Magisk developer John Wu leaves Apple to join Google on the Android security team
John Wu, better known as topjohnwu, the developer of Magisk, has left Apple to work at Google on the Android security team.
www.xda-developers.com
John Wu, the developer behind Magisk has joined Google's security team, I doubt they would look fondly on him continuing the project, providing a root access on the operating system they seem intent on completely locking down for any 3rd party customisation.
"You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" - Harvey Dent
Well I'm very happy for John Wu but it's a sad day for the Android community.
Hopefully, if they won't allow him to continue it, he can hand the reins on to someone proficient enough to carry on his excellent work, maybe even helping them keep it working.
I know I should be happy for him. But it is hard when I know that Magisk are probably dead from this day..
End of magisk hide yes. He will probably still continue working on magisk core.

Well without magisk hide most apps won't work properly.... So unless there is exposed options it's useless also there was talk of integration into magisk from lsposed root. So maybe the edexposed team will take over
He never said he was quitting or stop developing magisk all he did was joined google security team just because of that doesn't mean he will stop developing magisk so I don't know why u think that but ok

His last related tweet that I can find is from 2 days ago, mentioning that we shouldn't bother him until he has everything sorted out and can update us himself and put our tinfoil hats down.
If you have any other link with news post it here please, otherwise don't go speculating.

That's great and all, but without a source I'll believe it when I see it.
Not saying you're lying, but stating a fact without any sources makes me suspicious by nature as a scientist.

Welp, we'll have to wait and see if someone else takes over the mantle. Just the latest in a long line of talented devs that get the recognition they deserve.
Wish I was smart enough to take over.
I should probably just unroot my phone now and get use to it.

We should be fine for OxygenOS 11, as for 12, probably not. My phone bricked when I tried the same process on the developer preview, although saying that, it did boot the first time with the rooted boot image I had made so, we'll need to wait and see.
Someone else will likely take over Magisk or fork it and continue the work, root access isn't really the issue though, it's the Magisk hide part of it that proved most difficult and, now that John Wu is "batting for the other side", it might be even more difficult.

I agree with this. A12 might be an issue but thats not a concern now.
I've got to be honest, this device was the first time I've rooted in a long time, and frankly, I don't see the need for it anymore. Ad blocking was my sole reason to root, and AdGuard has that handled now.

AdGuard DNS has latency. You're getting routed to some random server and it could be even international.
For this reason the adaway app is far superior. Additionally, it blocks more ads than than adguard does.
Rooting can do so many other things that make the Android experience so much better.

Grack is reporting that holes in Sense have made it ridiculously easy for any app to escalate itself to root. He notes in the post that "both Google and Sprint have been very proactive in plugging this hole." He also notes that, while he will be releasing his rooter tomorrow, he won't be explaining it for a week. This makes me wonder if there's an OTA in the works that will close at least his vulnerability in the meantime.

wow, this sounds like a serious security flaw. i'd prefer not to see a worm or malicious 3rd party app gaining root access through poorly coded HTC sense apps.
dont think it will remove NAND protection of /system in normal android mode.
it will provide an alternate way to achieving root access in normal android mode besides loading Flipz ROM.
wonder if removing all sense related software will remove this exploit?
guess we'll be able to start testing tomorrow...

That's a good point, I guess AOSP 2.1 doesn't have this problem since he says its due to Sprint's additions.
Has HTC / Sprint ever been fast at rolling out an update?
I wouldn't worry, maybe an OTA months down the road, but I wouldn't count on anything within weeks...
The last Sprint phone I had was a RAZR, so I'm a bad source as to their history of timeliness; however, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a different strategy for pushing out a critical security patch than they would for a new system build.
They don't have to rewrite thousands of files against a new trunk build, bounce it between vendors, run extensive Android compatibility suites, etc. It's quite possible they have a few relatively simple changes to make to close grack's hole.
i bet they will patch it when they patch the tethering so that you have to pay for it. some time in july
there will be an update tomorrow. dont know the change log.......
so is it better to root or not to?

