T-Mobile on Motorola Moto Z Play XT1635-02 ? - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Does anyone with the Motorola Moto Z Play XT1635-02 have T-Mobile? Also do you get 3G,4g, & 4G LTE?

I have only lte. 4g missing.

I believe T-mobile permanently got rid of 3G. Seems liek they're using E (edge) now because they are starting to fix 4G lte and implement more of the 5G in the upcoming years. Yes 4G is not present either.

The -02 variant is the only variant that will work properly with T-Mobile.
-01 and -03 are missing a ton of necessary bands.

No, 3G most definitely is present. What you see as H/H+ is 3G (HSPA).

Charlotte NC. Idk I travel up the seaboard often and I pick up H/H+ all the time. Given that you're in NYC though it wouldn't be surprising that T-Mo is migrating to 5G up there.

Its kind of ridiculous to cut off 3G when most of the mid-range smartphones dont have the necessary antennas/bands capabilities to have 5G. I hate T-mobile with a passion.

Are you kidding? LTE is 4g. It's just marketing how carrier will call it. I saw 5g advertising in one country even is still just LTE.

Any app to show what network one is on?

I'm looking for an app that will tell me what kind of network I'm on (3G, 4G, LTE), etc. Also, if it picks up an LTE network, I need to know what band it's on, or at least the frequency.
Anything out there that will do this, especially regarding the LTE part?

The Nexus 4 only has LTE Band 4, so that narrows down the options. Why can't you just look at the signal icon? If it's E, you're on 2G, if it's H, you're on 3G, H+ for 3.5/HSPA. I don't know what LTE icon is used, but I'm sure it's distinctive.
From what I've read, the N4 doesn't have an H+ icon, only H. I just wanted to see if there was an app that would scan the available LTE network here and tell me what frequency it's using, so I'll know whether or not to waste my time doing the LTE hack.
The N4 does have an H+ icon. I get it often, when I'm not connected to T-Mobiles LTE network. When connected to LTE, it'll say 4G.
Weird. I can look at the status of my network in settings and see HSPA+ 15, yet look up in the notification area and only see an H. I'm sure it's because I am somewhat new here, but you're the first person that has said their N4 has the H+ icon. I believe you, just not the response I thought I'd get.
So, any idea about an app?
there's no way for your phone's radio to scan for LTE without having LTE enabled. check out http://www.tmonews.com/ for a listing of cities that have 4G

That might be why you don't have H+. AT&T probably does theirs different.
I use this app.

Works like s charm and will show simple network descriptions like 3G or HSPA.

I tried TMO prepaid, but if you're outside of a TMO area, you lose all data. Had to go with AT&T or an AT&T mvno.
I own nexus 7 & using 2G Sim & 2G connection then why its showing me H ??

depends. what are your speeds? if they are above 150kbps, it's likely you're on 3G/HSPA networks

Stock N4 does not have a H+ icon. It will be shown only on a custom ROM such as PA or CM as they have added it.
A sure shot way of knowing your current data connection is Settings > About phone > Status and check Mobile Network Type field.

[Q] witch carriers will be supported and carrier availability

I've been looking into buying a new phone and the oppo n1 is at the top of my list but one thing is that I have not a clue witch carriers will be supported and if eventually be able to get it from Verizon (although I highly doubt it Verizon is kind of stingy with anything to do with developing anything out of there control).
I'm pretty sure the N1 is a GSM phone, don't quote me on that though
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
You are correct. The Oppo N1 is a GSM phone.
Sprint and Verizon are out for carriers. We could see AT&T or T-Mo carrying the phone, but don't get your hopes up. Oppo as a whole is still pretty unknown in the US.
My N1 has been running on StraightTalk using an AT&T SIM since the middle of November. I haven't had any issues so far with it, and I get unlimited for $45/month.
Remember though that there is no 4G on this phone. It can use up to HSDPA and HSPA+.

HSPA+ is no slouch though... It's fast enough that AT&T and T-Mobile both called it "4G" for over a year.
If you go back to the original definition of 4G, not even North American LTE networks meet those original criteria.
In many places (such as the Binghamton, NY area), AT&T's backhaul (connection between the towers and the outside Internet) is so poor that you won't see any actual bandwidth difference between HSPA+ and LTE because the backhaul is the bottleneck - maybe a little bit of latency improvement but nothing major.
The difference between HSPA+ and LTE is nowhere near as major as the difference between CDMA2000 and LTE is.

