What's the latest on the Evo screen issue? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was thinking about getting my phone replaced but i don't want to get a phone that has a crappier screen than my version 2 phone. What's the latest on the new Evo's being sold nowadays? What hardware rev are we at? If I choose to exercise my extended warranty will I get a new phone or a refurbished one? I'm not talking about the manufacturer warranty. By the looks of the official HTC forum thread on this issue, Sprint and HTC are still giving consumers the run around and its not really getting any press exposure.

I believe it's version 3 still...i've been waiting also for maybe one more version like 4..if they make 4..to claim insurance, pay deductable, and use my current one as a backup(lost)..my screen is light leaking like others but I use a case that covers it so I can stand looking at it

That is all good in theory except one part. When you report your device lost/stolen Sprint will permanently deactivate the ESN and should you need to rely on your backup at some point you will not be able to reactivate the phone.

Report lost, keep phone?

Would the phone still function as a wifi device when you report it lost? If im going to pay $100 I much rather keep my current phone for wifi and testing out roms, its a rev 2 with tons of light leakage, some LCD pixel rainbow leakage near the top of the screen,a minor scratch on the screen, battery cover is warped and bent out of shape it barely stays on and theres a ding on the bottom right side.
Don't even think its worth trying to argue with radioshack that I should get a replacement under warranty instead of paying insurance $100 of my hard earned cash.
I can't stand dealing with brick n mortar employees.. they are so aggravating to negotiate with.
Also, in before Sprint employees call "FRAUD!" I think selling me a phone with so many major defects then trying to make an extra $100 off me to replace is more fraudulent.
I won't judge you!
Yes wifi will work fine.
lol, I just deleted my response to your thread in General. FYI, a mod can easily move threads around..

The only possible problem would be it trying to run the Hands-Free-Activation but I think you're good if you leave it powered off for a day after you activate the new one. Also, you can avoid that possibility all together if you put CM on it. Sprint can't activate AOSP builds on their network. I've had to flash back to Sense builds 3 times to get phones switched around between my Sprint account and my Dad's.
Why doesn't everyone do this to have an extra wifi device? Oh, that is why they cost 600 bucks to buy outright.... that's right.
In your situation i see no problem and won't judge.
Everyone else who sees this thread and does it just because they want to browse porn on their couch is what aggravates me.

Agreed, the OP doesn't seem to be a crook. I think his logic is pretty sound but the only difference between him and someone doing this for fraudulent personal gain is intent..
I want to offer an opinion about the price point for these phones. Working in the heart of an international company (the third largest in our industry) I am of the opinion that the $600 price point has no relation to the people that commit fraud to get new phones for whatever reason. The price of the phone is $600 because that's what the brilliant business analysts at Sprint, HTC, or whatever consulting group they contracted told Sprint is the sweet spot between profitability and perceived value in the consumers mind, coupled with the subsidized price of $200 with a 24 mo contract. They could sell these phones for $300 and make a diminished profit, or they could sell them for $800 a pop but end up selling half as many.
The price points are built to take a predictable percentage of fraudulent claims in to account. I AM NOT ADVOCATING FRAUD!! I am only suggesting that if no one committed fraud and got free phones or kept "lost or stolen" replacements for WiFi enabled backups.. the price would still be $600. The difference is Sprint, HTC and Asurion would make a greater profit margin.
Again, I am NOT ADVOCATIN FRAUD. If you are a thief then you don't deserve to own an EVO. But I'm tired of seeing people drop the "you are the reason this is so expensive for me" line. It's just not true. It would be more accurate to say "people like you are why Dan Hesse's kid has to settle for a Gallardo when he really wanted a McLaren F1". I do not feel sorry for Dan's kids.. at all.
it likely has little to do with the price of the phone but it certainly has to do with the price you have to pay azurian for the replacement.
while you may not be selling it reporting it lost/stolen is still fraud(as it is not lost or stolen and you are reporting it that way specifically with the intent to keep the existing phone). i wont judge just saying fraud is fraud at least accept the facts.
I also wouldnt be posting your intent to fraud on a public forum but that's just me. chances are nothing will ever happen but if you are the one sucker they catch they can easily track the post back.

awesome i love cm6 but cant use it cause it has no 4g but since my first evo will only be wifi it will be perfect, so I should flash cm6 back on then call the insurance and claim it lost?
edit: also turn off the phone untill I get my replacement a good idea too? pop the battery out?

