So here are the facts:
I dropped my EVO and the screen shattered like an iPhone. Looks like a spider web.
Sprint contract started 11/2010, so I'm not up for upgrade/renew for almost a year.
My phone is rooted w/ EVO Deck ROM. I would probably need to undo this before taking to Sprint.
All other functions on my phone work as usual, just hard to see with the screen.
I'm an engineer, so I'm not too scared of trying to repair this manually.
...I'm also a mechanical engineer, not electrical, so good chance I could make things worse.
I really don't want to spend $600 to replace this phone.
I love the EVO, but if there are any upgraded models out there I would prefer to buy one of those if I must buy new.
Now, here are my questions:
If I choose to repair, I found this guide. Seems legitimate, unless someone can suggest better?
I think this is the kit I'll need to buy to complete the repair, but honestly I have no idea if that is 100% what I would need?
If I were to buy new, then which phone and from which store to find best price?
If I were to buy used/refurbished, which service would I use to find a legitimate replacement?
Which of these 3 options (repair, buy new, buy used) would be most recommended and why?
Thanks for your help!
My understanding is that screen replacement is pretty easy. I've seen a lot of people post they did it themselves. being any kind've engineer, I think you could handle it.

Unfortunately my Touch Pro 2 is in need of a replacement. Asurion is out of stock of the Touch Pro 2 so it seems that I'm having to get a different phone. They are currently offering the Omnia II or the Imagio as a replacement. I don't really like either of those since they don't have a physical keyboard. I was going to call and see if I could get something else. That's where you guys come in.
What phone should I try to get Asurion to send me again? I would really prefer to have a good physical keyboard, but I would be open to having an all touch screen phone if the screen was big enough and it is a great phone. I'm on Verizon by the way.
So what do you guys think I should get? Or do you think there would be a way I could get a Touch Pro 2? I've read about people buying one and sending in the receipt to get reimbursed but I'm not exactly sure how that works.
Thanks in advance!
Verizon still offers the Touch Pro2 as far as I know. I'm not quite sure what other choices there are. Perhaps if you posted your choices, we could offer our opinions on them. The two devices you listed aren't very enticing, in my honest opinion.
I am in the same situation. My refurbished phone has a cracked screen among a few other issues with battery drain and signal that I didn't have with my previous TP2s. Asurion only offers those two phones which I don't want a non-keyboard phone paired with windows mobile.
Verizon offered me TP2 for 285 for a 30 day returned unit which way too much.
I guess my other option is to try to replace the screen. Phone is functional outside of the WM issues and battery drain.
I don't know what phone to get because Verizon simply doesn't have another phone with a keyboard. I thought about getting a 39 dollar Fascinate but I don't want a new two year either.

What carrier are you using? Are they open to give you other options if you are unwilling to accept two models you have mentioned?
How about a decent Android phone? If you are willing, I can make recommendations, but I do very much like my TP2.
Hi, long time lurker, first time poster :3 Iv done a LOT of research on this phone (borderline overkill) but I still have a few questions about it:
1) I read about a problem with the screen where a hairline crack under the top-layer glass would just randomly appear...how normal is this
2) For retailers, how good is Negri, Expansys and L2D2 in terms of warranty? like in the case of said hairline crack? -I live in the US in case that would affect how they would do warranty
I really really want this stunning looking phone xD I already know about the issues with the color tint and radios but they seem like they could possibly be fixed on the software side so I'm not too worried there. I have no experience with the 3 listed companies and I don't want to plop 500-700 for a phone and be left out in the water y'know?
any and all help/input/opinions will be greatly appreciated.
Okay first, I've never gotten this line once I'm thinking it varies from device to device. And also, what carrier are you on?
the all mighty...AT&T
I tried to get a warranty replacement for the vibrator through Negri Electronics and never got a reply.
No hairline crack. I love this phone and learned to live with the weird vibration. I bought from Negri no problem. Besides the warranty thing... I think I wasn't persistent enough with asking them for a replacement. Either way, it shouldn't take more than once to get their attention, and I'm still a little bummed out about it all.

I know if the screen where to crack on me and they refused me a replacement Id raise hell xD I have the motorola backflip, and while a rock would be a drastic upgrade I decided I would treat myself to a really nice and long lasting phone. Im still a wee bit paranoid about the hairline crack but, who knows. maybe it is just a small number of devices...my heart demands I buy the phone now while my mind tells me to make absolutely sure this wont backfire on me haha
Theres a chance of manufacturing defects with any phone you buy.

you have a point. I mean, I know that there's always a chance of such things but I guess the fact that it dose cost quite a pretty penny and got paranoid when I read about the screen crack that I wanted to find out really just how bad it was. I think I'll make the purchase on my next paycheck and hope that I wont get one that will break so easily lol but it's good to know that Negrie and Expansys offer the 1yr warranty just in case

