I'll write up a guide tonight...Step by step, and include all the files needed as well. But... I'll drop all the info to gainshbiyer, to update their thread already in the Dev section. Now granted....This is unless someone beats me to it first. I'll have this tutorial in their PM box within 24 hours.

There is already a guide in the Development section on how to load ICS and to root.
ATT and other Locked Bootloader Phones:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29713958&postcount=2
The only thing it is missing is what drivers to load really.

That's the method I followed. I'm not new to android by any means, but I did have to ask questions about that one. I think what this person wants is a setup package. Step by step, click by click, so there is an extremely low chance of fault. Ill leave it alone for right now then, tho. I don't wanna overstep my bounds.

I'm with you, the existing guide, I think, is for an intermediate understanding of android. Click by click would be good for the SXI. I also had to ask some questions. Some things are taken for granted in the current write up.
I started to write a guide from my experience but never finished it.

If someone could demonstrate a YouTube video that would be fantastic. I had an x10 before and that's how I was able to customize. If it wasn't for the video. I probably wouldn't have an android. It's too complicated for me. Thanks guys.

I think the issue, specifically, is that the guide doesn't really specify to use the ION rom files. Most people that don't know anything about Android wouldn't know any better. But then again, one might argue that if this is the case that root isn't for them.
I won't redo the guide, as it's already there. But if I can get my roomy to let me use his phone for recording purposes, I may make a video. Someone...anyone?? Anyone else care to take part in this too? With helping I mean?

Bluechipj had videos on YouTube on how to root Sony Ericsson devices. Ask him he's very knowledgeable about that too.

I just put this on another thread, but I'll put it here as well, as it might be useful for another noob like me. Last weekend flashed ICS on my Xperia, following the procedure for rooting. It took me maybe two hours to get all the instructions and download everything I needed. Besides the firmwares, Root Toolkit, Android SDK, for which the links are in the instructions, I also needed Flashtool for Windows, the latest version from http://androxyde.github.com/Flashtool/, which has the drivers for Ion. When installing the drivers from Flashtool\drivers, the Ion wasn't in the list, so I just installed all the options available. I followed everything from the instructions, but wasn't getting the same response from the ADB commands, it still worked.
I would add two things to the instructions:
1. First flash the international GB firmware, wiping everything in the device, to get hotspot.
2. Right after flashing ICS, Flashtool won't recognize the phone, even if the USB debugging option is on. You'll have to update your PC drivers by going to Control Panel, Device Manager, and choose to have Windows search for updated drivers (while the phone is connected, of course). You´ll know you got it right when Device Manager displays a different name for your phone, and Flashtool is able to tell you the software version. At that point you can run the second part of the rooting procedure.
Now a question for people that have flashed the ICS firmware. Is there a way to put the slide to vibrate option back in the lock screen? I liked that from the At&t rom, don't know why the Chinese one has a slide to camera, if there is a hardware button for the camera that works with a locked phone.

Root with locked bootloader - anyone tried?

So over on the Xperia S forums they have this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742992 which is a guide to root the Xperia S with a locked bootloader. Has anyone tried those steps with the ion and a locked bootloader?
I will test this out in a week (after my week of use testing the international firmware on my at&t ion) if no one else has yet. Thought it might be interesting to see if it works for us too.
Im out n away from my comp through the weekend spec but I will cerainly help sort through and test soon as I can. eb

I want to test this out but don't want to brick my phone. What do you think the chances of bricking would be? I'm assuming we would have to use the international firmware since we don't yet have the at&t file, right?
Does anybody know if restore via pc connect is possible for ion? Should be, I just havent yet had a chance to connect. eb

By just flashing a ftf no not really. Just make sure you have enough battery life and you should be good.
I tried it with my ion the other day, but there was something like a partation size error.
Tried today using just the at&t GB ftf but it wouldn't work on step two. Said permission denied. Might need the ICS firmware like how the guide says for the Xperia S. The ics ftf posted in the ion boards gives me (and it seems others with locked bootloaders) sin verification errors.
Damn.

So I found this site, http://bbs.gfan.com/android-4269369-1-1.html
According to it some people have successfully rooted the AT&T Ion somehow
You'll need something like Chrome to translate it.
It didnt work for me, said something about the ADB Shell
Any other info about that other than running that exe?
Nope, it just gives you an interface that says ROOT or UNROOT. This is the website for the program http://www.unlockroot.com/
You would see ways to root here on XDA before seeing it in a program like that I would imagine.
That program doesn't list the LT28 on its supported list either. Doesn't work with the LT26i either though it says it does.
I hope someone finds a method, I'm also hoping that we see some development on the ion.
Ahh my bad guys :/ My computer is far too slow to use to backup all my internal SD files, if it wasn't I wouldn't have wasted your time with that.