Just put it in airplane mode and make sure GPS is off and I think you should be fine but pulling the battery would be the safest. Tell them its at the bottom of the lake. Then they would have zero reason to even attempt to try and do a locate on it or anything.
Take the battery out. If you can use a app to take pics from the internet I'm sure they can turn location on or find it with it turned off. My 2 cents.

[Q] Is it still possible to get an AMOLED from Verizon?

I was just wondering if it was still possible to get an AMOLED from Verizon if I say, complain a lot about my screen lacking in comparison with a competitors phone. I got my DINC about a month ago and love it and I like the screen as it is, but from a programming perspective, it seems that there are two different methods that people need to take on whether they have an AMOLED or SLCD. Thoughts?
It would probably be a refurb if you got one. Being over a month though don't count on it. Getting it would be the luck of the draw anyhow from their warehouse.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I remember last week when my gf and I went to go get her an Incredible the salesman was telling her it was AMOLED and I was like no its not. He was like yes it is. But I eventually proved him wrong. Shows how much they actually know about the phones they are selling.
Anyways you could probably tell that story without the proving him wrong part and complain alot how you can't see the screen very well in sun.
You might be able to get a refurbished one or maybe a custom order.

Some stores still have some in stock, that's how I got mine, just ask for one with the serial say the end of w2 keep in mind that after 30 days you cannot return the phone and it is considered used

Because they use different drivers.
For the most part you cannot get an AMOLED version if you bought an SLCD version.
If you have an SLCD version and ask for a refurb they will only give you the SLCD, you cannot request an SLCD version because the way that the request is done in the computer and the selection process in the warehouse.
I've gone through 3 AMOLEDs so I wanted to try an SLCD to see if the hardware was better put together, but they wouldn't give me an SLCD version no matter how much I asked. They simply gave me another refurb AMOLED. There are refurb AMOLEDs in warehouses, but I highly doubt there are any new ones anywhere.

I still don't get it. Sure, if you are writing an app that tries to access the screen directly through the hardware layer, I can see where you would need to target specific drivers.
But, in all the years of app development, I have always used the OS' API for the HID interaction. That way you don't have to write different versions of your code to target specific makes and models of hardware.
For instance, in the Windows world, a paint or print command in an app does not care about specific makes or models of monitors or printers. That is taken care of by the OS' interpreting the command from the API and passing the interpreted commands through the I/O ports.
The corollary in Android would be you would use the Android API (in the SDK) to interact with the screen. The OS would be responsible for passing that interaction on to the screen itself through the drivers.

I do see your point but I believe it has to do with the fact that with full replacement mods such as Cyanogen, they interact with the phone at a level lower and need direct access to the screen hardware.
Whether you believe it or not, it is a fact for example try flashing CM 6.0.2 to a SLCD, the screen will not work.
I don't think this affects the sense-based ROMs as much, but I could be wrong. I haven't looked too much into them.
Screen type has no affect on apps, and that is all OTAs really are, besides maybe a couple of coding brush ups to fix some system bugs, but those would not relate to the screen either. The main problem between the AMOLED and SLCD is that they require slightly different coding in identifying the display, which is why AOSP roms had trouble installing on SLCD when they were made for AMOLED. The rom was trying to recognize an AMOLED screen and sensors but obviously was not finding one.
Thanks, guys. That makes sense.
App Development - Probably don't need to get down close to the metal.
ROM Development - More likely to need more direct access to devices.
Especially when working with an OS where we can get our grubby mitts on the kernel source code itself.
i recently got back into the icredible game,(got one on luanch day, sold it, used, x, then fascinate, then saw a Amoled one at a shop, in pristine condition and picked it up) anyway, the guy i got it from is a very honest guy, and i have been dealing with him for about a year now and he said that he had ordered about 10 wholesale from VZW about a month ago and told me it was AMOLED and i doubted him at first but then checked up on how to find out which it was and he was true to his word, and upon speaking with verizon the phones ESN had never been activated, so i would think that the easiest way to get them would be to find a 3rd party retailer, and then check it out and see which screen it has, it could be entirely possible to find a VZW store in a remote area that has absolutely no business and still has them in stock, i know that the SLCD ones actually ship with froyo, so if on the box it says it has froyo then thats one easy way, and if it says android 2.1 then you may have a winner, just a few tips on how i got lucky maybe they will help you out.
That is not true, some amoleds like mine shipped with 2.2. to tell go into settings, about phone, then hardware information, if it says 0002 it's amoled if it says 0003 its super lcd

