How much difference does 3GB of RAM make?

The Note 3 is rumored to have 3GB of RAM. I believe that is a first for smartphones. But does it actually mean anything for real world performance or is it just for the spec sheet. Are there any use cases where 2GB is not sufficient?

You know, since we do not have any phone with 3GB we really don't know that?
But we can speculate, and 2GB did bring marked difference to the table with more apps that can stay suspended in memory so we can easily come back to them @ later time. Basically, there will be no other bonus beside better multitasking, unless someone figures a way to run 2 systems @ once (for whatever reason that may be) or we get into very advanced gaming (that GPU performance would not allow anyway) with huge framebuffers and AA. To date, I have not found any case where 2GB was not enough, no single app that would eat more than 1GB of ram - supposedly you can write an app that would use all available memory as storage for levels and textures and whatever just to increase smoothness of gameplay, but that would not make it a requirement, only an added option, since the game must be designed to run on some lowest common platform (within reason).
So in a way it will certainly mean "something" for a smoothness, just how much depends on your uses and application developers, for now I don't think you will see any difference from more memory, because it will be dwarfed by faster CPU and GPU speeds.

well ram does make little significant in multitasking and gaming but apart from it there is no much gain as of now 2gb is enough to perform all task and it works great as of now. we rather need more ram demanding games and apps to utilize the power of it, so yes as of now its a co. specs sheet to launch a new smartphone , its future proof but to catch up with it we need a more demanding android platform,games and app.

Samsung are only doing it for the sake of the specs bump. I'm probably going to wait for the Note 4 myself, maybe we will need more ram by then.

You never needed more than 2GB of RAM because the system is optimized to leave certain ammount of free RAM thereby closing applications designated as "unused",which might not be regarded so much unused by us after all.So in my opponion a device with 3GB of RAM will be significantly faster and smoother.

I have more than 1GB of ram free in 90% of the cases so 3GB is overkill for now.

3GB won't really make a huge difference since we already have 2GB memory on our Note2...
I have no money so I guess I'll just wait for Note 5.

When earlier everyone has 1 gb.. people use to say 2 gb wont make any difference.. bt now a days 2 gb is necessary... so i think 3 gb will soon come into action...

The more the merrier!
1 gb was fine but with the s3 it did get hogged up.
2 seems good but its stretching it!

Watch it will make a difference. When we get 4.3 from Sammy our beloved Note 2 will seem to get slower and laggy. With each new firmware update, the files get bigger and also the apps need more memory.
If the rumors are true then I will be the first in line for the new note 3

I had far lesser RAM on my DHD last year and I was contended even if the games load a tad slower compared to higher tier phones.
IMO The huge bump for the RAM is to accommodate a heavier version of any given UI.

I'm trying to save for a lot & house so having a new phone for me might get irrelevant for my needs in my new house. But anyways, Good luck on your future phone

I think right now 3GB of RAM is just future proofing. Nothing ever challenges the Note II's 2GB.
With that said, the more the merrier.

IMO, it will increase performance ..Personally, I need 3 Gb.. I have more than 400 app which all have at least one function I want. I multitask a lot. Moreover, I have more than 10 background running apps Eg. Gmd gesture control, Gmd s pen control, swipepad, swipapp, air control, control center,magic unlock, lmt pie control, ..... Blah blah.
So, if I start to run more other apps, I always got over 90 % of my 2 Gb and I sometimes feel my phone become sluggish though not always .. So 3 Gb will be perfect for me

Samsung might be planning for things to make use of the 3GB .. If they didn't make that much difference, it's always good to have them ^^ with hopefully the snapdragon 800 2.X GHz .. I don't know if it will be worth upgrading from note 2, we'll just wait and see.

I regularly see free RAM drop to under 200MB, though I do have quite a few apps running. I see this more as Android effectively utilising RAM than anything else.
But with RAM being so cheap, why not have more and keep more in memory? Reduce I/O delays and flash wear, reduce battery use, and with higher and higher res screens, app assets will just keep increasing in size (4.3 supports up to 600+ DPI for example).

