Replacements on backorder through Sprint - how long to wait realistically? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I've been having reboot problems with my GS2 for months now and always thought it was a software issue and tried fixing it myself since it was intermittent. Recently I figure out the power button on the thing is somehow damaged where it won't turn on or gets stuck and goes into a boot loop. I went to the Sprint store and the guy almost immediately said it was a known problem and would order a phone and quoted me 5-8 days (he didn't say it was on backorder at the time). It has been a week now and when I call they just say they don't know when they're coming in and they're all on backorder.
I have a pretty much useless phone now for a week and Sprint won't give me an actual date to get a new phone. Any suggestions on what to do? Whenever I call they just put me on hold hoping I hang up after 5-10 minutes until someone else picks up wondering what I want.
FYI This is at the Sprint store and through my TEP plan that I play for monthly.
Thanks for any tips. I'm just very frustrated at this point.

There are a few services to replace the power button. I do it, Mobiletechvideos does it, if you are really good at soldering, you can do it yourself, etc. The only other option is to wait, really.

Well I have one more choice. After calling customer service and telling them everything I've gone through he agreed to reset my eligibility date to today (instead of august 1st). Although if I get a new phone, then I don't think I'd be able to fix the GS2 under warranty. Wondering whether it's worth it, but I think i'll likely just get the new phone and be done with it.

[Q] Evo Power Button Not Working anymore

so recently my powerbutton on my evo has stopped working for some reason. in order for me to turn in on i have to press the button multiple times until the phone finally turns the screen back on. When i try to turn it off for some reason it goes into the menu with : shut down, airplane mode, silent, etc.
My question is, how could i get a new phone from Sprint if i have to, or
fix this problem if anyone else is having the same problem.
Do i have to unroot my phone before i take it in?
Well first I would like to tell you that when powering on your phone you should hold the button down then let it go it should come on. If not then it might be a problem there. But as for the menu coming up on shut down that is normal every phone does that. Even some other androids. I don't really know if you should get another phone yet maybe just switch up the way you are trying to boot it and see if that helps.

sorry, when i meant turn on, i meant just turning on the screen.
Ive also tried pulling the battery and putting it back in, but the phone turns on instantly as soon as the battery goes back in. Im not sure if the Button is stuck or if some dust got in it or something, but as for the menu, when i just press the button to turn the screen off again, the phone would stall and then the power menu would pop up
I believe your button is stuck. I had the same exact problem, I wound up going to Sprint, and sat there for two hours as they told me a hard reboot would fix it smh. They would up just giving me a new one.

Did you have insurance on it? I'm having the same issue, but don't currently have insurance. Just curious if they are going to make me send it in to HTC for repairs, or if they can give me a replacement in store.
The power button on my EVO stopped working today. I do not have insurance on the phone, but my local Sprint store just informed me that they will attempt to fix the phone for $35. If they aren't able to fix the phone, they will order a new one for me.
Hope that helps!!
If you want to replace the phone the first thing you have to do is unroot. Sprint might charge you 35 dollars to replace it. (without insurance) They might not though. They'll probably replace it.

So I unrooted my phone, took it into a sprint store and they were going to give me a replacement. Said it would take about 5-7 business days as they are backordered, and had zero in stock. Unfortunately, I'm in the process of moving cross country, and the store can only order a phone to be shipped to their store...not to your address. I called cust service and they said to go back to any sprint store and they could/would order one to my home and I could mail back my current one upon receipt of the new one. Went to another store and told them this, and they said they couldn't! I told them my situation, the CSR asked around in the repair area, and they ended up having 1 EVO in stock that someone else was supposed to get as a swap on theirs, but ended up getting a different phone before the replacement arrived. So they did a swap on site! Cost me $35 plus tax, but I walked out the door with a (what looked to be) new EVO.
Just FYI, when I walked into the store, another person in line was also having issues with the power button on her EVO too.

I had to take mine to the local sprint store to get a replacement. I didn't have insurance, so it cost me $35. But my "new" replacement phone hasn't had any issues!
I had a similar issue myself , My power button was starting to sink into the actual body of the phone . It was random when it would stop working , then work fine after a while . I unrooted took it to a Sprint store where they told me they wouldnt look at it till it had completely failed . Since it being my only phone I was like "yeah fat chance I paid for a working phone and I will have a working phone especially since I pay you people for insurance" . Called Sprint they referred me to their technical support line ,I explained the issue and said they would send a phone . Next day I had a refurbished phone on the door step but heres the good part LOL . I checked the counters . It made 2 calls and no data transferred , and the body was spotless . I think it was just a return or soemthign and they slapped refurb on it even though it was still technically new .

