This is really just a test to make sure things are working correctly, but I might as well make a poll.
Huge difference...
Thanks!
Yeah, noticed a massive difference, smoother & faster
mutch better
WOW!!!
wow svetous. These new servers are rather snappy! ive been here for well over 2 years, and this is the fastest I've seen XDA!!!
Great work, it is really fast now! Thanks!
BTW svetius, I've sent you a PM about a news article again (changes at xda, part 2).
Very acceptable speed at present
Still see periodic short lags, but nothing at unacceptable levels. Noticable only really because by comparison some pages are loading very fast.

This seems to be a common issue, even before new servers where in place. Some pages take a while to load, others are really fast in comparison. Worth investigating IMHO
Could be related to external images / ads taking there time to server, or your PC / Browsers performance.
Dave
Wow, much master
not noticed any slowdowns using chromium with an adblocker running.
but a couple of slight ones with opera 10.50 which does load everything, so it may be what Dave suggested, certainly one ad from handtec seems to take a while
Otherwise it's superb! it's like it rolled back 5 years

hmmm, I'll have a look but my addblocker is on and this only appears to happen on XDA at both work and at home
Si...muy bueno
Very good and fast...thumbs up!
Even fast on my 3g connection
Yeah, some difference, not huge but much better
this is awesome. thank you!
Yeah, finally average page loading times compared to many other sites . But nonetheless great work, I like the change that has come here! Thanks a lot svetius, Flar and all the other people, you're awesome!
It's so much better! No more waiting up to 30 seconds just to go to the next page. Nice work!
I was gonna praise them. But all of a sudden, I kept getting 500 Errors as well as 504. Ridiculous.
Must be part of the transition process
Her I got like 20 min of 500 error but now all ok

Has anyone else noticed that the site has become very slow? it is taking around a minute or so to load each page and if it has images on the page..... your looking at putting the kettle on before its loaded! LOL
Is the server just having a go slow or is there a prob somewhere along the lines?
Same here, been like it about a week for me
It's working fine for me, the pages are loading at the normal speed.
Site very slow?
Yes the site is very slow.....(((((((
From Rio de Janeiro Brazil.
Yes same here : very very slow almost unusable...
Yes it is painfully slow from here. Unusable !!! really.
Yes the site is _very_ slow from Germany too.
Maybe the server is overloaded by the many users and posts
I experience a few 'periods' where the site is very slow- not just in the last few days. On the whole it's a usable speed.
Suppose that's what you get with a voluntary(?) site with no ads.
Perhaps more donations from users would resolve this issue (says he who hasn't done so himself  )
We know it's too slow. We're working on it. We are currently researching a lot of option, including professionalising what has been a back-burner hobby project. Stay tuned, more news and a longer post about this soon...
I'm having difficulty posting at all now. This seems like a more recent problem than any inherent slowness
V
well if its your host messing you around, then i can arrange some VERY cheap hosting for this site, cheaper than anything you can find!
Speed again ! Great
yeahh!!!

