We’ve been lucky to be loaned a HTC HD7 by O2 to review, so here we go:
http://www.smartphonegurus.com/forums/topic/12068-htc-hd7-review/
As you will no doubt be aware today (21st of October) is the 'launch day' of Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 in the UK and Europe. Our good friends at O2 have kindly loaned us their variant of the HTC HD7 for review. As we only received the machine just in time for the launch date we'll be putting the device through its paces on a daily basis and commenting as to how each aspect of the device works in the real world!
my review is short and sweet though, i got my hd2 today and it rocks
HD2 or HD7?
I have heard a bit of bad press about the hd7 merely being just an hd2 with windows phone 7. The main issues being
battery
screen luminosity (compared to amoled)
and poor construction (the hinge of the camera feeling quite weak)
next question can you put this at rest
expandable memory
do you see a microsd slot on this device or are you stuck with 16/8gb and that's all there is to it?
Is the kickstand flush with the back or does it stick out a bit like engadget's unit does?
Both questions have now been answered in the review thread on site.
Any more questions?

It's been a long time coming, and it looks like HTC's finally gearing up to drop another portrait QWERTY device -- a dominant smartphone form factor that HTC has historically given surprisingly little love. Following the Excalibur (T-Mobile types know this one better as the Dash) and the 3G-capable Cavalier, CNET's Deutschland outpost has learned a bit about "Maple," and what the device lacks in beauty, it looks to make up in pure, raw, unadulterated productivity. You can't rightfully anoint it until you get your hands on it, but from a distance, this thing looks like it has one of the more usable portrait keyboards ever created, a trackball, and a cool new feature HTC is called "Inner Circle," which seems to aggregate communication with people you care about depending on the time of day and day of week. HTC had really been keen on what it's calling "people-centric communication" at MWC, so Inner Circle would certainly fall right into that -- and if you can get over the frumpy exterior, this sucker looks like a solid WinMo-based choice for the suits out there. No word on a release just yet.

why not do it on the same thread? Since you were the OP of it , why not just edit the original thread?.
Just wondering what kind of people hangs out here.
I see a lot of questions from people who are new to Android as well as a lot of answers by people who seem to be very comfortable with this OS.
If you will, mention specific device that you've used before HTC Desire in your response.
I'm coming from a Touch HD running Winmo 6.1..... It's done a good job, but looking for a more intuitive UI, more apps and functionality (not limited by cupertino ) ...... android seems to tick all those boxes. From what I've seen WinMo 7 doesn't really appeal to me. Hope that app development for android will take off even more quickly.... but that should be the case given the growth of the platform. Waiting for my Desire.....

Blackberry Storm v1...the Desire is sooooo much better....This is my first android device.
Nothing beats the blackberry email service...unless theres a email spam filter for Android out there ?!?.... is there ? (sorry - i should really create a new topic for that question!)
Touch Diamond,wm 6.1
I was using a T-mobile G1 with Android 1.6 before the Desire.
I (am) was using HTC Kaiser, still waiting the Desire.
This waiting time is killing me, hopefully Clove really can deliver next week!
In the meantime (since yesterday), I installed Android 2.1 EClair on my HTC Kaiser. It works very well and I could use it to try and test Android apps
maybe add some more detail to this poll, such as hd2, touch pro 2, diamond 2, hero, g1, nexus one, blackberry storm etc
I have come from a Blackberry 8700 and still have an HP iPAQ Data Messenger for work.
And the missus has an iPhone. Just missing the Symbian I guess
selling my HD2 on eBay today, getting my desire on thursday. had a touch diamond before, and also a touch HD. Time for a change me thinks, Android is up and comng, not so limited either. especially with this site too
I was using a Nokia 5800XM then took on my girlfriends old HTC Tattoo...loved it so much i went for the Desire
HTC HD2. My Desire has opened up a whole new world for me! Would never go back to WM6.5 and very unlikely to go to WM7.
I still have a Samsung i8910 Omnia/Player HD, running Symbian OS S60v5. I'll be getting my Desire sometime next week hopefully.
I cannot wait to enter the Android world!
Only ever had WinMo OS devices, new to Android, got shot of my Orbit and bought a sim free LG Cookie, paired it with an o2 Simplicity sim, and we've been plodding away quite merrily over the past year
...signed up to a few forums, like this one, in anticipation of replacing my humble LG Cookie with the HTC Desire.