Yes I did unroot my phone. For all they know it was stock. Also did a factory reset before I gave it to them just so all my info was off the phone.
Mine is starting to have the same issue. Gotta press the button multiple to turn on or off. When u put the battery in it turns on automaticly. I have insurance but sprint KNOWS IM ROOTED. My stupidity, I had the salesman put a screen protecter on and I got a txt msg using the miui rom and the screen turned on... My brother watched him type in cpu "user rooted". What would yall do? Can you possibly fix it yourself?
I personally would unroot the phone and go to another store if it is possible in regards to the power button issue . Make sure you restore to stock condition and pay attention to the radios as well as the Pri on your phone when you restore back to stock. Thats what I did , I wiped everything SDcard and all everything was cleaned . I would then go to the store and state your power button is not working correctly . If they pull it up and say user is rooted . You have a clean stock phone , hell download some apps from market just to make it look good . Personally I cant see that being an issue but better to play it safe . Also rooting a phone does not cause a physical part of the phone to fail . Its like saying putting an aftermarket stereo in your vehicle will void your warranty if your O2 sensor fails under warranty . They are two seperate things. Rooting doesnt cause a switch to fail .
I have the 2.15 radio and 1.77 prl. I havnt updated my radio since I put fresh 3 on a long time ago. Yea I kno ots a hardware issue and I read somewhere that sprint would fix hw issues even with root. Not 100% sure on that tho. Its not a real big problem yet but it figures a week after sprint foumd out I rooted my phone I would run into a problem.
My phone's power button stopped working just today. Is it still possible to unroot without using the power button since that's how you select items in recovery/HBOOT?

[Q] Does anyone have any experience with TEP and faulty phones?

I've had my Epic 4G Touch for well over a year and a month ago I noticed the power button was starting to feel "spongy". It still worked but it lacked that crisp feeling when you pressed it down and released it. This afternoon however, after flashing FI27, my power button no longer works whatsoever. I doubt it was the ROM and more due to the amount of times I've held this button down for recovery access, download mode, etc.
So the power button doesn't work, phone starts automatically when I remove the battery and put it back in. Otherwise the phone is in near-perfect condition and its not rooted.
Anyone know if TEP is going to cover this for free? I've looked online at some resources for TEP and everything is vague or above my level of reading between the lines.
Thanks in advance.
I just had this happen to me last week actually. Just plug the charger in and it'll wake up the phone. Set it back to stock unrooted and bring it into Sprint. They'll either try to fix it or give you a new phone. I had a replacement phone that night for $0.
You might have to pull the battery a few times, but you still should be able to get into download mode
Sounds like the internal button is either stuck or broken, if you take it to a repair center they might be able to fix it for you. However idk what cost would be if any, I dont keep any for of "insurance" on my phone, if i break it I swap to one of the others I have til I buy a new one. I tend to keep my phones mint and don't want to pay for a refurbished one when i have a bunch laying in a drawer.

I'm on FI27 w/ the newest AGAT kernel but just in case I used Chainfires' Triangle Away to get rid of the yellow triangle at boot. Outside of volume down + power button I don't know another way to get into download mode and since my power button is inop I'm kind of stuck.
Do you know of another way to get back into download mode? I have the self-extracting Odin file for EL29 just waiting to erase all evidence of root.
EDIT: Nevermind. Turns out the button is just stuck. I put the battery back in while holding volume down and it gave me download mode access. That solves one problem, lol.
If your capable, you can crack it open and clean the internal button. If its just sticky that should fix it. While you're in there you can look for actual damage which will tell you to go ahead and take it in for repair.

I wouldn't even begin to know how to do that, though I'm sure YouTube has a couple videos detailing how-to. I'll give it a looksee and if it doesn't scare me away I'll give it a shot. If its something I can do, might as well.
Does it still work now after booting back up? Mine didn't work but for some reason if i hit volume up+power i could get into download mode. But when it was actually booted, it wouldnt work at all, nor would it work inside CWM. Weird thing is when I took it into Sprint the touchscreen started having issues too. So that's probably another reason why I just got a replacement.

