Google Pixel 2 XL DVT Models - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hey, So I got my hands on some Google Pixel 2 XL devices (actually 8) which were shipped here on 29th of August 2017 (Pixel 2 XL released on first week of Oct 2017)These devices are up for auctions by the Customs department here and I'am thinking to buy them however I have some doubts regarding the DVT sticker and "Not for Sale" marking on back-panel. I have some pics from inspection. It would be really great if you could help me out in buying decision.
My main doubts are:
1. Can build no. be changed after a normal update ? (i guess yes, but still looking for a sure answer)
2. Will it be a good deal to get them at 40% of the present retail price ? (I mean will people would like to own a Pixel 2 XL @ 40 to 50% discounted rate, 'cause "Not for Sale" is mentioned on back-panel)
Looking forward that community members will help.

The "Not For Sale" item on the back is a red flag. It tells me these are engineering samples. The software in an engineering sample is rarely finished and of beta quality. Worse, the bootloader may be locked, something Verizon owners are all too familiar with. The engineering sample bootloader however isn't a Verizon device and ignores any and all attempts to unlock it.
Google may have changed its development practices and these could be something else, but I would be wary regardless.

Thanks for your reply . Initially I too had same doubts and after checking about word "DVT" I found it stands for "Design Validation Testing" and it's one step before Mass Production for consumers. And also noticing the date of shipment which is 29th Aug 2017 (almost 35 days before official launch) I don't think there would be any hardware differences.
however one thing I would really like to know is Build No. I mean can we change that through a normal update ?

Now, in answer to your question, probably not. The software here is a pre-release version of Android 8.0, as noted by the build number. From past experience with people who have come across these devices thinking they got a good deal, what usually happens is they attempt to update the device and it fails. Where these devices are intended for testing the software, Google locks down the device so that only testing images can be loaded. Unlocking the bootloader will not be possible, and Verizon owners know all about that, but this will be worse. The option to allow OEM Unlocking will most likely be grayed out.
Unless you don't care about unlocking the device and never seeing an update of any kind, this is not a good deal. Not when you can go to Swappa and purchase a production model that has potentially been used even less than these units.

I do something similar for the Dept of Defense as far as testing weapons systems, software, etc. and if these units are indeed test validation units, they have been stressed in super heated, super cold, harsh environmental conditions, attempts to overcharge the battery, leave it plugged in during heavy use, overheating the CPUs, and a ton of other tests that validate it's consumer usability.
Basically, these units, if test validation pieces, have been abused both physically and software to represent the worst use the average consumer would put them through.
With some of our software testing, earlier versions are unable to be overwritten, or updated via conventional methods because it is still under testing. IF these units are similar, they might be stuck on whatever OS is currently on them.
If they are being sold AS IS, or you can verify they are actually TEST units, I'd put my money somewhere else.
Just my .02.
Good luck!
If it were me, I wouldn't risk ANY funding I wasn't willing to lose on these. With some

thanks for stopping by and putting forward your views.
How about investing 1/4th of the retail price on a single device ? and btw Build No. is "taimen-userdebug 8.0.0 OPD1.170816.007" (in case you could offer some more help)

If it were me, I would stop at Verification Test Device.
Only you can determine whether you're willing to risk how ever much 25% would total.
Especially if you don't know that you can sell these as upgradable, unlockable, or if they even have all the final release apps and features installed.
Since you asked, my advice is: walk away save your $ for another venture that has more reliable resale and profit tied to it. Way too many IFs and unknowns with these devices in my opinion.

Mi Band: Xiaomi's fitness smart wristband

I'm not sure whether the right forum to post this thread.
Does anybody know about the new wristband that Xiaomi launched yesterday?

You won't see any screen on it, even no LED screen to show the time.
But it doesn't mean Mi Band is bland or worthless. I think it's quite powerful.:good:
- Unlock your phone via bluetooth without passcode (using BLE)
- Fitness monitor: track various health metrics and sync with your phone
- Sleep tracker and smart alarm: vibrate to wake you up during light sleep
- Notification: vibrate and flicker when you receive a new SMS or call
- Waterproof with the rating of IP67: you can wear it when showering
- 30 days standby when full charged
And the most awesome thing is, it's very cheap: only $13! It must be one of the cheapest smart band on the market.
But there are some cons:
No screen. However this makes the battery life longer.
It's only compatible with Mi 3 or Mi 4 with Android 4.4 based MIUI (It's the worst thing! )
Any ideas about Mi Band? Will you buy one if you had a Mi 3 or Mi 4?
Useful additions for Mi Band
Unlock and call reminder features are only for Xiaomi phones, is that right?
And how about whole wristband, does it work work on "normal" Android phone? My common sense telling me that it should - there is no restriction, it is just a bluetooth transmission. But maybe I'm wrong?
This looks brilliant. I was actually researching BLE technology and considering making something like this to unlock my phone. Seems I don't have to, at least if Xiaomi makes it support other devices.

