THE SITE HAS SLOWED DOWN - About xda-developers.com

What has has happened. The site has slowed down so much it's almost unusable. HELP PLEASE.

I agree...
taking forever to open anything (if it opens at all). Keep getting page cannot be displayed, keep having to refresh page and hope for the best!!
Maybe time for a defrag?

the slowdown has probably something to do with the news about Windows Mobile 2005..

its been slow like this for months. nothing to do with wm2005
strange. yet the ftp seems fast as anything.

This site is really painfully slow. My company is willing to donate a full dedicated server for hosting purposes. Please PM me if you interested.

The site hasn't been accessible for the past 5 hours, and now it's back, it's unusably slow, as it has been for several days. If I didn't have a broadband connection, I'd have long since stopped using the forum.
This does need sorting out. ASAP

Add to that the FTP server gets wiped out, its slowly becoming no fun to post, write in wiki nor answer the cries of help form the comunaty.

Still no answers on this? Been slow for ages - more than once I have done a reply, but the page has timed out and I could not be bothered to re-trype it all. I can't be the only one!!! R

This site feels like its running off a home DSL connection. Its been like this for a year. I ran accross this site in june 2004 and it was super slow back then. I wondered how so many people can post and write with such a slow site. I thoght it was a backbone problem, but I am using a different ISP and different location and its still slow.

WOW!
Something has happened because the site is flying today!
Hope its not just an April's Fool joke

Site Very Slow?

Has anyone else noticed that the site has become very slow? it is taking around a minute or so to load each page and if it has images on the page..... your looking at putting the kettle on before its loaded! LOL
Is the server just having a go slow or is there a prob somewhere along the lines?
Same here, been like it about a week for me
It's working fine for me, the pages are loading at the normal speed.
Site very slow?
Yes the site is very slow.....(((((((
From Rio de Janeiro Brazil.
Yes same here : very very slow almost unusable...
Yes it is painfully slow from here. Unusable !!! really.
Yes the site is _very_ slow from Germany too.
Maybe the server is overloaded by the many users and posts
I experience a few 'periods' where the site is very slow- not just in the last few days. On the whole it's a usable speed.
Suppose that's what you get with a voluntary(?) site with no ads.
Perhaps more donations from users would resolve this issue (says he who hasn't done so himself  )
We know it's too slow. We're working on it. We are currently researching a lot of option, including professionalising what has been a back-burner hobby project. Stay tuned, more news and a longer post about this soon...
I'm having difficulty posting at all now. This seems like a more recent problem than any inherent slowness
V
well if its your host messing you around, then i can arrange some VERY cheap hosting for this site, cheaper than anything you can find!
Speed again ! Great
yeahh!!!

Cryx, our heroic god-like sysadmin, has updated the FreeBSD that sits underneath xda-developers.com and installed something called eAccelerator. (The FreeBSD upgrade brought most of the speed increase, I am told.) All of this is sort of stop-gap though, the way phpBB talks to the MySQL database just doesn't easily scale to the size of this operation.
For the slightly longer run, Cryx has joined our star PHP-programmer Elisa in working on the first preparations for the monster logistical operation of switching board software. All in all we're going to be making some profound changes in the way xda-developers looks, works and feels.
Much more news will follow in January, but the gist is that there will be full-time paid people (not me) on call for xda-developers. The flip-side of that is that we will likely have a moderate amount of non-obtrusive ads in the not too distant future. We're still researching and building it all, so all of this is very fresh thinking.

Website running slow?