It works fine outside of the power button. I have recovery and download mode access, touchscreen is operable and nothing out of the norm seems to be going on. It's disturbing to say the least.
Wtf I got this issue after flashing Fi25 rom? Maybe its a bug? It had been working days before and spontaneously stopped working.

This power button problem just happened to mine friday i took it to a repair store they were rude and refused to fix it told me i needed to use my insurance... so i made a call and within 15 min and only 1 transfer (shockingly) to customer care they sent me out a replacement at no cost i received this afternoon and currently trying to put a custom rom on it.. i had the same issues as you and it was hardware related a smack against a table resolved it atrandom and that phone was also stock..
I have been with sprint nearly 10 years and with several calls to customer care you can get alot done.. if one rep dont help call back and deal with another.. I have been 4 months past due with nearly an $800 bill at one point and still no restrictions i have also have a few older phones and some windows phones replaced at no charge in the past but that took a little more work then this one...Ive was even able to get them to credit my account $300 instead of using my 2 upgrades on phones... just call be polite if that dont work try again with another rep..
btw the sprint store i took it to didnt note it on my account if they tell you you must goto a store kindly refuse saying you dont have time.. if the battle seems endless ask for a supervisor twice..

Read my comment, i need a replacement as well, by lock/power button isnt working either.
I went to my local Sprint store this afternoon and apparently I don't have TEP on my phone. Last month I had an upgrade but I'm happy with my E4GT so I let my wife use it so she could get the EVO LTE. We did this through Best Buy Mobile. My wife has a friend that works there so it's where *she* does all her cellphone business. For some reason my TEP was cancelled on my E4GT upon upgrade and unbeknownst to me for the last month and a half I've had no insurance. :/
I called Sprint customer support and explained what happened and in 3-business days TEP will be reinstated on my phone, no charge, and all will be well in the world. The guy at the Sprint store also said had I had TEP this issue would be fixed via direct-exchange at no-cost to me.
I also tried fixing it myself but I got scared when the couldn't separate the screen from the case and gave up before I borked it.

I think I got screwed by Sprint, need advice

Friday night the charging port on my Evo decided to break. By break, I mean the OEM charger wont charge it, and the charger comes out really easily. Thankfully, I have a spare charger that works with it. So today I took it to a Sprint store and since I have full coverage they said they will fix it in about an hour. I come back to the store and I'm greeted with a contract and my phone (I was told I would be getting a replacement after the diagnosis but okay) and the contract stated that there was no physical damage and the charging port was fixed with solder. I signed and went on my merry way. I get home and went to see if it works, and they did absolutely nothing. I wasn't going to let this go so I called the store and demanded to know what was going on. The tech told me that; a). my phone is rooted. b). the screen has liquid damage (for the record I can't see anything) c). they can't replace it because of liquid damage and root.. I asked why I was lied to and told it was fixed. He said some bull**** answer to which I replied, "I SIGNED a contract and was told nothing was wrong, and that the phone was fixed" he hardly said a word. Here are my questions for you.
Will I be able to take it to a different store without issue? Is there a safe way to unroot? Don't want to risk bricking it. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks.
Wow what a douche. Yeah go to another store not filled with douches
Sprint should still repair rooted phones. It's their policy.

The charging port is a known issue with the OG I had mine replaced and it was fully rooted, if you have a copy of the contract take it to the store and ask for the manager, or you could try another store

I'd first try another Sprint store. Similar situation with me about having a rooted phone. I tried a different store and still no luck, so instead I returned the phone back to the stock ROM including the Spring Boot Animation and Stock HTC Evo 4G Splash Screen. After doing so, I tried again a week later and got it replaced. :good::laugh:
Good luck dude.:highfive:

You said you signed a contract, what was it for?Did you read it?I believe its some kind of release, releasing sprint from having to fix your phone, because it was modded, which breaks the warranty and any kind of tech support for the phone. You signed it now,so they dont have to help you.Thats why they lied to you in the store, they didnt want any problems in front of the other customers.
I only read the part on the side near where it said it was fixed. It went along the lines of "There was no psychical damage found, the port has been fixed with solder" etc. Honestly I don't think I screwed myself by signing it but I don't know.