A year ago 1Gb ram was said to be enough, now 2 Gb is enough so if we are going yo run note 3 for a year then it is going to be enough cz we all know that samsung is going to put a lot of bloat in note 3.

Beside this, sometimes the time will come android being a fat memory wasting pig. But this won't be happening within the next some years.
They will improve stats and will make you believe you need them, so you hang on buying the latest ****.. Over and over again. That's like modern economy works .

Yeah exactly. The specs get bumped to create the impression that your current device is sub par. Even 1gb ram would be enough if Samsung didn't keep adding more and more useless features in every new device. Things like smart pause and s health are totally unnecessary for most people.
The only reason I even run TouchWiz is that the battery life is better than aosp. If it wasn't for that then I'd be totally happy with boring old vanilla Android on my note. This is the first phone I've ever had that I can feel free to use as I please and be confident that it will easily get me through the day and even well into the next.
Yeah the Note 3 may improve on that slightly but it's still not much of a reason to upgrade. Unless it has some miracle feature which significantly changes the way I use my phone, I'll wait for the Note 4 or 5. I just can't see it though. A minor spec bump and a raft of useless bloat just aren't getting me excited.

I was updating my brothers nexus 4...4.3 is a 160 MB OTA update.... almost the size of a full aosp rom. So may be Samsung 4.3 rom is going to be 2gb....

i was planning to buy one of these phones but what ive read it seems like alot of issues with it.any imput would be appreciated

For me, it's the best phone i bought. I had a iphone 4s and the Zenfone 2 rocks.
Fast, great screen, 64gb plus another 64gb micro sd, i love the camera quality. The only downside is the battery size. I wish that it would last longer but right now, it's not a big issue for me.
Definitely a great phone to buy.

This is a flagship phone with a small price...
There are little problems here and there but that can be said about ALL phones... Battery is always a problem with the newer phones, the higher screen resolution really eats up battery, and the memory leak from Android 5. 0 probably doesn't help. But saying that, we have 4gb of ram that pretty much kicks arse and, when it came out, was the largest amount of ram in a phone...

I be had my 4g/64 model for 3 months and I can honestly say it is a great deal for the price. Very fast and responsive.

Easy to root and by the magic of Linux Deploy I'm running 64-bit ubuntu 15.04 alongside android. I can take notes in emacs while talking on the phone.
I do recommend upgrading to a quick-charge charger wherever you can. I'm having good success with the tronsmart chargers on amazon.

Before my phone went brick, I was not happy with its memory management. I was starting to run slow after a couple of hours of usage, and it didn't help much after killing apps. Is that the memory leak from Android you refer?
I was just using the stock ROM.

I got the 128 gig version and honestly have not been happier. Battery life is decent, camera is so so, but multi-tasking is really awesome. The UI is a bit bit cartoonish in parts, but with Nova launcher and some judicious changes in Nova/Dev settings (minor), it never lags, never stutters and is the only android phone outside the nexus family, where twitter for android scrolls properly.
It's an incredible device, for its price point. Enough said

What model?
The 551ML 4gb ram model I use has no issues with memory management and seem to power through anything but there was a few people saying their 550ML model was a little piss poor due to the 2gb they have.
If you have the 550ML then you probably aren't going to have anything improve much due to the physical limitations...

Certainly not junk! I only got the 550 (720p, 1.8 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, no NFC and although fast-charging capable, no fast-charger). But even with this cheaper, lower-spec model, and inspite of some software niggles and could-be-better battery life, I am really enjoying this device. Love how it feels in the hand, love the big screen, love how smooth it is to use. It benchmarks on a par with last-gen flagships but I think the Intel SOC actually performs even better than those figures suggest in actual real-life use. A higher mid-range device's power for low-budget device bucks! The camera is very good, not great but way better than it should be considering the price. As I said, there are little niggles and problems and things which could be better, but they all seem very insignificant when you take into consideration the price. The cost performance ratio of this phone is pretty mind-blowing! It is also great that we have an active xda community and plenty of dev support for our device. I enjoy both the stock ASUS experience (tweaked to my satisfaction, naturally) and the CM experience - so much that I have been flitting back and forth from one to the other with regularity. Overall, not a device I'd recommend to luddite noobs who aren't prepared to put some effort in to get it set up right for them, but for anyone who actually knows a little or is prepared to learn it is a fun device and a great value proposition!

