Upgrading from my OPO so going to try out stock for a bit.
Best course would be unlock Bootloader right away and later on if I want TWRP and root, that's the simple part, correct?
Unlocked bootloader doesn't trip anything in terms of ota or secure apps. That's only from custom recovery/root?

As long as you keep your stock revocery you will get official OTA's.
Unlocking the bootloader will erase all your internal data. But after that, you are free to flash custom recovery as soon as you want to.
Like I already said, you can stay with stock recovery and get all OTA's.

It's the same way I did it. Unlocked bootloader before started using the phone so I don't have to copy my internal data to my Pc and then back to the phone.
When it's time, I will start using custom ROMs

Ahh, I was so excited to start configuring the 5T that I forgot about the fact that the bootloader deletes all the files. How can you back it all up before doing so?

You can connect your OP5T to your computer and transfer all your files (music, pictures, contacts) to your computer.
Unfortunately Titanium Backup does not work without root. Otherwise you could save your apps+appdata too.

Ahh, that's what I assumed. I'll have to restart again at some point. I might do it when official TWRP gets released for 5T. At this point I'll just continue to use it normally (even though it hurts me to use it without ios emojis, adblock etc etc)

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but i could not find any.
So i got the Nexus beast yesterday, and it's already blazing me off with it's greatness. But i got a few problems though:
1. I got the jakjuxw, not the jakju, will i get the same updates as the jakju OTA, but only a week later or so?
2. I did not root the phone before starting using it, but i regret that now. Is there any way i can root it and NOT lose all of my apps and data? I have spent so many hours to customize this device and i dont want to start all over (yes i know about app backup's, but they are slow)
3. If i root but stay with the stock rom, will i still be getting the original OTA updates or does i have to flash the roms manually and wipe the phone every time?
I'd appreciate it if anyone could answer all the questions =)

Not sure about this, it probably depends on what they want to release. I don't think there's any kind of guarantee they'll get the same updates, but there's also probably no reason why they wouldn't.

You need to unlock the bootloader to root, and unlocking the bootloader wipes the device. Sorry. Someday an exploit might be found for ICS that allows you to root without unlocking.

If you keep stock recovery, you'll still get OTA updates when rooted. If you use custom recovery like ClockworkMod, you'll have to do them manually (but you won't need to wipe). In both cases, applying the update will probably cause you to lose root and you'll have to re-root. This is easy if you've unlocked the bootloader.
If you root by using some future exploit, you might find that the update you just installed removed root and closed the hole that allowed you to gain it without unlocking the bootloader, and now you're left stuck without root. I'd say just unlock the bootloader now and be done with it. It'll be a pain, but then you don't need to worry about it again.

Just unlocked it and rooted it, but i think im gonna install the official google 4.0.2 rom, i wil get the OTA updates then too right?
edit: how am i able to flash a rom without CWM? Also do i really not need to wipe my phone if i use CWM? i had to do it on my Desire.

Yes, but the updates will probably unroot you. You should be able to just re-root after. If using CWM you can probably flash superuser right after flashing the update and not lose root at all. This is what I always did with my Nexus One when I still had the rooted stock ROM.

If the ROM comes as images (like the Google factory images) you can flash with fastboot. The Google ones come with a script that uses fastboot to do it for you.

I meant installing updates here... you don't usually need to wipe if you are installing updates to your current ROM, such as OTA updates to the stock ROM. You need to wipe if you're changing ROMs. It's probably no different than your Desire.

i had rooted my phone a while back and installed custom recovery , and was on stock ROM.
Due to issues on official emails, i had to unroot my phone and relock it.
All is fine, however i did miss 1 step, that is, i still have a diff recovery on it, and i want to install my stock recovery back so that i can install OTA.
I do have the stock recovery (i think).
So is theree a quick way to do that without unlocking the bootloader again or without losing any data?

post result from command fastboot getvar version-main and we will find you the stock recovery

as i can remember even if your bootloader is unlocked as long as you have stock recovery you can update.. just make sure you have a backup of all your data.
Phew.. So my booloader is RE LOCKED now, and i just want to install the stock recovery... without losing data or unlocking the bootloader........possible???

To flash recovery, your bootloader must be unlocked. Do you still have unlock.bin file?

As far as I remember you will lose data. Make a backup (Titanium, or similar app) of important data, unlock the bootloader, flash stock recovery, reboot, restore data.
And keep the bootloader unlocked!

I have a new M8 and, for the moment, I want to keep it stock, but rooted. Is it possible to fastboot boot TWRP, flash SuperSU for root, and still be capable of receiving OTA updates, since TWRP isn't actually installed? I'm coming from a N4 and N10 where I didn't care so much about official OTAs, so I've never tried this.
Also, do I still have to unlock the bootloader first in order to use fastboot at all? And does having an unlocked bootloader prevent OTAs?