You could always go back and ask for a copy of what you signed, or at least inquire as to what exactly it was you signed. Never hurts to ask. If they give you any crap, ask for the store manager and explain things to him/her, but keep your cool and don't act like an a$$.
Sent using my HTC EVO 4G and a magic wand
I would definitely try another store.
I had a 4G issue on in insured phone and unrooted it. Even though it worked out in the long run I was annoyed that I waited an hour to have the privilege to have a person open my phone to say ah yeah we can fix that and then required me to wait another 1 hour for another person to say ah yeah we do not fix 4G here even though the manager told me that they did. I called customer service during the 2nd hour and did not even know which sprint store was the repair facility and had no idea about the store that I was in untill I gave them the store number. They sent out my phone, I came back 3 days later and @2:00 per instructions, waited and then was told to wait some more since they were not sure if it was in or not.
Anyway I can understand a water issue but this idea that you have insurance and that they may or may not help and the stroke around is lame. They do not seem to have any issues collecting the money. It is also lame that they pull any policy issues since your contract is the back of your signed receipt and that does not include any of these contractual details.

Proximity sensor broken?

Love this awesome phone but as of late the proximity sensor on this note has either broke or is buggy. First started to notice that the red light of the proximity sensor would not turn off. After a while as I make phone calls my screen will turn off but as I put my phone away from my face it doesn't turn back on. This may not seem like a big problem but if I can't have full control of my phone it is rather bothersome. For example I cannot properly end calls or switch to speaker phone or utilize my phone during the call. It is rather annoying talking while keeping the screen on because I end up click all sorts of things while my face is on the phone. Need help in fixing it. Tried rebooting, turning proximity sensor on and off, battery pulls but nothing. It sometimes returns back to normal after a while but due to my line of work I cannot afford to estimate when it's going to work. Any help would be great. I apologize in advance if this issue has already been addressed. Thanks!

But I tried holding it with either hand and it still occurs. Hopefully this time I can reproduce it again. I'm fed up trying to figure this out.

Just an update:
I brought it back to my local Sprint store to have the device checked out a 2nd time last week. I was able to reproduce the problem to the CSR and they immediately took it in to get it repaired. Told me to come back in a hour to come pick it up. Hour came up and as I inquired about my phone, the Sprint technician told me there was nothing she could do since it was rooted and simply handed me back my phone without a single explanation. I asked them how rooting a phone physically caused my proximity sensor to not work, and they simply shrugged. I then asked the CSR to please tell me what I can do alleviate this problem and he simply said, "I never rooted my phone before, so I don't know what to tell you". I was shocked because I work in sales and never before have I ever said that to a customer. I decided not to argue even though I know I could have and asked for the manager. I then decided to unroot my phone and go back to stock to see if that would magically fix my problem and of course it didn't.
Today, I went to the Sprint store near my work place, and HOLY COW, it was different. No wait, no line, and when I went to talk to the CSR and technician they were friendly and took the time to try to fix the problem. The tech went to through all the basics, doing a battery pull, hard reset, and even suggested to take off my SGP screen protector (I KNOW! I really didn't want to!). Unfortunately it didn't work, and the CSR told me to come back in a few days so they would order me a new one. Excited to hear that, I then asked them to specify which day and probably not wanting to deal with me anymore, decided to give me a brand new one on the spot. They set everything up and even gave me the box and everything, so now I have an extra charger, cable, and earbuds. It just goes to show how different Sprint procedures are. Both stores were Sprint owned stores, and both had the same technical support yet I was treated so differently.
To anyone having the same problems, please do yourself a favor and just unroot it just in case. I find that some stores will do or say anything to not replace your phone. I have been a loyal Sprint customer for almost 6 years and I feel that they will still treat you like crap.
i would report the first store for sure

Brought my phone in to a sprint repair center store. They fixed it by replacing the sensor. Before I left I inspected it thoroughly, they broke the volume rocker and now they're ordering me a new one since they didn't have the grey in stock and back ordered.
Oh wow well at least it goes to show they are aware of the problem and I guess it's better that you will be getting a new phone.

I would bring it in. To me if something is working incorrectly it is every right for you to get an exchange. I mean I paid $300 for this phone, I better get one that works flawlessly.

Thanks!

The reason the red light stays on is because you have smotion on. With smotion the proximity sensor stays on the whole time. If you turn it off the red light will go off. Don't know if that will also fix your other problem. With the smotion on I don't have any issues.

