Staff at service center will easily detect that it was fell into the water by checking warranty stickers which are found inside the phone these stickers are designed in such a way that whenever they come in contact with water they turn up their color so I don't think they will help u in any way. Always do insurance of your phone at the time buying so u can easily tackle these type of situations

Literally every non removal back phone is little bit water resistant even xiamoi redmi note 4 is survived the water resistant test but the company never claimed that it is water resis.flagships phone are officially water resistant and claimed by their respective companies but if u look into the warranty of any phone even those who claimed to be water resistant will not provide u any kind of warranty regarding water damage that's why I used word "water resistant" but not "water proof" there is so much difference in resistance and proof and despite if your phone has IP 68 rating it is not guaranteed that it will not going to be damage by water yes chances are very low but it is still there.

The manufacturers do not honor IP ratings, that's why they are water resistant, because waterproofing will rob them of essential aftersales business.

Liquid damage indicator on defy

Can anyone do me a favour by uploading a pic of defy's Liquid damage indicator. I just dipped my phone in a glass of water for 10 sec and after that i cud see some water inside the screen. The touch screen either was non responsive or auto responsive. I removed the battery and put the phone in uncooked rice for entire night and then dried in sun for 2 hrs. Now can't see any water and the phone is working gud. But I am worried that the liquid damage indicator might have turned red (which i am not sure where it is located). That can definately void my warranty.
I think there's one on the battery besides the terminals
And one below it a hexagonal structure...
Sent from my MB525 using xda premium
There is one rectangular indicator on the base of the battery to the left of the conector pins as the battery sits in the phone. I believe the white hexagon above the sim card slot is also a moisture indicator, but cannot confirm.

for me both indicators are red, so i can confirm those are the indicators (fortunately the only damage the water caused is the battery drainig faster, so i will have tobreplace the battery only).

No offence.
I never dipped it. Only accidently it went in water for 10 sec and a water resistant if not water proof cud have given a diff. result.

So far I've hosed it down, dropped it in the pool, heck even swam with it in a river no problems with the battery or indicators whatsoever. So I'd say mine is pretty much waterproof.

All these depends on QC pass when the device was manufatured. Some might have a litte tiny not 100% perfect but was given the PASS from QC. It's base on how lucky you are when you hit the store to buy your Defy. However, it's not wise testing the device water proofness and toughness anyway. It advertised as tough phone and defying everyday life but doesn't mean consumer need to go beaingt and torture it and start complaining when it fail..
....Peace....

Before putting your Defy in water you need to understand what IP67 means and what is the phoen designed to resist.
I took my Defy to a water park and it was amazing. I have some really cool videos and pics underwater, got a video in a Waterslide and so on.
Few things to understand about IP67:
-Phone resists 30 mins under water, at 1m depth, and NOT MOVING.
Once your phone goes into water you have to avoid rapid moves with it, when you move the phone under water, you can create pressure equivalent to having the phone 50m underwater (standing still).
Another really important thing is the rubber on the USB/Headphone/Battery Cover. You cant touch this rubber, nor apply any kind of oil based grease (Sweat, Vaseline) on it, cause it kills the water resistance attribute of it and actually dryes the rubber.
Its recommended to apply a bit of Silicone based Grease every few months to keep the rubber in good condition, after about 3 years it will eventually lose its properties and start leaking water.
If you are taking your phone to a water-adventure day like I did, I recommend using a bit of duct tape on the USB port and Headphone to avoid it getting accidentaly open.
if i remember rightly the defy isn't actually stated as being ip67 rated..motorola shyed away from it

RIP My Motorola Defy :'( [Read please]

Yesterday (2/11/2011) my defy passed away at around 3PM because of this stupid sea water...
-I went in the sea unconscious that my Defy was in my pocket, when I realised, I immediately got out of the water to check it. It was not powering on!! So I dried it, open the rear case and removed everything from it.
Then when I returned home I put it in uncooked rice, and desiccant, but in vain.
-My phone is not really dead, it's in an eternal coma, the phone boots up! That said, I see the blue/green LEDS when I power it on. It even vibrates when booting, but unfortunately the display and the softkeys remain black :'(
(No haptic feedback,no sound, etc)
Update: Haptic feedback works and so do the loudspeaker!
So this is my Defy's story, which lived ~275 days, lol
I wonder how to revive it... If it's possible.
Right now I don't know what phone to buy really... I'm thinking of an LG Optimus Black, dual-core phones are too costly haha.
To not make this thread useless, user are welcomed to post how their defy passed away, and what will be your next phone,etc...