No, you can't root with a locked bootloader. That's the whole point (well, mostly) of a locked bootloader.
Also, its my strong opinion that OTAs have no place on a modded/rooted device. It won't work anyway, the OTA will check for root and fail to install. Or even if it did install, it would unroot the phone.
If you want to root, just do the whole deal, unlock bootloader, install custom recovery, etc. You can flash anything you want, including the awesome array of custom ROMs, or stock rooted ROMs for other carrier versions (which usually get released soon after the OTAs anyway).
Totally makes sense. Knowing me, it won't be long before I feel constricted with a locked bootloader (especially if I can't root}, but just wanted to see how "virgin" I can't keep the phone while I break it in. Plus I read a recommendation to use fastboot to boot into TWRP as an alternative to flashing it. But if I have to have an unlocked bootloader to do even that, I suppose I should just install TWRP and be done with it, like I'm used to.

Not sure what will happen if you try to boot TWRP with a locked bootloader. Maybe only one way to find out
But that would be purely academic. You can't flash SU or SuperSU, since you need write access to the system partition to do so (and therefore an unlocked bootloader), regardless of whether you can boot TWRP or not.

is there away to install SuperSU when you have stock recovery? I'm thinking that we have to have either CWM/TWRP to install the zip. or am I having a brain fart on this.....

You can install it if you have the bootloader unlocked.
Use boot command instead of flash to boot into custom recovery and install su.

However, why bother keeping stock recovery at all? Stock recovery is effectively neutered once rooted, as you can no longer install an OTA.

so when I go into recovery now I get a image of a htc one with a red triangle and exclamation mark inside of it?? since I have never went into recovery on this phone before isn't it supposed to look like any other stock recovery??? and if this isn't right I have tried flashing the recovery already and still get the same result... can someone expand on this for me pls

i sold the phone and this is what they requested. I know the OTA wont work and I never keep stock recoveries on my phones but.... I guess they will find out for themselves

Sounds like somebody that is a bit ill-informed. They want root, but they probably also want OTA (the 2 don't go together, IMO) and heard that you need stock recovery for OTA. I suppose they can change everything back that they modified with root, and unroot or hide root to install the OTA. But it just seems they are making life more complicated than it needs to be.
Also sounds like its a person that wants root, but not willing to do it themselves. But I suppose that's not really your problem!
Option to root and have ota is very easy :
Stock rom (unmodified but rooted)
Stock recovery
And you can ota. The ota will probably delete superuser but that's about it. The ota will not fail because its rooted as long as the stock rom/apps are unmodified

Rooting doesn't affect ota's, at least not in my experience.

Only if absolutely nothing was changed with the stock ROM.
Its more my point there is little point to installing OTAs on a rooted device.

I don't understand that statement. I still run stock sense, but with a few additions that don't affect ota's. So I still get updates while having things configured the way I want. I can also run things that require root such as titanium backup and a few others.

Because once you accept an OTA, you will be unrooted. You will have to root again, either by installing custom recovery (than back to stock recovery so you can OTA) or the trick of booting custom recovery via adb to flash SU (as described here). Its just a lot of jumping through hoops with little added value.
On the other hand, if you have custom recovery installed, you can flash any of the array of stock rooted or awesome custom ROMs posted here. This includes stock rooted ROMs taken from OTA updates from lots of versions (often posted within days of the OTA starting to roll out), not just your carrier, so you can possibly get an update much faster than waiting for the OTA to roll out from your carrier (although that depends on what carrier version you have). You also don't have to constantly be worried "well, if I change this I won't get OTAs". You can do whatever the heck you want, and isn't that really the whole point of root?
Its just my opinion. And a lot of this may stem from the fact that I'm on AT&T, who are not only agonizingly slow about rolling out OTAs (sometimes 3-4 months or even later than other carriers on my past HTC device) and have even went to the effort to close exploits and prevent unlocking of bootloaders when rolling out new OTAs (on the One X EVITA). In fact there was even a bug (I assume it was a bug - others may accuse that it was intentional) where installing the Jellybean OTA with SuperCID and S-on bricked the phone.
As I said, its just an opinion. But there are many others on XDA that will agree that OTAs have no place on rooted Android devices.
And to be fair, I did cover myself and stated "there is little point" instead of "there is no point"

I'm running stock 3.2.7 unrooted with stock recovery. The bootloader is still unlocked as I tried out a few custom ROMs about a month back. I now want to wipe and sell the phone so need to lock the bootloader. Can I just do the standard OEM lock in adb or should I also sideload the full 3.2.7 update zip again?

Thanks, I thought so but I had to check. Strange... after rooting phones and installing custom ROMs for maybe 8 years, I don't think I've ever relocked a bootloader.
It's safer to flash stock again then to relock bootloader, even if you think you are stock (including recovery) maybe you are not.
But except the booting screen, you won't gain anything from relocking bootloader, even the warranty will work with bootloader unlocked.

Thanks, but I plan to sell my OP3 to a high street store that buys and sells second-hand phones and tablets. Although it's only 3 months old and in immaculate condition, I'm guessing they may be reluctant to buy it if the start up screen says 'this phone can't be trusted...'
No choice in this situation - I will need to relock the bootloader I guess.
If you lock the bootloader, everything will be wiped and phone won't boot till you flash OOS.

Ta mate. I already saw that thread but as I'm running a clean sideloaded OOS that has never been rooted, I am already back to stock. Anyway, as opinion seems to be divided on whether OEM lock alone is enough, I will also sideload a full OOS update zip again to be sure.
Won't be doing it for a few days though so it's all academic at the moment.

i did that guide too. i came from cm13. thiss guide works perfect if you follow all steps exactly.