Cryx, our heroic god-like sysadmin, has updated the FreeBSD that sits underneath xda-developers.com and installed something called eAccelerator. (The FreeBSD upgrade brought most of the speed increase, I am told.) All of this is sort of stop-gap though, the way phpBB talks to the MySQL database just doesn't easily scale to the size of this operation.
For the slightly longer run, Cryx has joined our star PHP-programmer Elisa in working on the first preparations for the monster logistical operation of switching board software. All in all we're going to be making some profound changes in the way xda-developers looks, works and feels.
Much more news will follow in January, but the gist is that there will be full-time paid people (not me) on call for xda-developers. The flip-side of that is that we will likely have a moderate amount of non-obtrusive ads in the not too distant future. We're still researching and building it all, so all of this is very fresh thinking.
Hi all,
First of all allow me to personally apologize for the state that this has been in for too long now. Even with the little time I had, I could have done more. I guess have a problem motivating myself if I know I cannot make something perfect.
Secondly, I have the pleasure of announcing a long-needed and overdue hardware upgrade which happened today and which should have made things much faster for everyone. I certainly notice a dramatic speed increase. More and faster processors are a Good Thing (tm).
Thirdly, and probably most importantly: Since I was so frustrated with being so time-constrained that I was not able to deliver perfection, I have taken the liberty to silently hire someone else to take care of the site full-time. Flar (username "Flar") had her first day at work today. I've had the opportunity to work with her on previous occasions, and I can tell you that she is one capable professional young woman. She'll need a little time to get rolling, but she and I will soon be managing the migration the system to yet better hardware, switching from phpBB to vBulletin, creating a new structure, cleaning up the ftp site and migrating the wiki to Mediawiki. She will then take care of daily moderation of the forums and all the other daily and weekly tasks that go with properly maintaining this site.
Fourthly, we will in future have ads. I don't like ads much, but there's simply no way around it if we want to make this thing rock again. We get quite a bit of money in donations. (Thank You! You pulled us through even when we did not deserve it...). But even if donations were to increase significantly after the upcoming improvements, they will still never pay for the combined costs of hardware, colo, bandwidth and Flar's salary. We will (ofcourse) make sure the ads are never of the in-your-face, moving-over-the-content, audio-at-full-volume kind, and we will most certainly not dare to have ads until the rest of the house is much, much, much more in order than it is now.
For now, feel free to fantasize about what XDA-developers could be, since we will now have both the machine-power and woman-power to do something with these ideas.
Peter Poelman
(who is looking forward to spending some more time with y'all soon)
Thanks for the post, keeping us updated - it is very highly appreciated
I can understand what you mean with finding it hard to get motivated when you know you can't reach the level of perfection that you'd like, so thanks for keeping up the good work anyway

Was wondering why I couldn't log on earlier... This is great now! Thanks Peter!
one word : THANKS
Thank you very much Peter
This really *is* fast now, thanks a lot!
much quicker now !
Thanks
Its a lot quicker, and I don't mind Google ads if you wanna use them I know how painful it is to run a site with no money!
btw, it seems that the database, which had some hickups before, now can't stand the speed of the site. I get frequent phpBB messages about failed DB connections. It only gets annoying when you press the submit button after writing a lot of text
Much faster now and looking forward to the future developments. I'm fairly new but have found this site really valuable and users are very helpful. And welcome to Flar
Why don't you set upa a shop to help keeping up with the costs? You could sell accessories like BT headsets, MMC/SD/memory sticks, extended batteries etc. and of course HTC phones.
I think the people here would prefer to buy at shop.xda-developers.com than anywhere else, especially knowing that it will help to offset the website's costs.
XDA Shop
I most definately agree. I would buy all my stuff from the xda site!!!!
I think I'm starting to get a little moist!
Good job! 8)
I love this site! My wife reckons that i should have married it instead of her (i spend alittle too much time on my laptop).
Welcome to Flar hope you enjoy us
Last thing i agree if you set up shop where we could all go and buy a good lil tiddley bits i would do my shopping here.
But ads are ok and i guess both would be even better from the site's point of view!
Good luck and thanks for the fantastic site!
Great news!
The site is indeed much faster to load
Don't apologize about the ads, try to get as much money as you can to make this site even better
Welcome onboard, Flar
Thanks and great job, Peter
Hi.
Just wanted to say that I personally wouldn't mind a few adds if I know they help to improve and maintain the site. I am sure others will agree.
I am also glad to hear about the upcoming improvements, but a bit worried about switching the system type.
Hope you wouldn't accidentally loose anything from the database or the users listing in the process.
Any way,
Good luck!
This is a great site.
thanks, it's a lot faster now
this is a great resource site and even though i don't like ads, i completely understand the need for them
I purchased a TyTN (T-Mobile Vario II) around six months ago and I was pretty pleased with it. It wasn't perfect (for example, I couldn't re-connect to the Internet without a soft reset) but it was pretty good.
After a lot of hesitation, I upgraded the radio (1.41) and OS (Black 2.5) about a month ago. A couple of days ago I upgraded the OS to Black Shadow. Tonight I added the SMS "fix".
I now believe that I have the best communication device in the world. Seriously. It's wonderful. The functionality is outstanding. I can do almost anything I could possibly want to do with a phone/PDA. E-mail, texting, surfing, phoning, Skyping, gaming, voice recording, reading (Word, PDF), presenting (PowerPoint), photography etc. Did I mention Internet sharing? I can now connect my laptop to the 'Net from almost anywhere in the world.
The only drawbacks that I can see are that it looks a bit like a brick (only because it has a full QWERTY keyboard - which I love), the battery only lasts one day at a time, and it can be a little sluggish at times.
Nothing else comes close and whenever I look for something better I always come away seriously disappointed - and that will include the iPhone when it comes out. We're probably using iPhone v2 (3G, programmable, video calling, Internet sharing, Office compatible, etc.) right now.

