Lately I've been having issues with my USB connecting so I brought my EVO into a Sprint store yesterday and they opened it up and found that the port had broken off the motherboard. I just pre-ordered the 3D at Radio Shack right before going in there so I was trying to decide whether or not it was worth the $100 deductible to get it fixed. I called Asurion today and my new EVO will be here tomorrow. This is my second EVO, my first I got on launch day and this one I got a month later. I haven't read about anything like this happening to anyone else, just wondering if it has.
yep... happened to me as well. only my store repaired it under warranty so it didn't cost me anything.

Really? They told me that they couldn't repair it in store and that I would have to file an insurance claim.
I was charging mine from my pc n it fell n landed on the usb port. bent the hell out of the cord but didn't break port. It all still works fine but did put S-on.zip and PC36IMG.zip on sd-card just in case it happens in future n i gotta take it in!!!!

I took mine in rooted and running CM7 and they didn't say a word. I'm wondering if I should bother unrooting before I send it to Asurion.
I think I have this issue too, lately I've been having problems with charging my phone through the usb. I think the port might be broken cause the battery life was a horrible b! Plus it would never charge when I plugged it in even though the light was on. I just ordered a new charge cord, to see if that may have been the problem first before I bring it in. Oh yeah, gonna throw in the S-on.zip and PC36IMG.zip just to be safe too!

Alright. I searched a bit and didn't see anything like this so here goes.
I've had charging issues with my evo for the past few weeks, I have to let the cord hang down or the phone would refuse to charge.
I got sick of it tonight and -stupidly- opened it up, thinking I could fix it.
The charging port was apparently extremely loose and completely broke off when I opened it up.
I am also rooted, Think the insurance will cover me, what with opening the phone and root?
If you google evo charge port loose/broken you will get alot of hits. Some say they get a replacement some say sprint would not cover it for them. It seems like it depends on the store. As long as you didnt mess anything up when you took it apart they shouldnt be able to tell. Some say they got a replacement even with the phone rooted, but it would be a good idea to unroot first just to be safe. Imo I would call sprint first and if they say you can get it replaced get them to note that on your account before you goto the store.
The warranty won't cover it, but the insurance should (i.e., you pay the $100 deductible). I don't think there's an exclusion for having tampered with the device, but if you're worried, you could also just report it lost instead of broken, since the insurance covers that too. Just don't try to do something sketchy like Craigslist the old phone if you do that, as they'll have it blacklisted -- just pitch it, recycle it, or find some other creative way to dispose of it. I actually don't think you even need to report it as lost though, since it's supposed to cover physical damage as well.
If you hadn't opened it up, you could have got it replaced without paying - at least at the right store. Mine was the same way, and the one I have now seems to be getting there. I had to put the phone on the edge of my table with the cord hanging down to the outlet. It's a fairly common problem. When I took the phone in, the guy didn't even look at it until he had to get information off of it. He ordered a new one through insurance, but no deductible. I picked up the new one the next day.
You can try taking it in, but if it's obvious that you opened it & the port is entirely broken off they might make you pay the deductible. The only reason I haven't taken this one in is because I use an external charger and just switch out batteries. And up until now I didn't want to get a refurb that I couldn't root.

Well there's no way I'd craigslist it. I might just use it for parts if i keep it, I'll take it to the store and hopefully they'll just replace it.
I don't really care about a deductible.
I might end up just going to assurion and having them just send one out.
Idk when your upgrade is avail but some people have said they called sprint and got an early upgrade.
Oh my upgrade is up, I'd have to pay $200, though. I doubt my evo would be worth the $150 buyback now.
EDIT: Well, $125
Since the evo has been put on the EOL list they might give you the trade in. Only one way to find out call.
Not sure if this helps but here's a PDF i found somewhere one here regarding Sprint's policy.
I'll have to call or stop by the store tomorrow, I looked at the buyback and they will buy damaged devices, so just selling my Evo and getting an E3D would be cheaper if they make me pay the deductible.
Post a pic and I'll tell you if it's covered by ESRP or ERP.

Check my sig. If the contact pads are not pulled off the board then it's a free replacement under "device known issues- Evo charge port durability". If anybody tells you otherwise they are wrong.
Alright-Here are the pictures, sorry for the horrid quality, My Evo was my only good camera so I had to use the built-in webcam on my laptop.
As you can see the micro usb port is entirely detached from the board. One of the points where it connected to the board is missing as well, If it weren't for that i could just tape it on.

correct, however since he opened up his phone, his warranty is void. The only way to get it replaced is though insurance with a deductible now.
Ive read about EVOs getting stuck in car mode and that it is something to do with the USB port. Usually from getting wet but my phone has never been wet.
I wanna know if there is a way to fix it. I bought the phone with no insurrance so I am fully prepared to crack open the phone if I have to.
I may have got this Evo for "free" but its only been a year. I don't want to buy a new phone just yet.

Just pry off the back, no cracking involved. Pull the battery, this should reboot the phone.

There is a setting in car mode to automatically launch when docked. Disable it. I had this problem a while back and a lot of other people said it was bc of the usb port thinking something was plugged in.

