I am coming from pixel 4 xl. I really miss how easy it was to just pick up phone and have it instantly unlock when I look at it.
This fingerprint sensor is horrible! works 2 out of 10 times. I also miss squeezing the phone to summons my assisted. quick tap not working with the case I am using.. Everything else I love. Maybe they can update fingerprint software in the future...
I don't have that much of a problem with the fingerprint reader but I do miss Face Unlock. I come from and S21 Ultra and I also miss not having to press Enter after entering my PIN.
why is Face Unlock not enabled on this?....that doesn't make much sense
It was shown in one of the promotional photos...

Face Unlock on the Pixel 4 XL was too sensitive in my opinion; every time I walked past or moved my face in the phone's direction it would come on. Tbh it's a bit of a relief not having to constantly turn the screen off... And when commuting with a mask on, I find it much easier as well. But I understand that having the choice would be ideal.
I also miss my Faceunlock/Soli combi. Let's hope that Google might bring it back with the P7 / P8 ...
Best thing would still be Fingerprint (backside!) AND faceunlock plus soli and active edge. Maybe... one day...
At worst Google should provide it as an option! cheers

Well, they advertise their phone being super secure with some fancy security firms giving them big industrial thumbs up, that doesn't really work with a cheap 2D knockoff-faceunlock being available. Because of that - I believe - they will never add what people here want, at least not with the P6.
Our best hope are developers that might find some old leftover faceunlock data hidden in the files. At least concerning the leaked marketing material, we know Google at least thought of having faceunlock+fingerprint available - or it was just a mockup about Android 12 in general and it only had the Pixel 6 stock photo as background, and later on they decided NOT to use it, exactly because people might misunderstand that "muh, looks like Pixel 6, must have feature you show!!! mighty LAWSUIT incomin'!".
I completely agree. Someone in another post said it best. Google should've stayed with rear FPR and also left face-unlock. That way you don't need this cheap ass FPR that needs you to first push the power button or have lift to wake activated. It's by far the thing I hate the most about this phone. Cheap assholes
Missing them both as well. I had squeeze set to flashlight and used it a lot for quick access to it.
Yeah same here missing active edge after two years, squeezed phone a number of times then looked at the phone doing nothing, at least no vibrate reminds me this phone does not have it. Face unlock has been annoying for mask wearing but still wish it had it as an option.
The face unlock on the Pixel 4XL is actually why I got rid of the phone. It was constantly setting off the radar detector in my car
Missing it but I'm getting used to the fingerprint. I hope they bring back face unlock even if it's not as secure as the one on the pixel 4

I saw a few hands-on reviews on the OnePlus 5T and they kept talking about this new face unlock feature. Is it just me, or is that already in Android? Settings > Security > Smart Lock > Trusted Face? Or is what the 5T has something different, because it looks just the same.

assuming it's different. the current face unlock just uses the selfie camera. assuming the "new" face unlock is similar to apples with the dot matrix (or whatever the hell they're calling it).
Pixel 1 has it too and it is not that smooth like Fingerprint
Edit:. It requires for pin/password most of times.

It was added back in Android 4.0 ICS
Never stopped using it
It's quick
Just need a bit more practise for the software (scan a few times)
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
It is quick but can be bypassed with a simple picture. I turned it off cause fingerprint is most secure.
Biometric security is ok for convenience, but it is not protected by your rights against self-incrimination.
Only KNOWLEDGE based security offers protection against self-incrimination.
What that means, is if you have anything on your phone that you need to actually keep secure, you can't use face OR fingerprint for unlocking.
Also, apple's face unlock has also been broken.
Contrary to claims of it being virtually impossible for another person's face to unlock it, anyone with a similar face can unlock it, i.e., parent <--> child.
Here is a 10 year old kid who can reliably unlock his mother's phone, and occasionally his father's;
https://www.wired.com/story/10-year-old-face-id-unlocks-mothers-iphone-x/
You can also break it with putty and spray paint.
https://www.wired.com/story/hackers-say-broke-face-id-security/
So don't take theirs as being any more secure, even if the technique is a bit different.
Android has had face unlock for awhile. And with every android version from 4.0 its just gotten better and faster. The reason its so fast on the op5t is because they have it auto unlock the device at the lock screen instead of how the pixel and most phones have you still swipe up even after it verifies your face. The iphone uses a IR tech to read the topography of your face instead of just matching it to a photo of your face.
Face unlock on the pixel is just as fast as the 5t and obviously faster the the iphone x. However, it is not nearly as secure. Some roms/mods allow us to just unlock the device as soon as our face is recognized by using features called "unlock when smart lock is verified" and the such.
One of the best features about face id is notification security, as in it only shows you a notification preview until it detects your face then it shows you the full notification.
Would love to see that on a Pixel. Not hugely secure but handy in day to day use.