I think it should work on other Android phones, but it couldn't, Even the older Xiaomi phone's like Mi 2S is not compatible.
Xiaomi is too "closed" now. Xiaomi will lose many potential customers if they keep doing that.

Yeah...I hope the next generation (Mi Band 2?) can support more devices.
Xiaomi is following Sammy's footstep, trying to get new customers by releasing phone specific gadgets. The only difference with Gear - that one got rooted, but with something as simple as smartband - most likely it will be locked to their phone. The same as they announced before about release of MI pressy-clones. Also, you have to realize that $13 is heavily subsidized price, they are giving it away at the cost or maybe below the cost, just so they can get new MI customers. Similar to what Amazon does with their tablets (hoping to get more Amazon shopping customers) or Google did with Nexus 7 (trying to jump start Android tablet business to take away share from iOS).

I heard a rumor that the cost of Mi Band is only CN„ 49 (about $8.5)
i think in europe it will cost triple
where have people pre-ordered this from?
It starting to show up on websites that sell xiaomi and even aliexpress (although the price is higher than announced, but still a good deal considering).
Im just wondering, this does work with other android phones or just with xiaomi? Anyone knows yet? Its still new, so there probably isn't much info on that yet

HTCMania discussed in that it can be used with any Android, a user has been tested with a Nexus5 ... I have installed the apk without problems, but this in Chino, hopefully soon be translated into Spanish or English.
They have the apk file, but being new I can not put link.
Good to know!
We will probably start seeing more development on these as they start to get to more people.
But the function that it was to unlock/remove pin or pattern when you grab the phone/close to the hand with the bracelet probably won't work, right? Unless someone comes out with an android mod that will allow that.
Still, as a fitness tracker you can't beat the price
When in stock?

My Samsung Galaxy Note7 was manufactured in Vietnam on August 26th? I got the Note7 from Three UK, does that mean I am unaffected?
Seems dubious to me could be wrong but why single out one supplier (ebay seller?) bad wording errors if that was the case then why is it not posted on Samsung's sites.

Well, could be any number of reasons, maybe it just got released internally?, no idea. It does makes more sense to me that those devices affected can be identified by some sort of triage, rather than recalling all devices (which semed odd since the start). I followed the QR code and it des link to samsung website. I am not saying that this is 100% true, but it does make sense. Posted this to stop the massive Note 7 abuse before someone may regret it
I agree, this is a badly written letter and looks completely fake.
.
I am not convinced quite yet.
It's badly written because it's written by Asians? Perhaps?
I am Asian by the way. And this is fine. I've seen far worse letters than this.

I don't disagree.
However, I'd wait for tomorrow. It's the weekends here, so I'll look out for Monday for any kind of announcement.
I would really hope that this company wouldn't fake an internal letter like this. I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung took a faked letter like this extremely seriously considering the circumstances. So I'm on the fence in this one but really hope someone wouldn't take that chance. It has a customer number on it. Someone could easily call Samsung and get this verified.
Sent from my SM-N930F using Tapatalk
Fake. There is no chance they would publicly announce a world wide recall, then a day later say 'Oops, we mean world wide recall. Except for this batch of phones. Our bad.' If they where wrong about that batch of phones they would get crucified. Nope, that seller just doesn't want to deal with the headache of returning all the units they sold, and returning all that money.
So if you bought from this seller you stuck with the phone you have or file a case with eBay and get your money back since you're within 30day eBay return policy and buy another device when they are fixed. That's your only two choices.
Sent from my SM-N930F using Tapatalk
My UK Note7 pre-order was canceled on the 1st Sept, so I'm waiting to see if Samsung can narrow down affected batches and release the unaffected devices...
If you want to check the date your Note 7 or any Samsung device was manufactured type this into the phone dialer *#12580*369# the "RF Cal" field is the date of device manufacture, if that information even helps in anyway Im not sure yet.
A worldwide recall is just that. Every phone that was sold. This letter is total BS.
This is one of many reasons why eBay just even an option to buy stuff for me. If it isnt Amazonable then it's not worth it, I get you want a deal and access to unlocked devices and whatnot but eBay has and will always be that "scummy dark alley" place for sellers, and by the looks of this letter (which looks so sketchy) this is another prime example of that. I wouldn't trust this at all, looks like he's just wants to keep his money and not deal with returns.