Well once we get a FTF we can use of ICS we can try using the same method that was used on the Xperia S to get root with a locked bootloader. But it needs ICS to do the exploit.

Probably a stupid question but, what would it take to make an FTF? I mean like people are always making .zips of ROMs that can be flashed via recovery. Would it be any different besides for the method of getting it on the device?

Well we have to get the files from SUS or PC companion of an official release to make into an FTF. Right now ICS isn't being pushed out anywhere so we are stuck waiting.

Removing preinstalled apps on Xperia play

Hi,
I am been researching for few weeks now. Being just an android user and a beginner level android developer, I am kind of lost in trying to solve my issue. I bought a Xperia Play. It is carrier unlocked. The main issue is the internal memory which keeps getting filled up from time to time, that makes me sacrifice some less used but important apps. I would like to make use of my phone more efficiently and utilise it to its maximum potential. Request someone to help me achieve this by helping me remove these apps.
Thanks
you have to root your phone first and u will find a tutorial im the development section... And after that you can use titanium backup to remove those apps
Hi,
Thanks for the info. But I am kind of lost when I went through the forum. Can you please guide me a specific one? Thanks.

You could unlock your bootloader. You can do this here: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
This enables you to flash custom Kernels and Roms. Although you don't need this if you only want to root your phone, but in my experience custom roms and kernels are a great advantage if you want to get more out of your phone
The rooting thread would be this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1325334

Thanks Bombasti, but the unlock boot loader from sony mobile does not work for phones with IMEI numbers greater than 14 digits. Further, I also tried SuperOneClick but I keep getting the errors in Step 1 stating that the "rm failed for /data/local/tmp/boomsh. No such file directory", Step 2 also returns similar result. Can you help. Thanks.

This is not correct. You just have to enter the 14 first digits. So it should work for your phone unless there are other restrictions (e.g. from your phone provider).
Did you try it with the first 14 digits?
Also did you run SuperOneClick as administrator? I have no idea how SupoerOneClick works, but the error says that it can't remove a directory that doesn't exist. Maybe you can create the dir on your phone to fool the program?
Greetings,
Bombasti
-----------------------EDIT:---------------------
I checked the SuperOneClick thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682/
The R800i isn't listed as compatible device, what doesn't mean it's not compatible since the list is incomplete. But I remember that it didn't work for my phone either ( I tried it some time ago). I solved the problem through flashing an already rooted rom. Later i user Cyanogenmod which rooted from the beginning. But this needs an unlocked bootloader first...

First, V20c is the latest....
I believe the only sure way is to unbrick and flash a prerooted stock ROM.
what error messages are you getting?
Also, make sure you have usb debugging enabled and have it set to pc software. If you get failures change permissions or to push files to your phone you should reboot the phone. Other than that, just keep attempting. First time I rooted it took the first time... ,2nd time I was almost ready to give up when I saw 'zerg rush successful'

sounds good can you provide a link to the guide and I will get started right away (I think i know the one but better not to brink my phone)
the unbrick method is sticky'd here. It looks daunting but it's really quite simple. Just read through it once or twice, get a feel of what to do, and be sure to pay attention to any problems that others have encountered and you should be good to go.
Also, just to clarify; if you do, in fact, have v10j you don't need to unbrick. The ota update wasn't v20c if I'm not mistaken.

Funny thing is I had the troubles rooting the Korean kdz following the unbrick. Prior to upgrading to ics official, my stock gb Rom rooted first time. That's why I say to just keep trying because that's what I did and it finally worked after about an hour of steadily clicking "root"after each failure.

I can't say I have a lot of experience rooting this device (I've only ever done it once), but I did have a few failures before I was able to succeed, so I'll at least give you an idea of what worked for me. Granted, this was on v10f firmware but it may be the same.
What worked for me was using doomlord after rebooting the phone. Supposedly the lag that the phone goes through right after it boots increases your success rate. So basically what I did was reboot the device with the USB cable connected, immediately swipe to unlock the phone at the moment when the lock screen first became visible, then immediately start doomlord before the phone has a chance to settle down and stop lagging.
Hope that works for you.

same thing just hangs up what else should I do
Also, don't use "shell root" if you're using SuperOneClick. Do a regular root.
the main thing now is just to keep trying. Try a manual reboot here and there maybe. If it doesn't work this time, try it again. If that doesn't work, do it again. If that fails, try again, etc, etc, etc, etc.
Or, try drumist's suggestion. I've read a few success stories with that method as well.