I really don't think this thread should be in the development-section.
First off, this sould indeed not be in the development section.
Second off your Defy has a 2 year warranty so you can still claim it on warranty, your phone should be able to resist a short time in water. It didnt, so send it to a Motorola cerified repair center and claim you warranty.
Greetings and good luck!

Personally I wouldn't give up on it until a week has gone by. I know smartphones are more complex but old Nokias that got wet could take up to a week to dry out fully and then power on.

Every electronic device sold in the EU must have 2 years Warranty MINIMUM, and there are a few extra things in the UK, if an item gets repaired 2 times, the customer can ask and must receive if asked a new Product if it breaks a third time.
Regarding salty water, even if you manage to make it work its gonna die shortly, the salt destroys everything inside the phone its the worst think that can happen to any electronic device.
And motorola doesnt cover Water Damage, the phone is Water Resistant not Water Proof. I think you cant find any item nowadays in the market labeled and sold as Water Proof
really crappy that it happened
strange how people tend to kill their defys, mine had been underwater a lot (really, taking pictures, going swimming, listening to music in the shower, etc.), and the only problem i got is that water got inside, turned both water damage indicators red (one on the phone just above the motherboard, and one on the battery near the pins), but the only thing that changed is that my battery drains faster.
We all know that there are two kinds of waters that dangerous to electronics: Rains and Sea Salt water.
But I'm thinking. The Defy has at least 12 months of warranty - 365 days, and you use it for over 200 days and give up ? Why not going to the warranty ?
Last, hope you has a better replacement.

There are a few water indicators in the Defy, outside and inside it. If any of these indicators are red (meaning water got inside) you void your warranty.
The phone is water resistant, not water proof. There is a HUGE difference between both terms, hence all the electronic devices for the past 10 years or more, that can handle water, are labeled as Water Resistant. Not Proof.

My phone has also been under water a lot, I took it to a water park not long ago and got into some of those highspeed super awesome Water Slides with it
The problem you are facing is, that probably there is a small short in your battery, once the battery gets wet it tends to get sulfated and that causes the batt to discharge alone. You could just get a new batt
Thanks for all your replies haha.. I think that I'm gaining hope again and I'll try to see the Agency first. Then if it doesn't work eventually I'll visit a Motorola phone retailer (there's HOPEFULLY 1, only 1 in my country haha)

IMHO if I got the same problem, I will buy a temporary phone, use it and wait until another rugged smartphone not. Maybe it will be the DEFY 2 (Just imagine) with ARMv8 and Lotus Glass (even better than Gorilla Glass)
search xda and youtube on how to open up your defy, its bloody easy, then spray WD40 or isopropyle alcohol to clean the PCB board where rust or water damage is visible, then leave outside to dry for a day.
If the battery did not fry the circuits, then it should still work fine.
worth a try if you cant claim warranty, good luck.

does our z1c is water resistent in regular water only?or we can shoot pics or videos up to 1 meter in the ocean too?

Lets put it this way, the shell stops liquid ingression, as long as the particles aren't smaller than regular water then they won't make it inside. What will happen in seawater is that the salt and other chemicals in the seawater will start corroding your O-rings, and eventually they will fail. After exposing your phone to seawater I would recommend washing it in clean water and cleaning the seals with a damp piece of cloth afterward.
I wouldn't, for example, recommend you go swimming in the ocean with it every day for a month.
Aha got it, and what about like 5-6 days for about total 30minutes a day?

As long as you clean it like I mentioned earlier after each exposure.
Is it worth it though? You won't get any reception in the water, you can't use the touchscreen and the speaker will sound like crap. Yeah it's fun for a while, go take some water photos, just be careful with your expensive phone.
Oh, and don't hold me responsible if it breaks due to my advice.

In order to actually cause any damage the current must be pretty large, that's not going to happen in ocean water. What could happen is dock mode being triggered, and the phone might think its charging, but I doubt it would cause any permanent damage.

I doubt Sony have said anything official beyond what they state in their IP58 certification where it specifically says "clean water". Meaning water with a neutral pH value. The reason for this is the salts and other chemicals in seawater start to corrode the O-ring in our seals, eventually causing them to leak.
well i will report in a first or second week of july if phone survive salt water, ill test it while shooting vids and pictures of the ocean reff, like i said ill try to use it 5-6 days maximum 30 minutes a day in a several times
I would say that it can survive, provided the flaps are closed and the phone is still waterproof.
like few posts above, the salt in the water may actually damage the loudspeaker and corrode the rings. don't forget its made of metal.
i think its ok to use it for few pics for quick video but needs fresh water cleaning after to clean up the salt in the headphones jack or the speakerphone.
also if u take a macro pic of the camera lens, there is small gap between the back cover and the glass (check my posts i posted some nice macro shots of the camera lens) so things might get inside.
think about the waterproofing as a protection, not as a feature.
so get a call in the rain, but don't go swimming / snorkeling every chance you have.
Didnt understand this with macro pics