Usually I hate resurrected threads, but this one deserves a second look.
At this point should we continue to wait for 2.3 root, or build a time machine to prevent the update from being rolled out?
Actually, yeah, this is definitely something worth looking at.
If the exploit still exists, it might be able to get root for people on the OG Evo 2.3.
Anyone look (like teamwin) look into this yet?

The article author's email address is at the end of the article. I don't know that he runs the blog, but someone keeps deleting my comments. The vulnerability IS NOT FIXED by this update. Armis' vulnerability scanner indicates that my updated Note 8 is still vulnerable.
EDIT: A post to a VZW update thread on Reddit suggests that the Armis app may be providing a false positive. I've emailed Armis with a request for verification and will followup if/when they reply.

Well, I was prompted to install this update on my "SM-N950F/DS" (international variant), and maybe the update you're getting includes some of these changes?

I read about OnePlus getting new people to make a team to work on Open Beta for 9/9Pro.
I like that!
New team is not something to like. It might be good but also be a disaster. Questions should be asked like WHY????? are they getting a new team? What happened to all the revenue they made and how are they using it? Who is controlling the company, One Plus or the Chinese government? Why the delay to begin with. I realized DP1 was developers preview and not beta but why not allow Google updates for DP 2 and three. Who cares that Oxygen was not on it yet. Now that stability been reached with Beta, let's us Early Adopters adopt. I refuse to buy a Google Pixel love my one plus but was so excited that it allowed BL to be unlocked but I feel let down by OP. Perhaps my expectations were unrealistic to begin with

People get married, have kids, no more time to spend on Android. Priorities change. I also think not only priorities of people's lives but also Android itself and the huge slowdown of phone evolution. Actual since smartphone sales slowed companies like apple and Google created smart watches to help increase revenues. They first used the old nostalgic movies like knight rider or James bond to sell them even though Smart watches cannot do anything close to what the movies portrayed. You can make flippable phones but you won't see hologram s coming out of your phone. I know we love to always think of our technology being limitless but that dam law of physics keeps getting in the way. So now they will start with AR glasses with WebView capabilities. And when that fails, which it will because who wants a HUD I'm their line of sight. In 30 years we will events have implants and chips that will help the brain and technology link. Isn't it Neurolink that exists now. That technology is decades away. Because again we do not know how the body/brain will react and now I'm having flashback from the movie Black Mirror.

Oxygen sucks because of google. The more google on it the more bad Oxygen will be.
Also the King of Bloatware, samsung already gets Androis 12.
And OnePlus release 9R or something...
They are starting the ultimate consolidation of Oxygen OS into Color OS. How is OnePlus going to manage all these phones? Do they even have enough staff to manage all these phones?
Unfortunately they only update bi-monthly.
I saw a user suggest on their official forums basically say "hey guys, how about monthly updates like your competition?" in a friendly way, and a mod basically said **** off and closed the thread. I wasn't impressed.
This was my first OnePlus device, maybe my last.
That 12 Beta debacle was ridiculous.
After having the 7, 8, & 9 Pro, I will be leaving the building as well!
Is this a joke? About month last update and now ppl are think this is over. How do u even can survive this life?
I like how people actually think theres a decent alternative to oneplus these days. At least not in the US. Maybe google if the pixel 6 is actually premium/flagship this time. Otherwise theres no other brand with an unlockable bootloader, which is how they get away with so much bloat. Personally im fine of oneplus becomes a little more like the others as long as the hardware is premium and the bootloader is unlockable.
9 Pro is my first and last phone from OP if they can't get they BS sorted out. The phone has horrible battery life, scrolling issues, and it doesn't get better with next updates. Also, wtf is that BS with the bi-monthly update scheudle? A device like this should be fixed ASAP, the users are experiencing problems and neet to wait, the hell is that policy? Would they wait 2 months to release an update if someone would find a security bug too? So stupid. Get your **** together OnePlus.

