[Q] Evo Power Button Not Working anymore - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so recently my powerbutton on my evo has stopped working for some reason. in order for me to turn in on i have to press the button multiple times until the phone finally turns the screen back on. When i try to turn it off for some reason it goes into the menu with : shut down, airplane mode, silent, etc.
My question is, how could i get a new phone from Sprint if i have to, or
fix this problem if anyone else is having the same problem.
Do i have to unroot my phone before i take it in?

Well first I would like to tell you that when powering on your phone you should hold the button down then let it go it should come on. If not then it might be a problem there. But as for the menu coming up on shut down that is normal every phone does that. Even some other androids. I don't really know if you should get another phone yet maybe just switch up the way you are trying to boot it and see if that helps.
Sent from my GirLie Evo

sorry, when i meant turn on, i meant just turning on the screen.
Ive also tried pulling the battery and putting it back in, but the phone turns on instantly as soon as the battery goes back in. Im not sure if the Button is stuck or if some dust got in it or something, but as for the menu, when i just press the button to turn the screen off again, the phone would stall and then the power menu would pop up

I believe your button is stuck. I had the same exact problem, I wound up going to Sprint, and sat there for two hours as they told me a hard reboot would fix it smh. They would up just giving me a new one.

Did you have insurance on it? I'm having the same issue, but don't currently have insurance. Just curious if they are going to make me send it in to HTC for repairs, or if they can give me a replacement in store.

The power button on my EVO stopped working today. I do not have insurance on the phone, but my local Sprint store just informed me that they will attempt to fix the phone for $35. If they aren't able to fix the phone, they will order a new one for me.
Hope that helps!!

If you want to replace the phone the first thing you have to do is unroot. Sprint might charge you 35 dollars to replace it. (without insurance) They might not though. They'll probably replace it.

So I unrooted my phone, took it into a sprint store and they were going to give me a replacement. Said it would take about 5-7 business days as they are backordered, and had zero in stock. Unfortunately, I'm in the process of moving cross country, and the store can only order a phone to be shipped to their store...not to your address. I called cust service and they said to go back to any sprint store and they could/would order one to my home and I could mail back my current one upon receipt of the new one. Went to another store and told them this, and they said they couldn't! I told them my situation, the CSR asked around in the repair area, and they ended up having 1 EVO in stock that someone else was supposed to get as a swap on theirs, but ended up getting a different phone before the replacement arrived. So they did a swap on site! Cost me $35 plus tax, but I walked out the door with a (what looked to be) new EVO.
Just FYI, when I walked into the store, another person in line was also having issues with the power button on her EVO too.

I had to take mine to the local sprint store to get a replacement. I didn't have insurance, so it cost me $35. But my "new" replacement phone hasn't had any issues!

I had a similar issue myself , My power button was starting to sink into the actual body of the phone . It was random when it would stop working , then work fine after a while . I unrooted took it to a Sprint store where they told me they wouldnt look at it till it had completely failed . Since it being my only phone I was like "yeah fat chance I paid for a working phone and I will have a working phone especially since I pay you people for insurance" . Called Sprint they referred me to their technical support line ,I explained the issue and said they would send a phone . Next day I had a refurbished phone on the door step but heres the good part LOL . I checked the counters . It made 2 calls and no data transferred , and the body was spotless . I think it was just a return or soemthign and they slapped refurb on it even though it was still technically new .

Yes I did unroot my phone. For all they know it was stock. Also did a factory reset before I gave it to them just so all my info was off the phone.

Mine is starting to have the same issue. Gotta press the button multiple to turn on or off. When u put the battery in it turns on automaticly. I have insurance but sprint KNOWS IM ROOTED. My stupidity, I had the salesman put a screen protecter on and I got a txt msg using the miui rom and the screen turned on... My brother watched him type in cpu "user rooted". What would yall do? Can you possibly fix it yourself?

I personally would unroot the phone and go to another store if it is possible in regards to the power button issue . Make sure you restore to stock condition and pay attention to the radios as well as the Pri on your phone when you restore back to stock. Thats what I did , I wiped everything SDcard and all everything was cleaned . I would then go to the store and state your power button is not working correctly . If they pull it up and say user is rooted . You have a clean stock phone , hell download some apps from market just to make it look good . Personally I cant see that being an issue but better to play it safe . Also rooting a phone does not cause a physical part of the phone to fail . Its like saying putting an aftermarket stereo in your vehicle will void your warranty if your O2 sensor fails under warranty . They are two seperate things. Rooting doesnt cause a switch to fail .

I have the 2.15 radio and 1.77 prl. I havnt updated my radio since I put fresh 3 on a long time ago. Yea I kno ots a hardware issue and I read somewhere that sprint would fix hw issues even with root. Not 100% sure on that tho. Its not a real big problem yet but it figures a week after sprint foumd out I rooted my phone I would run into a problem.

