Possible to change from 4GB ram to 6GB ram on Pixel 3XL? - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I'm a Pixel 3 XL user.
Generally speaking, the phone have been doing pretty great, I really enjoy using it. However, there's one major thing that really makes me feel frustrated, which is the "Ram management".
4GB ram is just not enough for handling multiple background apps running, especially when I open the camera, spotify will always get closed automatically. Therefore, I'm just curious is that possible to remove the 4GB ram and replace it with the 6GB ram, just like someone put the LG V10 4GB ram on a Nexus 5X a few years ago.

I doubt whether the RAM on the Pixel 3 can be upgraded. Have you tried the Kirisakura kernel? It has improved memory management compared to stock. As a Pixel 3 owner using this kernel, I have never had application performance issues. Requires ROOT which is less intrusive than changing a memory chip.

Sounds great! So after installing the Kirisakura kernel, could I still install the OTA monthly security updates like before...? Or I have to wait for the kernel update?

is this phone junk

i was planning to buy one of these phones but what ive read it seems like alot of issues with it.any imput would be appreciated
For me, it's the best phone i bought. I had a iphone 4s and the Zenfone 2 rocks.
Fast, great screen, 64gb plus another 64gb micro sd, i love the camera quality. The only downside is the battery size. I wish that it would last longer but right now, it's not a big issue for me.
Definitely a great phone to buy.

Extremely happy with this phone. Battery life could be better but hey, its not that bad
thanks for the replies i just may buy one
I highly recommend getting one

This is a flagship phone with a small price...
There are little problems here and there but that can be said about ALL phones... Battery is always a problem with the newer phones, the higher screen resolution really eats up battery, and the memory leak from Android 5. 0 probably doesn't help. But saying that, we have 4gb of ram that pretty much kicks arse and, when it came out, was the largest amount of ram in a phone...
I be had my 4g/64 model for 3 months and I can honestly say it is a great deal for the price. Very fast and responsive.

hey thank you guys thisnreally helped
Easy to root and by the magic of Linux Deploy I'm running 64-bit ubuntu 15.04 alongside android. I can take notes in emacs while talking on the phone.
I do recommend upgrading to a quick-charge charger wherever you can. I'm having good success with the tronsmart chargers on amazon.

Before my phone went brick, I was not happy with its memory management. I was starting to run slow after a couple of hours of usage, and it didn't help much after killing apps. Is that the memory leak from Android you refer?
I was just using the stock ROM.
thanks
I got the 128 gig version and honestly have not been happier. Battery life is decent, camera is so so, but multi-tasking is really awesome. The UI is a bit bit cartoonish in parts, but with Nova launcher and some judicious changes in Nova/Dev settings (minor), it never lags, never stutters and is the only android phone outside the nexus family, where twitter for android scrolls properly.
It's an incredible device, for its price point. Enough said

What model?
The 551ML 4gb ram model I use has no issues with memory management and seem to power through anything but there was a few people saying their 550ML model was a little piss poor due to the 2gb they have.
If you have the 550ML then you probably aren't going to have anything improve much due to the physical limitations...
Certainly not junk! I only got the 550 (720p, 1.8 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, no NFC and although fast-charging capable, no fast-charger). But even with this cheaper, lower-spec model, and inspite of some software niggles and could-be-better battery life, I am really enjoying this device. Love how it feels in the hand, love the big screen, love how smooth it is to use. It benchmarks on a par with last-gen flagships but I think the Intel SOC actually performs even better than those figures suggest in actual real-life use. A higher mid-range device's power for low-budget device bucks! The camera is very good, not great but way better than it should be considering the price. As I said, there are little niggles and problems and things which could be better, but they all seem very insignificant when you take into consideration the price. The cost performance ratio of this phone is pretty mind-blowing! It is also great that we have an active xda community and plenty of dev support for our device. I enjoy both the stock ASUS experience (tweaked to my satisfaction, naturally) and the CM experience - so much that I have been flitting back and forth from one to the other with regularity. Overall, not a device I'd recommend to luddite noobs who aren't prepared to put some effort in to get it set up right for them, but for anyone who actually knows a little or is prepared to learn it is a fun device and a great value proposition!
I'm very happy with my Z008
Definitely a great phone to buy.

