To upgrade or to wait? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi everyone, I was wondering if the people in this forum could help me make up my mind on whether to get the TP2 or to wait for the Fortress?
In particular I was wondering just how much slower the EDGE network would be in real situations, a.k.a. checking the occasional web page and especially how much slower it would be in using logmein? (I seem to remember a few comparisons being done back when the Iphone was restricted to Edge and people saying that there wasn't as much difference as one would think because the bottleneck with web pages tended to be the browser rather than the network speed)
I am a repair technician who spends more time on the road than in the office and if I could have a phone with a decently big screen that would let me do a little light surfing, check my email, and remotely help customers via logmein sometimes without having to get my laptop from the car, boot it up and find a way to connect to the internet I think it would be absolute paradise.
Right now I have an 8525 that has been a very good phone over its lifetime even if I've never run any advanced ROM's on it. It had the stock WM5 when I got it and I upgraded it to the official WM6 from HTC when that came out however most of my playing with it's interface has been with SPB's software and I have to admit that Mobile Shell 3 is a more amazing interface than anything else I've ever seen or heard about elsewhere. Still, my 8525 is getting a bit old and it would be sooo nice to have a bigger screen for the web and logmein.
It's just that every time I read a new release date estimation on the Fortress it seems to get placed further and further in the future (the last one I read said something about Oct/Nov) and I'm beginning to wonder whether I shouldn't just buy the European version for now and then sell that on Ebay when ATT finally gets around to releasing theirs to help defray the cost of the Fortress?
Thus I come back to my original question, has anyone here had any experience surfing the web on the TP2 over EDGE? Or better yet has anyone here tried using logmein from this model phone on ATT's network? How have your experiences in doing either of these been? Is the upgrade worth it for the TP2 or should I really just wait for the Fortress and pray desperately that it is everything that I hope it will be? Well, have a nice day everyone.

I appologize for not noticing the other thread before posting this one however having just read through that thread I don't see any information regarding my primary questions about how much of a difference in experience there is between 3G and Edge in light web browsing and using logmein (and whether the difference would be more a factor of the phone's resources and browser than the actual speed of the network connection). I will post my questions there as well if you think it will get answers though. Again, sorry for not seeing that thread first.

Meeting with HTC

Hi all
i'm an engineer doing R&D for Leaf Wireless in South Africa. We supply wireless solutions and HTC phones to Africa.
i'm going to Taiwan to meet and recieve training from the HTC engineers from monday the 12th. And since i've received so much help from XDA developers in the past i thought i'd offer.
if there are any customisation questions you have or HTC issues that are proving difficult to solve post them here. i'll ask the guys when i get there and try get some answers.
cheers,
Greg
hmm this thread sounds like it could take off.
i dont think you know what you got yourself into supaspud. i know lots of people are going to have questions and suggestions for htc.
i for one would like to see them implement a wheel mouse not unlike the one in the danger sidekick 3. that would make wm experience 100 times better.
also ask if crossbow will officially be released as an upgrade for the wizard.
when i think of more questions or suggestions ill reply again
?Why don't they make a full size (3.5" or whatever) screen in a cdma with more memory. Hell it doesn't even have to be vga. I use mine as a pda, if I wanted a tiny screen, I'd just get a damn phone.