My phone's power button stopped working just today. Is it still possible to unroot without using the power button since that's how you select items in recovery/HBOOT?

[Q] Dead screen

I was running my 3G Slide on Cyanogen 6 Stable (latest) with no problem. Then one day I say artifacts on my screen, I thought there was no problem, as I was playing a game at the time. I assumed it was just a bug in the game. So I kept on using the phone with no problems. About a week later however, the first signs of my current problem surfaced. The face keys died and no longer responded, unless I slided the phone open. The problem just got continually worse from there. It progressed to the point where I could not utilize the touch screen when the phone was open and now it is at a state where the touch screen completely doesn't work either open or closed and the face keys do not work either.
Just to differentiate, the face keys are the home, menu, back, and the google search thing. But the side buttons are all intact.
I've tried rebooting the phone with no success. A memory wipe, resetting Cyanogenmod, failed to solve the problem. I've since then emailed HTC to see if I still have coverage, since I bought it second hand, and reverted back to the original rom, from a thread in the Android Development forum, so I would be covered by warranty.
I at first assumed it was the digitizer, which might still be part of the problem; I still haven't completely ruled it out. But the digitizer alone wouldn't explain the dead keys, would it?
Help? Any suggestions if HTC decides not to repair it or charges a ridiculous price?
I also get the "android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly" message now once I boot up.
It's most likely the flex cable that connects your screen, front buttons, microphone, etc. (everything on the front panel). That would explain the gradual going-out of the touch screen and the artifacts on the LCD. Send it in to t-mobile, the phone has only been out since last June, less than a year, so it's under warranty. Call for a replacement.
Thanks for the advice, MusicMan. I visited a T-Mobile store today, and its no doubt its under warranty. But here's the problem. I didn't buy the phone from a corporate store or an authorized store, I bought it second hand, and T-Mobile, after a visit and numerous calls of begging and pleading and employing moral responsibility, they said they can't replace the phone because the phone is not registered under my name... blah blah blah. Apparently warranty is through person and not transferrable.
What do I do?
Also, a side note.
In the off chance that I have to deal with HTC for my problem, what is the radio of the stock T-Mobile rom?
Just to make sure my phone is "stock" as ever before I send it in.
As of now I have 7.00.35.04S
I assume that the phone is still rooted even though it is back on the stock rom, will that be a problem if I send it back to HTC?

You could try to get a hold of the guy who sold you it. If he calls T-mobile customer care and puts you as a "authorized user" of the phone you can get it replaced.
However, make sure you are on the latest OTA. Check out this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946435 and scroll down to my post for another non over the air update method.
-Current stock ( ota ) radio is 7.09.35.10
- Make sure you don't have superuser. If you replaced your rom with the stock build ( like in the method linked ) you should be fine.
He's currently in Taiwan "for a few months", so I doubt he can help me from there.
Also, I'm pretty sure you have to have proof of purchase when you send it to HTC... So that might be a roadblock as well. Your last option would be to order a new flex cable online and install it yourself. Or you could pay HTC the repair fee to fix it.

Thats why the "owner" of the account calls customer care. They already have the record that he purchased the phone. So if he is put as an "authorized user" of the phone he can send it in. Of course the original owner would have to give t-mobile the shipping address and in sense do it. However it only takes maybe 20 mins? Once his refurbished comes in the mail it comes with either a plastic back or box pre-labeled to send the defective product back in.
Along the lines of have the guy call tmobile.
Hi..my cousin is in the states and is having problems with the tmobile slide..I would like to add him as an authorized user so that he may send it in for a refurbished phone...
tmobile will ask for the # and two other pieces of information...password and something else.
imo worth a shot before you have to spend money!

So right now you are unrooted and installed the 1.27.531.1 stock correct? In order to update to the latest OTA make sure you download the zip provided. Both are the same file, but for some reason the one on the google docs worked for me.
-copy the update.zip file to your sd card.
-Turn off your phone then power into fast boot( volume down and the power button)
-go into recovery once fastboot gives you the option.
-Once in recovery just hit "apply update.zip"
-Wait for it to finish installing then reboot.
Edit:
Original Thread for update.zip

Follow the rules in the original thread. Much more detail than I provided!
Enjoy man.
I checked all the settings and anything else that I could think of with a normal never rooted mytouch. All looks perfect...also sent my mytouch back to tmobile doing this. Have yet to hear from them.

[Q] Does anyone have any experience with TEP and faulty phones?