I work in a Sprint repair center, and we see this every now and again. Though liquid can cause this, usually that isn't the case. If you've already made sure it is disabled at startup like the above stated, it is probably a connection problem from your USB port and the board of the phone. The same issue can also cause the phone to automatically go to speakerphone when making calls. What happens is there is a bridged connection between two of the charging port pins on the board, usually the 4th and 5th pin (there are 5 pins on the evo).
The fix: if there is a repair center near you that can do resoldering work proficiently, take it there and have them fix it. Corporate stores don't have the priviledge of working with soldering equipment as of yet, so they won't be able to fix it, so it would have to be a retail service center. Otherwise, if there isn't a place that can fix it, any Sprint authorized repair center should be able to order a replacement for you as long as there isn't any evidence of liquid or physical damage on the outside or inside of the phone. If you have insurance, should be free (if no liquid/physical damage), if not then it will be $35. If they give you any problems, PM me.
I'm pretty sure this has been asked and answered but I just can't find anything to help me. My Incredible won't charge. I took it to Verizon and the person there said the port was bent. Is there anyway I can fix it myself or do I gotta pay the 150 I was quoted for the replacement on my insurance?

if the contacts are still soldered onto the motherboard properly, then you should just be able to bend it back. you may need to take apart the phone. If the contacts came loose, you will need to re-solder them (requires soldering skills as the points can be very small) or to replace it. Honestly i think you could find another incredible or a different phone for cheaper than 150.
I probably could but I have had bad luck buying phones online.
Im starting to have the same problem. I have to put my phone in weird positions to get it to charge. I've tried cleaning the contacts and air blasted it and still acts weird.

I can't even do that mine just wont charge..
I know it would be a pain, but buy a second battery and a wall battery charger. Then you can charge one battery with the wall charger while using the other and switch them back and forth. Its inconvinent, but a lot cheaper than a new port or a new phone.
Seems like the best option I can't afford the insurance or a phone at the moment
My verizon gnex usb charging port was acting wonky for a bit, so I had to angle the cord a certain way for the phone to charge. I saw the thread on here (via lifehacker I think) that said to bend the "tab" thing that can be seen inside the port upwards. That actually helped and the phone was charging fine for a week or so. Then a few days ago it just totally went kaputt and wont charge at all.
I called verizon and they wont help at all since my 1 year manufacturers warranty was up in december. And their customer service is really just a sales team as their first suggestion was to buy a new battery and "try" that, then they suggested I buy one of their used samsung galaxy stellar (Never even heard of it!) for $250.
So does anybody have any suggestions on how I could repair/replace the port myself, or get verizon or samsung to fix it?

Edit: do they make a 3 pin charger? How bout an external battery charger?
You can buy a charging port off eBay. I bought one there for $16 with free shipping. Had to come from China, but I had mine in less than a week. Directions for procedure can be found on ifixit.

Thanks, I just found that ifixit article in the meantime. There are no reassembly instructions though which turned me off. I consider myself pretty capable at following instructions but dont have much experience in electronics. How difficult was it for you?
I was able to get mine working again, so I haven't actually replaced mine yet. I used a needle and cleaned all around the charging port, and also gently scratched pins with needle. Would recommend pulling battery if you should try this. It has been about a month and so far no more problems for me.
I have had the phone apart a few times and it doesn't look too bad though.
My USB port has been bad for at least six months. I tried fixing it and ended up shorting something inside the phone. Even the 3 prongs won't charge my phone. Says it is charging but battery won't charge. My solution. Bought two extra batteries and external charger. Love it. Battery dies and just throw in a new one and instantly at 100 percent. You could find a cell phone repair place and they can change the port. No soldering needed on this phone. Just make sure they order the vzw port and not the GSM. They are not the same.
thank you!

So far this solution has worked for me. I pulled my battery and gently scratched the top of the pins. The phone now charges like it is supposed to. The port must get I build up of gunk in there.
Thanks for your tip
Hello all, I have a friend who's wife's note 2 has have had rough life. Cracked screen cause of drops, minimal H2o damage, but despite all the miss-fortune her phone still works. It still makes and receives phone calls and texts, camera works, but the only problem now is that when connected to the charger a prompt comes up reading that the Battery is disconnected. We have swapped out each others batteries to see if that was the problem and it was not. Also this is a brand new battery my friend has just purchased. We did a factory reset thinking it might be a software issue, but to no avail. Any one else heard or seen this problem any where else? He is taking it into sprint today but that might be costly...sooo any ideas guys? Thank you.

I have. Sounds like the port is going out or the usb cable is going bad. Swap out the cable first. Also look inside the port. Do you see any of the legs sticking up or anything.

Yes I tried my usb today and no I could not see any prongs sticking up or anything. it looked like mine when I compared.
-Paint pb Balla-
Well the only thing left I can think of is corrosion on the port. If sprint says there is water damage and refuses to replace unless you go to asurion, you should just buy a new port and solder it on yourself. Unless you dont have access to a soldering gun. Then idk.

Well thanks for trying to help us out man. He did ask about the insurance but apparently with the note 2 it is 200.00$ to replace the phone and not the normal 100 dollar fee for a smart phone. I just don't get why(well I do, its a money thing) it has gone from 50.00 bucks with insurance to replace a phone to 100.00 to replace smart phone to 200 for the note 2. I thought we were all under the impression that the note 2 is a smart phone and not a super smart phone. fudging ridiculous yanno. I mean it is a super smart phone but they shouldn't jack up our prices for it.