Actually, my cell phone has ressurected today. And I have the rare 551ML with 2gb ram. It has only 400mb of free RAM right after booting up. So, 1.6gb is consumed with "basic" (bloat) stuff. My phone came rooted. I'm trying to stop and uninstall some stuff, but I didn't have much luck yet.

Will 2 GB RAM be enough for the Nexus 5x?

Hello. I am debating between the Nexus 5X and 6P. I come from a Galaxy S4. I prefer the size of the Nexus 5X, and I am fine with the Snapdragon 808 and 1080p display, but the 2 GB RAM worries me. I know that 2 GB RAM will be enough for today, but will it be enough 3 years from now? Will it slow down or not be able to get Android version upgrades due to having less RAM? Is Android becoming more demanding of RAM, or less demanding? Is it worth it to get the 6P for the "future proofing"? Am I being paranoid? Thank you.

It will be OK untill next year I think. Still the more ram the merrier, as always. Today 3 gb is ok for skinned oem and I think a barebone nexus takes less ram initially than ex Samsung or LG. My Z5c has two ram and you can't open very many apps before you have to reload, and Sonys ui has less bloat than many others.

RAM on smartphones these days is a completely different beast to just a few years ago. The OS is much better at optimizing and using what is available and works in a different manner to to desktops and laptops.

The Nexus 5 is still a well loved and well used device and 2GB ram is not a problem there.
I had no hesitation about the 5X and have come across no issues yet.

I'll tell you what, my S6 edge had 3gb of RAM and the available RAM on that phone is the same as my 5X. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. But if you want to future proof your phone, find one that offers 4gb of RAM and has good development for 3rd party ROMs.

So you think you'll keep the nexus 5x for three years? Also it would get at least 2 major updates so I wouldn't be worried about ram.

One of the reasons i got a 6p and not 5x was the 2GB of ram.. And max 32GB space. My nexus 5 has 2 & 32.. I am almost out of room for files.. And my available ram is 150MB.. I think it was causing slowness i had to constantly close apps. So to answer your question YES it is an issue. I am shocked and disappointed that after 3 years they came out with a device with pretty much the same specs

The storage space is a legit concern, but unused RAM is wasted RAM. If you have 150 MB free of RAM, then 2 GB is more than plenty.

I agree.. But i was starting to experience mini crashes in camera app.. And sluggishness in general.. Closing background apps helped fixed it... So i assume 150 Ram left is not enough

I would say it's fine as long as you don't play RAM hungry games and expect to multi-task (ie. your apps are still loaded after starting the game, your game is still running if you check a couple of other apps). If you do expect to multi-task like this you'll be disappointed.
That 150-300MB free is 'wasted' if you don't have anything else to do on your phone, but if you want to open a 500+ MB game on top of that then things are going to get booted and then the game will get booted if/when you open those things again.
Also even if the phone needs to dump a few small apps when things get full most things like camera or browser or reddit app reload quickly, games can take forever to load so that when I was playing one (Uprising) I was loath to switch away from it in case it would get closed and need to load again.

Galaxy Note 7, 4GB ram, bother you?

The phone is top of the line and still only has 4GB ram. Is it bother you? Many other 6GB ram phones out there and cheaper

OP3 and Note 5 both performed the same before and after the ram hack. It doesn't matter as long as Samsung manages it right. Don't fall into the hype of a number.

