd time I was almost ready to give up when I saw 'zerg rush successful'

what program should I be using to root I listed 3?
Then I can list the messages
what mattman says is correct, V20c is the latest and requires the unbrick method, but v10j can be easily rooted.. just have to put up with a little frustration here and there.
I have no preference on what program used to root, but what little experience I have is with super one click, so.... that one.

sounds good can you provide a link to the guide and I will get started right away (I think i know the one but better not to brink my phone)
the unbrick method is sticky'd here. It looks daunting but it's really quite simple. Just read through it once or twice, get a feel of what to do, and be sure to pay attention to any problems that others have encountered and you should be good to go.
Also, just to clarify; if you do, in fact, have v10j you don't need to unbrick. The ota update wasn't v20c if I'm not mistaken.

Funny thing is I had the troubles rooting the Korean kdz following the unbrick. Prior to upgrading to ics official, my stock gb Rom rooted first time. That's why I say to just keep trying because that's what I did and it finally worked after about an hour of steadily clicking "root"after each failure.

maybe try a different version of super one click, I used 2.3.3 I believe it was.. or just keep trying that. It will take eventually.

I can't say I have a lot of experience rooting this device (I've only ever done it once), but I did have a few failures before I was able to succeed, so I'll at least give you an idea of what worked for me. Granted, this was on v10f firmware but it may be the same.
What worked for me was using doomlord after rebooting the phone. Supposedly the lag that the phone goes through right after it boots increases your success rate. So basically what I did was reboot the device with the USB cable connected, immediately swipe to unlock the phone at the moment when the lock screen first became visible, then immediately start doomlord before the phone has a chance to settle down and stop lagging.
Hope that works for you.

same thing just hangs up what else should I do
Also, don't use "shell root" if you're using SuperOneClick. Do a regular root.
the main thing now is just to keep trying. Try a manual reboot here and there maybe. If it doesn't work this time, try it again. If that doesn't work, do it again. If that fails, try again, etc, etc, etc, etc.
Or, try drumist's suggestion. I've read a few success stories with that method as well.

Rooting LG Nitro
Has anyone had luck rooting after the last update? What I've got:
Model Number: LG-P930
Android Version: 2.3.5
Baseband Version: P930-MDM9200B-V10j-FEB-26-2012-XX 1
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.11
Build Number: GRJ90
Software Version: LG-P930-V10j-FEB26-2012
If so, please post which method or a link to what worked. Went through this thread, but haven't seen anything.
THANKS

You can't root that version. If you want to get root, you'll need to use unbricking method to install a ROM that can be rooted (like the russian one), root it, then flash back to a ROM you want to use.
You'll notice I'm the one who posted that, and it was quite a while ago. In reality, it can be rooted but I believe it is more difficult. Good luck in any case.

I assumed you had read the threads related to v10j rooting and based my assumptions upon that. I didn't really have the time to go reading/linking threads back to this one last night anyway, but today is a different story. From: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740467 Pretty clear that particular version can't be rooted, and that conclusion took a whole 10 seconds to find using the search function. Follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597488 and you'll be rooted and flashing new roms like you stole 'em in no time.