I've had my Epic 4G Touch for well over a year and a month ago I noticed the power button was starting to feel "spongy". It still worked but it lacked that crisp feeling when you pressed it down and released it. This afternoon however, after flashing FI27, my power button no longer works whatsoever. I doubt it was the ROM and more due to the amount of times I've held this button down for recovery access, download mode, etc.
So the power button doesn't work, phone starts automatically when I remove the battery and put it back in. Otherwise the phone is in near-perfect condition and its not rooted.
Anyone know if TEP is going to cover this for free? I've looked online at some resources for TEP and everything is vague or above my level of reading between the lines.
Thanks in advance.
I just had this happen to me last week actually. Just plug the charger in and it'll wake up the phone. Set it back to stock unrooted and bring it into Sprint. They'll either try to fix it or give you a new phone. I had a replacement phone that night for $0.
You might have to pull the battery a few times, but you still should be able to get into download mode
Sounds like the internal button is either stuck or broken, if you take it to a repair center they might be able to fix it for you. However idk what cost would be if any, I dont keep any for of "insurance" on my phone, if i break it I swap to one of the others I have til I buy a new one. I tend to keep my phones mint and don't want to pay for a refurbished one when i have a bunch laying in a drawer.

I'm on FI27 w/ the newest AGAT kernel but just in case I used Chainfires' Triangle Away to get rid of the yellow triangle at boot. Outside of volume down + power button I don't know another way to get into download mode and since my power button is inop I'm kind of stuck.
Do you know of another way to get back into download mode? I have the self-extracting Odin file for EL29 just waiting to erase all evidence of root.
EDIT: Nevermind. Turns out the button is just stuck. I put the battery back in while holding volume down and it gave me download mode access. That solves one problem, lol.
If your capable, you can crack it open and clean the internal button. If its just sticky that should fix it. While you're in there you can look for actual damage which will tell you to go ahead and take it in for repair.

I wouldn't even begin to know how to do that, though I'm sure YouTube has a couple videos detailing how-to. I'll give it a looksee and if it doesn't scare me away I'll give it a shot. If its something I can do, might as well.
Does it still work now after booting back up? Mine didn't work but for some reason if i hit volume up+power i could get into download mode. But when it was actually booted, it wouldnt work at all, nor would it work inside CWM. Weird thing is when I took it into Sprint the touchscreen started having issues too. So that's probably another reason why I just got a replacement.

It works fine outside of the power button. I have recovery and download mode access, touchscreen is operable and nothing out of the norm seems to be going on. It's disturbing to say the least.
Wtf I got this issue after flashing Fi25 rom? Maybe its a bug? It had been working days before and spontaneously stopped working.

This power button problem just happened to mine friday i took it to a repair store they were rude and refused to fix it told me i needed to use my insurance... so i made a call and within 15 min and only 1 transfer (shockingly) to customer care they sent me out a replacement at no cost i received this afternoon and currently trying to put a custom rom on it.. i had the same issues as you and it was hardware related a smack against a table resolved it atrandom and that phone was also stock..
I have been with sprint nearly 10 years and with several calls to customer care you can get alot done.. if one rep dont help call back and deal with another.. I have been 4 months past due with nearly an $800 bill at one point and still no restrictions i have also have a few older phones and some windows phones replaced at no charge in the past but that took a little more work then this one...Ive was even able to get them to credit my account $300 instead of using my 2 upgrades on phones... just call be polite if that dont work try again with another rep..
btw the sprint store i took it to didnt note it on my account if they tell you you must goto a store kindly refuse saying you dont have time.. if the battle seems endless ask for a supervisor twice..

Read my comment, i need a replacement as well, by lock/power button isnt working either.
I went to my local Sprint store this afternoon and apparently I don't have TEP on my phone. Last month I had an upgrade but I'm happy with my E4GT so I let my wife use it so she could get the EVO LTE. We did this through Best Buy Mobile. My wife has a friend that works there so it's where *she* does all her cellphone business. For some reason my TEP was cancelled on my E4GT upon upgrade and unbeknownst to me for the last month and a half I've had no insurance. :/
I called Sprint customer support and explained what happened and in 3-business days TEP will be reinstated on my phone, no charge, and all will be well in the world. The guy at the Sprint store also said had I had TEP this issue would be fixed via direct-exchange at no-cost to me.
I also tried fixing it myself but I got scared when the couldn't separate the screen from the case and gave up before I borked it.

Need to call Verizon about warranty replacement. What version info should I give?

I need to call verizon about a possible warranty replacement for my phone. What info should I give them if they ask me to go to about phone?
Whats the most recent OTA stock rom, radio, etc?
I'll put it back to stock before I send it in, but I'm not ready to do that yet.
Thanks

I just recently got mine replaced by verizon due to my phone having charging issues. I went into the store, didn't call before hand.
I had flashed back to stock before i went in. Told the girl there that it wasnt charging right and i have multiple batteries and they all do the same. she went to look up on some database if others were reporting similar issues (there were none). after giving her my phone number and 5 minutes later she said a replacement is on the way and to mail my old one back in the same box (shipping was paid for)
I was very pleased by how quick and painless it all was. She never touched or looked at my phone at all and asked hardly any questions.
Anyways, not sure how a phone conversation would go, but i would just skip all that and go right to the store (after flashing back to stock of course ) good luck!
edit: my phone also had a chip in the screen (about 2 cm at the bottom right, no cracks though). it never even came up. they were very lenient imo. very happy
I'm having charging problems too. It always says its charging, whether its plugged in or not. Then lots of times wont charge when its plugged in, have to reboot it to get it to charge. Problem is my phones really beat up, and I lost the back cover. But I have 2 weeks left on the warranty so I'm gonna give it a shot. I've got insurance as a backup if they say its too beat up.