Enough people ***** about their phones in these forums. I for one am glad to hear a success story once in a while.
I think it's a great phone, perhaps the best of the last generation, but there are new toys coming out that show incremental improvements in the technology.
But it's the programmers and hackers that really make Windows Mobile devices fly!
And, re "The best communication device in the world?", surely this is the wife's evil glare? Never fails to get the message over to me, tout suite

Although my X01HT is not the best performance device in the world, I think it's the ringt device for me.
I dont have a perfect phone or PDA. Nor do I want one.
Else I will never get to replace a new one every few months!
Yes, it's a great phone!
...but we still need to file that original post under "NooB-gasm"!
Perhaps we could start a special "H-TaCy" thread for these posts.
Just kidding.
You know, in this day and age with so many Prematurely-released feature-rich gadgets, the marketing teams usually win the consumers over and poor tech support kills all the hope of the devices reaching their potential. I've been had by ASUS a few times on PDAs/phones.
It's really nice to have a great group of people like we find here (who are putting in all the grunt work) who can help us GET OUR MONEY'S WORTH (SO RARE THESE DAYS!!), especially on the language-change issues!
_My_ thanks goes out to HTC for making good products and to the FOLKS HERE for making it great! It's quite possible he sort of meant the same thing. When the vibrator stops working, he may one day realize this.

Lol... be nice guys.
I have to say I was quietly smiling to myself when I heard about the Iphone's 3rd party development support - through Safari widgets. Yippee
I've said it before and I'll say it again - the Windows Mobile phones are great because people like the endless genii on this board make them great and customise the hell out of them.
HTC makes nice hardware, and the two together work well. Many OEMs make nice hardware now, look at the Japanese only devices for true innovation. But, Hermes is a nice, stable device. Shame about the GPS, it would have been near perfect (for its generation).
V
Perfect without GPS
Perfect? Well.... Well if it was faster, had 128 MB of storage. Had room for SD and MicroSD (4GB please) and if it had GPS, maybe it would be approaching perfect.
Now Heather Graham is perfect! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001287/
May I have a cookie too?