Save yourself the bother. It would be up to the telco's to decide on releasing an official update and they would then pay HTC to build the rom. Expect that to happen about the same time as the telco's decide to donate all their profits to third world charities.
It's not a telco thing. If you are refering to the companies who re-brand the HTC machines (most of whom are not telcos) the decision will be based mostly on whether HTC will actually supply the ROM and at what cost if any. They would have a fairly good idea about what they are going to do for some machines as they own one such company that retails their machines (Dopod). Find out about possibility of Artemis crossbow ROM if you can
Linux
It would be interesting to get their opinion on Linux on the HTC platform, and whether they would consider contributing to the development of a well rounded Linux based phone environment.
Yes, their opinion on linux would be good to know
Ask if they have any future plans to support it officially.
Ask them what (apart from soldering the chips on and editing the rom file for memory alocation) needs to be done to make 128mb of ram work on UNIVERSAL (it origionally had it, so the motherboard supports it and it can work
Hello Leaf Wireless
Well, well Greg, I thought that Leaf would not come out of the closet.
I have been the source of information till now, but now please take the stage.
A few months back I introduced a few of your staff to the XDA site.
I am now and then fed tit bits of information which I share on the forum. The ROM 1.35 update is a good example.
There are some clever guys here and we can all all learn together.
The problems I raised with Renier was:
1. Storage card getting lost in Media Player
2. Windows 5 is full of unresloved problems, with the BT stack poor.
3. Battery life on 3G is shocking. I have upgraded to 1.27 to see if things improve.
4. I have an Email from Dan Mackie @HTC Eupope stating that an Major ROM upgrade would be released at the end of January 2007, "to resolve all known issues on the TyTN". Nothing has happened yet!
The issue with the storage card was a known issue and I was informed at the end of September that it would be sorted with the next upgrade.
It hasn't happened yet but I have noticed that the TyTN's that you have received do not have this problem.
Please feel free to contact me should you wish.
Enjoy the trip and let me have a copy of the new ROM before you leave.
Regards
A wish list would be for the keyboard have some kind of a lock to prevent it opening when retrieving from the pouch. I find that I often drop call on closing the keyboard.
The magnets in the pouch are also troublesome and cause screen rotation and also dropped calls at times when rotating back.
GPS in the Hermes
What component of software (hardware??) is missing in the Tytn compared to the Trinity to make the GPS work.
Thanks
Francisco
PS. My first post, and I would like to thanks all the excellent XDA-developers community for this great forum.
@SupaSpud: Tell them to produce a Hermes with VGA screen and GPS and 256Mb ROM, RAM....
Thanks.

Several people have already asked this question:
- How can we install 128Mb RAM on Universal?
HTC never replied.
sheesh...
wow... looks like I opened up pandora's box. i'm making a list of all the queries and i'll ask them on monday. keep em coming...
ps: i'll find out bout the rom now.
Hey SSpud - gr8 offer !
1. I''d like you to ask why they dont set the default Bluetooth (a2dp) to Stereo (and the bit rate / max bit rate to 40+) ... and generally fix stereo BT.
2. How do they acvtually work with customers (eg BT in the UK) .... I get the inpression they are extremely slow and unresponsive.
2. Camera - if even cheap sony ericons can have autofocus and macro settings why cant HTC ?
3. Stereo Jacks (3.5 or 2.5mm)
4. Direct access to microSD card
5. When will they update their FAQ's and trouble shooting guides beyond the patronising " check that it is turned on type " answers.
Thanks for this oportunity !!
(I'm especially intersted efor Artemis/ XDA orbit)
Hello 'Spud,
Apart from sorting/mentioning the listed problems here - especially the poor bluetooth stack IMO - please do bump the question regarding their future GPS roadmap for TyTN/Hermes series of phones.
Now that will make a true convergence of technologies.
Kind regards,
Mine is a small and trivial request... could they please please please fix the battery meter on the hermes... the [email protected] +/- 10% drives me nuts... wish we could get the +/- 1% like the other devices.

Tell the guys at HTC to watch the XDA-Developers site to find out what's wrong with their phones and what features are needed to turn them into great devices - remember the IPhone is comming!
Basil
Tell them not to save cents in devices that cost hundred of dollars. For instance they use cheap and weak cpus like samsung (which has only ARMv4T) ot OMAP with it's low clock frequencies. Or they save memory and instead of using 128MB or more RAM! RAM is cheap! I'd like to see smaller touchscreen displays with VGA resolution! Look at the size and resolution of some nokias: E60 or E70. I'd like to see hermes (device with foldable keyboard) with gps, 624MHz intel cpu, 128MB RAM and 2.2 inch touchscreen in the near future!
YES! Tell them about this forum! Tell them not to do stupid things in locking their devices - this simply reduces their markets!
And tell them that maybe it is about time to see their x86 UMPC! Look at the sony vaio UX180P or UX280P!

