I was passing time at GSM arena when i noticed the Defy+ in their phone list:
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3514&idPhone2=4098
They have really changed the processor?
And this battery of 1700 mA?? I want one of these...
Any new on this "new" phone?
Cheers!
Same processor just not underclocked like the defy is (if I remember correctly)... it's pretty much the same phone. Which sucks.

Cept for an improved GPU and a bigger battery it doesnt offer much over the Defy.

improved gpu? what are you talking about? it has the same powervr sgx530 chip, because its the same processor too... and the new battery fits in the defy, so theres really no sense upgrading from defy to defy+.

me too noticed this just today while searching for my first moto phone details...
a one to one comparison shows the cpu is 3610 vs 3620 in +
and the increased battery rating...
all in all same but not much os a + to get one to upgrade....
had it been a 1.2 / 1.5 Ghz with a 4" screen... thing would have been worth an upgrade... maybe...

And again, 3610 and 3620 are just market numbers, those models do not exist. All of them are 3630 but clocked at different speeds.
3630 - 800 Mhz
3630 - 1000 Mhz
3630 - 1200 Mhz
There is no difference on Instructions Sets, technology, or anything, all are ARMV7 with the only difference beign the Mhz
Want a Defy+? get the battery and Overclock your Defy to 1000 Mhz
I meant CPU. Autocorrect pawns me often! Its not an upgrade yet a good replacement for old users looking forward to stick with the Defy brand.
Still a sham for the least they could do was include a front camera not making Gingerbread pointless.

At first I was frustrated that they were releasing such an improvement from the Defy, but the difference isn't THAT much, just the OC and the battery. So I'm fine with my Defy. After all, we can still do stuff with this right?

So it wold be allrigth to our defy to run at 1200? Its processor was made for that? Or we maybe would have some heat issue?
Found the 1700mAh battery for sale at Mugen power... Kind of expensive. I'm flearting with it now.
Just to be clear, i never even considered an "Upgrade" for the Defy+. I just want my phone to be as fast and the battery last as much as it could!!
Thanks a lot for all replies!
Can't say if the chip was tailormade for that frequency as it does heat up a bit after a while but yes its still safe.

Yep what ryan8r said, I dont know if it was made to run a 800 or 1200.
I do run mine at 1100 since I bought it (couple months ago) at vSel 54 and it doesnt heat up, works wonders.

I ve got that battery and I have to say that on any froyo and any custom roms 2.2 the improvement was really visible, however, currently im on MotoGinger and I only get 2 days of battery and that s a maximum. its probably my fault because recently I cant be arsed playing with a phone
any other "rugged phone" suggestions? currently im still using the galaxy spica on my mtb rides mainly for its gps function... with this i can still take pictures even when its raining....

Refer to sixth post in this thread. Motorola lied, both defy and defy+ have the 3630
Reason is that it is well known that defy and defy+ both have the same gpu that the specs say the 3630 has, and the easy overclocking to 1300mHz...
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
I have already defy+ and run on it "Quadrant test" and it shows me that I have same processor like Defy "ARMv7 Processor rev 2 (v7l)" The difference is that my is on 1GHz and Defy is 800Mhz....

Any word yet on a higher clock speed than 1.15? Is it a stability problem? I sure thought this processor would atleast overclock to something like 1.3
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
Considering the Moto Droid's 550mhz OMAP chip was over clocked to more than twice its speed to 1.2ghz you'd think our phone could easily handle 1.5mhz or more but Snapdragon chips aren't looking capable of such feat. Personally I'm not impressed with our chip's performance when compared with OMAP or Humming Bird chips. Its one reason I'm considering the DX or Samsung Galaxy S (Fascinate).
Sent from my HTC Incredible
I agree man. I'm all about the dx as long as it can can be rooted to use custom roms, if not ill wait for fascinate. Kinda sucks when my buddy with his droid is running way faster than me hhaha, I'm getting 11 on linpack, he's around 19 and 20.
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
I saved an old kernel released the day after everything got rooted that's 1228. Its very unstable, i can run a good linpack, but my battery drains FAST plus it heats up rapidly. Give things time, it will speed up
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I also have a droid and one thing i will say is that yes it blows my DInc away on linpack and quadrant but honestly doesn't feel anywhere near as fast. To me all of those benchmarks don't relate to real world use, well, maybe quadrant, and with tht said my only dissapointment in this phone is lack of a better GPU