Yes. If it were real, Samsung should fire their PR. You don't go anouncing a worldwide recall and then say whoops, we didn't mean it. And wait a whole weekend to correct it. This is a huge blow for them and it is exceptionally hard on us customers worrying we might have ticking time bombs in our possesion. If they back out of their statement after a weekend of not caring, they will ruin their reputation further. They will appear non credible. Excuse me but exploding phones warrant Samsung managment and PR works all weekend!
I agree. This letter is fake. It's a (mostly) well done fake, but a fake. IMO, it's Tropical trying to keep from having to take back all the phones they've sold.
In the US and the EU they would have little choice, in Singapore I'm not sure if they can weasel out of it or not.
I've already received my email from Amazon saying that they will send a full refund for the phone and any accessories I have purchased there. It was not this seller (Tropical) but of course as an FD model it is grey market and was sold without warranty. The email also said that if I sold the phone I should notify the person I sold it to so that they can return it for a refund. Lastly it stated that the return hadn't been hashed out yet and not to send it until they were ready.
I'm going to extrapolate a little here with a few guesses. The fact that Amazon also specifically mentioned a further buyer and my phone is already grey market implies that Samsung is going after all the phones regardless of where/how they were purchased. That they don't want me to send it yet gives me the impression they don't know exactly what they are going to do with it or how the process will go which would mean Samsung hasn't yet hashed it out internally how they will handle the grey market phones and given that information to those that sold them.
Those are guesses Gents, I have no special knowledge, I'm just reading the tea leaves.
I bought my phone from LuLu Mall here from Riyadh ( SA ).
Model is : SM N930FD
Made in Vietnam.
How we can confirm that my phone will also come under the recall process ? I have been using the device for like past 3 days and i don't feel any Lag, battery drain or Over heating while charging or using the phone.

Well, it happened... (eMMC failure)

Well, the day has come. After having to replace my LG G4 four months ago due to the Bootloop issue, I am now running into a similar problem with my Verizon Galaxy Note 4. Based on research I've done, I have came to the conclusion that my eMMC memory chip is failing on me. I ran four memory tests using AndroBench, and every one of them gave me a sequential read speed between 38 and 43 megabytes.

I come to the geniuses of XDA to see if there is any way to fix this issue. Could I possibly install some software to delay it or replace the chip somehow? Perhaps a mainboard transplant from a broken device from eBay? I haven't had this phone long and I really enjoy it, so I'd hate to have to get a whole new one if this is repairable. I just don't know a whole lot about the hardware aspects and if it is possible. Thanks for the help, and let me know if there's anything else you need to know to help.

The Wakelock - CPU Awake app can help for awhile, but you will most likely need to replace the motherboard. In the US Samsung is replacing MBs for about $50 to $150 if phone is out of warranty (call 1-800-Samsung) should be free if in warranty. Otherwise you can do it yourself, but watch some you tube videos fist. The procedure is not for the faint of heart.

You can get MBs on AliExpress. Here's an example:
100% Original unlocked for Samsung Galaxy Note 4 N910V Motherboard,Complete Logic Boards with Chips, for Note 4 N910V Mainboard
http://s.aliexpress.com/2Ib6faIj
(from AliExpress Android). This is for the Verizon Note 4.
But I would seriously consider sending your phone to Samsung for repair if they will do it for $100 or so. i wouldn't pay much more since last time I checked you could buy a brand new Note 4 for $300 to $350 US. I would be wary of buying a used Note 4 however since you will probably just end up with one that has a failing MB.

The only evidence you have of your eMMC failing is a low benchmark from AndroBench?

Thanks for the info! I have installed WakeLock to hopefully stall the inevitable. I have a good bit of experience fixing devices like phones and tablets, so I am comfortable replacing a mainboard myself. My only big concern is the IMEI. Do you know if the phone will still be functional after simply switching the boards? I have read that the stock boards Samsung uses for replacement parts do not come with an IMEI, but instead have the old one copied over somehow. I've never used this site you mentioned so I just want to make sure it'll work as expected lol

I sent my phone into Samsung, so I don't know for sure what happens to the IMEI number if you put in a new MB yourself. I was told that if you buy a brand new MB that you would get a new IMEI number and as long as that number was good (e.g., not reported as stolen) the phone would work fine. Sort of like what happens if you put your SIM card into a different phone.
You may want to ask that question in the other thread I mentioned. There are a lot more knowledgeable people over there that may have experience with MB replacement.
Regarding the AliExpress website: This was the only place I could find new MBs. Everywhere else seemed to be selling used which very likely could be failing. You would be buying from Asia vendors and it will likely take a few weeks to arrive. If you go that route. Just make sure you go with a high rated vendor and read the reviews. I would also suggest paying for the Epacket delivery option. You will get your MB faster and it has better tracking. The final delivery to your shipping address will be via USPS.

