Soooo slow? - About xda-developers.com

Hi there,
I use lots of forums ranging from this one, buzzdev, sbsh, lakeridge, vijay555 etc...
My concern is with the speed of this site, the loading is so slow that quite often I give up. This is a great shame as I like this site and think that this and buzzdev.net link up well.
However with the current speed of this site I use it very infrequently?
Any plans to switch server?
Darren

THE SITE HAS SLOWED DOWN

What has has happened. The site has slowed down so much it's almost unusable. HELP PLEASE.
I agree...
taking forever to open anything (if it opens at all). Keep getting page cannot be displayed, keep having to refresh page and hope for the best!!
Maybe time for a defrag?
the slowdown has probably something to do with the news about Windows Mobile 2005..
its been slow like this for months. nothing to do with wm2005
strange. yet the ftp seems fast as anything.
This site is really painfully slow. My company is willing to donate a full dedicated server for hosting purposes. Please PM me if you interested.
The site hasn't been accessible for the past 5 hours, and now it's back, it's unusably slow, as it has been for several days. If I didn't have a broadband connection, I'd have long since stopped using the forum.
This does need sorting out. ASAP
Add to that the FTP server gets wiped out, its slowly becoming no fun to post, write in wiki nor answer the cries of help form the comunaty.
Still no answers on this? Been slow for ages - more than once I have done a reply, but the page has timed out and I could not be bothered to re-trype it all. I can't be the only one!!! R
This site feels like its running off a home DSL connection. Its been like this for a year. I ran accross this site in june 2004 and it was super slow back then. I wondered how so many people can post and write with such a slow site. I thoght it was a backbone problem, but I am using a different ISP and different location and its still slow.
WOW!
Something has happened because the site is flying today!
Hope its not just an April's Fool joke

Site Very Slow?

Has anyone else noticed that the site has become very slow? it is taking around a minute or so to load each page and if it has images on the page..... your looking at putting the kettle on before its loaded! LOL
Is the server just having a go slow or is there a prob somewhere along the lines?
Same here, been like it about a week for me
It's working fine for me, the pages are loading at the normal speed.
Site very slow?
Yes the site is very slow.....(((((((
From Rio de Janeiro Brazil.
Yes same here : very very slow almost unusable...
Yes it is painfully slow from here. Unusable !!! really.
Yes the site is _very_ slow from Germany too.
Maybe the server is overloaded by the many users and posts
I experience a few 'periods' where the site is very slow- not just in the last few days. On the whole it's a usable speed.
Suppose that's what you get with a voluntary(?) site with no ads.
Perhaps more donations from users would resolve this issue (says he who hasn't done so himself  )
We know it's too slow. We're working on it. We are currently researching a lot of option, including professionalising what has been a back-burner hobby project. Stay tuned, more news and a longer post about this soon...
I'm having difficulty posting at all now. This seems like a more recent problem than any inherent slowness
V
well if its your host messing you around, then i can arrange some VERY cheap hosting for this site, cheaper than anything you can find!
Speed again ! Great
yeahh!!!
"WILD THING! de de de de, YOU MAKE MY HEART SING!" 8)
What was the problem in the end, Peter? Care to share for the curious ones?

Cryx, our heroic god-like sysadmin, has updated the FreeBSD that sits underneath xda-developers.com and installed something called eAccelerator. (The FreeBSD upgrade brought most of the speed increase, I am told.) All of this is sort of stop-gap though, the way phpBB talks to the MySQL database just doesn't easily scale to the size of this operation.
For the slightly longer run, Cryx has joined our star PHP-programmer Elisa in working on the first preparations for the monster logistical operation of switching board software. All in all we're going to be making some profound changes in the way xda-developers looks, works and feels.
Much more news will follow in January, but the gist is that there will be full-time paid people (not me) on call for xda-developers. The flip-side of that is that we will likely have a moderate amount of non-obtrusive ads in the not too distant future. We're still researching and building it all, so all of this is very fresh thinking.

utorrent :)

Here

A fellow countryman has made this, get it now.
kinda pointless imho
on grps it would take a year to get something big down
and it would cost a big pile of cash
a) It wouldnt if you have something faster, like EDGE or even UMTS/EVDO. Even on GRPS its not that bad for downloading.
b) It wouldnt cost a lot of cash if you have good unlimited dataplan.
well suppose so but what would make that much sense to get directly to ones pda?
of cause one could dl a perfectly legal movie to watch but that movie would run alot better if converted to the resolution of the devices and take up much less space too
not to mention that with turrents others upload from you too
which would mean that having a few people recieving from you
would damage bandwidth alot
since even HSDPA is optimized for download not upload
heck even many normal pc connections have rather poor uploads compared to download and will cut down on download if the uploads begin to reach the connections maximum
HSDPA is no worse the ordinary ADSL in terms of up/down unbalance. And many people leech regardless of their true upload abilities anyway, but with bittorrent you dont get as much download if you dont upload much.
BTW I never had problems watching unconverted videos on my phone. Maybe because I stick mostly to XScale-based devices, so I dont need to waste time on converting more then actually watching
Sometimes its more handy to just put download on phone then leave the whole noisy and powerhungry PC box all night on
Did you guys really RFT article!?
It says "You can start, pause, stop and monitor your downloads, and it also offers some additional info about every Torrent and a couple of settings." and that's it.
Where the hell it says dl to your phone!? AFAIK, it just can't even add a new torrent using that mui.
LOL
honestly I didnt read it
I thought Rudegar have read it and so replied directly to his remark about uselessness of pocket-base torrent client
cool! )))