I honestly don't think I'll ever buy another phone with a Qualcomm chip. They peddled the same 400mhz and 528mhz MSM7xxx chips for years and worked on the "next big thing" and on paper it sounded great but by the time they released it Texas Instrument and Samsung had already surpassed them.

+1 on that! I'm waiting for motorola's dual-core phone, Texas Instrument Chip this year with a front facing camera!
or you could look at this way.....
celerons can be overclocked way more than regular pentium's, but celerons are not superior.
You are not going to get very many Inc's if any to hit 1.3. The newer Snapdragon with a smaller die will do it, but not ours.
I have overclocked a lot of cpu's but this phone is the last thing I want to worry about clocking up. The gain is so minute that it's simply not worth the trouble/effort and it's not worth damaging the phone. I'd rather put energy into testing roms/themes etc. If anything I'd rather underclock it a bit.
I found this video with the new LG-LU3000 Android device with OMAP 3630 CPU at 1 Ghz. In the video can see that the new LG is faster than Samsung Galaxy S and iPhone!!
I hope that the custom ROM will come soon!! (with OC)
Source: en.akihabaranews.com/74638/phones/lg-lu3000-world-fastest-smartphone-yet
I can't post direct links, sorry
Maybe i'm wrong but omap3630 go up to 800 mhz not 1ghz. Instead, omap3640 reaches 1ghz.
take a look here, but there are many other sources, just google for omap36xx.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Instruments_OMAP
Btw, defy itself is equipped with 3630, motorola's specifications say 3610 but they also include a powerVR graphic chip (which is ONLY present in 3620, 3630 and 3640 processors), so it's clear it can't be 3610.
Then i agree with your, TI cpus are great, in my opinion a lot better than qualcomm.
The Defy one is underclocked afaik.
If you check your wiki-link and and follow the Cortex A8 reference, it clearly states the CPU supports everything between 600Mhz and 1Ghz+
Overclocking should start beyond that point, because the CPU supports the mentioned speed already...the defy doesn't use it to increase the battery-life.
Yes i see, 600 to 1000 mhz. I was not 100% sure so i wrote "maybe i'm wrong".. but this is better than i expected.
So, defy + froyo + overclock to 1ghz =
I'll be happy enough with 2.2 and without overclocking. Also, FWIW, the processor range according to android system info (market app), the processor can run at 300, 600 and 800 mhz. My defy is scoring higher than the SGS as it is on quadrant.
I love the defy. My first and as of now favorite android phone. Not as pricey as some of the "top end" android devices, just as fast and powerful (moreso in a lot of cases), rugged, great battery life. I'm hooked! It's a mini beast!

I'm afraid you're wrong.
Just because the CPU supports a 600-1000MHz range, that doesn't mean that it will use the same amount of power at those speeds.
If you look at the likes of desktop and laptop CPUs, they down-clock to reduce power usage when there's less load on them.
So, yes, Motorola's decision to clock the CPU at 800MHz instead of 1GHz may well be a decision to save battery life.
That's what i wanted to say
Sry for my bad english :x
is there any way to overclock to 1G? using setcpu?
Is there any good reason to overclock it?
Motorola droid 2 overclocks at 1.4Ghz stable at 72-76 Vsel ( i seen ) but our defy's can't do that frequency, inclusive with 80vsel still not stable...
There is any reason? why droid 2 can, but defy doesn't.. in "teori" defy have an omap 3630, the same as droid 2.
Maybe something on the driver? or simply hardware limitation?
thanks
Because that Phone has a CPU that has already a higher default clock.
Even if it is the same CPU, the chip used in the Defy mostly just didnt
meet the required parameters for 1 GHz and was stamped 800 MHz.
So you will in most cases not be able to go that far in OC.