I agree with some of this... ample RAM and an 800Mhz CPU would suit me. Add GPS and a 5MP camera and it would be my perfect device.
Ohh yeah and a mini projector built into the top of the phone so I could aim it at a wall and project my films so I had a larger view!
I would like the top projector on the device to project on air rather than the wall as well as would like TyTn to perform as a new "surface" where u can just put any bar coded device on its screen and have all the contents sorted out...plus I would also like it to work as a fax and also GPS and so the list goes on and on...
In reality, I use it only for the voice calling and nothing else... and for that my nokia 3100 was perfect with 7 days plus battery life....
Sorry for the rant...
It seems that the forum changed hands and speed!
Thank you for making the forum slow again! I was just getting used with the normal speed.
A lot of changes have been implemented and obviously a period of slow may be necessary while everything is tested & tweaked. New servers are due within the month which should also improve things.
Please be patient during this transition period.
We've been spending countless hours working to improve the performance and reliability of the site. We've managed to hugely reduce the number of 502 gateway errors, plus we've decreased page load times. We've identified some hardware issues with our severs that is limiting the amount of impact we can have, which is why we're transitioning to new servers in a couple of weeks, as Fallen Spartan mentioned. We'll provide updates as we make progress.
Faster XDA
I haven't gotten a 505 in a while, guess the improvements really payed off.
wow! there are changes...the highend stuff is stumbling one over another to replay to a complaint!! ok, i'll keep my cool and wait
Yep, no 505's for some time...that's a good thing Nice work!
i don't have any complaints, and for me i can only say thank you for the upgrades done! keep up the good work, and let us have xda-developers around for at least 10 more years!
who knows, maybe in the future you folks will have a partnership with a mobile manufacturer hehehhe
"buy this device and earn an xda-developers.com registration!" hahaha
Just an interesting topic that I wanted to discuss (I'm sure there have been similar topics). Please, keep the fanboyism to a minimal.. lets try not to argue too much.
So, it's been about a month since Mango was officially released. After the long wait, was it all it was hyped up to be?
In my opinion, yes.. but mainly no. Now, to start things off I should say I have a Focus and this is my first and only smartphone (have had it since March), but I've used others. So on to the topic. Mango, in my opinion, was a great update and brought many needed features. I'm currently left with a phone that runs great, rarely crashes, has a smooth UI, and just plain does its job well. But having used it now for a month, I practically already forget that I'm running mango. It seems like the exact same phone I've had for the past 6 months. Sure, they added some very nice features, but in my opinion nothing huge that I find myself constantly using.
The multi-tasking I find almost completely useless as it's not real multi-task. As developers need to make use of this rather than the phone itself.. and since WP7 developers are generally not too concerned with us, multi-tasking for now is almost non-existent. The only use I've found for this so far is an alarm app which prior to mango I'd been quite frustrated that I couldn't set an alarm and then actually use my phone. Now I can.. but this is something I only use about once a week anyway.
Then there were many other nice features.. the new search features, some better marketplace integration, facebook integration, voice to text. this was all stuff that i was thrilled to mess around with at first and have some fun with. but now, its all stuff that rarely gets used, and while nice to have, didn't really change my phone. I still feel mango, while incredibly polished, is just too far behind it's competitors.
so yes, my answer is kind of confusing. I have a phone that does what it's supposed to do brilliantly, but I don't know.. it's just kind of boring. maybe it's the lack of a good app marketplace, maybe it's just the kid in me. As of now, I feel like next March when I'm due for a new contract, I'll probably go android or iPhone. Now, this is not because I dislike my phone, but because I don't think any of the 3 are worthy of a continuing contract renewal. It just seems to me like each of the three are pretty deficient in once aspect or another. I think it'll be fun to just hop around and try out a different OS each time I get a new phone rather than be a fanboy and miss out on what others have to offer. I definitely think MS has the best base with their UI, but I think it'll be a few years til they're feature and app rich enough to truly be the all around best.
So, what do you guys think? Is mango still blowing you away, or do you find it like me to be just a few nice feature upgrades?
Also even though it was slightly off topic, how many of you switch to different OS's all the time? Do you find yourself more content that way?
Comparing to wp7.0, Mango is a definitely a huge improvement for me. Comparing to other competitors, it's different enough to be a viable option. It's suppose to be boring and does what it does. I think iOS is equally boring, probably more so with less integration, but it does have more apps (which you have to pay). Android is another matter, but because it's not boring and works on all kinds of hardware, it's also not as polished.
Right now I have 3 instances of the same SMS conversation running in the BG. Yep that is just some very intelligent muti tasking. With the way MS has done multitasking its almost useless. Before you'll know it you'll have sms, settings menu, wifi menu running in the BG. I mean seriously is the OS not wise enough to figure that 3 instances of the same conversations should probably not run at the same time? Very idiotic IMO.
Mango is a huge step forward for me, mainly for the ie9 improvements + the office 365 and skydrive integration
IF they fix the multitasking it will be worth while. But as of right now multitasking is complete garbage on wp7.
No. My android sim is throttled and without my DSL hooked up that has pretty much cemented just how much I use the vibrant over the hd7. There is still too much **** I need the second device for, apps, core is functionality, etc. Stuff like transit navigation is a godsend for me on android, and awol on wp7. I had to navigate a new city with Bing maps. Never again will I put myself in that situation. Battery life is also better o the vibrant, which is becoming increasingly important to me these days, since I'm finding myself away from a power source more and more.
Las night after one hour off the charger my hd7 showed 61% and one hour remaining. All I did was browse the web. No music, videos, games or any of that stuff. This phone fives worse battery life than the worse "4g" android phones out there.
alSo I'm so damn tired of misclicking copy when trying to select a word. Its a huge hit to the time it takes me to compose messages. The keyboard is also buggy and randomly closes down on me while typing, which can lead to misclicks and lost text in apps and web pages.
I really need to sim swap, but I'm way too lazy to uncase these devices at the moment :-(

yea I noticed it was useless instantly and its a non feature for me. Its not something I use or think about. Too bad hp couldn't release one full touch 4" WebOS device.
Not only that, but it makes no sense either. Users should be able