You can't root that version. If you want to get root, you'll need to use unbricking method to install a ROM that can be rooted (like the russian one), root it, then flash back to a ROM you want to use.
You'll notice I'm the one who posted that, and it was quite a while ago. In reality, it can be rooted but I believe it is more difficult. Good luck in any case.

I assumed you had read the threads related to v10j rooting and based my assumptions upon that. I didn't really have the time to go reading/linking threads back to this one last night anyway, but today is a different story. From: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740467 Pretty clear that particular version can't be rooted, and that conclusion took a whole 10 seconds to find using the search function. Follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597488 and you'll be rooted and flashing new roms like you stole 'em in no time.

For the desperate LG Escape owners...

Not sure where to post a victory message! After scouring the net over my truly new LG Escape P870, actually newly released to the world in mid-September, for rooting information, I somehow landed on Bin4ry's thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460.
I am extremely happy to say that version 15 did the job! I wanted to post this in his thread, but I'm not allowed to because I'm new.
So for anybody enjoying using this great phone, there's hope. And it's EASY!
Peace, tinkicker.
I tried Bin4ry's as well but it did''t work for me. It kept giving me errors (i tried it like 10 times). I tried both methods (for tabs and the normal) I wanted to post on Bin4ry's and give him the output that I got but I couldnt post on that thread (new user) . Then I found a site, which I am not able to post the link to because xda doesn't let me( new user), but if you google "LG Esteem OneClickRoot" it is the first result that comes up. I tried that one, it also gave me errors and restarted my phone, I thought It didnt work but when I went and looked in the installed apps, for my surprise there was a new app - "superSU". So I opened a terminal typed su and there it was the coveted # sign . Now I need to find how to install a new recovery.
Hey guys, just got this phone today. Tried both of those methods with no luck so I figured why not try the method that worked on the recently ported ICS 4.0.4 for the LG Thrill.
You can find it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31963526&postcount=532
The version 1.6 worked for me. The only problem I had was there was an error reading a file, second time through it worked with 0 errors.
Also there is an update to our firmware from P87010c to P87010f not sure what the difference is.
NO JOY!!!
Okay...I'm stupid. Rooted phone...one wrong move with a system file...yep. Brick.
Fortunately I was 1 day shy of my hardware warranty expiration so new phone. But...now Bin4ry's app no longer works for me! It will NOT root this new Escape!
Tomorrow I'll try MikesTooLz's and see what happens.
Look at your system info, did you get the newer software version? The v10f or P87010f is the update, the one on my phone that I rooted with wkparks method is v10c or P87010c.
If it's the updated version can't say for sure but the link I posted above worked on 2 LG phones that I have, may work on yours.
I suspected the software update--it's the F version--might be the culprit but I didn't know what the original was so I couldn't be sure.
So what can I do? Wait on someone to cover the F update? Could I download the older version, root, and then upgrade again?
Did you try the method posted in the link I provided? You may have to run it 2 times to get it to work. Also some have reported better results with version 1.2 of the root script vs 1.6
What exactly is going wrong? Can you give me a screenshot of the cmd prompt? I will do what I can to help, I have the update ready to go but haven't done it because I want to make sure I have root. haha
Downgrading isn't really possible because the only KDZ I can find is the v10f which I posted in a thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33752762
I'm slowly working on this phone so hopefully we can get a custom recovery going and everything no promises though but, I won't be happy till I can put a custom rom on this phone.
Urabewe, it worked!
I could NOT download v1.6. It would appear to download, virus scan would run, and browser would lock up. When I checked my "extract to" folder, the bin and files folders were there, but none of the .bat files had extracted. I was able to correctly download and extract v1.2, so I ran it, and my phone is now rooted. Thank you for the info!
It ran the first time and failed. Ran the second like you said I might have to, and it completed correctly.
I have the update ready to go but haven't done it because I want to make sure I have root. haha