Actually, my cell phone has ressurected today. And I have the rare 551ML with 2gb ram. It has only 400mb of free RAM right after booting up. So, 1.6gb is consumed with "basic" (bloat) stuff. My phone came rooted. I'm trying to stop and uninstall some stuff, but I didn't have much luck yet.
Thanks

Will 2 GB RAM be enough for the Nexus 5x?

Hello. I am debating between the Nexus 5X and 6P. I come from a Galaxy S4. I prefer the size of the Nexus 5X, and I am fine with the Snapdragon 808 and 1080p display, but the 2 GB RAM worries me. I know that 2 GB RAM will be enough for today, but will it be enough 3 years from now? Will it slow down or not be able to get Android version upgrades due to having less RAM? Is Android becoming more demanding of RAM, or less demanding? Is it worth it to get the 6P for the "future proofing"? Am I being paranoid? Thank you.
It will be OK untill next year I think. Still the more ram the merrier, as always. Today 3 gb is ok for skinned oem and I think a barebone nexus takes less ram initially than ex Samsung or LG. My Z5c has two ram and you can't open very many apps before you have to reload, and Sonys ui has less bloat than many others.

RAM on smartphones these days is a completely different beast to just a few years ago. The OS is much better at optimizing and using what is available and works in a different manner to to desktops and laptops.
Have a read:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ram+on+phone
The Nexus 5 is still a well loved and well used device and 2GB ram is not a problem there.
I had no hesitation about the 5X and have come across no issues yet.
I'll tell you what, my S6 edge had 3gb of RAM and the available RAM on that phone is the same as my 5X. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. But if you want to future proof your phone, find one that offers 4gb of RAM and has good development for 3rd party ROMs.
So you think you'll keep the nexus 5x for three years? Also it would get at least 2 major updates so I wouldn't be worried about ram.
One of the reasons i got a 6p and not 5x was the 2GB of ram.. And max 32GB space. My nexus 5 has 2 & 32.. I am almost out of room for files.. And my available ram is 150MB.. I think it was causing slowness i had to constantly close apps. So to answer your question YES it is an issue. I am shocked and disappointed that after 3 years they came out with a device with pretty much the same specs

The storage space is a legit concern, but unused RAM is wasted RAM. If you have 150 MB free of RAM, then 2 GB is more than plenty.
I agree.. But i was starting to experience mini crashes in camera app.. And sluggishness in general.. Closing background apps helped fixed it... So i assume 150 Ram left is not enough
I would say it's fine as long as you don't play RAM hungry games and expect to multi-task (ie. your apps are still loaded after starting the game, your game is still running if you check a couple of other apps). If you do expect to multi-task like this you'll be disappointed.
That 150-300MB free is 'wasted' if you don't have anything else to do on your phone, but if you want to open a 500+ MB game on top of that then things are going to get booted and then the game will get booted if/when you open those things again.
Also even if the phone needs to dump a few small apps when things get full most things like camera or browser or reddit app reload quickly, games can take forever to load so that when I was playing one (Uprising) I was loath to switch away from it in case it would get closed and need to load again.

Is 4GB ram enough?

I'm thinking about finally buying a new phone to replace my old nexus 5x... Pixel 2 XL is definitely on my list, as well as V30.
But I've looked at the speed tests on YouTube from the phonebuff guy and it struck me that all the Android phones with less than 6gb ram struggle greatly with the test in opening all the apps for the second time. For me it's really close to daily usage test and I must say that I notice it more and more switching from different apps. None of the phones with 6gb (oneplus 5, P10, s8+) as well as iPhone 7 / 7 plus had any issues in that manner. On the other hand side I'm not a gamer so not sure whether I will notice that problem at all with a 4Gb phone...
I also don't think that the oreo will bring any improvement (at least it didn't to my 5x).
Not sure what to do now... I'll also wait for the huawei mate 10 and then make a decision...
Any thoughts?

I have a Nexus 5X as well and while 2GB isn't enough in my experience it's just barely not enough. I personally am not concerned at all that 4GB isn't going to be enough.
I had a regular xl and it was really smooth on Oreo. I'm not really worried about 4 gb

If 4GB Ram is enough for Galaxy S8+, which it is, I have one! With all TW nonsense,
it'd surely be enough for Pixel 2/XL devices as well!