Still gleaming nfo and price watching
iPhone 3G.
After a few months it was just usless.
Bye bye Windows!!!
Finally got a high spec hardware Android from HTC to relieve me of the turmoil that is Windows Mobile. I spent years hoping they'd get their act together and create something usable but finally gave up and bought the Desire after using a Hero for a month last year.
Owned the HTC HD2, Touch HD, Touch Pro 2, Vario 2 & 3 so tried but Microsoft just couldn't get it right no matter how much the great Rom cookers such as Dutty and HTC's sense tried to cover the sham up. They did their best but at the end of the day, they were limited by WinMo underlying in there.
Freedom of the Desire is something I'm loving and I ain't looking back!
i also tried the Omnia HD (great hardware, poor OS), the Nokia 5800 (bad allround) and even Samsung Galaxy (shame it wasn't updated from 1.5 android as couldve been ok-ish!)
HTC have always impressed me and have moved forward in leaps and bounds over the last 3 years, coupling that with Android as it's now coming to maturity is a perfect combination.
I'm coming from a SE K800i so this Desire is a bit special !!
Came from HTC hero used for about 5 months before going desire 4 days ago....Can wait for Google's OS to come so that I can get rid of Windows 7 on my PC....
Previously have been using winmo for the last 5 years....
I have an Iphone. Planning to buy the Desire next monday in HK.

The point of the poll was to find out what platform people come from and then they can share what phone they've used before in the post.

Now I must say I'm quite surprised to see how many people used platforms other than Android before getting an Desire. I'd say that's great, it means Android android adoption is speeding up.
The smartphones that I've used are listed in my signature. Of course I had many dumbphones before that, but those don't count any more
I think Android and iPhone OS are the only two real competitors in today's market because no other platform will ever catch-up. I might be wrong - you never know... So since I don't like closed nature of iPhone and no choice in hardware, I will stick with Android for a while.
Hi
My contract is up for renewal soon and I've decided to give the Android platform a go after using WM pda phones for 10 years or so.
I'd narrowed it down to the Desire then saw the Samsung Galaxy S with its built in 8 / 16 gb and had a brief moment of "which one".
However, I currently have a Samsung i900 which I've had for 18 months and while its okay, it doesn't seem as good as previous HTC models I've had, especially the screen so the Desire is back to the top of the list.
My wife has recently got an iphone 3gs and the screen and interface on that is awfull when compared to what I'm used to although she loves it but shes never used any of my phones in the past.
The only reservation I have about changing to Android is that I have all my favorite WM programs in Cab format and can set up a new WM device in a couple of minutes. Still, the unkown aspect will be fun and there is plenty of support on this site which I've missed with the i900 although the Modaco guys are very helpful.
Anyway, enough waffle. I'll probably be back soon with questions on how to do this or that.
Once you have apps on yur device you can back them up onto your SD card to be reinstalled easily in future so that takes care of that!
I came from a HD2 and Android is a million miles ahead of WinMo IMO - and the Desire is an awesome device, better than the iPhone 3GS
Get one, you won't be disappointed
As somebody who has just moved from a long term WM relationship to the Desire I can tell you that it didn't hurt.
The learning curve is not that steep and apart from a few niggles, I am not missing anything (apart from Live Mesh) yet.
I feel like a kid thats waiting for xmas - getting impatient but excited cos I know that my contract'll be up in a few days. Desire here I come.
from someone who's been on windows mobile for 2 years and had the hd2 since the day of the release, switching to the desire was the best move i ever made. I loved my hd2 but the desire is amazing. I do miss the nice big screen on the hd2 but oh well. IMO android is what windows mobile should have been, it is smooth, stable and i have never needed to perform a soft reset as of yet. I remember with the hd2 i was flashing roms on a weekly basis and use to love customising, but i can honestly say i am glad i switched
The major gripe I have with windows Phone is how it's sold or as is the case mis-sold. If quarterly results are correct - circa 1.5m Windows Phones sold that is pretty diabolical when you consider just how good the platform is.
I showed my phone and its features to my sister and brother in law and they liked the way it worked - its fluidity and how they could easily email, use calendar web etc. It wasn't a hard sell.