Convince me to buy the P2XL

Hey folks... first I am not trying to start anything negative....I really am wanting the P2XL but with the perceived issues I read about and the price tag I am having difficulty rationalizing the extra 400 dollars vs the Essential. I know many of the issues are blown a bit out of proportion. To me the best way of getting the facts is to go to the users who actually use the device...
I would be coming from the Nexus 6p.
Thanks for any information.
Mate, if you want a new Device and consider the Pixel 2 XL I just want to tell you: Get it and test it. If it fits your expectations stick with it, if not, change. Easy.
I also ordered mine but will get it in round about 5-10 days and despite all the negative press I am very excited. If it doesnt fit my expectations I will get my refund and done.
Btw: the hardest competitor to the Pixel 2 XL is the upcoming OnePlus 5t in my opinion and absolutely not the essential
Agreed, buy it and try it for yourself. The return process is pretty simple with Google if you change your mind. All you have to loose is a bit of time.
Buy it or don't buy, who cares, I got mine...
if you need to have to ask someone else for justification, you probably shouldn't buy it.
I think you should buy an iPhone. Those people have been convinced that their product is superior and they should buy it. So I think you should as well! Jk jk jk?

Hey folks... first I am not trying to start anything negative....I really am wanting the P2XL but with the perceived issues I read about and the price tag I am having difficulty rationalizing the extra 400 dollars vs the Essential. I know many of the issues are blown a bit out of proportion. To me the best way of getting the facts is to go to the users who actually use the device...
I would be coming from the Nexus 6p.
Thanks for any information.

What issues have you read about? Have you experienced these yourself? Every device has issues when released, this didn't stop me from buying. The price tag is there because Google DOESN'T want to sell hardware. They give you the price tag to deter you away, and it works for most.
I'm a Google/AOSP enthusiast - I was on every nexus device and Pixel. I will always be. Issues or not. Google has not once ever let me down like OnePlus has. I will stand behind Google and what ever it sells.
The company backing a product is also a huge selling point for me. Not to mention the phone rocks. Just an FYI. What phone has an orange power button!?
The essential phone would be the obvious buy if it wasn't for the camera. The extra $400 (closer to $500) is the premium I'm willing to pay to have the best camera ever on a phone. I have 2 young kids, so the ability to be able to pull out my phone and get an awesome picture every time is something I'm willing to pay for.
If you don't take a lot of pictures, there's plenty of better options out there for you. I'd consider the essential, the op 5t, the razer phone, heck even my old v20 is still rock solid and retains a removable battery and ir blaster.

I have the P 2 XL and love the phone. Does everything right. The barely showing time of day and message notification is GREAT.
Also, the what music is playing now feature is helpful. If you don't want to buy and maybe return it, go to a Verizon store and handle
one for a few. You'll be able to tell alot from handling it and seeing if you like the screen. Def worth a look! Get the US Unlocked version
from Google or Swappa, not the Verizon due to locked down bootloader. p.s. Tried and returned the Essential. Doesn't compare.....
Your choice and hands-on is best test! My badboy Pixel XL 2 is rocking...
When the phone came out all reviews were overwhelmingly positive based on the reviewer's perception of the particular phone they were sent. My perception is the same. I love it! Very fast, very efficient, great camera and now the screen is great too! Based on most initial reviews and my own experience I'm guessing the phones with significant problems are very few compared to those that don't. Also the overall rating on this forum is 4.8.
I think most of the issues with the phone affect each of us (or don't affect us at all) differently based on how we use it. You have nothing to lose by trying it.
My XL is going back today. Apparently I have one of the 'bad' pOLED displays.
I could not care less about the saturation or whatever. And it's not just the blue shift on mine. The red and yellows that appear unless you are looking dead center ruin the experience.
This is not acceptable for $850+ device. The IPS LCD on my 2 yr old LG V10 is vastly superior to the Pixel 2 XL.
The quality control issue is real, and the denials by Google are sad. Here are two side by side from the other thread:

I'm more than happy with mine. Although I'm still waiting for the 5t to come out but i think I'ma stick with XL. This thing is so smooth. Battery life and camera are the best two parts of the phone. The blue shift is not bothering me at all and although I'm not used to the natural colors but i think it could be fixed with custom kernels. Microphone is terrible tho.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
Thank folks for all the input....I do believe I will prob go with the 2XL

Question No more OP 9 Pro updates?