I'm not exactly sure of what you mean about the wheel mouse. You mean like the one the Artemis has?
As for crossbow going onto the Wizard... i don't think that'll happen. But i'll double check.

Website running slow?

Is anyone else experiencing very slow running of this website & forums?
For the last 3 days, it has been taking a really long time for any page to load up (3-5mins). Often they just time out with server not responding. Occasionally however, pages load instantly like they should, but this is very rare!
Last night I was getting "500 - Server Error" pages when trying to view any page in the forum.
I am not getting these problems on any other website, only xda-developers. I need to work out if it is an anomaly with my ISP, or if it is a problem with xda-developers.
I am running on 5.5Mbit ADSL connection in UK with F9 (part of PlusNet). I use OpenDNS as my DNS servers. I've tried multiple computers from two different houses (both F9 though).
Thanks
Mike
Yes in the last couple of days, it is really slow
slow
same here i read somewhere else it maybe because a lot of people are downloading all the roms before they get taken off
it is slow indeed
i noticed the same here.
it is very very slow
Same here from Germany, but perhaps it's just because everyone tries to mirror the FTP-Server with all the ROMs ;-)
Nah, the slowdown started before the MS warning.
True, but sometimes is fast as usual. Especially in the evening (GMT+1)
it's not fast now...
Slow as f***
Slow Site
I agree with the other posts, this site has been running slow since I found out about it about a month ago.
It is really annoying waiting all that time for the pages to load!!
But the information on this site is brilliant and well worth the wait!!
I am not an expert on site speeds but I would put the slow speeds down to the site needing a bigger and faster server.
The Pocket PC market is really taking off now and so more and more people are seeking help and advice about their devices, so the site is bound to run slower than it was set up for.
I would be willing to donate to help speed up the site if the owners purchased a new server, presuming that is the cause of course!
Other great sites to visit are :
coolsmartphone.co.uk
modaco.com
Keep up the good work, but please make the pages load faster!
Snails pace
Here in South Africa it is virtually impossible to get onto the site.
IS THE SITE NOT BEING THROTTLED?
This has only been for the past 3 to 4 days.
Moderators please let us know what's happening
I think is time to dump my HTC products!
one of the server drives died so it has been running solo....plus all the people dowloading.....drive is been replaced.
The fact that the Inquirer.net linked to the forum post about the ROM dump being shut down by MS doesn't help our forum speeds either.. however I've noticed that the number of votes on the petition DOUBLED in just one day -- the response from the community has been quite impressive thus far. Whether or not the petition has had any benefits so far remains to be seen, however I hope for our sake that all this traffic helps out in the long run.
Time will tell.
Sir Lancealot
It's not the "time to drop HTC products".
It's time to find a more sophisticated way to store and share the ROMs, so that stupid crybabies who would call Mommy (Operator) for bleedin' warranty (!) when their XDA gets bricked won't get another chance to screw it up for everybody.
Long live HTC products. Looking for the next Universal like - VGA, WM6 Professional (Phone), GPS, lots of internal Storage so never again "9MB free" on it -- and of course "the King is dead, long live the King" -- you can't stop good work floating around.
Blame HTC not XDA

I don't think you will ever stop people bricking their devices. As long as they understand the risks it's their problem. I do feel that users with bricked devices are stupid to check in for warrantee repairs - Operators should just reject their claims.
I feel that the threat to XDA to remove ROMS will only drive the practise underground and they will loose control forever. I quote the example of the "unlocker" that was removed after a complaint about infringement of rights issue. Well this fix floats around on many sites on the internet and cannot be stopped.
I think that MS and the operators are going to loose their greatest test and development site.
I purchased my TyTn in September in the UK and right from the start it had issues that HTC knew about but continued to sell the devices. THIS TO ME IS THE UNETHICAL AND THE BLAME MUST REST SQUARELY ON THE SHOULDERS OF HTC.
Why can individuals not attemt to correct these faults?
I have waited from end September 2006 for a promised upgrade to correct the problems. I have the correspondence with HTC Europe as proof.