I do like that feature too. Would be cool if it was an option with the fingerprint scanner. It would require an extra step to unlock the screen but keep notifications as previews first.
It is different, on the OP5t, it will automatically unlock and go to home screen, on Pixel 2XL, you have to power button, look, and swipe to unlock. I don't know if one is more secure than the other, but the XL does take longer, having to swipe.
My mate and I just tested it with him taking a picture of me on his Xiaomi MI6 and displayed it on his screen. My pixel 2 XL was tricked into thinking it was me and unlocked 3 out of 5 times !

It's been like this since it was introduced in 2011 with Android 4.0. Not very secure at all. I do remember some variations that tried to make it more secure by requiring a blink.

Its not different and 5T definitely does not use dot matrix or any kind of advanced technology regarding Face Unlock.
Why:
Still using my night design Nextbit Robin. Had it since 2017 coming from a Nokia N900 which I only stopped using because community software support was fading. Always found the design to be very beautiful and hard to change phone because I am not a big fan of other phones which are all so big and just look alike.
What:
I am on LineageOS (the latest) primarily. I do not use Google Apps or root. F-Droid and Aurora Store does things for me just fine. Only during the Pokémon GO craze I temporarily switched to OmniROM for microG (OmniROM supported signature spoofing), but besides that the lack of Google Play Services never prevented any other functionality (even bank app works fine).
Using my phone primarily as OTP authenticator, for QR bank payments and occasional messenger things.
Also take pictures to quickly send them to my desktop computer via e-mail.
Issues:
- Recently switched from PIN code to fingerprint and I notice it is very troublesome accepting my fingers (especially after I shower). I have my left thumb configured once, and my right thumb x4 trying to improve it, but still have situations where it fails many times.
- Battery performance. Device seems to randomly shut off when at 50%. I might switch to a slow charger to see if that helps fix the issue, worst case scenario I have to replace battery which seems like a cumbersome process, but thankfully original battery replacements seem to be not that expensive or hard to find.
Yes I do.
In 2018 I got a problem with SIM: it was disappearing randomly. I thought it was a hardware issue and bought Blackberry Priv to be my primary phone. This was at the end of 2018. The battery was also an issue as it was dying fast. So... I've been using Priv from 2019 to 2021 and I liked the keyboard but totally locked bootloader, awful software and extremely slow permanent memory chip made me to but a new battery for Robin, flash Lineage 17 (18 is laggy for now) and now I'm using it again. SIM issues gone btw.
I use mine as a main phone.
For some google apps (esepcially Chrome and Maps) it's not as fast as it used to be but everything else works great.
I don't play games on it though.
After 2,5 year of usage my battery started to let me down and the phone would die around 30%. But then I bought a new battery at Aliexpress and still works like a charm.
For camera I'm using Gcam and I'm satisfied with the results.
For the rom I'm actually still on AICP rom of Android 7.1 but would like to change it soon.
An old tester Robin was dropped into my lap the other week and I'm in love with the design. I put a matte skin and glass screen protector on it and it's now my smart TV remote this thing is so dang charming.

Try to use it as your daily driver, it's even better !
I have been using it since 2018, then a year later phone has stopped charging.
I ordered a new power ic on Ali and continued to use it, but half a year ago I dropped it on the asphalt, which was the reason for buying a new phone.
I really like this phone, but it has a terrible battery and overheats.
Hey all!
I bought the s pen pro for my fold 3. As a pasive pen it works, but i cannot get it to pair for smart bluetooth capabilities even if i press and hold the pairing button. Has someone experienced this? Is there any fix?
had the same issues. had to go into phone settings and type in S Pen... and play around in air action settings.
Thanks...got it. Completwly different to what youtube videos show.
Small tip when messing in s pen settings in air actions you can unpair if the pen is acting up

