zergRush don't work if you updated your phone after 11/2011
If you updated your phone, you need to flash (with flashtool) a previous version of stock GB in order to root your phone

How do we know if our phone was updated after 11/2011? My phone is the same as the OP, R800i 2.3.4 but I don't remember when I updated to the 2.3.4 or would that be the bad update... lol

The version on About Phone (or run zergRush, if it doesn't work, the phone was updated)

If I just want to remove or move to SD card some of system apps like the Bruce Lee game, do I need to root or unlock the bootloader or both? I'm not looking for Custom ROMs just free up some memory.

Found a super easy way.

After a few frustrating days of searching I found this website http://www.unlockroot.com/index.htm which I just ran and it worked great! I am now a proud owner of a rooted SE XPlay. This program only took about 5 minutes to root my phone and give me superuser (still not sure what that is).
At any rate, you download the program, install it, follow the directions and then run it. It's that simple.
You can find some good info here on apps that you can remove. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046699

ok thanks, i may look into that
i just gave up with all the downgrading and rooting
i mainly wanted it to play games on it, but i have found almost all games i wanted for it now, exept for king of fighters, and the latest version of FPSE, both do require a rooted phone
but im happy with what i got already, still might look into rooting it for all the other perks though

Fpse does not require a rooted phone (unless Im reading what you mean wrong then disregard)
Easiest way to root your phone running ANY firmware is to unlock your bootloader and flash Superuser in CWM and your all set.

Well I tried unlocking the bootloader and not sure why but wasn't able to. I used the program that I linked to above which was a simple as installing the program, running it, connecting my phone, clicking the ROOT button and within a few seconds my phone rebooted and was rooted with superuser installed. After that I installed Titanium Backup Pro and went to town.
TOO EASY! :good:
Heck I rooted 4 phones with that program within about 10 minutes.

Questions, about root.

I've been playing with the thought root or not root, but i'll need to know this few things before taking the final decision.
If i root 2.3.3, will i then still be able to get 2.3.4 and or 4.0 when it comes out, if se will support 4.0.
what does the 4.0.a features have that the 3.0.1.a doesn't have? and what is the difference.
And how easy 10/10 is it to update a rooted phone.
Thats all, i wanna know.
Search is your friend, but anyways...
Unless you have an unlocked/unlockable bootloader, you cannot root v2.3.3 directly.
Rooting doesn't affect updates as long as you don't remove any system files/apps.
e.g. Updating a rooted Rogers phone:
New features: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199597
There's practically no risk since you can always restore the phone to stock using the FlashTool or PC Companion.
Okay, danke. Youve got your thanks up.

[Q] sony noob. feel stupid...

ok guys i just picked up a play for att. sucks cause i have tmobile and wont get the 3/4g data. im almost always in wifi spots anyway so no big deal.
anyway i have already called att and got the phone sim unlocked. now if i think i understand this correctly this should be the order to follow. if you guys can confirm and provide latest links i would appreciate greatly.
1. sim unlock (done)
2. unlock bootloader (not yet)
3. root (not yet)
4. load rom (not yet)
correct??? did i miss anything? any preferred method on any of these? please advise.
thanks!!!
First of all, if you bought a xperia PLAY, you should probably post in the xperia PLAY forums.
Second of all, questions go in the Q & A forum.
To answer your question, that's pretty much the right order.

For img flash you can use flashtool.
You don't need root or anything to use flashtool on your phone.
Just pick correct .ftf for your phone and flash it to the phone.

If you were rooted before you don't need to re-root unless you purposely unrooted it. IF you aren't rooted anymore superoneclick or the zergrush(however it's spelled) is the easiest. I'm 99% sure you don't have an unlocked bootloader though, so you have very few options. I'd say re-root if you need to and unlock your bootloader so you can flash flash and flash custom roms like crazy

1.Root your phone
2.Install Recovery
3.Unlock Bootloader

You need to pay Setool credits in order to unlock the bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to lose the sin lock as well, so you could have killed two birds with the same stone.

ya i just found the website. seems like thats the one everyone is sent to on this site.
im wondering now that im rooted if i can clean this stock rom up enough to use on a daily basis. i mean im using tmobile on the device so sharing internet would only be edge lol. i guess the only thing i really want ics for is that fact that its ics.
open the dial pad and use this code*#*#7378423#*#* . Then go to -> "Service Info" -> "Configuration".
If it says unlock bootloader = no, then you have to use the paid service, if yes, then you can do it for free yourself.

[Q] No Phone service 2.3.4 update

I am in Canada, I have a Verizon R800x Xperia Play that I bought on eBay just for using as an mp3 player, game player and camera. I would really love to have the 720p video function afforded by the 2.3.4 update.
I don't use this as a phone, there is no phone service on it.
When I try to update, it turns wi-fi off so I assume the only way to get the OTA update is to have phone service.
I have read through some forums about the nandroid backup and how if you don't have the proper kernel then the camera, wifi etc might not work which is obviously not ideal.
My question is this:
Is there any way I can get the official 2.3.4 update on my play without unlocking my bootloader?
Thanks in advance for any help.
I just realized the title of this thread might imply that I have no phone service after updating to 2.3.4. Sorry if there is any confusion.

The problem here is, you would need an unlocked bootloader in order to flash the kernel to get to 2.3.4. It only costs $24 though (I'm actually unlocking mine on Friday) so I would recommend taking that option, then flashing whatever kernel or rom you want.
Or you could wait until someone is able to make a 2.3.4 .ftf file for use with FlashTool. It will definitely take less time to unlock your bootloader, but waiting for the .ftf is free.
Ah, see I was not sure yet if someone had made an .ftf file yet. Thanks for the replies, I will just wait until the ftf is available for now.

Help - rooting latest firmware (Never rooted before)

As the title suggests
I've just bought an OUYA and I stupidly updated it to the latest firmware and now that I want to root the thing it appears from a significant amount of "googling" that this is not currently possible.
Can anyone confirm if im stuck or if this is still possible to do could someone please point me in the direction of a guide?
I've tried installing RootMyOuya.1.1.apk and it refuses to install
thanks
Find "towelroot-v2.apk" not v3 or later. still working! I tried today.

Ur the best man!! Will play around with this after ive finished installing xp on my laptop, you think it might work better?
I can't remember what site it was but last night I came across a post about people trying to root the ouya with newest firmware. It took a little time( install time) but it was pretty easy. First download and install the android SDK( it takes awhile but I couldn't find the ouya ABD interface drivers anywhere else) and then download and install kingo. It rooted my ouya no problem. And that you need the exposed installed. Don't get the latest version. The newest is ***********v32.zip I think. You want v29.zip and of course you'll need ps4ouya.zip as well. If you use the v32.zip the play store won't work. I think that should help a lot of people. I know this isn't the clearest explanation but I don't clams to be an expert lol

Hi mate,
what method did you use to root 5.1.1?
I spent hours last night clearing 5gb of space on c:\ so I could update my z1 to 5.1 using pc companion.
Finally got it updated and now I realise kingroot doesnt work on 5.1 yet.
Any pointers would be much appreciated,

One user in Kingroot thread says they rooted using an older version, (I think he said 4.1). I haven't looked into it more than that, but maybe worth a look. Besides that, probably a PRF is your only option with locked BL for now.