That's because as Carl Pei explained, 2gb of ram in the OP3 are allocated to the camera only. Doesn't matter what OP3 has though. It is a fact that Note 7 is nothing special and is a waste of money device. Rather go with S7 Edge.

I agree. Samsung took the easy way out. A lot of "leaks" along the way (6gb, Android 7, etc.), but it is a S7 Edge with a stylus.

Everyone knows the Note series is the last S-Series device with Note features. What your saying is no surprise to anyone. 4gb or 6gb doesn't matter I'm getting it at launch. I've owned every flagship and every supposed flagship killer. The Note tops all those imo.

You can get it who cares. We aren't trying to convince you of anything. If it has 3500mah it won't top all any device buddy. So it Still remains the fact that the Note 7 this year is a step backwards and not worth it. Also android 7 comes out in august while note 7 will ship with old android and as you might know it will take them at least 5 months to upgrade

6GB RAM was never leaked, it was assumed since Samsung Manufactured 6GB Ram, which is now in OP3. It was a guess initially which became a leaked spec after sometime. If it's 4GB, Be it 4GB, because my S7 Edge with 4GB never gave up on me.

I don't care about ram size because 4GB should be more than enough. I don't like that they went with smaller battery size on a phone that has bigger screen vs the S7 Edge. That is a no no to me. Also Note 7 users are considered power users so how does that battery fit to the needs of power users? It is not even removable. To each their own though. There are users that absolutely need to have the s-pen like the one that commented above you. They will get the Note 7 no matter what, although I have always had my doubts what exactly is that s-pen so useful for. I mean it is good to have, but it doesn't make much difference anyways. Even if you are an artist or w.e, I doubt you will draw everything on your Note.

Removable Batteries are not coming back.
S-Pen, Especially Screen Off memo on Note 5 got me used to it and It became quite an important tool.

I've used the Note Series since the Note 3, went through Note 4 and Note 5 and loved every minute of it. I stepped onto the S7 Edge, seduced by those curves, and thought I'd enjoy the slimmer footprint. I've been pretty happy with the S7 Edge, but I miss my S pen a ton. Which is why I'll be picking up the Note7 asap. I felt like the 4gb RAM in the Note5 was plenty with the exynos processor. The S7 Edge I feel has some slowdowns and multitasking issues with snapdragon. (This is why I secretly hope the US versions have exynos instead of snapdragon again like the Note5 did.)
That said, do we have any definitive evidence that these devices will be using exynos 8893, Snapdragon 820 or Snapdragon 821? That is what I'm more concerned about. 4GB of ram is plenty assuming the OS is optimized for it, and the storage solution on the device is fast.
Other side notes; when I first got the Note 3, people still looked at me funny because of the large size, but now everyone with their iphone 6 plus make the note series seem small in comparison. Now that big phones are in, I feel even more comfortable going for the Note7
Also, I already have my Spigen Note7 Case as of last saturday, so I'm excited to get this thing ordered. (Here's to hoping for a free GearVR or Fit and another year of netflix and samsung pay bonuses as well. (I'm pretty sure I made money selling my note4 and moving to my Note5.)

Interesting article. The note series was always a major step above the S series up until the note 5 fwiw.

4 gigs of ram is how much my 2011 Toshiba laptop has, it's all about how it feels in your hand, you can compare vehicles the same with horsepower but when it comes down to it you have to like the phone. Making a decision or judgement before you yourself have used the device for a day or week is most likely not going to be accurate. Go try it see if you like it. I'll bet it's faster than you think. Also remember samsung note series is much more mature than the plus phones out there. All other phones are following the note for its size 6 years of high end tech vs 1 year for the others look at the bending iPhone plus. Make sure you look at all of the differences not just the ones companies tout.

Got it already, The new UI, and the Menu's are awesome. Smaller DPI, just as I always liked it.

How does the Edge compare to note Edge in terms of functionality?
For example - Is it an independent second screen? Can it be made one icon thick, so it doesn't cover main screen?