Lmao you're right though I'm not falling for the hype anymore. It seems they just do it for likes , shares and donations cuz for the like the last few years they'll announced a new version when the next Android os drops then after a build or 2 they go missing again for a whole year or 2 and leave us in the dust I'm good!
yeah i stayed away as its not guaranteed to be updated all the time
my go to custom ROMs are AOSIP or Havoc but neither are developing for P6 I think. But Proton does look like it could be good also.
Agree with the commenters here; Paranoid Android is no longer reputable (and hasn't been in many years). ProtonAOSP, Lineage, AOSIP, and a bunch of other mainstream ROMs will officially support the P6 so it is absolutely not worth messing with PA.
I'd like to add "but" the more developers working on the P6P the better for everyone, even if one group's stuff isn't up to snuff. At least, as long as they share information when appropriate, which the best developers do, in my opinion.

Yeah, development on the P5 was severely lacking but on the P6 and the P6P many more people have it in their hands. Unfortunately, I don't root any longer but I like to see the tweaks and new stuff the devs come up with. (I actually rooted my P5 and loaded a rom before rolling it back before I sent it in for trade-in) Specifically kernel tweaks which are usually drastically needed. Nonetheless, it's a good start as you say.
Hi everyone.
I just noticed that currently there's just one developer (Raghu varma) who's developing for our Hanoip devices; last month i noticed that his XDA threads had been closed by his own request. I searched a little more, and i noticed that many of his other development threads from other devices were also closed (by his request i guess)
Does this means that development for our device are kind of abandoned?
Also, there's a telegram group that publish his roms (and any other from this device, if any) and there aren't new posts since august 27.
Does anyone knows anything? :'s
I don't know, I'm using aosp13 and there are basically no bugs

So...one guy in one device forum...made him stop all development for all devices? Sounds a bit extreme, but...I gotta say, I kinda understand where is he coming from with all this.
Hardware is expensive. Even building on a Google virtual machine costs money. And when you're building multiple ROMs for multiple devices, that means lots and lots of TBs of storage, and a pretty beefy computer so you can finish all that work preferably before New Year's.
Also, I know this kind of people. People who love to just complain about everything. I see them everywhere. And it drives me crazy. It's like nothing is good enough for them. They keep complaining and demanding stuff. And they tend to forget all the work and all the time that goes into this. They just don't appreciate it. I mean, it's not all about the money. Although, as I said, hardware is expensive, and...you do need to eat, once in a while. So...a little something would be really appreciated. But when you're doing it for free, and you don't even get a thank you; instead, you only see complaints and requests and people demanding things to be done in a certain way, in a certain time...you get sick of it pretty fast.
People like this don't care enough to see the good in anything. Everything is trash, everything is not worth anything (even when you get it for free!), so...yeah. The rest of the post has been removed (and I'm sure it was for a good reason), but I can imagine what was probably there before.
So I kinda understand his decision. Development is not easy. And it can be expensive, if you want hardware. So...yeah, when you see people like that who are just not ok with anything, you kinda wanna give up on everything and move on. Cause you feel like nothing is worth your time more than your own life and your own peace of mind.

XDA is in no way a ring for childish fights inherited from external chat groups. If you consider yourself being kanged on XDA, please provide the proofs to our moderation team for investigation. Meanwhile, keep the drama away from xda threads if you can't handle it by PM.
Thank you.

To be honest there is nothing to hide but ultimately the background music with hate is just making me more headache to deal with these few haters. Even though if you look in to my works from last 3 years to till date. I am following my protocol with proper terms & conditions. So just dealing with few new haters in a positive way. On top of it i don't even care about other developers unless they do something to me or some friendship from long but ultimately if you look in to his posts, he himself posting all drama . So better he should surrender with his own scrap. I am out from this so kindly from now i request XDA moderators to ban all these story writers who post racism/criticism/nepotism stories.
By the way the Kang word doesn't even fit to me because ultimately according to GPL my kernel source is always publicly available and you can take that and share to XDA DRT team. Iam ready for it. Most importantly i already told to everyone in all places( inside & outside XDA )as well "if anyone have issues with authorship then come to me, will review and proceed accordingly but if i identify the commit is fishy then i will discard on face" but ultimately few knew only creating drama.
Thanks for your time moderator.
Cheers