Well after a few hours of work/waiting I am sad to say that I did not benefit from the good customer service you got.
I went in today around 10 and dropped off my phone to be looked at by the Tech, who was not in until 11.
Around 12:15 I got a call (on my wifes phone) and they let me know that the phone would have to be entirely replaced. The tech told me he could not swap one out for me. I asked to speak to a manager.
Manager, "hello this is Matt"
Me: "Hi Matt, (explained issue again) and I was hoping you guys could replace my phone for me. "
Manager: "We don't have any phones available for that, we will have to order one from the depot"
Me: ' Oh, you don't have any note II's at the store?"
Manager: "We do, But they are for new customers and activation's only.
Oh... WAIT WHAT?
Ok ok. I understand that if he isn't allowed to and MUST order them from the depot....BUT HOW ARE YOU STUPID ENOUGH TO SAY THAT?
I have worked in various customer service capacities for most of my life, and here is what he said sounded like to me:
(not a real quote): "Here at Sprint and/or our store new customers and activation's are the priority."
What he should have said: "I am sooooo sorry. I am not allowed to do that, I absolutely would if I could. How about I order one from the depot for you and let you know as soon as I have an arrival date?"
sigh. So after all that, because I don't have TEP (sprints monthly insureance) I have to pay $35 to get a "new device"
They PROMISED me that it would be new and not refurb. So we will see how that works out.
Thank you for patiently hearing (reading?) my rant......

8th replacement phone. Lemon law?

I'm currently on my 8th replacement phone from tmobile. First one had a power button failure. The next three replacements In a row had screen damage out of the box, phone 5 came dead wouldn't even power on, phone 6 shorted out and it was an issue in the phone so they replaced it for free..., phone 7, last week got a power button issue where the bottom worked maybe 1 out of 50 presses
Now I have a replacement and so far I haven't done anything to it and it keeps turning off and vibrating then stops then vibrates and stops and it won't stop doing that till I hold the power button to turn the phone on. Then it with turn back off right away or just randomly turn off later..
Isn't there a lemon law where if I get to many of the phones ey have to give me a different one?
I had 3 myself. What I did was call T-mobile and raised some hell.
I told them I wanted to be up graded to the S3 because of the S2 problems. And they did. FREE OF CHARGE.
You just have to call em and be firm. Good luck.

No one has that many problems with a phone, period. You're just trying to get a free upgrade. And there's nothing you can say to convince me otherwise... but it doesn't matter to me I guess I'm not T Mobile.I just don't want to have to pay the price later.

This is obvious fraud. Be careful and don't be stupid. If they video record packaging the phone with no problems whatsoever you can probably get into legal trouble since its obvious you're trying to get a free upgrade to a better phone. You're also breaking phones on purpose which is pathetic.
.....actually I went thru 7 g2xs with T-Mobile...when. They send out refurbished piece of junks its possible and never got a upgrade Nor did I try I just wanted a working phone every one they sent me something went wrong or broke within a week

it sure couldnt hurt to try i say you call them up speak to a manager specialist and tell them you dont want that phone you are very un-happy and . that you have to make phone calls every day etc... and its hard to do it with a phone thats not reliable and then tell them you want a different phone good luck
I'm not so sure this is fraud guys. When you call them ..make sure you speak to someone who is higher up..like a manger or sonething ..don't take no for an answer..

I think there is some confusion. the warranty on your phone is by samsung unless you buy insurance. Tmobile and whatever provider you have; as a COURTESY does it for it's customers that bought it from them. You would be lucky to get a 2nd replacement going directly with samsung.
Don't think you even understand how lemon laws work.

How can you be so sure? I had 5 amaze phones before I was given the s2, ask multiple g2x owners, I experienced that phone as well. Forgot to mention that for some reason they sent back the htc amaze.

Cell Phone Lemon Law. ... Bad because it holds cell phone companies accountable for a phone they didn't manufacture - technically cell phone companies are providing a courtesy to consumers by handling the repair/exchange of the defective handsets, when the consumer could actually go to the manufacturer directly

Thank you for the laugh. Skimming through posts for one of my favorite phones and came across this.. First quick impression was.. OMG.. how or why is the OP still able to get the provider to service or replace their T989 phone.
I'm also only replying because you chose to use your very first post on an old post for an old, yet awesome phone. Are you still using a T989 and looking for help with it?