Also my town has over 50000 people living in it, so we are by no means small. a friend lives in san francisco and he got a stock amoled the same time I did
Sent from my HTC Incredible
A lot of the smaller stores practice what is pretty close to JIT inventory, keeping a very few phones in stock. When you go in to buy one, they put you on the phone w/ a central location and the phone is overnighted to you.
That's how our two DINCs got to us, and we went to a store in a large city.
To the OP, I think it's going to be somewhat of a crapshoot. You could call or visit stores and hope to get in touch with someone who knows what they are doing. Then hope they have an AMOLED in stock.
Same holds true for calling VZW. Keep calling until you luck into someone who knows what they are talking about, then hope they can find an AMOLED for you.
Good luck!

[Q] Repair/Replace Options

So here are the facts:
I dropped my EVO and the screen shattered like an iPhone. Looks like a spider web.
Sprint contract started 11/2010, so I'm not up for upgrade/renew for almost a year.
My phone is rooted w/ EVO Deck ROM. I would probably need to undo this before taking to Sprint.
All other functions on my phone work as usual, just hard to see with the screen.
I'm an engineer, so I'm not too scared of trying to repair this manually.
...I'm also a mechanical engineer, not electrical, so good chance I could make things worse.
I really don't want to spend $600 to replace this phone.
I love the EVO, but if there are any upgraded models out there I would prefer to buy one of those if I must buy new.
Now, here are my questions:
If I choose to repair, I found this guide. Seems legitimate, unless someone can suggest better?
I think this is the kit I'll need to buy to complete the repair, but honestly I have no idea if that is 100% what I would need?
If I were to buy new, then which phone and from which store to find best price?
If I were to buy used/refurbished, which service would I use to find a legitimate replacement?
Which of these 3 options (repair, buy new, buy used) would be most recommended and why?
Thanks for your help!
My understanding is that screen replacement is pretty easy. I've seen a lot of people post they did it themselves. being any kind've engineer, I think you could handle it.

Three replacements and four phones in thirty days. . .

So the first phone was new and had crackling speakers. Second phone that was sent to me was refurbished and had a smudge underneath the screen so it wasn't cleanable unless I opened the hw. Third refurbished phone had a glass gap between the screen and the base of the phone, so there was bleeding light coming from the back of the phone. Now T-Mobile is sending me a fourth refurbished (most likely) phone.
All the replacements seen to be refurbished.
Imagine. . .I played for S-Off each time and a screen protector each time. That's around $140 ($25x4 + $10x4) USD just on replacement bs.
Anyone else having these issues?
I unrooted, restored stock ota, re locked, and re s-oned the first two devices (fourth device is coming 6/1/15) to restore original (warranty) status despite all these issues being hardware related. Keep in mind I'm no newb to phones.

If you are not new to the phone section, you would not pay for s-off everytime before you check the phone for defects or whatever. So you could save a lot of money,
if you check your device with Pixel test and eyes before you set it s-off
Other then that, i do not have any problems with the phone. Its a huge improvment from m7 build quality to m9.