Worth Upgrading from Note 5 to Note 7

Want to know if it is worth upgrading from the note 5 to note 7? If so Why??

In my opinion it's not worth it.. Almost same design. I think the battery will not be better too. The only pro thing is that the note 7 is waterproof.

Yes.
Edge screen looks nice and futuristic and clearly is the way to go for Samsung flagships moving forward.
Waterpoof.
Much better cameras.
Easier to hold one-handed.
Design so much better, very compact for a 5.7" screen phone.
Better battery.
USB type C.
Iris scanner not needed but still cool.
Micro SD card support with the possibility of using it as adoptable storage.
Only downside is it's expensive.

Forgot to mention that you can also set the screen to 1080p to save substantial battery life if you can't really see the difference between it and 4k. You can even set to 720p if you want.

I feel like the note 5 and S6 were a step in the right direction design wise, and still have great features when it comes to the hardware. If you don't plan on getting your phone wet and have enough internal storage then I wouldn't upgrade. If you like to store a lot on your phone that's the only reason I would upgrade if I were you. Otherwise the camera is still top of the line, the fingerprint scanner is fast& secure, and the phone still has the premium look and feel.

Yes for the sd card slot if nothing else.

I am still on a note 3 so for me it's a no brainer.but someone with a 5 they should wait unless you really need the SD card.

I will buy (as n5 battery is its weakest feature) but depending on what the v20 delivers I may well sell it soon after!

4k? I thought it was 1440! But anyway imo it's not worth it at all. What do you gain? Do you have a problem with note 5? If it's performance related note 7 is likely the same or if it's thr purple smudge

Yes, what I meant was 2k, not 4k, lol.
No purple smudge on my Note5. No real problem with Note5 except the very limited 32gb storage, which I obviously knew about before buying. I thought it was going to be enough, I was wrong.

I actually made a thread although now i regret it because I thought the phone is released but it seems it's still not out yet! But they said the same thing about note 4 and ot does have it. Are you sure? Have you checked in gallery? Maybe the picture you check is bright! How about lag or delays. When you compare it next to a nexus or an iPhone.is it smooth?

Yea my pretty sure my Note5 doesn't have that issue.
About lag, are you asking about the Note7? With my brief time with it in the store, I can say there aren't any lags but of course it may be different when we're actually using it as our own.

To put it in perspective, what motivation will Nexus 6P owners have to upgrade to the 2016 version? It'll have generationally better h/w but what else? Especially considering the OS is/was/will be the same on both devices. Hardware and software has matured so the generational differences between devices get smaller each year. Unless you're a big gamer what apps are going to be noticeably faster between Exynos 7420 and 8890 or Snapdragon 810 and 820? If you want a Note7 and feel like spending the money, get it. If not I'm guessing 90% of what you do on your phone would perform just as well on a Note5. I've personally given up on rationalizing getting a new phone every year. I just chalk it up to a whim because I like the latest and greatest.

Me also.
Nothing to rationize really, if I want a new device i buy one its not like I need to make a list of pluses and minuses or try to justify it..thats ridiculous its a phone not a car. Not a really major expense lol.
In this particular case though for me going from note 5 i do really want the SD support the 7 offers.

I gave up on the note 5 along time ago mainly because of the poor battery life, I went to the s7e and battery is much better. I really like the s7e but will be getting a note 7 as soon as it's out to test the loser will be the back up phone

I upgraded from Note 5 to Note 7 couple of days ago. I am very fond of the Note 7, except the external speaker audio quality. It so high pitched and lacks bass. Note 5 sound is waaaay better and louder

Thats due to the water resistance likely, which for myself is pointless as i am not stupid enough to use my device in a wet enviroment.
I would much rather ditch that and have far better audio quality. Personal preference of course and others seem to find the water resistance important
If the audio is that bad it would be a deal breaker for me and i will send it back.

This sort of question is THE most common on all forum brands. The answer is yes and no. In other words some will upgrade while others are still happily using the note 1. It is a very personal issue and one only you can answer.