So I went around to all the cell phone stores in my local shopping centre and all the major retailers - Vodafone, T-mobile, o2, Orange, Three, Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4 U all had one phone front and centre - no guesses it's the Iphone.
The salespeople were on the most totally inept and either tried to shift an Iphone or any Android device. Their knowledge of the Windows Phone was either non existant or plain falsifications. Ontop of that the one salesperson who did know about Windows Phone was saying all you are interested in is office integration which Android provides.
There is no clear message to the public of what windows phone is and what it can do. Also the same phone is not available on all networks unlike the iphone.
If MS and Nokia want to sell tens of millions of windows phones a quarter they are not going about it the right way. Spending hundreds of millions on an ad campaign will create an initial boost but it won't last.
The problem MS has is that it probably will not want to push one phone above another in their adverts which will then create more confusion. Nokia will push their phone and brand above the o/s - there will be this confusing message once again.
I feel that for Windows Phone to be a success MS needs to get into bed fully with Nokia and actually have a joint marketing campaign - yes this may put of Samsung, LG etc but with the volumes currently shipping it won't be such a great loss.
Essentially we need one windows phone to rule them all. One phone available on all the networks.
I think it's a very bad idea to undermine the other OEMs just to fully promote Nokia. It's not really their faults the phones didn't sell, the OS was lacking and Microsoft didn't promote it very hard.
The issue is more in the sort of ads you use. Like you've seen, people who see WP love it so the ads should show the OS in action similar to ads for the iPhone and Windows 7.
You can do a huge campaign for Nokia if you like but if it's just generic stuff and tease (Oooh, we have Xbox Live and Office you know) without actually showing the OS it will be pointless.
Currently, I think a majority of people are waiting on better hardware coupled with mango. I,myself, am waiting on the new Samsung offering before I make the switch from Android to WP7.
I like the look and feel of WP7 vs. Android. Having an Iphone and now Android, I'm tired of the similar UI that is shared between them. Different is good and as long as functionality and ease of use is there, I think you'll see more people migrating over by next year.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Gotta agree with noidd here, a lot of people are waiting for new hardware with Mango.
The whole one phone to rule them all is Apple's philosophy, and I'm sure that's one of the reasons why people started running to Android in the first place.
Hopefully we'll get a flagship phone like the galaxy s2 and people start noticing WP7 a little more.
As for the whole carrier mess, here in Norway and in pretty much entire Europe, u can get any phone on any carrier you like and I hope that kind of ridiculous carrier monopoly goes away sooner than later in especially the US.
Trust me, Nokia is a fools-even-know brand in China and when Nokia started selling WP7 phones in China, quickly billions of WPs wil be sold.
From the respective websites
O2 - HTC HD7, HTC 7 Mozart
T-mobile - no Windows phones
Orange - HTC 7 Mozart, LG Optimus 7, Samsung Omnia 7
Three - no windows phone
Vodafone - no windows phone
Each one of the above websites had a dedicated Iphone page and promoted Android.
The Iphone is promoted so much and hyped once people decide they want it they can get it on any of the 5 major nextworks in the uk.
Looking at 2 big phone retailers -
Carphone Warehouse - HTC HD7, HTC 7 Mozart, HTC 7 Trophy, LG Optimus 7, HTC 7 Pro
--Vodafone - HTC 7 Trophy, LG Optimus 7, HTC 7 Pro
--Orange -- HTC 7 Mozart, LG Optimus 7, HTC 7 Pro
--Tmobile - LG Optimus 7, HTC 7 Pro
--o2 - HTC HD7
--Three - none
Phones4u -
Vodafone - HTC 7 Trophy
Yes again they promote the Iphone front and centre as if their life depends on it. From whhat I have gleaned they make less profit on the Iphone sales than on high end Android phones but as the Iphone has become something of a golden child network operators stock it more to show theire relevancy as an operator in the eyes of the doe eyed consumers.
I still maintain that until Windows has a one or two phones available on all networks it won't make any impact whatsoever.
At launch Vodafone were carrying the Trophy and the Optimus 7, Three were carrying the Omnia 7 and Optimus 7 and T-Mobile were carrying the Mozart and Omnia 7. Those carriers dropped the phones because they a) weren't selling well and b) were old handsets. They didn't sell well because they were poop. Overpriced poop.