Is anyone else experiencing very slow running of this website & forums?
For the last 3 days, it has been taking a really long time for any page to load up (3-5mins). Often they just time out with server not responding. Occasionally however, pages load instantly like they should, but this is very rare!
Last night I was getting "500 - Server Error" pages when trying to view any page in the forum.
I am not getting these problems on any other website, only xda-developers. I need to work out if it is an anomaly with my ISP, or if it is a problem with xda-developers.
I am running on 5.5Mbit ADSL connection in UK with F9 (part of PlusNet). I use OpenDNS as my DNS servers. I've tried multiple computers from two different houses (both F9 though).
Thanks
Mike
Yes in the last couple of days, it is really slow
slow
same here i read somewhere else it maybe because a lot of people are downloading all the roms before they get taken off
it is slow indeed
i noticed the same here.
it is very very slow
Same here from Germany, but perhaps it's just because everyone tries to mirror the FTP-Server with all the ROMs ;-)
Nah, the slowdown started before the MS warning.
True, but sometimes is fast as usual. Especially in the evening (GMT+1)
it's not fast now...
Slow as f***
Slow Site
I agree with the other posts, this site has been running slow since I found out about it about a month ago.
It is really annoying waiting all that time for the pages to load!!
But the information on this site is brilliant and well worth the wait!!
I am not an expert on site speeds but I would put the slow speeds down to the site needing a bigger and faster server.
The Pocket PC market is really taking off now and so more and more people are seeking help and advice about their devices, so the site is bound to run slower than it was set up for.
I would be willing to donate to help speed up the site if the owners purchased a new server, presuming that is the cause of course!
Other great sites to visit are :
coolsmartphone.co.uk
modaco.com
Keep up the good work, but please make the pages load faster!
Snails pace
Here in South Africa it is virtually impossible to get onto the site.
IS THE SITE NOT BEING THROTTLED?
This has only been for the past 3 to 4 days.
Moderators please let us know what's happening
I think is time to dump my HTC products!
one of the server drives died so it has been running solo....plus all the people dowloading.....drive is been replaced.
The fact that the Inquirer.net linked to the forum post about the ROM dump being shut down by MS doesn't help our forum speeds either.. however I've noticed that the number of votes on the petition DOUBLED in just one day -- the response from the community has been quite impressive thus far. Whether or not the petition has had any benefits so far remains to be seen, however I hope for our sake that all this traffic helps out in the long run.
Time will tell.
Sir Lancealot
It's not the "time to drop HTC products".
It's time to find a more sophisticated way to store and share the ROMs, so that stupid crybabies who would call Mommy (Operator) for bleedin' warranty (!) when their XDA gets bricked won't get another chance to screw it up for everybody.
Long live HTC products. Looking for the next Universal like - VGA, WM6 Professional (Phone), GPS, lots of internal Storage so never again "9MB free" on it -- and of course "the King is dead, long live the King" -- you can't stop good work floating around.
Blame HTC not XDA

I don't think you will ever stop people bricking their devices. As long as they understand the risks it's their problem. I do feel that users with bricked devices are stupid to check in for warrantee repairs - Operators should just reject their claims.
I feel that the threat to XDA to remove ROMS will only drive the practise underground and they will loose control forever. I quote the example of the "unlocker" that was removed after a complaint about infringement of rights issue. Well this fix floats around on many sites on the internet and cannot be stopped.
I think that MS and the operators are going to loose their greatest test and development site.
I purchased my TyTn in September in the UK and right from the start it had issues that HTC knew about but continued to sell the devices. THIS TO ME IS THE UNETHICAL AND THE BLAME MUST REST SQUARELY ON THE SHOULDERS OF HTC.
Why can individuals not attemt to correct these faults?
I have waited from end September 2006 for a promised upgrade to correct the problems. I have the correspondence with HTC Europe as proof.

I realize that this is off topic, but I'm with Basil 100%. The bottom line is that XDA Developers is starting to make HTC and M$ look like fools, because this excellent site and its supporters are fixing issues that HTC and M$ should be fixing -- Voice Command 1.6 and BT A2DP are two that are at the top of my list. So rather than welcome this group of brilliant users (what better beta testing can you find anywhere else) and work with us, they'd rather ignore us and get into bed with the carriers/operators who are just as bad.
It shouldn't matter where we bought our devices (I purchased mine in the US from an HTC "distributor") -- these are HTC-designed and manufactured devices running the M$ OS. Therefore they should be fully supported by HTC and M$. As for "bricking" a device, most (all?) warranties state that they only cover incidental damages or issues caused by "normal" use. An operator should return a "bricked" device to the user unrepaired (if it is found to be running a "non-standard" version of the ROM firmware), with a quote for repair/replacement should the user wish to persue the matter further.
I for one hope that the iPhone turns out to be half as good as Steve Jobs says it is/will be, because I think that Apple will make M$ and its OEMs finally wake up and smell the coffee. At least Apple listen to their users and fix their problems (as few as there are) in a timely fashion. On the other hand, maybe I am living in Wonderland with Alice... ;^)

To upgrade or to wait?

Hi everyone, I was wondering if the people in this forum could help me make up my mind on whether to get the TP2 or to wait for the Fortress?
In particular I was wondering just how much slower the EDGE network would be in real situations, a.k.a. checking the occasional web page and especially how much slower it would be in using logmein? (I seem to remember a few comparisons being done back when the Iphone was restricted to Edge and people saying that there wasn't as much difference as one would think because the bottleneck with web pages tended to be the browser rather than the network speed)
I am a repair technician who spends more time on the road than in the office and if I could have a phone with a decently big screen that would let me do a little light surfing, check my email, and remotely help customers via logmein sometimes without having to get my laptop from the car, boot it up and find a way to connect to the internet I think it would be absolute paradise.
Right now I have an 8525 that has been a very good phone over its lifetime even if I've never run any advanced ROM's on it. It had the stock WM5 when I got it and I upgraded it to the official WM6 from HTC when that came out however most of my playing with it's interface has been with SPB's software and I have to admit that Mobile Shell 3 is a more amazing interface than anything else I've ever seen or heard about elsewhere. Still, my 8525 is getting a bit old and it would be sooo nice to have a bigger screen for the web and logmein.
It's just that every time I read a new release date estimation on the Fortress it seems to get placed further and further in the future (the last one I read said something about Oct/Nov) and I'm beginning to wonder whether I shouldn't just buy the European version for now and then sell that on Ebay when ATT finally gets around to releasing theirs to help defray the cost of the Fortress?
Thus I come back to my original question, has anyone here had any experience surfing the web on the TP2 over EDGE? Or better yet has anyone here tried using logmein from this model phone on ATT's network? How have your experiences in doing either of these been? Is the upgrade worth it for the TP2 or should I really just wait for the Fortress and pray desperately that it is everything that I hope it will be? Well, have a nice day everyone.