Agreed. My Galaxy S8 ran buttery smooth with 4GB RAM, even with the obnoxious amount of bloatware Samsung puts on the phone. I used the S8 as my daily driver for 4 months and never had a hiccup/stutter. So the Pixel 2 XL should be perfectly fine with 4GB RAM.
Oddly enough, my 4 day old LG V30 with 4GB RAM stutters/lags all over the place. However, I truly believe this is due to LG's software needing some significant performance optimization, rather than the phone having 4GB RAM.
I can't wait to get my Pixel 2 XL and turn this V30 back into T-Mobile.
I ran every single app on my phone back to back while setting up my 2XL. I have over 100 apps installed. At one point I needed to go back to play something I had left running on the Xfinity streaming app. When I used the app switcher, it was like I never unloaded the program, and I was something like 20-30 apps deep at that point. It loaded exactly where I left it and exactly where I paused it.
Whatever they're doing with the software is great and 4 gigs seems like more than enough.
On every phone I've owned I'm always most interested in performance so this is great to hear.
I know I'm going to be happy with the screen, I know I'm going to love the camera and I've already held the phone in a verizon store, so I know I love the look and feel. The performance seemed terrific in the store but I couldn't really put it through its paces so thanks for the update.

How is it better? I have OP3 with 6GB and don't notice much of a difference with RAM on Nexus 6P already which has 3GB
I guess it just boggles my mind that 4gb can somehow not be "enough" on a phone today when 4gb can most definitely be "enough" when using a full desktop PC.
And yes I get it.....8gb is preferable on desktop PC's now. I understand. But if you ONLY used a desktop PC for the exact same things you use a phone for, 4gb is not an issue. At all.

Ram Management in 2018

Hi Guys
I was wondering how is the ram management, looking at some videos and post they was all in late 2017, now with a couple of updates and stuff I was wondering how the Pixel XL 2 fares in keeping apps open.
I was thinking of getting the Pixel XL 2 because I enjoy taking photos and the camera is amazing on the Pixel 2, my only grips with it is that I'm a heavy multi-tasker as well.
I've seen videos in 2017 that it struggles to hold 10 or less apps, but I was wondering with kernels and ram tweak, how is everyone with the ram, are apps kept in or reloading?
In my experience, apps do tend to reload but the device is good at reloading back to where you were in the app for the most part.
Running Flash kernel!
As far as I'm concerned, I've not experienced any slowdowns or multitasking issues with my device considering it has "only" 4GB of RAM.
You'll notice app reloads here and there from time to time, but that's not a dealbreaker. The same also occurs on 6GB devices, and even more frequently on an iPhone.
The phone feels very fast anyway, thanks to the very lightweight and bloat-free stock Google firmware. Less bloat = less wasted RAM for useless crap
There's no change, I'm on P and it reloads like hell , ok it opens really fast but it's kinda annoying. On ram management Samsung experience they did a really good job this year, the s8 that I have holds a lot of applications

Shame, I'm on the OnePlus 5T so apps don't even reload after 20 apps open. Tested it just now. Includes 2 games.
But the camera just seems so good on the pixel...
I had ip5t too , really good performance. But no stereo speakers , and the camera are deal breaker to me.

EU version only 4gb Ram

Seems that a EU version of the A50 has only 4gb ram and 128gb model.
Was sort of interested in the a50 but would have certainly liked the extra Ram,
Wonder when this thing hits the UK and what sort of variants will it have then

Yep, processor is important but most processor s these days are adequate enough for most users
The more ram you have though does help performance because it means your phone can hold more apps in memory and bring those apps up quicker when needed,
Software and Ram management plays a role here also,
But your phone will definitely be a nippier better performer all things considered

Yeah I agree , more ram let's you store more apps in memory so that you can open them quickly without the need to load, Software optimizations also play an important role so it varies across different manufacturers according to their software optimizations, Currently all flagships mostly start with 6GB RAM in base variant, so there is no need to worry if you change your phone like every year or two, but if you want to keep it for more than two , you can consider a higher RAM variant.

Hi,
Anyone that has DEVELOPED using JAVA knows that the RAM HEAP is the MOST relevant issue for performance. So 6GB instead of 4GB makes a BIG DIFFERENCE.