Look at the handsets available, then look at the prices they launched at. Every single one was available in Android flavour, and for significantly less (and, in many cases the Android hardware was superior). The HD7 and Mozart were the same price as the Desire HD, yet the HD7 and Mozart had lower quality screens and cameras. The Trophy was a similar spec to the Desire, and the Omnia 7 to the Galaxy yet both were significantly more expensive than their Android counterparts. There were also significant build quality differences in some cases. In a nutshell, Windows Phone 7 handsets were a bit of a con at launch and people weren't stupid enough to fall for it. The manufacturers messed up.
Coincidentally, I just made an off-topic, throwaway remark about this issue in a post in another thread. I've had the same experience (in Canada) of having salespeople try to deflect me away from WP7 to either Android or iOS. When WP7 first became available where I am, the salesman that I purchased my phone from expressed surprise at how good WP7 was, having just returned from a convention in Toronto. That was November 11, 2010. Since that time, I've not heard one good thing about WP7 from any salesperson. Invariably, WP7 is played down and iOS and Android played up. The user experience (this is always vague, the implication being that somehow WP7, not being as pervasive as the two biggies, somehow falls short and that anyone running WP7 will be missing out) and quantity of apps in the app stores are the two most common reasons given. Extending this "theme", I've even had salespeople assure me that Windows 8 tablets, when they come out and which will extend the Metro concept, will be crap!
Point is, I wonder if Android OEMs and Apple are offering larger incentives on the sale of these devcies, either to the individual salesperson or to select retailers? This idea is prompted by having bought an LCD tv at Christmas. I wound up buying at a furniture store and the salesman *used* to work at Futureshop (large electronics store in Canada like Dixons in the UK or BestBuy in the US - indeed it is now owned by BestBuy). He told me that the salesforce was pressured to push Samsung because of a huge difference in the commission paid relative to competing products. Indeed, this was my experience as I shopped around: I was consistently directed toward Samsung.
I own and use Android and iOS devices and the original release of WP7 was very competitive in my opinion. Mango, which I have just started using, is even more competitive. I can't see why a salesperson knowledgeable about the device and its competition would steer potential customers away without external motivations? I'll be very interested to see what happens this fall, when Mango and second gen WP7 devices become available.
Apple provide sales incentives - nope. From conversations I have had with Vodafone in the UK and AT&T in the US they get very little from Apple - they sell the i-phone as its what people want and b) they hope to keep them on after their contract is up. Otherwise they make more money on the Android devices.
Boils down to this for operators
1) Must sell i-phone as it's what people want even though margins are crap.
2) Must sell Android as volumes are good, as are margins but we can also modify the o/s.
3) Wp7 is an efterthought as its not selling well and we can't modify the o/s. As to margins that would be anyones guess.
I blame this all on the Scary Butterfly lady...
Things should get better with Mango and some current hardware. The OS was really released too soon for the wrong reasons with an obnoxiously unimpressive hardware spec. As long as Microsoft follows up Mango with a great Ad campaign this should get right back on track. Microsoft tends to flounder with their initial release then they fire the morons that looked impressive on paper and get some real muscle in there. Just look at the launch of the Xbox brand if you need historical proof of this.
Just watching TV Burp on itv1 in the UK and there were lots of 1 second adverts during the break, all showing different close up shots of a device which is sat on a series of lit up tiles... Don't have any clips... But the tiles reminded me of the Nokia WP7 poster id seen online somewhere. Is a launch from Nokia imminent? If it is Nokia and WP7 then the teasers are a brilliant way to create some excitement about the new phones =]
I just got a Titan, so no Nokia for me... But Nokia could finally be what WP7 needs to make some headway into the smartphone market.
Aye great way to get a bit of interest going!
Just seen them in the xfactor ad breaks, looks good.
Seen in X Factor breaks too. Not that I'm, ahem, watching the X, is the wife, honest. Excellent teasers though. Hopefully raise some interest...

Well according to this link there's probably an imminent announcement from Nokia as they've got their 'Nokia World' event coming very soon (see the countdown on the page - in 5 days time).
The handsets certainly look interesting.