Does that mean you were waiting to root your phone to see if I bricked mine? LOL!
Now...everybody talks about "install a new recovery". Can somebody point me to or describe the correct procedure/routine/script that I need to follow in order to set my phone up safely like it should be? What apps do I need to fulfill all the correct steps? Yes, I've messed around with a tablet root for a year, but I'm no developer. As far as the technicalities go, I'm pure NOOB. Windows, I understand. Linux, I'm learning. I don't know how to be safe about this and I can't afford to buy another phone if I screw up (wife is watching me closely).
Urabewe, thanks for the help!
Awesome glad it worked. No wasn't waiting for you to brick, just confirm root was possible, and this is nice to know I may just upgrade later then.
Recovery is not possible right now, bootloader is locked and only thing we can get into is download mode which has nothing to do with custom recoveries. Slowly working on it so anything I find will be posted.
Any info I find will be posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33752762 so keep an eye out there.

has anyone tried any of the one click methods? ive found 3/4 different ones out there.
One Clicks...
I tried two specifically meant for LG phones, and I had no luck with them. I succeeded with Urabewe's posted links though. And yes, as I posted in their thread, v10f IS rootable. Once I figure out how to take screencaps again, or better take live video of the screen, I will get it as more proof. Now to see if ROMs will be possible soon....
I can't rooting my terminal, other method easy?

[Q] R800a on Rogers, help getting fastboot working!

Hi all!
Okay so I'm ready to bash my face off something till I die... lol I've been up all night screwing with my xperia play from rogers. First I did the touchpoint method to unlock the bootloader and s1tool confirms that it's unlocked. However, no fastboot and when I punch in the code provided by SE to see the value of "bootloader unlock allowed"... it's still "no". From what I understand the touchpoint method shouldn't change this value. However because this value is still set, I have a feeling that this is why I can't enable fastboot.
I'm trying to flash a custom jellybean rom using flashtool and because of the aforementioned situation, I can't. I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to get fastboot working. I hate that I've paid through the nose for all the android devices I own and I yet I still don't technically own them. Anyway I won't rant....
P.S. Just to be verbose, when I do fastboot.exe devices... just hangs saying waiting for device. Device shows up in Device Manager but is code 31 cannot start. Also if I hold search and plug in USB or any of those combos I absolutely cannot get a blue light. I can also assure anyone that I've spent probably 8 hours straight googling the bleep out of this issue and working on it so I'm not being lazy I've just reached the limits of what I can do on my own and am begging for any help that is available!
Thanks in advance!
Also just more info, I've got the devices rooted if that makes anything simpler or opens up options. I'm also wondering if this might be a driver issue because I was doing this on my windows 8 machine and from 7 up you have to do a bunch of stupid temporary system configurations to allow unsigned drivers plus wondering if it's a driver incompatibility issue. If that's the case can I use flashtool on my linux machine? Something I'll look in to... just wanted to post as much info as I can. Thanks again!
So no one in this forum has any idea?
No one here has absolutely any idea about what I can or can't do with this bootloader situation? Wow....

Pardon my ignorance.... but you mean I can flash a custom kernel on my rogers r800a that will have fastboot? I'm asking basically because theres a working jellybean rom it but without fastboot I can't use flashtool to flash this custom rom. I'm a bit of a noob sorry and I ought not to be with what I do for a living. lol

When you do test point unlock you don't get fast boot you have to use flash mode and .ft kernel and whatnot go into flash tool and press boot loader unlock it should fail and say its already unlocked

Got it!
After much struggle.. I've got it all working and running slimbean. It's quite a huge pain in the rear to get set up so I'll post a complete guide on this thread afterward... especially considering that this thread comes up in top google search results for me when I look up "unlock bootloader R800a" and other such similar phrases.

Honestly this was almost a year ago and I ended up chucking that damn phone out and getting my wife a new one. I barely remember the whole process I just remember it being about 3-4 days of me being intensely angry and frustrated lol. I do recall it involved ripping apart the phone and shorting out certain pins that are covered by the sticker under the battery, but I believe that portion was for unlocking the sim, I really can't remember. I'll see if I can dust off those brain cells and get the whole thing back and post nfo if successful.

This I used as for part of the process:

However I don't believe this tutorial includes unlocking the bootloader. I believe sony provides a utility or something to unlock the bootloader but you're missing fastboot. I think the process involved flashing a custom kernel, not sure. I'll keep digging into my memory and post more nfo back later. Kernel was Lupus kernel I recall that much.
Edit:
Here is complete guide with bootloader unlock process explained as well.

More links http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com - but as I recall this doesn't work for rogers branded r800a.