I'm assuming you're on Verizon. I noticed they have a promotion on their website that through March 8th they are allowing you to add on their various insurances to your plan. If they send you away just add/upgrade to their best protection (which covers accidental damage) and go in once the Samsung warranty is up. That was my plan anyway, but I'm glad things went smoothly.

is my Power button or Screen bad??

my phone keeps rebooting .. once i touch the power button to turn on the screen it seems like its stuck some times i get the power menu some times the phone just reboots .... i downloaded an app from the app store to be able to use a different hard key to turn on the screen but that some times doesnt work ... i took the phone apart did a teardown of the phone and saw that the power button seem good (which is extremely small btw) unless its messed up from the inside i compared it to the volume buttons...
I walked in to the sprint store (not corporate) guy tells me its the screen that needs to be replaced cause the soft keys are stuck and not responsive he will charge me $50 to fix it since i dont have insurance and if its the power button i need to find a corporate store which i did but was wondering could it be the screen or is it the power button ?

Seems like a power button and an idiot that doesn't know what he is talking about (The "Tech", Not you)... Any moron with a screw driver can replace a screen. Since you did the tear down, it is possible that you did not put the flex cable for the soft keys back or you ripped it off. Since you said that they are unresponsive. If it was ripped off, that will require a full screen replacement.
for some reason the soft keys were not responsive when the tech had it in his hands but every time the phone has stayed on i have been able to use them without any problem . all work as they supposed to ... menu, home, back, search no problems but the phone still reboots .

That confirms that it is a power button issue and that he is a moron that was going to try to get money from you. A power button issue is a known flaw that sprint fixes for free. The soft key issues that he claims you were having is also a known issue, but you aren't having that and also, because it requires a full screen replacement, they charge $50 because that stuff is expensive to replace.
Basically, He was going to only replace the power button but charge you $50 and keep it for himself. I suggest you go to a corporate Sprint store to get it either repaired or to get a refurb replacement.

It is easy to simulate broken soft keys. FYI.
well i dont have insurance on my phone and i called corporate and they want to charge me $50 to fix it .. is that right since i dont have insurance?

Enroll in the Protection plan. They are offering it right now for a limited time even if you missed your 30 days after your contract date to sign up. http://sprint.us/www/2013/tep_open_enroll/tep8.php?key=enroll
At that point Asurion will take care of it. Give it a day and then call back to use it.
If they won't honor it, go here http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-epic-4g-touch-power-button-repair/
Even though they seem to be out of power buttons, try contacting them to see if they can help out.

Well i went to a sprint store that is closest to me that is not a corporate store and the guy asked me if i had a insurance i said no and he still checked my account and said that he couldnt work on my phone since i needed to first pay my phone bill which is for three phones before he could work on it. So i told him im gonna pay the repair in cash why does my account even need to be brought up. He said since he needs to note the account that he was working on it....Arrggghh i need this phone fixed now since its for work and i use it heavily.

Replacements on backorder through Sprint - how long to wait realistically?

I've been having reboot problems with my GS2 for months now and always thought it was a software issue and tried fixing it myself since it was intermittent. Recently I figure out the power button on the thing is somehow damaged where it won't turn on or gets stuck and goes into a boot loop. I went to the Sprint store and the guy almost immediately said it was a known problem and would order a phone and quoted me 5-8 days (he didn't say it was on backorder at the time). It has been a week now and when I call they just say they don't know when they're coming in and they're all on backorder.
I have a pretty much useless phone now for a week and Sprint won't give me an actual date to get a new phone. Any suggestions on what to do? Whenever I call they just put me on hold hoping I hang up after 5-10 minutes until someone else picks up wondering what I want.
FYI This is at the Sprint store and through my TEP plan that I play for monthly.
Thanks for any tips. I'm just very frustrated at this point.
There are a few services to replace the power button. I do it, Mobiletechvideos does it, if you are really good at soldering, you can do it yourself, etc. The only other option is to wait, really.

Well I have one more choice. After calling customer service and telling them everything I've gone through he agreed to reset my eligibility date to today (instead of august 1st). Although if I get a new phone, then I don't think I'd be able to fix the GS2 under warranty. Wondering whether it's worth it, but I think i'll likely just get the new phone and be done with it.