I appologize for not noticing the other thread before posting this one however having just read through that thread I don't see any information regarding my primary questions about how much of a difference in experience there is between 3G and Edge in light web browsing and using logmein (and whether the difference would be more a factor of the phone's resources and browser than the actual speed of the network connection). I will post my questions there as well if you think it will get answers though. Again, sorry for not seeing that thread first.

Suggestion: Split forum due to server overload?

Im beginning to think that xda-developers.com server(s) is going on their knees. The forum is responding bad and lags sometimes.
I wondering why, and looked further down. A big block of usernames taking up my whole screen seems to be the answer. With about ~6000 users online, I think both the connection, database server and the forum server(s) hardware are going on their maxs, I can just imagine that the server are receiving like 3000-4000 HTTP hits/second in total... And thats pretty high load.
I have a suggestion: Why not split the forum into 2 forums, and the split is done in a way so both forums is about "equally" popular. This means the forum can be split on 2 servers too with separate databases. (Like forum1.xda-developers.com and forum2.xda-developers.com)
So the first forum could have the most popular forums, and the second forum could have the rest.
This to make performance at xda-developers.com better.
Welcome to forums
Why don´t you better do a donation!!
That way owners can manage any overload
We have more than 1 server you know .
Dave
Well it seems bad. Is it because I'm from Kansas and the server is overseas? It can take up to like five or ten seconds for a page to even begin to load.
Strength in Numbers
I think that a forum split wouldn't benefit the xda site as a whole. There are a lot of benefits from working together, and you never know how many rom, stack, or radio problems have been solved from developers looking into issues mentions on other phones and collaborating with other developers. There could be a invaluable amount of networking loss and communication loss between xda-users and providers in splitting the forum into 2 databases.
yeah, well. something must be done though, because the site is responding very slow, and sometimes not at all..

Skyfire

Hello? Is Windows Mobile so Irrelevant that we just don't get Skyfire anymore?
Skyfire is charging iphone customers for what we have been using for years, and yet now we can't use it? I'm pissed. Their servers are overloaded because they pre render the pages, and I understand that, but to simply forget about us is wrong. We didn't pay for it so we don't count anymore?
Are we going to get Skyfire function back? If so, is it going to be intermittent because Apple people jump all over it again?

I'm pretty upset about it too, but seeing as most devs are leaving WM for WP7, I doubt that we'll see this working for us again in the near future. Maybe it'll be working again when they add more servers to cope with the new demand. Only time will tell. I know I've got my fingers crossed.
Petition to bring Skyfire back to WinMo http www ipetitions com/petition/skyfireforwinmo/
Thanks for the link. I don't actually believe it will do anything, but what the hell right?
No one is even upset that ppl are paying for it. I know I would gladly fork over 3 bucks for Skyfire. It's the way they did it. One day we're happy and using and the next day Apple is their new customer. That's just mobile ass rape at its finest if you ask me.
I read a user on here comment some time ago "I will never use a server based browser" in reference to Skyfire. And now I see why. They can decide to drop support whenever they want, and you are completely screwed, and don't even know what is going on.
Interesting, Skyfire became the No. 3 best selling paid app within 5 hours on the Apple app store, before it had to be pulled due to the Skyfire servers being overloaded.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/209765/apple_iphone_users_overwhelm_flashfriendly_app_skyfire.html
Sad to see so many people flocking to what seems to me a developer that does not support it product. I understand WM (at least versions before WP7) is a sinking ship, and a similar thing will likely never happen to the iPhoney. But it seems pretty crappy for a developer to suddenly drop its software apparently without warning or any kind of announcement/communication.
Oh it's completely personal. They rendered 3 quicklinks on my Home Page useless. It doesn't get any more personal. Messing with someone's mobile device is like messing with their woman, or their car. It's just wrong. Send me a dam Email or somethin. Is that too hard?
Wow that's terrible. I've been using OperaMini for some time now since it came out of beta. But I guess some people want flash to work in their browser.
The Uzard browser might be a good replacement:
http://www.uzard.com/en/down/download_windowsmobile.asp
(i also attached a cab)
i think it might have to be installed on the storage card to work.
Skyfire hasn't even bothered to post an announcement on their website. In fact, WM is still listed on their site as being supported, and Skyfire is still on the MS Marketplace. This is terrible communication. I hope they screw iPhone users just like WM users. Unlikely, but if iPhone users are dumb enough to buy into this, then they deserve what's coming to them.