At this point though, that is irrelevant. The phone is listed as 3G, so I'm just informing people that it is not "4G" as 4G/LTE is labeled by US carriers. Regardless of the speeds, network, backbone speeds, etc... The phone is 3G. I don't want to get people confused over the information about what HSPA+ is or isn't. There are a lot of people that only see 3G or 4G/LTE.

Why not?
You can cover the world with only 5 HSPA bands. You can still fail to support the whole world with 7-9 LTE bands.
LTE is too fragmented for a low-volume manufacturer.

AT&T vs. StraightTalk Wireless

Does anyone know which of these two has the most or strongest coverage areas with 4G / 4G LTE in the USA? I'm asking because I'm currently using AT&T and their services cover just about every area I have been to. The 4G is awesome. But StraightTalk gives you 5 GB of high-speed data for just $45.00 /mo. while AT&T only offers 2 GB. Is StraightTalk's services as good as or better than AT&T's?
Straight talk uses 3 different networks for byop. Sprint,at&t, and T-Mobile networks. If youre using an at&t modeled phone on straight talk youre still using at&t network. If you brought a tmobile phone to them it would use t mobiles network. And same thing for sprint phones. But why not go to cricket? Im using my unlocked d851 on cricket which is also at&ts network. But i get 10gb LTE for 60 a month. Im definitely happy with it. I havent gone over my high speed limit yet. Ive been with cricket for 5 months now

No i didnt know that. Well maybe ill switch to them next month. I had a sprint phone i used with them a couple years ago. Do they still have a processing fee on bill payments? Because cricket is 60 dollars even. Ill def go for 55/ month straight talk. I just hope they dont give me a sim that uses t mobile network. Att is so much better in chicago area than tmo

Thanks for the info. Ill be saving 60 dollars a year beginning next month. The reason i asked if youve activated, im wondering does straight talk use a att.net based apn or if they use an aiowireless.net apn like cricket does. No big deal either way i guess. I can testify the aio apn works just fine but i just imagine an apn with "att" in the address to be faster lol.. This is based on nothing

No. I have not begun my service yet. I just ordered a StraightTalk-AT&T Micro-SIM Card Kit off of eBay. It's coming form North Carolina. I live in South Carolina so I'm hoping to have it by Saturday. I'm switching when I get it. I've already used up my 2 GB of High-Speed Data from AT&T GoPhone. 2 GB is no where near enough data for me. I can't wait to switch!

Mi Max 3 in USA

Curious to see some comments from anyone with Mi Max 3 on T-Mobile or AT&T - are you able to get a stable LTE connection? Overlapping bands are only B4 and B5, so it may not work well everywhere in US. Some speed test results and general comments on LTE connection would be appreciated.
I am still awaiting my unit to show up, its been "in transit" for 2 weeks now. I have AT&T and am also curious about this.
I have used many overseas phones in the past and even without LTE I never really had any issues with speed. HSPA+ always seemed to get the job done fine.
LTE in USA
There's another thread on the board where a fellow in NJ is using the Mi Max 3 on T-Mobile and keeping Band 4 LTE almost all the time. I'm on T-Mobile as well and I'm seriously considering the device.
I am curious, though, if the Global version will have support for additional bands?
I got this phone last week and am on Tmobile. I'm getting 50mbps down with no drops yet. I love it. The only problem I had at first was with calling, but after enabling voLTE by typing *#*#86583#*#* into the dialer, problem solved.
I'm on Cricket and pulling stable LTE constantly, though I haven't left town with it yet. Probably Band 4, but 20 is also a possibility.
h20 wireless with uses ATT network shows 4g not LTE However Tmobile shows LTE