Thing is, you go to any forum for any new device and you'll see reports of manufacturing defects. You shouldn't be spending your last penny on an unlocked phone for any situation. There will always be a chance you'll buy it and it'll be broken and you won't get a replacement. Just keep it in mind.
If you decide its worth it, then get it!

oh I know I shouldn't spend my last penny on an unlocked phone, I made sure to give myself a good size buffer before I even began thinking about getting it. It ended up being narrowed down to this and the captivate glide but the nexus is just to sexy looking and appealing :3 so yeah...I think with my coming check, I'll be buying myself a nexus! you guys have been a big help
=edit=
one last thing, who dose offer better customer support and the like? Negrie or Expansys? and Im guessing no one has really heard of LD2D xD
the gsm version doesnt really have radio issues, thats the lte version. But i do worry about the screen crack. So far ive been good.
Never heard of a hairline crack but ensquared will also sell you a warranty for the GSM version

I never thought about getting a separate warranty...a surprisingly great idea so easily over looked xD thanks for the tip
My phone is again needing some major repair, and I am fed up with tinkering with it and breaking it further. My 2 options at this point are either spend the $100 and get it replaced through Asurion, or my bro offered to sell me his EVO 3D for $100 and whatever I can sell my Evo for. I do have an upgrade avaiilable, but really dont have extra cash to make a new purchase, plus Sprint can suck it for a new contract any time soon, Im ultimately looking to ditch them once my wife lands a nursing job.
I dont care one bit about any 3d functionality or anything extra from the 3vo, just wondering if there are any roadblocks to consider before making the switch, ie rooting, ROM's etc. I've briefly browsed the 3VO forums a bit, but the first time in a new phone section is always a bit overwhelming for me.
Thanks in advance guys, I am loving my ReLoaded ROM atm and really am hesitant to make the switch.

My phone is out of warranty, because I have had it for a year and a half. A couple of weeks ago, lines appeared on my screen, and I couldn't use it. I sent it into HTC support for a repair diagnosis. Comes back that I need a touch panel replacement. They want me to pay freaking 200$ to replace it. What do you guys think?
Given how hard it is to replace the display, yes. You might be able to find it for less - a quick Google search found offers from $110 to $190, so I don't believe they are cheating you at the price quoted. Yes, the quote is a little higher than average, but it's also being done by HTC, not a high-school kid who has watched a lot of Youtube videos. I would imagine they are going to use genuine components and return the phone to like-new condition as well.
The real question is whether it is worth it or not. For the price of repair, you have a substantial percentage of the cost of a new device. I love my M8, but if I was looking down the barrel of an expensive repair, I'd be saving it for a new device instead.
I agree on all points in the previous response. You can probably find a lower price at a local repair shop, but might only be saving $50 or so. And I've seen some horror stories on these forums of some shops botching such screen replacements. Its not an easy repair to perform, and also easy to damage other components in the process. Its basically a gamble what kind of results a local repair shop will give you. Do they guarantee the phone is in perfect working condition after the repair? What happens if they scratch it up, or damage something in the process?
With HTC, you have a pretty good guarantee that they will do a good job (and with genuine parts, as mentioned).
$200 is a good chunk of cash, for sure. As also stated in the previous post, it might be better spent toward an upgrade. The M8 is a great phone, for sure. But its over 2 years old, and you may be looking for an upgrade soon, anyway.
I'm considering the mi mix 2 but one thing i worry about is replacement parts if anything happens to the phone. So can you get insurance on these just like any other phone?
Use a credit card that provides an extended warranty on purchases.

This is going to vary from each 3rd party that's selling the Mi MIX2.
Basically, the seller handles warranty claims for you,so,additional insurance may not be needed, unless you want damage coverage.
The buyer is usually on the hook for shipping charges on at least sending it in.
Regarding insurance against loss &/or damage, there are 3rd party insurance plans, such as Square Trade & Ascurion:

Her's a list that has a couple other insurers you may be interested in:

I guess i should clarify im talking insurance from damage like a cracked screen or cracked rear ceramic. Ive never really had any problems with something having to file a warranty. I didnt know if since this phone isnt sold in America if it could be insured or not?

Same thing applies from my previous posts, you'll have to do your homework & check out each insurer/3rd party seller.
It's a bit soon to see individual parts for sale on eBay/etc....
so, if this is a major concern, you'll probably want to wait a month or so before diving in.
My guess is that parts will eventually be available considering this is a global phone & a potentially lucrative market for parts dealers/etc.....
Cool. Thanks for the advice and quick responses. Sucks cause i feel like insurance is kind of a waste of money cause ive never had to use it and i pay 12 a month on my s8+ for it. But i know the moment i dont have it ill have a cracked screen

Thought you might be interested in this teardown of the Mix2:

Might be good to bookmark for possible future repairs, perhaps someone local to you could do the screen replacement,if needed.
Still have that matter of parts availability,I'd begin my search on Ali Express/eBay & the like when the time presents itself.