yea it definitely didnt work straight out the box like the earbuds do
I got lucky and mine paired immediately. Even told me how much battery life it had right out of the box which was 10%.
As soon as I turned mine on, I got a pop-up on my ZF3 to pair it. Then when I switched to SPen mode from Fold mode, I got the same pop-up on my Note 20 Ultra
My s pen pro will not connect to fold 3. It does great with tab s7. I am switching to z fold mode and nothing. My fold does not have any settings for pen or air settings anywhere. Any suggestions? Return pen as defective or is it the crappy Samsung software again? Tried the turn on and Off. It flashes blue. NOTHING. Blue tooth does not see it.
There are instructions that come with the pen, and it was ridiculously easy to pair. However, I'm at a loss finding any use for it, so haven't used it since the day it came (it was free with the Samsung credit). What does everyone use it for? (Gestures are useless to me as I won't remember them.)
You seriously can't remember for gestures that are the exact same in each Direction the only probably used to ever you can't be that brainless not trying to be rude come on the only problem I have is whenever I pulled the pin out I have to reconnect it every time for gestures to work and it's not like I can return the item

How is that not trying to be rude? Yes, I would not be able to remember what the gestures are or are for. Not that my medical records are any of your business, but I have a diagnosed memory disability since my teen years (got accommodations for it in high school). Not everyone has the same abilities you do in life.

Since they dropped almost every new device because of the chip shortage, I wouldn't get my hopes too high. I remember 9to5 making a lot of news about the Pixel Fold, only to have other Tech sites 3 weeks later claim that it's a dead product for now.

1) I run google free. The presence of the "assistant" was the part of the google spyware system that finally convinced me that it was time to get rid of it all. You should be very cautious about allowing anyone to spy on you. Read some George Orwell -- what they are ACTUALLY doing now was at that time seen as an unbelievable overstep.
2) I stopped wearing watches when I got my first cell phone. Why do I need to carry two things that do the same thing? The phone is a lot more convenient since it has a much bigger screen.
The whole idea of a "smart watch" is a gimmick. Don't fall into it.
Google might get into the smart watch game to compete with Apple and Samsung. I mean, it is logical. It is a good move to get into that market. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple starts making electric cars.
Oh good...another half baked device.
As long as I can sideload the Google Assistant to my Galaxy Watch 4 Classic I'd be happy
Maybe find an app that can rebind my HW Keys to replace Bixby too

That would be very frightening. They are not good at things that are complicated. If it happens, I'll be trying to come up with some means of detecting them (i.e. 360 degree visual) and alerting me when one is getting close so I can keep well clear of it.

I wish people could figure out that electric cars are not as "environmentally responsible" as they're made out to be. The reason Musk makes them comes down exclusively to the fact that you can't run an internal combustion engine on Mars. Tesla is a hell of an R&D lab for that.
Hello,
Im thinking of buying a Samsung galaxy fold z 4 for my work in the hospital.
There are two main things I want to be able to do with it:
1-Utilise portable ultrasound using a Clarius Ultrasound scanner which I have and use with iPhone at moment. Could someone please install this free app from App Store "Clarius Ultrasound App",create a free account and load a virtual scanner"demo" in the app and send screenshot in fullscreen mode please of abdominal scan?

I would greatly appreciate it as need to know if it will work for work with the ultrasound scanner I have, You don't need a scanner to view the virtual scanner in the app. the virtual scanner mode is used to show off the scan quality that can be achieved with the device.
I'm concerned I would buy the phone and the image would not work in full screen tablet mode utilising the two screens as one large one to show a larger ultrasound image.
2-Interested in using Microsoft word to annotate daily notes but may just use Galaxy notes.Let me know which is best in terms of handwriting search.
THanks for your help
Here you go.
Interface is a little big but it's working fullscreen.
About the handwriting, Note and Fold use the same system, so you're gonna have exactly the same experience, except with a bigger screen on the Fold, and that you have to keep your S pen in your pocket.

You're welcome !
If your screen is in front of you you don't even see the hinge.
On the side, with a black picture it's barely visible.
Honestly that's really not an issue and you quickly get use to it. The biggest "problem" is with the S pen when you write on it, that's surprising at first.
I come from a Note and I really enjoy it.