To exit apps and long press search should be voice command. Long press home to multitask. Long press back to exit an application. Its like they did it differently (and oddly) just to be different.
And they destroyed the contextual search button, which is laughable ad it wad one of wp7'd selling points.

You're the troll, you constantly bash WP7 and continue to post about how you dislike it but refuse to ditch it. Wouldnt the sane thing to do be to just use the other OS's you have and prefer instead of constantly spreading negativity? And not sure about you, but I dont have any specific goals to accomplish regarding being a good or bad troll. Maybe I should buy an android device and go and constantly post in android forums how much I hate it, wait that would be trolling, wouldnt it?
What you did is flame baiting and trolling. Giving critiques that others disagree with is not trolling. Maybe that's hard for you to see. I thought it was obvious?
Only an idiot would spend $500+ on a device to bash it in a forum, but i guess that's your style. Im not going to validate you with any further responses. You aren't worth my time. I've already posted my on topic opinion in this thread.
Lol @ telling me to short sell my devices and stick to a certain one. Really, do you lack common sense or something, or are you just that desperate to see that people only get one side of the coin on this forum (which is stupid, and unfair). I'm still laughing at that part...

I dont think N8ter is a troll.
He just is not a fanboy, and like me, he uses three differente platforms, so he knows the good and bad of each one.
The bad, worse, the fatal flaw of WP7 for ME (I'm saying my OPINION), it the Multitask. Please, someone slap Belfiore in the face. I'm too far away, otherwise I would do it myself.
What kind of SMARTPHONE that limits the multitask for the last 5 instances lets the system take 3 of those instances to show the same app? "Oh, you could use the back button and close it". So I will have to control every app I open and close? That's not smart.
Worse than that, you have to reload the app each notification you have. Even if the app is in your memory. Oh, yeah! Everybody LOVES waiting. Especially with iOS and Android instant resuming EVERY app.
WP7 is not a system where you can chat with your friends if not by FB and MSN.
"So stop whining and buy an Android/iPhone." Yes, I could do that. But I sould my Nexus S and my iPhone 4 when I had the three, to stay with WP7. I love it. Like to use more than iPhone and even more than Android.
But it could be better, and that's why I'm whining. That non sense multitask makes me mad. And I'm really hoping MS fix that, because it's the best OS out there.
Yeah, I'm thinking Mango was more important for MS and potential customers than user current users. It definitely created a huge buzz for Windows phones and the more polished features make it more attractive for potential customers. But I really don't think it was worth all the obsessive update checking that I (and thousands of others) were doing for weeks leading up to the release.
And it's good to see that there are some non-fanboys here who can give honest criticisms but still use the device as well as others.
just out of curiousity, those of you who use multiple devices.. is it for separate personal/business or just separate plans so you can take advantage of the different OS's?
For me the best thing about Mango is that it finally fixed 3rd party notifications so now my tiles are live and are not just giant icons.
I don't use fb chat/msn because my battery can't take it for too long, twitter integration isn't as good as using a dedicated app, I rarely multitask because many developers haven't updated their apps yet and I'm used to hitting back to get out an app.
So in a nutshell I would answer no as the notification issue should/could have been fixed in a small update. Most importantly, Mango should really be about all these apps that where not possible before and here is the amazing list of worthy apps I downloaded thanks to Mango:

Always, the thing that makes WhatsApp good is free chat and file transfer over data connections like WiFi. Its a boon for people who travel internationally.
I actually like Samsung ChatOn better than WhatsApp. I don't use WhatsApp because they charge iOS .99 and that's it, but want other platforms to pay a subscription. It just isn't fair