Have you put your Z1C underwater?

hey guys. I've got this phone for a month now but still haven't checked the waterproofness. Did you try it the first day you got it? should I be super careful with this? I'm scared. I even though it's advertised as waterproof..
Yeap, I've tried it underwater. The screen responsiveness changes, else everything works, including the camera.
not worth the risk, there are enough reports about water damage
I'm tried to test the limits of the phone (i know it could be ridiculous). So I've swum for more than an hour and the phone was under more or less 1,5 m (limit recommended by Sony). It has survived for a moment...Once out i dried it. It has worked for some hours until the battery comes empty. No way to charge it anyway, a component of my battery was dead...I've send it to repair center claiming I had only let it fall in water and they replaced it by a new one
moral of the history don't try to put it in the water just for fun
I have used mine on water several times for several hours, and it's still working fine.
In fact I have tried it the very first day, this way if it's waterproofing was flawed, I would have returned it under warranty.
Now that my phone is more than a year old, i am obviously less keen to put it under water.
I've made lots videos underwater. Dunk phone in beer, whiskey. Dropped it in river. It even got some salty water after i remembered it beeing forbidden.
The phone is waterproof. If not warranty replaces for free. If you got by third party then they often try to make some bs excuse not to deal with it.
The golden rule: if you use miniusb to charge you wear out the rubber flap and it will not be waterproof, if you use dock you won't have this problem.

Where i bought it from they said water damage is under warranty.
Why would they advertise the phone in water or spilling water on it if the warranty won't cover it? The salesperson dunk the phone in water to show it was fully waterproof and without leaks before selling it to me.

That's a salesman tactic, but there's no guarantee. If you don't believe me, feel free to and go ahead and go nuts with your phone.
BTW, who told you it's under warranty? The sales staff? I personally asked a technical support person this question (in lieu of some other problems I had) this, and they said no, it's not covered under warranty.
You should be very careful if you try it underwater.. On my first time, the micro usb cover opened up and the phone was damaged, with no warranty by anyone ?
I had to open it up and dry it with hair dryer for an hour.. (and since then it's still non-waterproof)
Conclusion - be careful ?
Sent from my D5503
My phone got damaged by water in the third time that I put it under water. Seems like due overheating (I was playing, charging and wearing a bumper case at the same time) the back and the back frame unglued in the Sim tray area. I remembered how the screen started to flick and how the water comes out from Sim tray ?. I used a hair dryer and at this moment the phone is working fine?. I replaced the back frame (also, it solves the gaps in the middle where are the magnetic charging and the Lock/Volume buttons). By now, I am waiting the rear cover, it should arrive in 15days. But after that bad experience I won't put the phone in water anymore.
Btw, does anybody knows if there's a difference between fresh water and seawater/ pool water?
I've been told from Sony that the warranty is only on fresh water damage..

Salt water leaves salty residue on the phone and is also more corrosive than fresh water. So, Sony won't cover damage in salt water.

Submerged my z1c in a glass of water upon getting it just to check if it's waterproof. A week later, i used it at the beach and it got submerged pretty often in saltwater that day but no water damage. Occasionally i wash my phone with soap under running water maybe every 2-4 weeks(I'm a germaphobe...) My friends also like to take my phone and submerge it in water randomly for fun. I guess it's also because of me that a number of them ended up buying the z2 and later z3

ok thank you all for replies and sorry for being so inactive.
I'm not going to dump it in the water on purpose I think. Even if it's sold as waterproof I'm scared. it was too expensive and it's too amazing phone to just kill it for no reason.
also yes I'm going to buy a dock asap.
thank you again guys!

About the dock.... It might be cheaper to just buy the mag cable if you want to use your phone while it's charging and save some money. Amazon has a few brands selling these types of cables or adapters when i last bought mine. Or you can check with the stores where you live.

Yeah dude, that looks like classic water damage to me. Water damage can also cause things to burn, source: i watch enough louis rossmann on youtube repairing water damaged macbook motherboards
Hi how old is the watch , maybe check with Huawei direct, as it does look strange to me as I would expect damage through out the unit from water ingress instead of it being so localised as here.
There also does not appear to be any signs of damage to watch where the seal should sit either, so strongly suggest you pursue this with the Manufacture even if outside of standard 12 months warranty as this may have been a manufacturing defect which has contributed to this failure.