Really?

The latest OTA is version 11.2.8.8.LE15AA, I think that one in the screenshot is the full version download preceding the latest OTA updates, but IDK for sure lol
Edit - my default kernel was built on Jul 8 2021, and android security date/level is 7/1/21 ... HTH
I read about OnePlus getting new people to make a team to work on Open Beta for 9/9Pro.
I like that!
New team is not something to like. It might be good but also be a disaster. Questions should be asked like WHY????? are they getting a new team? What happened to all the revenue they made and how are they using it? Who is controlling the company, One Plus or the Chinese government? Why the delay to begin with. I realized DP1 was developers preview and not beta but why not allow Google updates for DP 2 and three. Who cares that Oxygen was not on it yet. Now that stability been reached with Beta, let's us Early Adopters adopt. I refuse to buy a Google Pixel love my one plus but was so excited that it allowed BL to be unlocked but I feel let down by OP. Perhaps my expectations were unrealistic to begin with

This update is from June. (end of the month)
There's an update (11.2.8.8) from July. (end of month)
So, following this logic, this week OnePlus might release a new one.

I'd be more worried if the US government was running it like apple with the new back door.

Lol US government and Chinese as well because even though apple says they are all American blah blah but they are manufactured in China as well. Just all marketing etc
People get married, have kids, no more time to spend on Android. Priorities change.

People get married, have kids, no more time to spend on Android. Priorities change. I also think not only priorities of people's lives but also Android itself and the huge slowdown of phone evolution. Actual since smartphone sales slowed companies like apple and Google created smart watches to help increase revenues. They first used the old nostalgic movies like knight rider or James bond to sell them even though Smart watches cannot do anything close to what the movies portrayed. You can make flippable phones but you won't see hologram s coming out of your phone. I know we love to always think of our technology being limitless but that dam law of physics keeps getting in the way. So now they will start with AR glasses with WebView capabilities. And when that fails, which it will because who wants a HUD I'm their line of sight. In 30 years we will events have implants and chips that will help the brain and technology link. Isn't it Neurolink that exists now. That technology is decades away. Because again we do not know how the body/brain will react and now I'm having flashback from the movie Black Mirror.

Ain't no updates that can save this POS.
the support update page is only updated from time to time, it does not repesent the actual stage of the software.
At this point 11.2.8.8 is up 2 date. OnePlus updates bi-monthly.

Get a life.. go buy an iphone or something and quit trolling
There's closed beta testing so maybe devs are focusing to it. Sad to see no fix for Gmail notification bug...

I think the gmail app just sux. I've experienced the late notifications across quite a few devices personally.
Oxygen sucks because of google. The more google on it the more bad Oxygen will be.
Also the King of Bloatware, samsung already gets Androis 12.
And OnePlus release 9R or something...
They are starting the ultimate consolidation of Oxygen OS into Color OS. How is OnePlus going to manage all these phones? Do they even have enough staff to manage all these phones?
Unfortunately they only update bi-monthly.
I saw a user suggest on their official forums basically say "hey guys, how about monthly updates like your competition?" in a friendly way, and a mod basically said **** off and closed the thread. I wasn't impressed.
This was my first OnePlus device, maybe my last.
That 12 Beta debacle was ridiculous.
After having the 7, 8, & 9 Pro, I will be leaving the building as well!
Is this a joke? About month last update and now ppl are think this is over. How do u even can survive this life?
I like how people actually think theres a decent alternative to oneplus these days. At least not in the US. Maybe google if the pixel 6 is actually premium/flagship this time. Otherwise theres no other brand with an unlockable bootloader, which is how they get away with so much bloat. Personally im fine of oneplus becomes a little more like the others as long as the hardware is premium and the bootloader is unlockable.
9 Pro is my first and last phone from OP if they can't get they BS sorted out. The phone has horrible battery life, scrolling issues, and it doesn't get better with next updates. Also, wtf is that BS with the bi-monthly update scheudle? A device like this should be fixed ASAP, the users are experiencing problems and neet to wait, the hell is that policy? Would they wait 2 months to release an update if someone would find a security bug too? So stupid. Get your **** together OnePlus.