Does this allow the flash player to work, like with skyfire?
I was wondering what happened, since I am getting the servers filled message for the past few days.
So many websites now days require the flash players to work properly, Opera just isn't cutting it anymore.

I tried uZard, and yes, it transcodes Flash content same way that Skyfire did. but it was painfully slow. Even when rendering non-Flash webpages.
SKyfire News Update
For anyone interested, Skyfire announced that they were ending support for WM and Symbian devices at the end of this year. There is talk of offering it again, but for a price this time. It would be a welcome cost, for me, as their 1.x version is more feature rich than the new 2.x version available currently for iPhone users and soon for Blackberry 6, Meego, and WP7. Legacy support will end in about six weeks. Uzard is pretty much the only other option, albeit a crappy one so far. It's still in beta, but hopefully the final product is better than the current version.
R.I.P. Skyfire
You will be missed.

It works really well, doesn't seam to keep cookies, etc, so no trouble having to delete it after use too. Doesn't seam to offer a copy paste feature or selection tool though, if you want to copy some text from a web page.

I assume that we will be left without a flash browser in the next few months. Skyfire left us hangin on for a year without an update before finally tellin WM users they were done with us and if u research u'll find that UZARD has not given us an update in almost a year. The UZARD WEB S & UZARD WEB H they have been showin on their site for 8 month that were gonna be the socalled next updates for WM were never released. My guess is they are takin a page from Skyfires book and was waitin on WP7. I personally do not wanna have to install XDANDROID just to run android apps on WM. I think our best bet is to find someone to port the android version of SKYFIRE if we want to continue using a flash equiped browser on WM or get someone to port FLASH10.1 from android. Maybe someone should start a bounty thread for these android ports.
I allways installed it but never used it. Opera mini is way better
Skyfire is working for me currently. I'm enjoying it while it's available. I would certainly pay for it if they decided to charge for continuing support.

Nope. It stopped working earlier this week for me. They were shutting it off region by region. Everything is expected to go dark for legacy support by 31 December this year.
Hi guys/gals
Hope everyone had a nice X Mas.
I'm still looking for a replacement browser or something so that I can run Flash on my TP2 like I did with Skyfire. Anyone have any solutions besides that Uzard one? That one was just too clunky and slow. I really do not want to upgrade my device because I have come to love the archaic TP2, but not having flash is really a downer.
I didn't notice that they pulled support until some time later. Honestly, I got very frustrated with how slow the "fastest" browser was. It used to be good, but after awhile it just became frustrating. Once I discovered Opera Mobile 10, I almost never used it anymore. (Call me crazy, but Opera Mobile 10 is my favorite mobile browser, I just love the interface and it may not be super-fast but it's not too bad in that respect.) (I never really cared for Opera Mini on anything other than dumbphones-- having to deal with java apps, I think, is kind of a pain. But, that's just a matter of personal taste.)
I briefly used a Nexus S, and I never even bothered to install the Android version of Skyfire on it. It's just my personal opinion that there are better browsers out there. I guess I don't use flash that often, and, honestly, Skyfire didn't do a great job of it anyway. Sometimes it was useful, but usually it was clumsy and difficult.
It had a time that it was a great browser, but it seemed like they reached a point where they stopped listening to what their users wanted. Like the whole giant text thing that never worked consistently. A lot of people on their forum said that they hated it, but they never gave us the option to disable at (at least while I was using it).
That being said... Yeah, they're jackasses for just leaving us high and dry when we were the ones that got them started. I guess they think they're appealing to a wider audience, but when the non-technical users realize that server-side browsing has problems, they'll stop using it, and when those of us that are using WinMo 6.x are finally forced to use Android or WP7... well, I don't know about anybody else, but I sure won't be using their crappy browser, knowing that they're going to turn tail and run at the first sign that they might make a buck elsewhere.
I'm not an enormously technical person, but this is just the way it seems to be to me. In a way it kind of reminds me of how RIM bought Torch and we lost Iris. Not that I would expect RIM to continue to develop a browser for a competitor, but as a user it just sucked when that happened because we lost a pretty good browser. But in that case, at least, we can still download the old cab files and use it, we just won't get updates.