Which Global version do you speak of? If you're referring to Max 3 Global ROM, which some stores pre-install - that ROM has no impact on availability of additional LTE bands.
My black 6gb/128gb arrives today from TradingShenzhen to me in UK. I have an EE UK sim in slot 1 and AT&T US sim in slot 2. I won't be able to do the best tests since I'm obviously in UK currently, but at least you'll know whether you're covered internationally and how dual sim functionality is .
On T-Moblie
I am in TX using T-Mobile and the connectivity was horrible regardless. Even had T-Mobile store try to help.
Anyway, I followed the Xiaomi advice to revert to the China ROM (the "Global" Versions are BS and have this connectivity issue from some suppliers).
I need to flash the ROM tonight since I wiped EVERYTHING after fighting with it all night.
Apparently wiping "System" in a Xiaomi might be a very bad thing. I'll find out. I used TWRP BTW.
I’m referring to the authentic Global ROM that should be onboard the Hong Kong exports.

I believe so since changing to comes ROM stoned it for those that could. I'm out of town so I can't play with it to get it back functioning.

Super fast and really loving the build quality the phone is huge in person and I can't say enough about blue color.

ATT 5G nonsense

I was with a friend who has a new iPhone that was showing 5G. I have the dual SIM international version on ATT and I know it misses band 30 so I was interested to see just how much faster his network speed was. We both ran SPEED TEST and I got a miserable 15MB download and 10MB upload. Meantime.... He couldnt even get more than 2MB on both. He wasn't very happy! We tested web browsing and mine was faster. What a con!

It's not true 5G, it's 5GE it's just a fancier albeit deceptive way of saying 4G LTE+ (if I'm wrong on the LTE+ part my bad I know it's still 4G though) real 5G still has a little bit to go before it's full 5G

You're absolutely right. They're basically pulling the same Stunt they did when the started labeling HSPA+ as 4G when it was in fact more like 3.5G. Total sham. In order to be considered 5G you need to have a minimum speed of 1Gps. I get about 540Mps on LTE+ in Canada. I don't think AT&T can even come close to those speeds. And it's not even 5G.

My wife has an Att S10+ and I have a G975F variant.
the status bar shose 5G - but speeds are just typical - however, I have noticed that it is faster than my phone/ I was outside the other day and my wifes phone got 120MB download and 75 MB upload - I did a speed test on my phone at the same spot and I only got 60MB down and 30MB up.
I think it might be because the G975F varient is missing one band that is on the ATT Variant. It isn't reallt 5G but it is a bit faster on ATT phones. I think becuase it is Enhanced LTE....hopefully some day we will be able to flash ATT CSC on the G975F phones....I
don't remember which band is missing from the G975F variant, but it does definately mean that devices that are from the F Varients are not as fast on LTE as the ATT PHOnes.

don't remember which band is missing from the G975F variant, but it does definately mean that devices that are from the F Varients are not as fast on LTE as the ATT PHOnes.

Don't take this the wrong way but your home screen looks like my LG lucid that ran gingerbread. It gives me original Droid vibes as well I dig it.

Yeaaaaaa I was right. But in all seriousness it's shady as hell business practice (but then again almost all the carriers in the US were guilty of it at some point)

that is my wife's phone and home screen...it works for her.
AT&T should be held accountable by somebody for their scummy practices - or at least called out for it. It's ridiculous!
My phone got 7g's on att
Time to root and go custom. 6GYE$ for everyone!

Are you living under a rock? The other 3 major carriers called them out on it already, months ago. There's even an xda article from earlier today where Sprint and ATT settled a lawsuit about misleading customers about 5g "E".

No. I just haven't seen it. Have you seen everything, everywhere?
This 5G stuff is fluff anyways. I live in a rural area with barely any LTE coverage. Will most likely never see 5G here. I deploy IOT hardware (autonomous air quality/meterological arrays, for example) and they all use 2G GSM hardware. They just post data to an offshore server. Point is not all applications need low latency gigabit wireless. That's what my Xirrus wifi is for.
And where LTE service is good, I'm seeing nearly 200Mbps /50Mbps (down/up) speeds with latency averaging in the mid 20s to low 30s. That's good enough for me. Just remove the stupid wifi needed to get big updates and we're good. With unlimited plans these days it's ridiculous to have to tether off another LTE device to get larger updates.
Att recently updated to 4x4 bands and 5ge is their way of showing it instead of something like 4g+