I already checked for defects. However it was only noticeable during the night. As for the smudge, it can be taken off with a microfiber, however once the oil of the skin touches the screen it comes back. All of these were freak incidents.
Pixel test has nothing to do with my problems with the phones as I have no dead pixels.
Like I said, definitely very aware of my phone and its uses. I've had every phone out there and do numbers of different ports for audio. So its not like this is my first rodeo.

T-Mobile is very generous as they credited me $60 at no hassle or haggling. They've sent me several replacements with no hassle. However they said if the third replacement they send me is defected, they'll allow me to choose a swap of the M9 for another phone. . .which is not what I want because I like this phone.

Sorry to hear that you're having issues getting a unit without defect. I ordered my developer edition phone a few days after it was available and it showed up in perfect condition. I had read about issues regarding gaps at the screen and body, and a "clicky" area at one of the screen boundaries, however my phone was free of all of those. My old M7 had one pixel that would only display in white, but I kept it and was very happy with it.
Bottom line - I hope you get an M9 that you are happy with, because this phone is awesome. As hamdir notes in the sticky thread at the top, the upcoming firmware update brings great improvements to daytime camera performance and battery performance. HTC continues to show themselves as a company dedicated to delivering a great experience for their customers.

You appear to be the exception and not the rule with regard to defective M9s. If you hold out for an M9 that meets your standards, I think you'll be very pleased with the device. Good luck!
I ended up with 3 of them at one point. Got to choose between two grey and one gold silver. One of the greys had phucked up speakers. Kept it for a few weeks prior to paying for S off... What kind of momo would pay 25 USD the second they receive the phone. Ended up paying $450 cdn for one after all the credits they gave me for the hassle.

I wish I'd sent mine back. Horrid battery and camera experience with this one
If it makes you feel better, I went through 3 Galaxy S6s with defects before I went to the M9. Yeah, I'm not happy with this onr, but it's more the camera and the heat that's ruining my experience. I'm just not sure why the hell you paid for S-Off 4 times. After the first, I would have waited to make sure the phone was FLAWLESS.

Hello boys and girls.
Would you be so kind to explain me how to understand if my htc one m9 is refurbished? Tried ##778# code and it does not work for me. And my phone is not rooted also.
Thank You in advance.
Best Regards,
So the third replacement they sent me (fourth phone) was also defected. So I finally called @HTC and explained to them what happened. They're sending me a new device, not some cleaned up BS used device. The one they will send me is going to be brand new. Good guys HTC (warranty).

Possible to insure mi mix 2?

I'm considering the mi mix 2 but one thing i worry about is replacement parts if anything happens to the phone. So can you get insurance on these just like any other phone?
Use a credit card that provides an extended warranty on purchases.

This is going to vary from each 3rd party that's selling the Mi MIX2.
Basically, the seller handles warranty claims for you,so,additional insurance may not be needed, unless you want damage coverage.
The buyer is usually on the hook for shipping charges on at least sending it in.
Regarding insurance against loss &/or damage, there are 3rd party insurance plans, such as Square Trade & Ascurion:
https://www.squaretrade.com/
https://www.asurion.com/phone-insurance/
Her's a list that has a couple other insurers you may be interested in:

I guess i should clarify im talking insurance from damage like a cracked screen or cracked rear ceramic. Ive never really had any problems with something having to file a warranty. I didnt know if since this phone isnt sold in America if it could be insured or not?

Same thing applies from my previous posts, you'll have to do your homework & check out each insurer/3rd party seller.
It's a bit soon to see individual parts for sale on eBay/etc....
so, if this is a major concern, you'll probably want to wait a month or so before diving in.
My guess is that parts will eventually be available considering this is a global phone & a potentially lucrative market for parts dealers/etc.....
Cool. Thanks for the advice and quick responses. Sucks cause i feel like insurance is kind of a waste of money cause ive never had to use it and i pay 12 a month on my s8+ for it. But i know the moment i dont have it ill have a cracked screen