I realize that this is off topic, but I'm with Basil 100%. The bottom line is that XDA Developers is starting to make HTC and M$ look like fools, because this excellent site and its supporters are fixing issues that HTC and M$ should be fixing -- Voice Command 1.6 and BT A2DP are two that are at the top of my list. So rather than welcome this group of brilliant users (what better beta testing can you find anywhere else) and work with us, they'd rather ignore us and get into bed with the carriers/operators who are just as bad.
It shouldn't matter where we bought our devices (I purchased mine in the US from an HTC "distributor") -- these are HTC-designed and manufactured devices running the M$ OS. Therefore they should be fully supported by HTC and M$. As for "bricking" a device, most (all?) warranties state that they only cover incidental damages or issues caused by "normal" use. An operator should return a "bricked" device to the user unrepaired (if it is found to be running a "non-standard" version of the ROM firmware), with a quote for repair/replacement should the user wish to persue the matter further.
I for one hope that the iPhone turns out to be half as good as Steve Jobs says it is/will be, because I think that Apple will make M$ and its OEMs finally wake up and smell the coffee. At least Apple listen to their users and fix their problems (as few as there are) in a timely fashion. On the other hand, maybe I am living in Wonderland with Alice... ;^)

New Owner with lots of questions....

Hello Forum,
I just bought the 8525 from at&t. I guess I should have waited for the 8925. But, alas, I didn't know that it was coming. It was just time.
I'm totally confused by most of the info here. I checked HTC and at&t for a Windows Mobile 6.0 upgrade. No dice, it seems to me, so where are all the files that say "official" at&t coming from? I want Windows Mobile 6.0 very much, but I don't want to void a warranty less than two weeks into my phone use. at&t's site, says upgrade in Q3, which is now, but I can't find the files or the directions.
I also need feedback on how to get Blackberry Connect 4.0 up and running.
Please don't assume a level of knowledge here. I know what I want, but most of the acronyms here are over my head. HARDSPL7?
My idea state, is using the phone, and surfing with IE and getting hotmail, and the occassional work email on Blackberry Connect.
I'm sure you all will consider me lazy, but after a day of reading most of the posts here on Windows Mobile 6.0 and BBC 4.0. I'm honestly confused.
Thanks in Advance for any rational help.
judging by your time you claim already spent on this site, This place is probably too advanced for you and posting something like this could start a riot. check the wiki (XDA-WIKI link at the top of the page) it will fill you in. there is also a dictionary. I was also in your shoes once, not knowing wtf anything meant, but if you search and read ( a whole friggin lot) you will begin to make sense of everything....
If you are looking for WinMo6 you will have to work hard and read and learn. Anything that is great in life is never obtained easily. Only hard work and dedication can bring greatness....

I posted a thread called Official AT&T Windows Mobile 6 .. use that, since it doesnt require you to be SuperCID... and it is an official AT&T windows mobile 6.. it's just not released yet.
it's here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317339
I use a official HTC WM6 ROM and I find it a great improvement over WM5. Good luck with all the reading and upgrade!!
All went well
I finally got time on Sunday evening to updated my device.
After being a bit scared. It all worked perfectly. Like others have posted, the Device runs a lot better. The bluetooth Headphones, now really work in stereo. Call volume is better and more clear. And so much other software seems to really work.
Thanks for the advice and counse.

HTC Phones: Do they Really Work???

I've owned a couple of these HTC phones, formerly a Cingular/Siemens SX66, and also a small one by Audiovox...can't remember model but WM based, now got a Tmobile Dash.
All based on Windows Mobile, and my question is: HTC PHONES DO THEY REALLY WORK???
In the Forums I read nothing but problems, my experience's not good either. My first SX66 was defective, the replace froze way too often/needed reset (WM froze, CONNECTIVITY was POOR as it was on the Audiovox (I threw it against the wall and smashed to pieces) and STILL IS on the Dash..maybe not as BAD
I want to install a new language support on the Dash....doesn't seem to be possible
I "upgraded" to WM6 but I think I actually lost rather than gained in terms of versatility features and feel...
I'm thinkin of gettin a TyTn....but is it worth the aggravations and headaches, since I'm going to need to unlock and most likely extra language support for text messaging.....Is it possible to Add???
INPUT/OPINIONS WELCOME
THANKS
Sounds like you'd be happier with a iPhone...
Probably I'd be happier....
with an iPhone...if it was a 3rd Gen but still lags behind
BTW in the list I forgot to include the Treo 750....another flop...I've had it for some time and it's a waste
Just out of curiousity, what are you expecting from your phone? So far the dash has handled a lot of what I threw at it.
And yes, HTC phones work...at least as well as WM6 lets them.
I would recommend a title change for this thread. The question "do they really work" is a really stupid one.