lol, debating a lost cause...
read what where now ?
lol, we all have diffrent needs...if we all had the same needs, we would need a pda with 4x5 Gb cpu, 2 TB Ram, and 10000 TB storage on our phones to be able to use everything that is out there
I just wanted to point out that its there if anyone would want it
Hi,
the site is inactive now, but i would still like to try this app.
Can anyone share it?
I am more interested in being able to remotely add a new torrent to my utorrent client at home using my kaiser wm6.1
thanks

To upgrade or to wait?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if the people in this forum could help me make up my mind on whether to get the TP2 or to wait for the Fortress?
In particular I was wondering just how much slower the EDGE network would be in real situations, a.k.a. checking the occasional web page and especially how much slower it would be in using logmein? (I seem to remember a few comparisons being done back when the Iphone was restricted to Edge and people saying that there wasn't as much difference as one would think because the bottleneck with web pages tended to be the browser rather than the network speed)
I am a repair technician who spends more time on the road than in the office and if I could have a phone with a decently big screen that would let me do a little light surfing, check my email, and remotely help customers via logmein sometimes without having to get my laptop from the car, boot it up and find a way to connect to the internet I think it would be absolute paradise.
Right now I have an 8525 that has been a very good phone over its lifetime even if I've never run any advanced ROM's on it. It had the stock WM5 when I got it and I upgraded it to the official WM6 from HTC when that came out however most of my playing with it's interface has been with SPB's software and I have to admit that Mobile Shell 3 is a more amazing interface than anything else I've ever seen or heard about elsewhere. Still, my 8525 is getting a bit old and it would be sooo nice to have a bigger screen for the web and logmein.
It's just that every time I read a new release date estimation on the Fortress it seems to get placed further and further in the future (the last one I read said something about Oct/Nov) and I'm beginning to wonder whether I shouldn't just buy the European version for now and then sell that on Ebay when ATT finally gets around to releasing theirs to help defray the cost of the Fortress?
Thus I come back to my original question, has anyone here had any experience surfing the web on the TP2 over EDGE? Or better yet has anyone here tried using logmein from this model phone on ATT's network? How have your experiences in doing either of these been? Is the upgrade worth it for the TP2 or should I really just wait for the Fortress and pray desperately that it is everything that I hope it will be? Well, have a nice day everyone.

I appologize for not noticing the other thread before posting this one however having just read through that thread I don't see any information regarding my primary questions about how much of a difference in experience there is between 3G and Edge in light web browsing and using logmein (and whether the difference would be more a factor of the phone's resources and browser than the actual speed of the network connection). I will post my questions there as well if you think it will get answers though. Again, sorry for not seeing that thread first.

New Servers - Any Difference?

This is really just a test to make sure things are working correctly, but I might as well make a poll.
Huge difference...
Thanks!
Yeah, noticed a massive difference, smoother & faster
mutch better
WOW!!!
wow svetous. These new servers are rather snappy! ive been here for well over 2 years, and this is the fastest I've seen XDA!!!
Great work, it is really fast now! Thanks!
BTW svetius, I've sent you a PM about a news article again (changes at xda, part 2).
Very acceptable speed at present
Still see periodic short lags, but nothing at unacceptable levels. Noticable only really because by comparison some pages are loading very fast.

This seems to be a common issue, even before new servers where in place. Some pages take a while to load, others are really fast in comparison. Worth investigating IMHO
Could be related to external images / ads taking there time to server, or your PC / Browsers performance.
Dave
Wow, much master
not noticed any slowdowns using chromium with an adblocker running.
but a couple of slight ones with opera 10.50 which does load everything, so it may be what Dave suggested, certainly one ad from handtec seems to take a while
Otherwise it's superb! it's like it rolled back 5 years

hmmm, I'll have a look but my addblocker is on and this only appears to happen on XDA at both work and at home
Si...muy bueno
Very good and fast...thumbs up!
Even fast on my 3g connection
Yeah, some difference, not huge but much better
this is awesome. thank you!
Yeah, finally average page loading times compared to many other sites . But nonetheless great work, I like the change that has come here! Thanks a lot svetius, Flar and all the other people, you're awesome!
It's so much better! No more waiting up to 30 seconds just to go to the next page. Nice work!
I was gonna praise them. But all of a sudden, I kept getting 500 Errors as well as 504. Ridiculous.
Must be part of the transition process
Her I got like 20 min of 500 error but now all ok
