Hey guys, it looks like Verizon is rolling out an update. I clicked to see what was inside but it took me to a broken link. Does anyone know anything about this?

I bit the bullet. This is what I got.
Yeah mine is the same. Can't tell any differences so far. The link for what the update contains was broken, so I have no details. I am sure they will be posted here soon enough though.
Mine just completed. Odd, they updated the kernel with a date of 9/8 but did not push the Sept security patch.

Yup, they used mine as well with no credit either. Boo
Edit: I commented on that Blog
Thanks to you two for that then lol. Can't stand people that pick others stuff and post it taking credit. But anyway thanks for the help... I had no idea what the update was for and just clicked it in a half sleep this morning.
I was reading about that bluebourne vulnerability so glad they covered that. Anyone know who runs that blog?

The article author's email address is at the end of the article. I don't know that he runs the blog, but someone keeps deleting my comments. The vulnerability IS NOT FIXED by this update. Armis' vulnerability scanner indicates that my updated Note 8 is still vulnerable.
EDIT: A post to a VZW update thread on Reddit suggests that the Armis app may be providing a false positive. I've emailed Armis with a request for verification and will followup if/when they reply.

UPDATE: Version 1.04 of Armis' app now correctly reports that VZW Note 8s have been patched to eliminate the vulnerability.

Hey what theme is that?
Well, I was prompted to install this update on my "SM-N950F/DS" (international variant), and maybe the update you're getting includes some of these changes?
I noticed that I can't see the device maintenance option anymore. I was trying to look to see my free ram available
Any way to know if this could effect a potential root exploit or not? I'm always leery of taking updates when I first get a phone that hasn't achieved root yet. Is it safe to install?

This is why I always hold off on every update. Seems as if people are still finding what this update was all about.

Grack is reporting that holes in Sense have made it ridiculously easy for any app to escalate itself to root. He notes in the post that "both Google and Sprint have been very proactive in plugging this hole." He also notes that, while he will be releasing his rooter tomorrow, he won't be explaining it for a week. This makes me wonder if there's an OTA in the works that will close at least his vulnerability in the meantime.

wow, this sounds like a serious security flaw. i'd prefer not to see a worm or malicious 3rd party app gaining root access through poorly coded HTC sense apps.
dont think it will remove NAND protection of /system in normal android mode.
it will provide an alternate way to achieving root access in normal android mode besides loading Flipz ROM.
wonder if removing all sense related software will remove this exploit?
guess we'll be able to start testing tomorrow...

That's a good point, I guess AOSP 2.1 doesn't have this problem since he says its due to Sprint's additions.
Has HTC / Sprint ever been fast at rolling out an update?
I wouldn't worry, maybe an OTA months down the road, but I wouldn't count on anything within weeks...
The last Sprint phone I had was a RAZR, so I'm a bad source as to their history of timeliness; however, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a different strategy for pushing out a critical security patch than they would for a new system build.
They don't have to rewrite thousands of files against a new trunk build, bounce it between vendors, run extensive Android compatibility suites, etc. It's quite possible they have a few relatively simple changes to make to close grack's hole.
i bet they will patch it when they patch the tethering so that you have to pay for it. some time in july
there will be an update tomorrow. dont know the change log.......
so is it better to root or not to?

Usually I hate resurrected threads, but this one deserves a second look.
At this point should we continue to wait for 2.3 root, or build a time machine to prevent the update from being rolled out?
Actually, yeah, this is definitely something worth looking at.
If the exploit still exists, it might be able to get root for people on the OG Evo 2.3.
Anyone look (like teamwin) look into this yet?

Nope, sorry, this was right after the phone was released and long been fixed. All those with the original stock 2.3 are still SOL for now.
Woke up to find funds unavailable and user id couldn't connect.
I reset the google wallet app to see if that would fix it, now i can't re-add my prepaid card.

I was bored enough to try.
When I called they confirmed it was down and they're currently "working on it."
Google Wallet has been down for at least 15 hours now. No response from Google on their Plus page or Twitter.
This is the service that they claim will replace our physical wallets?
1) Even if it was taken down intentionally for maintenance, there should have been a warning beforehand.
2) If this is unexpected downtime, they should've responded within 15 hours. It's a monday for Christ's sake, and I'm not aware of any US public holidays.
I'm going to be submitting this story to the tech blogs, and I hope you do the same. I've stuck by Wallet through all the negative press, but this episode demonstrates with absolute certainty that Google really aren't invested or interested in Google Wallet.

Nothing official but it explains why people had the update downloading and then BOOM gone stuck on 4.4. I've heard that the new update is going out but its going out in small waves.

Looks like they updated the off center watch face issue with a 48T version, instead of the P they announced.
My guess is it restarted the rollout cycle with the update so we'll see a delay if you're at the "didn't get the update originally" end. No point to waste bandwidth for those who hadn't rolled out yet with a dual update. So they recycled the process with the 48T version.
The screen that we don't want to see...

Think we just gotta wait it out. Seems like a new version is coming(at some point)
Strange though, how was a bug of this magnitude(off center watch face) not noticed? Oh well gotta love a quick fix.
Still on 4.4. Heard they have already released another version of lollipop for the 360 that fixes something. And now you know why roll outs are staged. I have no problem waiting for as bug free of a release as possible.
Edit: some people were having an issue with an off center watch face? That's a pretty bad bug.

I was just trying to be helpful and contribute something positive to this thread, which clearly you haven't done. Instead, you started out acting passive aggressive towards myself by belittling my comment and, in turn, contributing only negativity. If you had wanted to be helpful you could have simply said, "Actually there was a report of a soak test yesterday. So it's definitely a soak." And left it at that. Either way, I'm done arguing about this.

Magisk developer John Wu leaves Apple to join Google on the Android security team
John Wu, better known as topjohnwu, the developer of Magisk, has left Apple to work at Google on the Android security team.
www.xda-developers.com
John Wu, the developer behind Magisk has joined Google's security team, I doubt they would look fondly on him continuing the project, providing a root access on the operating system they seem intent on completely locking down for any 3rd party customisation.
"You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" - Harvey Dent
Well I'm very happy for John Wu but it's a sad day for the Android community.
Hopefully, if they won't allow him to continue it, he can hand the reins on to someone proficient enough to carry on his excellent work, maybe even helping them keep it working.
I know I should be happy for him. But it is hard when I know that Magisk are probably dead from this day..

Welp, we'll have to wait and see if someone else takes over the mantle. Just the latest in a long line of talented devs that get the recognition they deserve.
Wish I was smart enough to take over.

We should be fine for OxygenOS 11, as for 12, probably not. My phone bricked when I tried the same process on the developer preview, although saying that, it did boot the first time with the rooted boot image I had made so, we'll need to wait and see.
Someone else will likely take over Magisk or fork it and continue the work, root access isn't really the issue though, it's the Magisk hide part of it that proved most difficult and, now that John Wu is "batting for the other side", it might be even more difficult.

I've got to be honest, this device was the first time I've rooted in a long time, and frankly, I don't see the need for it anymore. Ad blocking was my sole reason to root, and AdGuard has that handled now.

AdGuard DNS has latency. You're getting routed to some random server and it could be even international.
For this reason the adaway app is far superior. Additionally, it blocks more ads than than adguard does.
Rooting can do so many other things that make the Android experience so much better.