Of course you're only going to hear about problems on forums, that's what they're there for: to find answers to your problems. People don't normally spend time praising something they own, there's no need for it.
As far as HTC goes, I have been pretty happy with my Dash. After getting all the nuisances tweaked, I can't picture the phone being much better.
PS - **** the iPhone. Worst device I have ever used.
PPS - I agree with changing the title of this thread. It is silly.
perhaps this is more the OP's speed?
I wouldn't get a Tytn.
I was so happy changing from a tytn to the Excalibur. There's still problems with the stability of WM professional vs WM standard.
Standard seems more robust and usable as a phone.
Also 3G on the tytn although is nice drains the battery.
I used to change phones every six months. The tytn only lasted 3 months before I was fedup with it. The excalibur is a phone which might actually be used for the full 2 year contract.
Well can't understand what's silly about the title, but the question is: 1) As with the "normal" Windows...xp-mill...etc" the OS suckes!!!
Microsoft spends so much money on developing but still SUCKS! keeps freezing and it's very unstable...I had so many fights with my GF because she couldn't hear me while using a "Blue Angel"..."this only happens with your phone...etc"
as for the connection quality these HTC if don't have a GOOD connection you're very likely to be stuck with an UNUSABLE piece of hardware.
I hate when the person next to me 's talking madly and I can't even connect.
Last but not LEAST, I think companies try too hard to limit/direct people's free choice! If there's a contract in force leave free choice how I want to use MY phone, therefore they ought to be HIGHLY CUSTOMIZEABLE...
In other words they only do a GREAT JOB @ screwing you around.
If someone 's satisfied with that, well...their choice...I know I'm not

In Short: Yes they do work
But I have had a HTC Blue Angel (SX66), Faraday (2125), Tornado (sp5m), Wizard (8125), Tytn (8525), Excalibur (dash), Treo 750, Star Trek (8500), Vox (s710), Cavalier (c730). All phone have some issues, but I can tell you seriously they work better than any other phone on the market. And you shouldnt be worried that people complain about them you should be excited that these phones give you the freedom to log onto a website like this in order to solve problems instead of just complain.
I had my cavalier for a month before all of a sudden I just upgraded it with full youtube integration because of this website.
Be happy you have a phone that gives you the ultimate ability to do everything.
Plus HTC knows how to make a phone teh sexy

If your computer freezes or gets blue screens it's 90% of the time your hardware that fails. And if you are so unhappy about windows xp then I suggest you use linux..see what you can make of that.
As far as i'm consurned the Windows mobile phones are quite customizeable as long as you have some sense of what you are doing.

Diamond running windows phone series 7

Hey guyz just check out the video running windows phone series 7 here
http://www.yourmobileblog.com/2010/03/video-of-htc-diamond-running-windows-phone-series-7/
despite its sluggishness, I feel its promising
This could just be a trick performed with remote desktop. Look:
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/03/29/windows-phone-7-series-on-my-htc-hd2/
But who knows, could be the real deal
Hmm. yeah even I thought so when I got a tip off from people at HTCPedia. But this Diamond has really moved us a bit due to certain reasons which we are ofcourse going to discuss..
But I am quite hopeful that be it anything we at XDA will find a solution to it
Obviously fake, you can see where parts of the frame are drawn before others as ALWAYS happens with remote desktop. This would not happen if the phone were simply slow.

pitiful. not having a dig at the person who stared this thread but the numbskull who has to much time on there hands and a crappy cam