I don't care about this... but i'm still thinking there is any way to overclock safetly at 1.4Ghz and more like the Droid 2.

AFAIK Chinese Defy (ME525) also run at 800Hz by default.
Defy may have same CPU as Droid2, but even same CPU of different production batches often have different overclockability.

You haven't been reading the forums carefully... The Defy and Defy+ uses exactly the same TI OMAP 3630 chipset clocked at different speeds, Motorola just wants you to think otherwise... every other hardware is also same except Defy+ has a higher capacity battery.
If Defy+ ROM works on Defy, than Defy ROM will work on Defy+ (i could be wrong tho, we never know for sure until the Defy+ comes out)

Officially the defy uses the 3610 + GFX-chip. The 3620 is just that.
The Motorola Update-WSoftware recognizes the defy as 3630 which in turn is even better than the 3620.
Even if theyd use different chips they are still from the same line and should work with the same software without further changes.
I am pretty sure that cm7 should work on the defy+.
Nevertheless i would wait for approval before ordering it. Perhaps the defy+ comes with an unlocked bootloader which could also be used on the normal defy.
If thats the case, the only reason to buy a defy+ would be the slightly larger battery capacity.
I would seriously consider getting a normal defy as it comes a lot cheaper.
I would buy the Defy+ if the price are pretty much similar with Defy. (I saw preorder for defy+ has been started in UK for £246 including VAT). If the price remains in this range I'll consider Defy+ rather than Defy.

It fits, but you have to use a defy+ rom then, because it has a higher voltage than the defy-battery. CM7 still doesn't work, because you can't use the new battd with it, which is required to fully charge the new battery. Using a defy-rom you only get about 80% of the capacity.

Yes, I see that now... But: I'm not shure they really use the same hardware. There could really be a difference between the 3630-800 and the 3630-1000. Motorola might be buying different processors - with cpus and gpus it's quite common to downclock pieces, that didn't pass all tests, or to disable cores, that don't work correctly...
But yeah, I'm a bit disappointed... Will propably get the Defy now.

Yet you still got it wrong.
Sure they both have 3630, but the difference is there: 3630-800 vs 3630-1000. They may come from the same wafer just like i5&i7, but don't call them the same thing.

I don't think so, but nobody can tell... That's why I decided to wait, even when I'm like a little child when it comes to these things ;-) But I will likely get the Defy+, because for me the better LiPo battery and a guaranteed red-lens camera is worth 20 Euros.
Actually, I can't blaim Motorola for releasing the Defy+. It may be a very small upgrade, but the price is good and will probably be the same as the defy is now, in a few weeks. Blaim them for not releasing Gingerbread to the Defy.
Btw: Can one root the leaked ROMs (and therefore the Defy+)?

thanks for correcting me, racca, and i like your work on the dual os very much
yeah its not EXACTLY same, but TI OMAP 3630 800mhz, clocked at 1ghz, runs smoothly without any glitches, in my opinion (which is not worth much) its the same as TI OMAP 3630 factory clocked at 1ghz, which has no additional features except the higher clock speed. IMHO, its not the same case as i5 & i7 (Lynnfield and arrandale; bloomfield is a different beast) which have different sets of features (hyper threading, etc)
so i doubt the hardware of Defy+ will be any much different, they probably just overclocked it (or rather the defy was underclocked) from the kernel... am not an expert, am not trying to be a smart ass, just my opinion
i could be quite wrong though, never know until we can actually get our hands on the defy+, but for me its not worth the wait and extra cost (the Defy was on a very huge discount 34% off, otherwise its out of my budget range, really wanted the Defy+ too)
but if you can wait, and if the selling price is not much different, then the larger battery and stock GB, stock 1ghz, maybe some fixes such as earpiece, and hoping for a better usb port flaps, is something worth waiting for...
